West Virginia vs Virginia Tech Game Preview

Why West Virginia Will Win

West Virginia deserves a better record than 1-2.

JT Daniels is playing well, the offense is moving, the offensive line is great, the attack is 11th in the nation in scoring and 13th in total yards per game, and really, the defense is far better than it looked against Kansas two weeks ago.

The stats might not be there, but the Mountaineers have the defensive front to hold up against a relatively punchless Virginia Tech offense. However, the D hasn’t done much to take the ball away so far. That has to change.

Virginia Tech gave it up five times in the opener against Old Dominion, and hasn’t given it up since. Be +2 in turnover margin, pull off the upset.

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

The Hokies stopped with the mistakes, and everything changed.

Along with stopping the turnovers, they’ve been flagged just ten times after getting hit with 15 penalties against ODU.

The running game isn’t coming up with big bursts, but it’s getting enough production to get by. The run defense has been a brick wall allowing 1.5 yards per carry, that’s leading to a slew of third-and-long situations, and that’s partly why this is one of the best Ds in America on third downs, allowing teams to convert just 17% of their chances.

On the flip side, for all of the positives on the West Virginia defense, it’s not coming up with third down stops, the team has its own penalty and turnover concerns, and …

Week 4 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

JT Daniels along with the West Virginia running game will be too much.

Yes, Virginia Tech’s defense has been incredible so far. Yes, it currently ranks among the best in the nation. And yes, Old Dominion, Boston College, and Wofford don’t have the attacks the Mountaineers are bringing into town.

There won’t be the problems like there were against Old Dominion, but Hokie QB Grant Wells will throw a few picks, Daniels will get just enough time to work, and the West Virginia will keep clawing its way back into the season.

West Virginia vs Towson Game Preview

Why Towson Will Win

The Tigers have started the season hot with a 2-0 start, an overtime win over Bucknell, and a tough battle with Morgan State.

The offense has’t been anything amazing, but it controls the clock, it’s hitting the third down plays, and the defense is holding firm with good line play and toughness against the run.

West Virginia is struggling. It played well enough to potentially win its first two games, but it’s not winning the turnover battle, the secondary is having problems, and the defense that was supposed to be a plus got rocked by both Pitt and Kansas.

On the plus side …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why West Virginia Will Win

The Mountaineers are moving the ball.

JT Daniels has been solid, the team has enough offensive weapons to spread it around, and there’s a good enough balance to do whatever it wants against the Towson D.

As good as the Tigers have been, they’re not generating enough consistent pressure. As long as West Virginia can slow down with the mistakes – four turnovers and 19 penalties in two games – is shouldn’t have a problem. The lines will take over.

Week 3 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

West Virginia needs a reset.

With three road games in the next four dates and nothing easy the rest of the way, it has to get the defense to start making more big things happen on third downs, the offense has to control the tempo a bit better, and everything has to flip after the rough start.

Playing Towson won’t solve all of the problems, but after the way the season started, the home side is going to try.

Kansas vs West Virginia Game Preview

Why Kansas Will Win

Kansas had an … easy win?

Not even the FCS cupcake games are sure-thing layups for the Jayhawks over the years, but the program has players now, it has a head coach in Lance Leipold armed with a contract boost, and this whole thing might start to turn fast.

It’s still going to be a struggle in the Big 12, but the offense was balanced in the 56-10 win over Tennessee Tech, QB Jalon Daniels continues to prove he’s going to be a problem for the rest of the conference, and the running game that ran for six touchdowns and close to ten yards per carry should be able to …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why West Virginia Will Win

It’s not going to be easy for Kansas to run.

West Virginia lost in a good 38-31 battle with Pitt, but it got a huge day out of a defensive front that lived behind the line and didn’t give up a thing on the ground.

So what went wrong? Too many penalty, two turnovers, and a hot Kedon Slovis in the clutch ended up being the difference, but the offense was balanced, JT Daniels was fine – even if there weren’t enough downfield plays – and …

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Welcome to CJ Donaldson.

The big freshman tight end/running back/receiver/Cordarrelle Patterson made things happen whenever he had the ball in his hands, Daniels is going to get more time to work than he had against the Panthers, and the defense will take care of the rest.

