We’ll find out how real Oregon State is.

After ending their 2021 season in the Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl against Utah State, the Oregon State Beavers will get a double dose of Mountain West football action in hosting Boise State to open 2022 and then hitting the road to face Fresno State a week later.

The Beavers were one of last year’s most feel-good stories, the culmination of a years-long rebuild in which they took down USC and Utah, among others. With the element of surprise behind them at this point, Oregon State will take the best shots from two of the Mountain West’s top contenders this fall.

Location: Corvallis, Oregon

Conference: Pac-12

Series History: Oregon State leads the all-time series against Boise State, 5-4, but they trail Fresno State in that series by a 8-5 margin.

2021 Record: 7-6 (5-4 Pac-12)

Head Coach: Jonathan Smith (fifth year, 16-28 overall). Oregon State isn’t the hardest job in college football, but it’s definitely not the easiest one, either. It’s to Smith’s credit, then, that he picked up the pieces left behind by Gary Andersen and went about the slow process of bringing the program back to respectability.

2021 marked the Beavers’ first winning campaign in eight years and they did it on the strength of a powerful offense that knew how to run the ball and a defense that knew how to protect its home turf. Now comes the hard part: Can the Beavers sustain their success in a wide-open division?

Key Players

Omar Speights, LB

Speights wasn’t a first-team all-conference pick last year like linebacker mate Andre Roberts, but he was still good enough to warrant an honorable mention after collecting 89 tackles and five tackles for loss. Now that Roberts has moved on, Speights will be counted upon as the main anchor in the middle of the Beavers defense.

Deshaun Fenwick, RB

Fenwick mostly played second fiddle to B.J. Baylor last year, but he had some opportunities to shine last year and proved he might have what it takes to step into a lead role. He ran for 127 yards in a close loss to Washington State and finished the year averaging 5.78 yards per carry with four touchdowns. Listed at 6-foot-2 and 231 pounds, at the very least he’ll be no fun to try and tackle.

Alex Austin, CB

Austin played his way into the starting lineup during the shortened 2020 season and improved enough to be considered Oregon State’s best cornerback by the end of last year. He had 47 tackles, seven passes defended and two interceptions in 2021 and is still just a redshirt sophomore, so big things could lie ahead for the Long Beach native.

Luke Musgrave, TE

The Beavers always seem to have unheralded tight ends with a knack for making timely catches and Musgrave is no exception. Playing alongside Teagan Quitoriano last season, he grabbed 22 balls for 304 yards and a touchdown; with a dearth of experienced hands around him this fall, he could be in line for more targets per game.

Isaac Hodgins, DE

If the surname sounds familiar, that’s because former Oregon State star Isaiah Hodgins is his brother. Isaac has been able to make a name for himself, too, though he missed all of 2021 after suffering a broken foot. With 30 career starts to his name and 9.5 tackles for loss and five sacks in that time, he can still be an impact player if he makes it back to 100%.

Overview:

Offense

The Beavers made their mark last year with an offense that led the Pac-12 in yards per play (6.43, which was also a program record) and finished in the top 25 nationally by points per drive and available yards percentage. The offensive line was a finalist for the Joe Moore Award and they could boast the Pac-12’s rushing champion. Things are fine, right?

Well, that rushing champion, B.J. Baylor, is gone along with two of last year’s starters on that line, Nathan Eldridge and Nous Keobounnam. They were also much more careless with the football away from the friendly confines of Reser Stadium, with six giveaways at home and twelve on the road. Starting quarterback Chance Nolan hasn’t yet be guaranteed he’ll continue on as QB1, either, with 2020 starter Tristan Gebbia and redshirt freshman Ben Gulbranson in the mix to compete into fall camp.

However, between Fenwick and Trey Lowe (363 rushing yards, 6.4 YPC), the running game should be in good shape. The offensive line still has plenty of experience, too: Left guard Marco Brewer only made five starts replacing an injured Jake Levengood down the stretch, but Pro Football Focus graded him as the third-best guard in the country (for the record, Levengood was 37th). Tackles Brandon Kipper and Joshua Gray also graded fifth and seventh, respectively, among Pac-12 players at the position.

The passing game’s biggest challenge will be replacing top receiver Trevon Bradford as well as tight end Quitoriano, but Musgrave, Tre’Shaun Harrison (29 catches, 401 yards, 3 TDs), and others should help pick up the slack. There may not be a 1,000-yard receiver in the bunch, but they didn’t need it to be successful last season.

Defense

While the offense performed at much the same level whether at home or on the road, the defensive splits were not so kind. On the aggregate, the Beavers ranked 111th in available yards percentage allowed and 99th in points allowed per drive, so their ability to hold on to last year’s gains may depend on how well they rectify last year’s shortcomings here.

Having nine starters back for 2022 will help, but this group struggled to get to the quarterback last year and managed a team sack rate of only 4%, which ranked 120th among FBS teams. A return to form by Hodgins could help, but it might well be a group effort involving everyone from Florida transfer Andrew Chatfield to junior linebacker Riley Sharp (three sacks, most among returners) to redshirt sophomore Cory Stover.

