Jets keep Le’Veon Bell quiet, but Chiefs RB gets last laugh over former team

There was a lot of talk about Le’Veon Bell getting revenge on the Jets this week.

There was a lot of talk about Le’Veon Bell getting revenge on the Jets this week, but he wasn’t much of a factor in Kansas City’s 35-9 win over the running back’s former team.

Bell had 38 total yards in his first game against the team that cut him just a few weeks ago. He could not get anything going in the running game, as he had six carries for seven yards for an average of 1.2 yards per carry. In the passing game, Bell had three receptions for 31 yards, including an 18-yard catch.

Bell still doesn’t look like the player he once was with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Though he’s only spent two games in the Chiefs’ system, he doesn’t have that same explosiveness anymore. In four games this season, Bell has 95 total rushing yards on 31 rushing attempts. That’s an average of 3.0 yards per carry.

The Jets thought Bell still had some juice left in his legs when they signed him to a four-year deal worth $52.5 million. However, his tenure as a Jet didn’t go well from the start. Adam Gase reportedly didn’t want to pay Bell and then failed to make use of him in the offense. In 17 games with the Jets, Bell had 828 rushing yards, 500 receiving yards, and four total touchdowns.

The Jets released Bell after their Week 5 loss to the Cardinals. Bell liked some tweets about not being a factor in the passing game and about being traded, much to the dismay of Gase. He was released shortly after that and picked up by the Chiefs.

Bell got his chance to stick it to the Jets for releasing him, but he failed to prove them wrong on Sunday. He got the last laugh though, as his Chiefs picked up a win while the Jets moved to 0-8.

Jets injury report: Breshad Perriman, Jamison Crowder to miss game vs. Chiefs

The Jets will be without Breshad Perriman and Jamison Crowder on Sunday against the Chiefs.

Just when the Jets were starting to get healthy again, they lost their top two wide receivers.

Breshad Perriman is out for Sunday’s game against the Chiefs, as he’s still in concussion protocol after taking a massive hit from Micah Hyde last week against the Bills. Jamison Crowder (groin) is doubtful after failing to practice on Friday.

Blake Cashman (hamstring) is also out after not practicing on Friday. Bradley McDougald (shoulder) is out, as he didn’t practice at all this week.

Sam Ficken (groin) tried to give it a go in practice over the last two days, but he’s not ready to kick in a game. Sergio Castillo will be called up from the practice squad to take Ficken’s place for the second consecutive game.

Josh Andrews (shoulder), Frank Gore (hand), Jordan Jenkins (rib/shoulder) and Connor McDermott (illness) are all listed as questionable.

Meanwhile, the Jets also waived Daeshon Hall due to a failed physical, per the Houston Chronicle’s Aaron Wilson.

As for the Chiefs, Mitchell Schwartz (back) and Sammy Watkins (hamstring) have been ruled out.

Adam Gase thinks Le’Veon Bell is focused on winning vs. Jets, not revenge

Adam Gase believes Le’Veon Bell’s main focus is on winning against the Jets.

Adam Gase doesn’t think Le’Veon Bell will have revenge on his mind when Kansas City hosts the Jets on Sunday.

Bell will get to see his former team in only his second game as a Chief. He made his debut last week against Denver. While many believe that Bell will have a little extra motivation playing Gase and the Jets, the head coach thinks the running back will treat it like any other game.

“Yeah, I’m pretty sure that he’s going to be worried about just winning a game, period,” Gase said, per ESPN’s Rich Cimini. “That’s what most players are worried about. They’re worried about, ‘Hey, what do I have to do this week to help my team win?’ So, I’m sure that’s what he’s going to be worried about doing. We’ve got a lot of guys to worry about on that side of the ball against them.”

Obviously, Bell’s main focus is on winning the game, but it wouldn’t be a shock to most if he wants to stick it to the Jets for releasing him. Bell’s tenure with the Jets didn’t go according to plan and he was rarely happy with the way in which Gase used him.

