Bowl Projections: Final Call

Here we go – the final call before the official announcements on all the bowl games and College Football Playoff matchups come out on Sunday.

We’ll adjust on the fly as news and rumors trickle out, but for now, the goal is to get these as close to the pin as possible after the Championship Weekend.

At the very least, we’ve got the College Football Playoff and New Year’s Six games right … we think.

Teams that accepted bowl bid are in red.

CFP Chase: Ranking 6 Teams Still Alive

Bowl Projections: Championship Week

We knew there were going to be twists and turns, but adding a new bowl at the last possible moment? That’s a new one.

There was supposed to be a bowl in San Francisco/Santa Clara this year, but it was postponed/cancelled. With two more eligible schools than bowl games,  another random bowl game in Texas was added.

As of right now there’s no date, time, or anything else, but this allows two Group of Five programs to get in, lets a 6-7 Hawaii play in the Hawaii Bowl, and everything is all neat and tidy …

Ha! The entire puzzle and all we’ve done over the last few months had to be blown up and redone from scratch.

Before Championship Week kicks in, here are the latest bowl projections and College Football Playoff predictions with one key caveat. For the earlier, less prestigious bowls, the conference tie-ins only mean so much. It’s about best matchups, most interest, and the best opportunities to get butts in seats – it’s about whatever ESPN wants.

We already have a few accepted bids – the Bahamas and Hawaii are set to allow extra travel time.

Teams that accepted bowl bid are in red.

Where are the Oklahoma Sooners headed in USA TODAY Sports’ latest Bowl Projections?

Where are the Oklahoma Sooners headed in USA TODAY Sports’ latest Bowl Projections?

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbz7cqqgxy50qwt player_id=none image=https://soonerswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

In a season filled with twists and turns, ups and downs, and has kept our head spinning, the Oklahoma Sooners still have a bowl game to prepare for. Stepping in to help the Sooners is former coach Bob Stoops on an interim basis in the wake of Lincoln Riley’s departure for USC.

Though it wasn’t the ending they wanted in their 37-33 loss to the Oklahoma State Cowboys, the Sooners finished the season with a 10-2 record and a chance to play in the postseason. One more shot to make a statement on the 2021 season.

Though much of the focus for the Sooners has been on player retention and recruiting, they still have a game to play in a few weeks’ time. In the latest bowl projections from USA TODAY Sports, it’s expected that the Sooners will take on the Oregon Ducks in a matchup of top 15 programs in the Alamo Bowl.

The Ducks, like Oklahoma, looked like a team destined for a playoff spot just a few short weeks ago. And like Oklahoma, they fell at the hands of a ranked team, knocking them down the pecking order in the College Football Playoff rankings.

If that’s the game the Sooners end up getting, it will be one met with much anticipation. In a September non-conference matchup of No. 15 Oklahoma and No. 18 Oregon in 2006, the officials reviewed the onside kick at the end of the game and incorrectly ruled the ball was first touched by an Oklahoma player when it was in fact touched by the Ducks before the 10-yard restricted zone. Then on the ensuing drive, on a pass attempt from Dennis Dixon, the Sooners were called for pass interference, setting up Oregon’s go-ahead touchdown with under a minute to play.

If these projections were to play out, it would be the first time the two sides will have met up since that fateful September day in 2006.

That flipped fast.

Just when it seemed like there would be a whole lot of bowl openings, Tulsa shocked SMU to get eligible, LSU and Florida won to give the SEC 13 out of its 14 teams to six wins, and now there are too many teams for the slots.

This all goes down next Sunday, and we’ll update on the fly if there are any changes or big announcements.

Where are the Oklahoma Sooners headed in ESPN’s latest Bowl Projections?

Where are the Oklahoma Sooners headed in ESPN’s latest bowl projections after their week 12 win over the Iowa State Cyclones?

[mm-video type=video id=01fn1xhjnybe44ch1e4n playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fn1xhjnybe44ch1e4n/01fn1xhjnybe44ch1e4n-e41c6db6b1cd5d39b80f8b17b4918e9e.jpg]

Last week after the Sooners’ loss to the Baylor Bears, the Oklahoma Sooners were heading to the Sugar Bowl in ESPN’s bowl projections. Their win over Iowa State didn’t do much to solidify their spot in the New Year’s Six bowl as ESPN now has a different landing spot for the Sooners this postseason.