The secondary should improve, too, since it returns intact after finishing third in the Pac-12 with 64 total passes defended. Austin and Rejzohn Wright provide a reliable cornerback tandem; safety Kitan Oladipo (nine passes defended, six tackles for loss) earned an all-conference honorable mention while Alton Julian should be healthy after missing the second half of 2021 with a knee injury.

Early Predictions

After last year’s breakout, neither the Broncos nor the Bulldogs will take Oregon State lightly. The upside for both is that they should be well-equipped to take advantage of a Beavers defense with plenty of questions left to resolve, so while neither will run away from OSU, they should be able to come away with victories.

New Mexico Football: First Look At The Maine Black Bears

New Mexico Football: First Look At The Maine Black Bears

The Lobos will open their 2022 football season against a Maine squad that’s tougher than you think.

Maine is starting a new chapter of its own.

The New Mexico Lobos will begin year three of the Danny Gonzales era at home against the Maine Black Bears, an opponent who will be searching for improvements of its own this fall.

Since winning the CAA conference in 2018, the program stagnated in the last few years and has played roughly .500 ball in the last three seasons. With a new head coach in the mix, however, the Black Bears won’t be afraid of an early road test.

Location: Orono, Maine

Conference: Colonial Athletic Association

Series History: This will be the first meeting between New Mexico and Maine.

2021 Record: 6-5 (4-4 CAA)

Head Coach: Jordan Stevens (first year). After losing Nick Charlton to UConn this off-season, the Black Bears didn’t have to look too far to find his replacement in early December.

This will be Stevens’s first stint as a head coach, but he’s a former Black Bear player who first cut his teeth on Maine’s sidelines as a defensive line coach after wrapping up his playing days. He then left for Yale in 2015 and was elevated to co-defensive coordinator in 2018, just in time to help guide the Bulldogs to its 16th Ivy League title the following year.

They remained stingy upon returning to play in 2021, finishing 16th among FCS teams in allowing 4.72 yards per play while leading the country with a third-down conversion rate of just 22.1%. Surely, that made putting in a call to New Haven a pretty easy choice.

Key Players

Michael Gerace, OL

One of two Maine players to be named a first-team all-CAA selection last season, Gerace is one of the longest-tenured Black Bears on the roster. He’s appeared in 39 games since 2018, including 35 starts, and set a new personal best in 2021 with a 73.1 overall grade from Pro Football Focus, the eighth-best mark among FCS centers.

Freddie Brock, RB

After getting his feet wet during the FCS’s 2021 spring season, Brock emerged as one of the CAA’s top young running backs in the fall. He led the Black Bears with ten total touchdowns on the strength of 857 all-purpose yards, so chances are he’ll continue to be a focal point of the Maine offense.

Shakur Smalls, SS

Smalls impressed in his first extended run as a starter, tying for the team lead with six pass breakups to go along with 53 total tackles, two forced fumbles and two interceptions. According to Pro Football Focus, he also accrued a pass-coverage grade of 76.4, meaning that there’s plenty of room for growth.

Khairi Manns, DL

If you’ll pardon a pun, Manns has almost done enough between the Black Bears’ spring and fall seasons last year to be… Maine’s main man. Once the groans have subsided, just make note that he’s already racked up nine tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks in 15 games.

Joe Fagnano, QB

Fagnano only got to play in four games last fall because he suffered a high ankle sprain that knocked out him for most of the year, but there’s no doubt he’s a difference maker when healthy. In sixteen career games, he owns a 62% completion rate and has thrown for 3,424 yards and 31 touchdowns, with an interception rate of just 1.5%.

Need more proof? In his last two starts of 2021, Fagnano led Maine to a 25-point win over UMass and then rallied the team from an early 13-point deficit to defeat rival New Hampshire.

Overview:

Offense

Fagnano’s absence did a number on Maine’s entire offense last fall, especially since backup quarterback Derek Robertson only completed 50.8% of his throws and averaged just 6.3 yards per attempt. As a result, the Black Bears managed just 5.27 yards per play and scored 25 points per game.

Assuming a clean bill of health, though, Maine could rebound with Fagnano and Brock in the backfield, though the offense must find a way to replace their top two pass catchers, including all-conference wide receiver Andre Miller. Senior tight end Shawn Bowman (24 catches, 282 yards, four TDs) should help fill some of that void, but more will be expected of veterans like Montigo Moss, Jacob Hennie, and Zavier Scott.

Defense

The famed “Black Hole” defense was merely okay in 2021, allowing 27 points a game while giving up 5.94 yards per play. However, those averages ranked 10th and 11th, respectively, in the CAA and Stevens’s return as head coach almost certainly signals an intent of return to prominence on this side of the ball.