In 17 games with the Jets, Bell had 863 rushing yards, 500 receiving yards and four total touchdowns. It was well under Bell’s usual numbers that he put up with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Out of the five seasons Bell was in Pittsburgh, he had three 1,000+-yard seasons.

It was reported that Gase never wanted Bell in the first place. Mike Maccagnan signed Bell in 2019 to a four-year deal worth $52.5 million. Maccagnan was fired soon after, and Gase then failed to use Bell properly in his offense. A few weeks backs, Bell liked some tweets about not being a big enough factor in the passing game and about being traded. He was released a few days later.

Now Bell will get his shot on Sunday to make the Jets look silly for releasing him — and pick up a win, something his old team has yet to do.

Jets TE Chris Herndon feels he’s been used ‘fairly’ despite plummeting production

Chris Herndon thinks he’s been fairly used on offense this season.

Chris Herndon has not produced the way he was expected to in 2020, but he doesn’t think that has to do with how he’s being used within the Jets offense.

Herndon thinks he’s been used “fairly” on offense this season, per ESPN’s Rich Cimini. The third-year tight end only has 13 catches for 98 yards on the year. He’s also had some costly drops and fumbles, but Herndon knows he can’t control how involved he is on the offense.

“It’s a team game,” Herndon said. “I can’t sit after every game and be upset and mad and try to point fingers. This time last year I wasn’t even on the field, so at this point, I’m honestly just thankful to be out there.”

Obviously, Herndon would prefer to be having a better season than he is now. He showed a ton of potential in his rookie season with 39 catches for 502 yards and four touchdowns. Then a suspension, a hamstring injury and a rib injury threw his sophomore season off course. He played in just one game.

There was a lot of hype about Herndon in training camp this summer. Adam Gase said he was going to play a big role in the offense. But the Jets have failed to get him the ball and when he does get it, he doesn’t hang onto it.

Fortunately for the tight end, there are nine games left to be played, so Herndon still has a shot to make something of this season. If he can play well over this final stretch and carry that into next season, he’ll have a worthwhile end to the season to build on in 2021.

Updated 2020 NFL Draft Order: Who trails the Jets?

The Jets still own the No. 1 overall pick in next year’s draft after their Week 7 loss.

Jets injury report: Kyle Phillips out for the year, Breshad Perriman evaluated for concussion

The Jets lost one of their defensive ends in Sunday’s 18-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills.

The Jets lost one of their defensive ends in Sunday’s 18-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills.

Adam Gase said after the game that Kyle Phillips is out for the year with an ankle injury. Phillips went down once in the game with an injury but was able to come back, only to re-injure himself again. A cart had to be brought out for Phillips the second time.

Breshad Perriman is being evaluated for a concussion after he took a vicious hit from Micah Hyde while attempting to make a catch late in the fourth quarter. Perriman was down on the ground for a while but was able to get up and walk off to the Jets’ locker room.

Jamison Crowder (groin) didn’t play on Sunday because he was unable to practice on Friday. The Jets will have to monitor that this week.

Sam Darnold brushes Trevor Lawrence speculation aside: ‘It’s out of my control’

The Jets’ current quarterback isn’t concerning himself with thoughts of Clemson’s gunslinger.

The Trevor Lawrence sweepstakes are heating up as the Jets’ record continues to trend in the wrong direction. The speculation over the Clemson quarterback’s future in New York has now become loud enough for Sam Darnold to hear.

With the Jets at 0-6, they control their own destiny to land the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Many believe the Jets would take Lawrence and move on from Darnold if they had the top pick in the draft come April. While Darnold has heard the outside noise, he’s keeping his focus on Sunday’s game against the Bills.

“Yeah, you know, I mean, I have social media,” Darnold said of the Lawrence talk, per ESPN’s Rich Cimini. “I’ve seen some of the things, but … Yeah, we’ve got a game to win this week and that’s all we’re worried about.”

There’s not much else Darnold can really do right now. If the Jets decide to go in a different direction this offseason, there should be other teams interested in his potential. The remainder of the 2020 season could serve as an evaluation period for him when it comes to attracting other teams.

“For me, it’s out of my control,” Darnold said. “I’m here to do my best and help this team win games.”

