Sojourn Shelton added to Arizona Cardinals practice squad

The Arizona Cardinals signed former Wisconsin Badgers cornerback Sojourn Shelton to their practice squad ahead of their Week 11 matchup.

The Arizona Cardinals have brought back former Wisconsin Badgers defensive back Sojourn Shelton, signing him to their practice squad.

Shelton was originally signed by Arizona after going undrafted in 2017, but was released before the season started. He ended up spending his entire first season on the Bengals practice squad.

He caught on with the Eagles in August but was cut at the end of the preseason, and the 24-year-old has remained a free agent until now.

Shelton will provide the Cardinals with added depth at the cornerback positions, and could sneak onto the team as a special teams contributor as well.

Shelton had a very solid career at Wisconsin, playing with the Badgers from 2013-2016 and racking up 129 total tackles, nine interceptions and 30 passes defended, which ranks sixth in the BIG-10 since 2005.

However, his lack of size (five-foot-nine, 168 pounds) has limited him to precious few opportunities in the NFL. He’ll have to really fight to earn his way onto Arizona’s roster before the season is up.

Bears WR Allen Robinson ready to face former teammate CB Jalen Ramsey in Week 11

Bears WR Allen Robinson has a tall task in front of him in Week 11: Facing former Jaguars teammate CB Jalen Ramsey.

When the Chicago Bears head to Los Angeles to face the Rams, receiver Allen Robinson will find himself locked in a battle with former Jacksonville Jaguars teammate cornerback Jalen Ramsey.

It’s safe to assume that Ramsey will cover Robinson exclusively, looking to take away quarterback Mitchell Trubisky’s top target. A challenge that Robinson welcomes.

‘‘It’s gonna be physical, it’s gonna be competitive, it’s gonna be fun,’’ Robinson said, via the Sun-Times. ‘‘I’m definitely looking forward to it. . . . I talk, he talks, so it’ll be fun.’’

In a season where the Bears offense has struggled immensely, Robinson has been the gear that has made the offense go. Robinson’s production this season — with 53 catches for 618 yards and three touchdowns — is already nearing his production from 2018. And there’s still seven games remaining.

Given Robinson’s success, it’s no wonder why nearly 27% of Chicago’s passes go Robinson’s way. In fact, no other wide receivers have neared 300 yards receiving or half his receptions.

Trubisky and the Bears’ offense will need to be aware of Ramsey’s presence, as he’s always a threat to make a play. While Robinson typically is Trubisky’s security blanket, it’s going to be much more difficult to get him the ball.

‘‘We expect him to match A-Rob,’’ Trubisky said of Ramsey. ‘‘Obviously, he’s in a new scheme, so I think he’s still getting used to that. But most of the time he’s matching, and he’s just gonna cover his guy and try and shut that down.’’

Robinson knows Ramsey well, and he expects nothing short of a physical battle.

‘‘At some of the catch points, he tries to be a little more physical,’’ Robinson said. ‘‘If you catch the ball on the sideline, you know he’s gonna be physical. There’s a lot you can expect in this game.’’

49ers sign former Giants DE Damontre Moore

The San Francisco 49ers have signed former New York Giants third-round pick Damontre Moore.

The San Francisco 49ers have re-signed former New York Giants defensive end Damontre Moore. The Giants originally selected Moore in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft.

Moore was last seen playing for San Diego Fleet in the Alliance of American Football in an effort to revive his career. The league of course ceased operations without making it through a full season.

Moore obviously caught the eye of the 49ers, who just signed him for the third time since April. After being signed on April 5, Moore was waived on May 16. He was signed again on July 24 before being waived again on August 24. The injury to Ronald Blair opened up the spot for the 49ers to sign Moore again on Tuesday.

Moore, of course, started his career with the Giants in 2013 and played for them for nearly three seasons before being cut on December 15 due to violating team rules after an apparent altercation with fellow defensive lineman Cullen Jenkins.

Since then, Moore had brief stints with the Miami Dolphins, Oakland Raiders, Seattle Seahawks and Dallas Cowboys prior to playing in the AAF.

On top of the conduct issues with the Giants, Moore has also faced suspension due to violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy during his time with Dallas. The 49ers have had Moore on and off their roster twice in the calendar year, so they are likely familiar with the 27-year-old defensive end.

Watch: Younghoe Koo talks about debut, wearing Vick’s jersey number

Week 10 was a bit of an adjustment for Falcons fans. Not only did the team play uncharacteristically well, there was another player wearing former QB Michael Vick’s infamous No. 7 jersey.

Week 10 was a bit of an adjustment for Falcons fans. Not only did the team play uncharacteristically well, there was another player wearing former QB Michael Vick’s infamous No. 7 jersey.

That player was kicker Younghoe Koo, whose 6-for-6 debut against the Saints earned him NFC Special Teams Player of the Week.

Koo was asked about winning the award, and just how bizarre it is to be wearing Vick’s former number. Watch what he had to say below, as tweeted by ESPN’s Vaughn McClure:

Washington will look to get Terry McLaurin more active in the offense

The Redskins desperately need to find something that works on offense, and they think that moving McLaurin around on offense might help.

It sounds like you can expect to see much more of rookie wide receiver Terry McLaurin this weekend against the New York Jets.

