Looking back on the 2017 recruiting class and it’s impact on the 2021 Oklahoma Sooner Sooners

A deeper look at the remaining members of Oklahoma’s 2017 recruiting class and their contributions to the 2021 Oklahoma Sooners.

The bye week is the perfect time for reminiscing and reflecting as the current Oklahoma Sooners enjoy their time off relaxing, resting, and recovering from a grueling stretch where they played football for nine straight weeks.

These 2021 Sooners are led in part by many seniors who are looking to cement their legacy in Sooner history. Specifically, we’ll look at the Sooners of the 2017 class. Some have come and gone but upon further review, it’s hard not to marvel at the work of the Sooners coaching staff (past and present) for being instrumental in landing and developing such talent.

As it stands, eight of the 28 members of that class are already in the NFL. CeeDee Lamb, Tre Brown, Kenneth Murray, Creed Humphrey, Adrian Ealy, Marquise Brown, Tre Norwood, and Trey Sermon (yes, he transferred to Ohio State but he spent 3 years in Norman).

Current members of that class like Justin Broiles, Jeremiah Hall, Marquis Hayes, Isaiah Thomas, Tyrese Robinson, and Kennedy Brooks are on the precipice of the NFL themselves.

Let’s take a look at these seniors and their contributions to the program and their role going forward for the remainder of the season.

Where Texas’ 2017 recruiting class is now

Four years ago, Tom Herman was hired to be Texas’ coach. The transition recruiting class was not great. Here is where the ’17 class is now.

Four years ago, Tom Herman was hired away from Houston to become the head coach of Texas. His transition recruiting class was not ideal, dealing with the struggles of Charlie Strong.

On the 247Sports composite, Texas had the No. 25 class in the country and the No. 2 class in the Big 12. It was the lowest-rated class since Strong’s transition class from Mack Brown. Few significant starters were able to be developed and turned into talent ready for the next level.

So far, only four players have made it to the NFL, while five are expected to be on the roster for Steve Sarkisian. COVID-19 allowed players to take a fifth year if they chose to. Of the five, only two are going to be starters week in and week out for the Longhorns.

Georgia had seven players drafted this past weekend in the 2020 NFL Draft. Let’s look back at the former Bulldogs from their time as recruits. 

Andrew Thomas OT – pick No. 4, New York Giants. 

Thomas was a 5-star OT for Pace Academy in Atlanta, Georgia. 247Sports had Thomas as the No. 9 OT and No. 45 overall recruit in the 2017 recruiting class. 

Isaiah Wilson OT – pick No. 29, Tennessee Titans 

Wilson was a 5-star OT for Poly Prep Country Day High School in Brooklyn, New York. 247Sports had Wilson ranked as the NO. 5 OT and No. 16 overall recruit in the 2017 recruiting class. 

D’Andre Swift RB – pick No. 35, Detroit Lions 

Swift was a 5-star RB from St. Joseph’s High School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. 247Sports had Swift ranked as the No. 4 RB and No. 33 overall recruit in the 2017 recruiting class. 

Solomon Kindley OG – pick No. 111, Miami Dolphins 

Kindley was a 3-star OT for Raines High School in Jacksonville, Florida. 247Sports had Kindley ranked as the No. 89 OT and No. 1,051 recruit in the 2016 recruiting class. 

Jake Fromm QB – pick No. 167, Buffalo Bills

Fromm was a 4-star QB for Houston County High School in Warner Robins, Georgia. 247Sports had Fromm ranked as the No. 3 pro-style QB and the No. 44 overall recruit in the 2017 recruiting class. Fromm was originally committed to Alabama before following Kirby Smart to Georgia.  

Charlie Woerner TE – pick No. 190, San Francisco 49ers

Woerner was a 4-star TE for Rabun County in Tiger, Georgia. 247Sports had Woerner ranked as the No. 25 WR and the No. 138 overall recruit in the 2016 recruiting class. Tae Crowder LB – pick No. 255, New York Giants

Crowder was a 3-star RB for Harris County High School in Hamilton, Georgia. 247Sports had Crowder ranked as the No, 1,868 overall player and the No. 175 ranked recruit in Georgia for the class of 2015. Crowder moved to linebacker after the 2016 season and blossomed into a starter in 2018 and 2019.
