2020 Bears schedule: Second quarter breakdown

Let’s take a look at the Bears’ second-quarter games of the 2020 season, including way-too-early game predictions.

The Chicago Bears unveiled their 2020 schedule last week, where we learned exactly when they’ll face their 2020 opponents. While the beginning of the season looks favorable, Chicago faces a difficult stretch in the final nine games.

When looking at the second quarter of the Bears’ 2020 schedule, it’s the beginning of a difficult stretch for Chicago, where they’ll face three NFC South teams in the next four games.

The Bears will play two prime-time games in those next four games, including a home matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday Night Football and road game against the Los Angeles Rams on Monday Night Football. Chicago will also host the New Orleans Saints for the second straight year, which should be a big test for the Bears at the midway point of the season.

Let’s take a look at the Bears’ next four games of the 2020 season, including way-too-early game predictions.

Week 5 | Bears vs. Buccaneers

Joe Robbins/Getty Images

The Bears will open their second quarter under the lights in a home game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday Night Football. The last time these two teams met, the Bears routed the Bucs 48-10 behind Mitchell Trubisky’s six-touchdown performance. But these aren’t those same Bucs from two seasons ago. Chicago will face quarterback Tom Brady and the Bruce Arians-led Bucs, which many have pegged for a strong season. This will be an early test for the Bears, but it’s also a game that they certainly have a chance of winning.

Prediction: Buccaneers 17-13

2020 Bears Schedule Breakdown: Indianapolis Colts

The Bears will host the Colts in Week 4 of the 2020 NFL season. Let’s review the Colts offseason.

Nearly four years will have passed by the time the Chicago Bears and Indianapolis Colts meet in Week 4 of the 2020 NFL season. The two, of course, met in Super Bowl XLI, with three other meetings since then. The rosters look drastically different as historical figures like Peyton Manning and Marvin Harrison on the Colts side have both retired.

The Bears, too, have seen a new generation of defensive talent come through after Brian Urlacher, Lance Briggs, and Charles Tillman all have moved on.

The Colts were rocked at the beginning of the 2019 season when Andrew Luck suddenly retired, leaving them scrambling at the quarterback position. Jacoby Brissett led them to a 7-9 record, and with the addition of Philip Rivers in the offseason, the Colts are primed to make another run at the postseason.

Key Additions:

QB Philip Rivers, DT DeForest Buckner, TE Trey Burton, DT Sheldon Day, CB Xavier Rhodes

Key Losses:

TE Eric Ebron, OL Josh Andrews, WR Devin Funchess

2019 Offensive Rankings:

Total Offense (25), Rushing Offense (7), Passing Offense (30)

2019 Defensive Rankings:

Total Defense (16), Rushing Defense (7), Passing Defense (23)

Season Series:

Colts 24-19

What have you done for me lately?

The Colts have taken three out of the last five contests, but they haven’t won at Soldier Field since 2004. Before that, the Colts’ last victory at Soldier Field came in 1975 when they were still located in Baltimore, and Bert Jones was under center.

Key Stats:

Despite leaving Chicago with a victory last year – although thanks should be in order for Eddy Pineiro – Philip Rivers has a career 84.5 quarterback rating against the Bears, the second-lowest of any team with at least a four-game sample size.

It will also mark the first time that Chuck Pagano game-plans against his former employer.

Ranking Bears’ best prime-time games in 2020

The Bears begin their prime-time slate in Week 5, where they’ll play 4 prime-time games in 8 weeks.

The Chicago Bears will be looking to rebound following a disappointing 2019 season that featured significant regression just one year removed from a 12-4 season.

It’s safe to say not many are confident in the Bears heading into 2020, but surprisingly the NFL believes the Bears are still must-see television, as they’ve handed them four prime-time games this year.

Unlike last season when the Bears didn’t play a noon game until Week 8 against the Los Angeles Chargers — they had two prime time games, two games at 3:25 p.m. CT and an international game in London — Chicago will start the 2020 season with four straight noon games.

The Bears begin their prime-time slate in Week 5, where they’ll play four prime-time games in eight weeks. Those matchups include home games against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Minnesota Vikings, as well as road games against the Los Angeles Rams and Green Bay Packers.

Let’s rank the Bears’ best prime-time games of 2020.

2020 Bears schedule: First quarter breakdown

Let’s take a look at the Bears’ first four games of the 2020 season, including way-too-early game predictions.

The Chicago Bears unveiled their 2020 schedule last week, where we learned exactly when they’ll face their 2020 opponents. While the beginning of the season looks favorable, Chicago faces a difficult stretch in the final nine games.