Darnold has been put in one of the worst situations in the NFL. The supporting cast around him has been lackluster through his three NFL seasons and not many quarterbacks can do well with the Jets have given Darnold. The coaching around him hasn’t been great, either.

In Darnold’s rookie year, he had a defensive-minded head coach in Todd Bowles. The Jets then brought in Adam Gase specifically to develop Darnold, but that has completely backfired. If anything, Darnold has regressed under Gase since he’s arrived. In four games this year, Darnold’s yards per game (198), quarterback rating (70.7) and completion percentage (59.4 percent) are all down from last year.

Despite the numbers, offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains isn’t concerned with Darnold’s performance.

“Sam is the least of our worries,” he said, per Newsday’s Al Lannazzone.

However, if Darnold doesn’t start showing improvement and the Jets continue to lose games, Lawrence could be the one under center come next season.

The New York Jets will face the Buffalo Bills for the final time this season when the two teams meet at MetLife Stadium on Sunday.

Buffalo won the first match at home, 27-17. However, the final score doesn’t indicate how this game really went. The Jets were never in the Week 1 contest, as they fell behind 21-0 and never got within one possession.

New York will get its starting quarterback back after Sam Darnold missed the last two games with a shoulder injury. Mekhi Becton will also make his return after dealing with his own shoulder injury.

Jamison Crowder has been downgraded to doubtful with a groin injury. The Jets will also be without Sam Ficken, as he injured his groin and is listed as doubtful. Sergio Castillo will kick for the Jets on Sunday in his NFL debut. Alex Lewis is also doubtful with a shoulder injury.

Chuma Edoga (calf) and George Fant (knee) are both questionable.

Here’s everything you need to know to watch Sunday’s game as well as information for the rest of the Jets’ 2020 season.

Jets activate Denzel Mims, Cameron Clark off injured reserve, Jamison Crowder downgraded to doubtful

The Jets have activated Denzel Mims and Cameron Clark off of the injured reserve list.

It’s official — Denzel Mims will finally make his NFL debut against the Bills in Week 7.

The Jets announced on Saturday that they have activated Mims and Cameron Clark off of the injured reserve list. New York also promoted Sergio Castillo and Bryce Hager from the practice squad to the active roster.

Mims has New York’s first six games with multiple hamstring injuries. The first one came at the beginning of training camp that caused him to miss the majority of camp. He then injured his other hamstring, forcing him out of action yet again. Clark has also dealt with an assortment of injuries. He injured his shoulder in camp and then hurt his knee. Clark’s been on injured reserve since the beginning of September.

As for Castillo, he’ll kick for the injured Sam Ficken (groin). Castillo has never kicked in an NFL game before, but has kicked in the CFL and AAF. Hager has been on the Jets’ practice squad since September 22nd.

While Mims return is a positive for the Jets, Jamison Crowder has been downgraded to doubtful with a groin injury. Meanwhile, Harvey Langi was fined $4,412 for unnecessary roughness in last week’s game against the Dolphins, according to the NY Post’s Brian Costello.

Sam Darnold, Mekhi Becton expected to play vs. Bills

Sam Darnold will be back under center on Sunday against the Buffalo Bills.

Sam Darnold will likely be back under center on Sunday against the Buffalo Bills.

Adam Gase said on Friday that Darnold will be the Jets’ starting quarterback this week barring a setback in practice on Friday. Darnold has been limited in practice this week and still has some pain in his shoulder, but it’s manageable enough for him to play.

Darnold was injured in Week 4 against the Denver Broncos when he was slammed into the ground on a sack. He left the game to get checked on by trainers but was able to return and finish the game. However, after further testing, it was revealed that Darnold had sprained his AC joint in his right shoulder. He has missed the Jets’ last two games and Joe Flacco has started in his place.

Darnold has struggled so far this season, as he’s thrown for 792 yards to go along with three touchdowns and four interceptions. Fortunately for Darnold, he could have his full cast of weapons for the first time this season.

Mekhi Becton will also make his return unless he has a setback in practice following a two-game absence with a shoulder injury.