The Valero Alamo Bowl.

Both Mark Schlabach and Kyle Bonagura of ESPN have the Sooners heading to San Antonio to play in the Alamo Bowl (ESPN+), a game that has brought so much fun and optimism to Oklahoma’s rivals, the Texas Longhorns.

Schlabach has the Oklahoma Sooners playing the Arizona State Sundevils while Bonagura projects the UCLA Bruins as the Sooners’ opponent in the Alamodome.

Of the two projected opponents, a game against the Bruins and former Oregon Ducks coach Chip Kelly would potentially be more fun with the offense that Kelly could put on the field against the Sooners.

The Alamo Bowl would certainly be a letdown based on preseason expectations that had the Oklahoma Sooners contending for a spot in the College Football Playoff. Though they’re still somewhat of a longshot to play in the playoff, their odds increased according to FiveThirtyEight’s projections after week 12 play.

The Oklahoma Sooners have never played in the Alamo Bowl in the 28-year run of the bowl game. Win against the Oklahoma State Cowboys this week and in the Big 12 championship, and the Sooners can continue to stay away from San Antonio in postseason action.

Bowl Projections: Week 12

Okay, now this gets really, really funky – there probably won’t be enough bowl eligible teams.

As we said last week, this goes off of the Academic Progress Rate, and the latest edition came out last year. So with that in mind – everyone thinks the 2020 list is the right on – here are the potential teams that could be bowl eligible based on their APR if they finish 5-7. In order, it goes …

– Middle Tennessee – if it doesn’t beat Florida Atlantic
– Rutgers (So, if you’re a fan of one of the teams below this, root for Rutgers to beat Maryland this weekend.)
– Cal – if it wins once against UCLA and/or USC
– Texas – if it beats Kansas State
– Florida – if it doesn’t beat Florida State
– Illinois – if it beats Northwestern

Key Bubble Teams Projected In & Out
Need 6 wins to be bowl eligible

Projected In
– Charlotte vs Old Dominion winner
– Florida State at Florida winner
– Maryland at Rutgers winner

Projected Out
– Charlotte at Old Dominion loser
– Florida State at Florida loser
– LSU (5-6: Texas A&M)
– Maryland at Rutgers loser
– San Jose State (5-6: Fresno State)
– South Alabama (5-6: Coastal Carolina)
– USC (4-6: BYU, at Cal)
– Virginia Tech (5-6: at Virginia)

Key Bubble Teams Projected In & Out
Need 6 wins to be bowl eligible

Projected In: Charlotte (5-5: Marshall at Old Dominion)
– Missouri (5-5: Florida, at Arkansas)
– Maryland vs Rutgers winner

Projected Out:  LSU (4-6: ULM, Texas A&M)
– Old Dominion (4-6: at Middle Tennessee, Charlotte)
– San Jose State (5-6: Fresno State)
– South Alabama (5-5: at Tennessee, Coastal Carolina)
– South Carolina (5-5: Auburn, Clemson)
– Syracuse (5-5: at NC State, Pitt)
– Texas (4-6: at West Virginia, Kansas State)
– USC (4-5: UCLA, BYU, at Cal)
– Virginia Tech (5-5: at Miami, at Virginia)
– Maryland vs Rutgers loser

Before we get going, here’s the crazy call that we think we have right, and begging all forgiveness in the meantime as everyone is checking to make sure.

There probably won’t be enough six-win, bowl eligible teams. With 4-7 Hawaii losing to UNLV yesterday, it probably won’t get to six – it normally needs seven – with Colorado State and at Wyoming to close. So …

It comes down to the top five-win teams among the Graduation Success Rate. Of the teams ranked highest on GSR that should matter for …

– Illinois (4-6: GSR 90, at Illinois, Northwestern)
– South Carolina (5-5: GSR 89, Auburn, Clemson)
– Syracuse (5-5: GSR 88, at NC State, Pitt)

Again, looking into this as we speak – assuming things go back to the way they were before 2020 – but for now we’ll slip in one five-win team into the mix.
