West Virginia vs Iowa State Game Preview

Why West Virginia Will Win

The Iowa State defense might be amazing, but the offense isn’t going to do anything on the ground – it hasn’t hit 100 yards in any of the last five games.

Can West Virginia hold up against Hunter Dekkers and the passing attack? It was able to win against Baylor even when it got rocked for over 400 yards, but that’s not really the concern.

The issue is against teams that run well – 2-1 against teams that don’t run for 100 yards against this D and 1-4 when allowing more – and again, that’s not Iowa State.

West Virginia will always throw well, it has enough offense to get out to a good start, and cranking up a few scoring drives early should be enough. Iowa State doesn’t have the explosion to keep up, but …

Breaking down the CFP Top 25 rankings

Why Iowa State Will Win

West Virginia doesn’t win when it doesn’t run.

JT Daniels has been excellent, and again, the passing game is solid, and the defense is disruptive and enough to come up with a slew of plays behind the line. No, Iowa State’s won’t run well, and the offense won’t do enough, but that’s okay.

The No. 1 defense in the Big 12 should be able to take over.

No one’s running all that well on the Cyclone defensive front that’s second in the Big 12 in run D. No one has been able to get to 200 yards, and only Oklahoma and Texas have pushed well past 130.

West Virginia is 3-0 when it runs for 200 yards or more and and 0-5 when it doesn’t.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

West Virginia isn’t going to run for 200 yards.

Iowa State might not be anything special offensively, and it’s going to be like pulling teeth at times to get the attack moving, but the defense will rise up and keep the Mountaineers from finding any sort of a steady groove.

The Cyclones will win enough on third downs to stay in control of the game throughout.

TCU vs West Virginia Game Preview

Why TCU Will Win

The Horned Frogs keep getting tested, and they keep finding ways to come through.

Whether it was the offense going crazy on Oklahoma for 668 yards, to fighting through at Kansas, to surviving a great battle with Oklahoma State, to pushing though a Kansas State team that had the program’s number, 7-0 is 7-0 for a reason.

TCU is terrific.

The offense is keeping the chains moving, it’s No. 3 in the country in yards and scoring – it’s not like there are a ton of lightweights on the slate – and there aren’t any mistakes with just four turnovers so far.

On the other side, West Virginia’s defense is getting torched lately allowing close to 600 yards against both Baylor and Texas Tech. It’s now dead last in the Big 12 in scoring defense, it’s not forcing enough takeaways, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 8

Why West Virginia Will Win

There’s a chance West Virginia rises back up at home and comes up with something special.

It’s been sort of crazy, but the home teams have gone 8-0 in the Big 12 over the last two weeks, and the Mountaineers were a part of that with the wild 43-40 win over Baylor. This is just the team’s second home game since September 17th, and it’s going to be a charged up atmosphere.

The Mountaineers have the steady offense to keep on coming, the running game is strong enough pound away a bit, and JT Daniels should throw for well over 200 yards, but …

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

TCU has caught a few opposing quarterback breaks.

It knocked out Oklahoma’s Dillon Gabriel – that was wrong, but the Sooner defense was the real problem in the 55-24 Horned Frog win. The next week, Jalon Daniels left with an injury in the Kansas loss to TCU, and last week Kansas State’s Adrian Martinez left right away and backup Will Howard got dinged up.

TCU will pull this off whether or not Daniels is able to get through it – the Horned Frog offense will be too good against the mediocre West Virginia D – but this will be another wild Big 12 back-and-forth fight.

West Virginia vs Texas Tech Game Preview

Why West Virginia Will Win

Will the Texas Tech quarterback situation ever be fully settled?

Donovan Smith was good, but he’s still banged up. Tyler Shough was supposed to be the main man, but he hasn’t been able to do much of anything with his own injury.

Behren Morton stepped in and threw for 379 yards and two touchdowns in the loss to Oklahoma State, but the O wasn’t able to keep up in the 41-31 loss. He is more than fine and he’ll throw well, but his counterpart has been steadier.

JT Daniels isn’t bombing away, and he hasn’t thrown multiple touchdown passes in over a month, but he’s consistently doing what the offense needs. The running game is rolling, the offense leads the Big 12 in time of possession, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Texas Tech Will Win

The passing game is working no matter what.

Morton has the upside to be the future along with the present of the Texas Tech program – the offense will throw for well over 300 yards.

The Mountaineer defense hasn’t been awful, but the secondary allowed 757 yards and seven touchdowns over the last two weeks. It’s about to give up at least 350 yards and a few scores.

The passing attack is second in the nation behind Washington, the defense has been good enough on third downs and allows the fewest first downs in the Big 12. It’ll get pounded on a bit by the West Virginia offensive balance, but it should be able to hold up in key spots.

– Game Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

The Texas Tech pass rush will get to Daniels just enough to matter.

It’ll be a fun back-and-forth shootout with the Mountaineer secondary allowing well over 300 yards for the third straight game.

This will be fun.

Texas vs West Virginia Game Preview

Why West Virginia Will Win

The Mountaineers have the offensive balance, and they have the run defense. That should be enough to at least keep up.

JT Daniels has been steady and terrific so far – the passing game might not be explosive, but it works – and the creativity is there to mix up the attack to get all the parts involved.

The defense might have issues against the better quarterbacks, but the team leads all Big 12 teams in time of possession, the pass rush is solid, and the run D has been great over the last few weeks.

But …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Texas Will Win

Can the D keep up with a strong attack?

Virginia Tech doesn’t have enough offensive weapons – West Virginia didn’t have much of a problem last week. However, Kansas was almost perfectly balanced in its 55-42 win, and Pitt keep on throwing without a problem in its win.

The D doesn’t take the ball away enough, and there aren’t quite enough tackles for loss even though the pass rush isn’t bad.

Texas might be coming off a rough loss to Texas Tech, but the offense was okay, Bijan Robinson has been outstanding over the last few games, and the offensive line should be able to more than hold its own against the Mountaineer defensive front.

Commit to the run early, and the offense will work.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Texas just can’t seem to finish the drill.

It was one stop away from beating Alabama. It was one stop away from beating Texas Tech. It has yet to go full-throttle with the go-go style Steve Sarkisian wants to play, but the deep shots will be there to open things up just enough to give Robinson room.

Daniels will do fine against the Longhorn secondary, but Texas will get out with a good win with a bit more happening from the run D.