You can probably expect to see more of all Redskins receivers for that matter.

When talking to the media on Thursday afternoon, Washington coach Bill Callahan talked about how the team went about trying to solve their offensive woes during the bye week, and one of the top solutions they came up with was getting the receivers more open in space downfield, allowing rookie QB Dwayne Haskins more options to pass to. Obviously, that includes McLaurin, but Callahan also made sure to note that he wants to see more production from Steven Sims Jr., Cam Sims, and Darvin Kidsy as well.

While the Jets defense is one of the best in the league against the run, their secondary is nothing to gloss over either. The Redskins offense will have their work cut out for them on Sunday, but maybe this new wrinkle can help them end the touchdown-less streak at long last.

5 burning questions heading into UFC on ESPN+ 22

MMA Junkie’s Dave Doyle previews UFC on ESPN+ 22 with the top storylines heading into the Brazil card.

[jwplayer r8zJp65o-FLu19iir]

A stretch of weekly UFC events dating back to Aug. 31 winds to its conclusion Saturday, as the company heads back to one of its most reliable international markets, Brazil, for UFC on ESPN+ 22, before things shut down for a couple of weeks.

As is usually the case when the promotion goes to one of the sport’s true hotbeds, there’s an interesting array of matchups featuring several big names in consequential fights.

This includes the main event, an important light heavyweight showdown with potential championship-picture implications between [autotag]Jan Blachowicz [/autotag]and [autotag]Ronaldo Souza[/autotag].

UFC on ESPN+ 22 takes place Saturday at Ginasio do Ibirapuera in Sao Paulo. The card streams on ESPN+.

Without further ado, here are five burning questions heading into UFC on ESPN+ 22.

****

How will the move up to light heavyweight go for ‘Jacare’ Souza?

After dropping two of his past three fights and three of his past five, former Strikeforce middleweight champion Souza (26-7 MMA, 9-4 UFC) makes the move up to 205 pounds for his main event bout with Jan Blachowicz (24-8 MMA, 7-5 UFC).

It’s hard not to draw a comparison to the other former champs who have recently attempted to refresh their careers with moves up in weight.

And, well, it hasn’t exactly gone so well.

Luke Rockhold made the jump earlier this year at UFC 239, where he get mauled in short order by Blachowicz. Chris Weidman tried it out last month, and he didn’t last two minutes before he was finished by Dominick Reyes.

Add in that “Jacare” is a month shy of his 40th birthday, and, well, it doesn’t look good on paper. Until you look a little deeper, that is.

Rockhold, who spent years sparring hard in the gym with bigger fighters in Cain Velasquez and Daniel Cormier at American Kickboxing Academy, was knocked out badly by Michael Bisping and Yoel Romero at middleweight before moving up. Weidman, for his part, was on an even worse string of results, including getting stopped by Souza and Rockhold.

“Jacare,” on the other hand, lost a debatable split decision to Kelvin Gastelum and accepted a dangerous short-notice foe in Jack Hermansson last time out, where he still went the distance before losing.

Blachowicz is no less dangerous for Souza than he was Rockhold, but the simple fact of the matter is this move doesn’t seem to present the same red flags as his fellow standouts who have made the jump.

Virginia Tech (6-3) vs. Georgia Tech (2-7) Game Preview

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

The Hokies are finding ways to win.

They’re not consistent enough defensively, but they’re getting the job done offensively and the D has clamped down in three of the last four games.

Now everything is on the table. Win the last three games against Georgia Tech, Pitt and at Virginia, and it’s off to the ACC Championship.

There’s no reason to work too hard on this – start running, and keep running.

The Hokies have hit the 220-yard mark in three of the last four games with a good rotation of backs to go along with whoever is under center.

The Georgia Tech run defense has been a wee bit better after getting hammered early, but it’s still allowing over four yards per carry and 150 yards or more in every game but the early win over USF.

Back in the mix after missing the Notre Dame game, freshman QB Hendon Hooker is the playmaker who’s making it all go. He’s not making mistakes, and he’s running well enough to tear off yards in chunks against this defensive front.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Georgia Tech Will Win

The record isn’t great, but the Yellow Jackets really are playing a whole lot better. They beat Miami, and they pushed Pitt and Virginia over the last few weeks.

Finally, the passing game is starting to kick it in. James Graham is coming off a 229-yard, two-score day in the loss to Virginia. Now he gets to go against a leaky Hokie secondary that’s picking off a lot of passes, but is allowing over 300 yards a game with 14 touchdowns in the last five games.

He doesn’t have to go off, but as long as he’s merely okay, and if the offense can catch a few breaks on takeaways, the Yellow Jackets should be in the game.

There haven’t been a whole lot of big plays coming from the defense, but Virginia Tech has fumbling problems and is next-to-last in the ACC in giveaways.

[lawrence-related id=499899]

What’s Going To Happen

Will Virginia Tech be on letdown alert with the big games coming up with Coastal title implications? Georgia Tech – at home – is doing just enough to hang around, but the offense isn’t good enough to put together a full four quarters to pull this off.

Just when it seems like the game is about to slip away for the Hokies, they’ll get two second half scoring drives to survive and advance. The Yellow Jackets won’t have an answer.