Despite the loss of star linebacker Ray Miller, Maine isn’t empty-handed on defense. Manns and the linebacker pair of Xavier Nurse and Adrian Otero (123 combined tackles, 6.5 combined TFLs) give them reliable veterans in the front seven, while Smalls and Robbie Riobe provide a solid safety tandem. They also return cornerback Buggs Brown, who led the team with three interceptions as a freshman and figured to be integral to the defense’s future after cracking the starting lineup in the second half of last season.

Early Prediction

The Black Bears won’t be the toughest FCS squad that a Mountain West team faces this season, but they have enough talent to pose a reasonable test for New Mexico. However, the Lobos should have enough on offense to take advantage of a Maine defense that wasn’t especially adept at anything last season and now must improve without a number of key contributors.

New Mexico 27, Maine 17

The first round of the 2021 College Football Playoff rankings are out. How did the committee do?

The CFP committee goes pick by pick by pick, meticulously debating and scrutinizing each spot. There’s a thought process behind every part of the ranking.

Before breaking down every pick …

No UTSA. In a bit of a stunner, the unbeaten Roadrunners – with a win over Illinois on the road – weren’t thrown a bone and didn’t make the Top 25 cut.

The one other whiff … Arkansas. If you’re going to give love and respect to 3-loss Wisconsin, then Hog wins over Texas and Texas A&M – and acceptable losses to Georgia, Ole Miss, and Auburn – should’ve been enough for the top 25.

No American Athletic Conference teams got in besides Cincinnati. Houston? SMU? Nope. Outside of a few Mountain West teams, the committee just thunder-dunked on the Group of Five schedules.

Apparently, the committee really, really paid attention to the schedules. It punished teams that didn’t have a slew of big wins over top teams, and it didn’t over-love the teams with just one great victory and not much else.

This isn’t bad. There’s always some nitpicking with these things, but as the opening run of the College Football Playoff rankings go, this was a strong first effort.

These get thrown out and it all starts over next week. Did you win your Power Five conference championship? Did you finish unbeaten or with one loss? That’s all that really matters. And with that, the reaction of every top 25 slot in the first College Football Playoff Rankings of 2021.

College Football Playoff Rankings Top 25 Reaction

Top 20 | Top 10 | Top 4

25. Pittsburgh Panthers 6-2

The committee must of loved the wins over Tennessee and Clemson, but there wasn’t much of a punishment for losing to Western Michigan. It’s fine, but 8-0 UTSA probably should’ve slipped in here.

24. San Diego State Aztecs 6-1

This is all about the win over Utah. Beating Arizona isn’t that big of a deal, but it’s a Power Five road victory – there isn’t a whole lot more to go off of. The committee likely loved the great defense, and again, gave credit for the win over the Utes.

23. Fresno State Bulldogs 7-2

This is too low. It’s good that the committee got Fresno State in, and 23 really is fine considering one loss was to Hawaii in Honolulu, but the other loss was to Oregon. Winning at UCLA was good, beating Nevada was sneaky-great, and being the team that handed San Diego State its first loss was big.

22. Iowa Hawkeyes 6-2

Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, okay, but this one is a bit rough considering how bad the Iowa offense is. The road win over Iowa State by ten and the victory over Penn State appeared to be enough to sneak the Hawkeyes in.

21. Wisconsin Badgers 5-3

This is a TON of love being given to one win over Iowa. For the committee, though, it’s about the team as a whole, and it has to like one of the best defenses in America for a team on a four-game winning streak. This one’s a tad questionable, though.

All of a sudden, doing this requires a little bit of work.

Do you really believe Oregon will get through the season with just one loss or undefeated? Do you really buy into Iowa now? As always, this can and will change wildly during the season.

One key thing to remember – ESPN wants good matchups, and it’s going to do everything possible to get them. Also, more than ever after last season, the bowl games are going to want fans in the stands.

One final thing – the Redbox Bowl in the Santa Clara is taking another year off. That takes out spots for both the Big Ten and Pac-12.

5. Chicago Bears at Los Angeles Rams

Line: Los Angeles -7.5
ATS Pick: Los Angeles

In Week 1, always like the underdogs by more than a touchdown – like Dallas on Thursday night against Tampa Bay – and always assume that the professional coaching staff on the big underdog side has something interesting ready to go to counteract what everyone knows is true.

In this case, just assume that Matt Nagy and the Bear coaches will find some way to overcome their abysmal offensive line to prevent Aaron Donald and company from jumping on Andy Dalton’s head all game long.

And about Dalton – he’s not going to be awful. It still won’t be enough.

The Bears will be okay, and the defense will have its moments, but Khalil Mack isn’t anywhere close to 100% – the line has to get to Matthew Stafford, or uh oh – and the Chicago offensive line really is going to be an issue.

LA won last year 24-10, and this time around it’s the opener in front of a whole lot of fans in the shiny stadium on Sunday night with the world watching.

Under pressure, Dalton throws a late pick that turns into Ram points to cover.