When looking at the first quarter of the Bears’ 2020 schedule, it’s reasonable to assume they could start the season 4-0 with home games against the New York Giants and Indianapolis Colts, as well as away games against the Detroit Lions and Atlanta Falcons.

Let’s take a look at the Bears’ first four games of the 2020 season, including way-too-early game predictions.

Week 1 | Bears at Lions

Raj Mehta-USA TODAY Sports

The Bears haven’t won in Week 1 since 2013, but they have a good chance of reversing their fortunes against the Lions in 2020. Since Matt Nagy arrived in 2018, the Bears have gone 4-0 against their NFC North rivals, including back-to-back Thanksgiving victories.

Chicago will open the season at Detroit, where the Lions have proven to put up more of a fight. In the last two years, the Bears and Lions entered the fourth quarter tied, which should make for an exciting finish like Eddie Jackson’s pick six or Mitchell Trubisky to David Montgomery’s game-winning touchdown.

Prediction: Bears 24-17

2020 Bears Schedule Breakdown: Atlanta Falcons

The Bears will travel to Atlanta in Week 3 of the 2020 NFL season. Can they steal a victory in a hostile environment?

Looking ahead to Week 3 of the 2020 NFL season, the Chicago Bears will travel south to face the Atlanta Falcons. The two have not met since the season opener in 2017. If you recall, Mike Glennon made his first start in a Bears uniform when the two teams met at Soldier Field.

The Bears came up just short in the contest thanks, in large part, to a Jordan Howard dropped pass at the one-yard line with 12 seconds left in the game. Granted, there’s no guarantee he would have found the endzone, but the Bears did have a timeout and at least one more play in their back pocket.

Let’s dive into their matchup this year.

Key Additions:

RB Todd Gurley, TE Hayden Hurst, OLB Dante Fowler, DT, Tyeler Davison, S Sharrod Neasman, WR Laquon Treadwell

Key Losses:

TE Austin Hooper, DE Vic Beasley, CB Desmond Trufant, DE Adrian Clayborn

2019 Offensive Rankings:

2019 Defensive Rankings:

What have you done for me lately?

The Bears have lost three out of the last five matchups, including a 23-17 loss at home in 2017. However, they won their previous matchup in Atlanta in 2014.

Key Stats:

Over a three-game sample size, Julio Jones has been held in check against the Chicago Bears, limiting him to just 68.3 yards-per-game and zero touchdowns. The Bears have also done well, limiting Matt Ryan’s production. In five games, Ryan has an average quarterback rating of 87.7, third-worst of any team he’s faced.

Bears 2020 schedule: Staff picks and predictions

Here’s how the Bears Wire staff sees Bears’ 2020 season shaking out.

There are roughly four months — hopefully- until the start of the 2020 NFL season. With the release of the Chicago Bears’ 2020 schedule, it’s natural to do a deep-dive into the opponents and ultimately how the schedule shakes out.

Following a disappointing 2019 season, confidence isn’t exactly high surrounding the Bears heading into 2020. But aside from challenges against teams like the Green Bay Packers, New Orleans Saints and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Chicago’s schedule is pretty favorable.

Still, that’s no guarantee for a team that had one of the worst offenses a season ago and has plenty to prove if they hope to be in the playoff conversation come December.

Here’s how the Bears Wire staff sees Bears’ 2020 season shaking out.

Alyssa Barbieri (@alyssabarbieri) | 10-6 record

After everything went right for the Bears in 2018, everything went about as bad as it could the following season in 2019, which ended with a 8-8 record. Chicago had one of the worst offenses in the NFL, but they also had one of the best defenses.

Obviously, the success of this 2020 Bears team hinges on the success of the quarterback — whichever guy winds up lining up under center, Mitchell Trubisky or Nick Foles. But when looking at this Bears team from a season ago, you can’t say they didn’t upgrade at several positions. Sure, they lost some key depth pieces on defense and a veteran receiver in Taylor Gabriel. But Chicago upgraded at quarterback and tight end, as well as pass rusher, safety and you could argue cornerback with rookie Jaylon Johnson.

While it’s difficult to judge opponents early in the offseason, the Bears’ schedule appears favorable. If they can stay relatively healthy, get adequate play from their offense and let their dominant defense lead the way, there’s no doubt they’ll be competing for a playoff spot — and possibly an NFC North title — late in the season.