This isn’t going to be your normal Kansas pushover – again, it has playmakers now – but the West Virginia lines will own this.

West Virginia vs Pitt Game Preview

Why West Virginia Will Win

In the battle of USC quarterbacks, West Virginia might have landed the best of the bunch.

It’s not like the Mountaineer offense was all that bad last year, but it wasn’t consistent. Now it’s about to crank things up a few notches with former USC offensive coordinator Graham Harrell getting to coach up JT Daniels, the former Trojan super-recruit who got hurt, went to Georgia, got hurt, and landed in Morgantown with the upside to put up a massive season if he can stay healthy.

The West Virginia front five is loaded with all-star veterans and should be the best yet in the Neal Brown era. There’s going to be a big problem for the home team if the secondary – that’s always feast-or-famine under Pat Narduzzi, giving up 264 yards per game last season – doesn’t get enough help from the line.

When he’s in a groove, Daniels is a special talent, the Mountaineer defense should be every bit as strong as last year’s bunch that allowed just 350 yards per game, but …

Why Pitt Will Win

The West Virginia offensive line has to prove it.

It might be experienced, and it might be better, but it also didn’t do much of anything last year for the running game and was the worst in the Big 12 in sacks and tackles for loss allowed.

There’s no time to gear up – the Pitt defensive front lives rent free in opposing backfields.

The Panthers were No. 1 in the ACC against the run – granted, that’s because everyone was busy throwing on the questionable secondary – was second in the nation behind Oklahoma State in sacks, and was fifth in the country in tackles for loss.

Start with Habakkuk Baldonado on the outside, Calijah Kancey on the inside, and a linebacking corps that gets all over the field, and Daniels and the rest of the backfield are going to be under a whole bunch of pressure all game long.

And on the other side …

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Thursday & Friday

What’s Going To Happen

That Kedon Slovis guy is pretty good.

The Panthers might not have Kenny Pickett around anymore, and Jordan Addison might be off catching passes on the coast at USC, but Trojan transfer Slovis can carry the workload. He’s not going to have to do it all alone – there will be a bit more balance to keep everything moving.

The return of the Backyard Brawl will be worth the wait.

These two rivals haven’t played since 2011 – 21-20 West Virginia win. This time around, 21-20 might be the first half.

Daniels will take his share of shots both down the field and from the Pitt defensive front on the way to a huge passing day, but it won’t be quite enough to overcome a solid day from Slovis that will be a back-and-forth fight that goes down to the final drive.

Neal Brown hasn’t been able to make this work quite yet – but the production and the wins appear to be coming.

Great at Troy – with three straight ten-win seasons before coming to Morgantown – the young rising star had to do some tweaking, the team went to two bowl games in his three seasons, and now comes the pivot.

17-18 overall and 11-15 in the Big 12 over the last three seasons. That’s not quite what everyone had in mind.

Brown and the program had to get back to the recent days of Will Grier and the offense rolling up huge numbers, all while hoping for the defense to keep on building up and being stronger.

Enter offensive coordinator Graham Harrell, here comes the big passing attack, now this might be the year West Virginia can break through and become a bigger factor in the Big 12 conference title chase.

There are still some major position battles to figure out, but …

2022 Preseason CFN Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year

RB Bijan Robinson, Jr. Texas

Okay, so he has been a bit more promise than actual production, but the superstar prospect has been outstanding when healthy, and now he should be the main man for a loaded Texas offense loaded with skill talent.

He’s got the size, quickness, and burst, running for 1,830 yards and 15 touchdowns with 41 catches and six scores in his first two years – but he can to a whole lot more. He’s an NFL starting running back hanging out in college, and now it’s salary drive time with a possible Heisman run along the way.

2022 Preseason CFN Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year

DE Will McDonald, Sr. Iowa State

The Cyclones might be in a bit of a rebuilding mode, but the defense should still be terrific starting with they’re outstanding two-time First Team All-Big 12 – and 2021 All-American – pass rusher who’s back for his fifth season.

The 6-3, 236-pounder started out well in his first two seasons, and then blew up with 22 sacks and 26 tackles for loss over the last two seasons from his hybrid position on the outside.