Brendan Sugrue (@BrendanSugrue) | 10-6 record

Are the Bears closer to their 12-4 record in 2018, or their 8-8 record in 2019? I believe they’re right in the middle at 10-6. Their defense could be even better than their 2018 campaign with the additions of OLB Robert Quinn and S Tashuan Gipson. If rookie CB Jaylon Johnson is the real deal, their secondary will see a significant boost in production.

The unit’s overall athleticism will benefit them against aging immobile quarterbacks like Tom Brady, Drew Brees, and Philip Rivers. Even with a mediocre offense led by Mitchell Trubisky or Nick Foles, they can still grind their way to tough victories. This team will be in contention for a playoff spot right up until the end of the season.

Ryan Sikes (@ryan_sikes10) | 8-8 record

At worst, I have the Bears going 8-8. Assuming Trubisky can rebound and look more like the 2018 version, they may be able to reach 10 wins. The defense, on paper, is arguably better than it was in 2018 and will figure to be the backbone again in 2020.

I like what the Bears have done to upgrade the tight end position with Cole Kmet potentially being the steal of the draft. Ted Ginn Jr. was a solid, veteran signing and should be a threat as a number three option for the Bears offense. Look for the offensive line to bounce back as well after a down year.

2020 Bears Schedule Breakdown: New York Giants

The Bears will play host to the Giants in Week 2 of the season. How might they stack up?

In Week 2 of the 2020 NFL season, the Chicago Bears will welcome in the New York Giants in what will officially be their home opener. The two teams met twice last year – once in the preseason and again in Week 12 – with the Bears leaving Soldier Field with a 19-14 victory.

It marked Giants quarterback Daniel Jones’ second career start, and he is now in the driver’s seat for QB1 duties after Eli Manning’s retirement. In the contest last year, Mitchell Trubisky passed for 278 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions.

Khalil Mack played a vital role with a strip-sack late in the third quarter that set up a two-yard Trubisky keeper for the score. The Giants don’t figure to be much better than last year, so the Bears have a prime opportunity to start the home schedule off on the right foot.

Key Additions:

CB James Bradberry, LB Blake Martinez, TE Levine Toilolo, EDGE Kyler Fackrell

Key Losses:

S Antoine Bethea, LB Alec Ogletree, LB Kareem Martin, QB Eli Manning, TE Rhett Ellison

2020 NFL Draft:

OT Andrew Thomas (1), S Xavier McKinney (2), OT Matt Peart (3), CB Darnay Holmes (4), IOL Shane Lemieux (5), LB Cam Brown (6), LB Carter Coughlin (7), LB T.J. Brunson (7), DB Chris Williamson (7), LB Tae Crowder (7)

2019 Offensive Rankings:

Total Offense (23), Rushing Offense (19), Passing Offense (18)

2019 Defensive Rankings:

Total Defense (25), Rushing Defense (20), Passing Defense (28)

Season Series:

Bears 34-24-2

What have you done for me lately?

The Giants have taken the last four-of-six in this series, but they haven’t won at Soldier Field since their Super Bowl season in 2007.

Key Stats:

Allen Robinson has averaged 105.0 yards-per-game against the Giants, the second-most in his career with at least a two-game sample size. The Bears also held Giants’ running back Saquon Barkley in check last year with just 59 rushing yards, of which 22 came on one play. They will need to do the same again in 2020.

2020 Chicago Bears preseason schedule

The Bears announced their preseason slate, which includes games against the Browns, 49ers, Broncos and Titans.

The Chicago Bears’ 2020 regular-season schedule has been released, where we learned exactly how their season will shake out.

The Bears also announced their preseason slate, which includes home games against the Cleveland Browns and San Francisco 49ers, as well as away games against the Denver Broncos and Tennessee Titans.

  • Aug. 13-17 vs. Cleveland Browns, Time TBD
  • Aug. 20-24 at Denver Broncos, Time TBD
  • Aug. 27-30 vs. San Francisco 49ers, Time TBD
  • Sept. 3 at Tennessee Titans, Time TBD

Interestingly enough, the Bears will play the Titans twice this year — once in the preseason and again in Week 9. Both of those games will be road games at Tennessee.

In Matt Nagy’s two-year coaching tenure in Chicago, preseason typically has been reserved for young guys competing for roster spots. Nagy has received criticism for resting his starters, including during the dress rehearsal games, where teams are known to play into the third quarter.

But this season will be different. That, following a disappointing 2019 campaign, which included one of the NFL’s worst offenses. Leading the preseason charge will be the Mitchell Trubisky vs. Nick Foles quarterback competition, which Nagy stressed will play into the preseason.
