How Brendon Todd overcame the yips and won in Bermuda

Having endured a prolonged slump, Todd’s victory at the Bermuda Championship completed an epic comeback.

[jwplayer 5RjeB7MR-9JtFt04J]

Leave it to Brendon Todd to solve the mystery of his missing game in Bermuda of all places.

Planes and ships that famously vanished in the Bermuda Triangle were less lost than Todd, a 34-year-old PGA Tour journeyman, who suffered through a stretch of missing 37 cuts in 41 starts between 2016 and 2018 and plummeted to No. 2006 in the world at the start of the year. But on Nov. 3, Todd capped off a remarkable comeback by playing 9 under in his first 11 holes en route to shooting a final-round 62 to win the Tour’s inaugural Bermuda Championship by four strokes over Henry Higgs.

“I went and found the wrecked ship and put it back together,” Todd said ahead of the Mayakoba Golf Classic, where he makes his first start Thursday since returning to the winner’s circle.

When asked to recall how his game went south, Todd can identify the exact moment it began to spin out of control. He was playing in the final pairing in the third round of the 2015 BMW Championship after shooting 66-63 and on the fourth hole he blocked a 4-iron 50 yards right that landed one hole over in a bush. He took a drop for an unplayable lie, made a triple bogey and shot 76, but that was just the beginning of his travails.

“I started seeing this right shot in my head and I couldn’t shake it,” he said. “The damage to my mind was done.”

Todd developed the nasty affliction known as the yips, an involuntary loss of control that typically affects a player’s nerves on short putts. Todd suffered from the full-swing yips.

“It’s really not using your mind the right way,” Todd explained. “Your fear takes over and blocks your instincts from doing what comes naturally. Once you see the bad result you have a fear of the same outcome until you fix it.”

This wasn’t the first time Todd had endured the loss of his game. In 2010, he missed the cut in all 13 of his starts on the Korn Ferry Tour and didn’t earn a check. But by 2014, Todd won the PGA Tour’s Byron Nelson Championship and climbed into the top 50 in the world. This slump, however, proved to be a longer journey into darkness.

“All of us as pros who knew him felt so bad for the struggles he went through,” said Matt Kuchar, the defending champion of the Mayakoba Golf Classic. “He went down to the bottom. He wasn’t just missing cuts. He was struggling to break 80.”

Todd sought answers from multiple teachers, but nothing seemed to help. That is until David Denham, a teammate from Todd’s 2005 National Championship squad at Georgia, suggested he consider working with Bradley Hughes, an Australian who won seven tournaments around the world as a pro before becoming an instructor. Todd bought Hughes’s $9 instructional e-book “The Victors,” and read it at the beach on family vacation and called him for a lesson.

“He didn’t want a paint-by-numbers (swing,) as he called it,” Hughes said. “He wanted to trust that the club was going to do what it should do.”

Around the same time, caddie Ward Jarvis suggested Todd read another book to help the mental side of his game, “The Phenomenon: Pressure, the Yips, and the Pitch that Changed My Life,” by former pitcher Rick Ankiel.

Brendon Todd finally saw the light at the end of the tunnel after a prolonged slump. Tracy Wilcox/Golfweek

Still, as 2018 neared its end, Todd met with his financial adviser and discussed pursuing other careers. He looked into opening a pizza franchise. In November, he shot 61 to qualify for the RSM Classic and posted four rounds in the 60s. He put the pizza plans on hold. By April, the fog had lifted and Todd’s confidence in his swing reemerged. Regaining his playing privileges through Korn Ferry Tour Finals was big, but Todd had grander ambitions. Hughes recalls Todd looking him in the eye and declaring he was going to win again.

“Mate, I have no doubts,” Hughes said. “There were a lot of doubters but neither of them were us.”

Todd’s victory earned him the security of a two-year exemption, berths in the Sentry Tournament of Champions and Players Championship, but not an upgrade on his flight home.

“I either had a beer or a phone in my hand texting from the minute I won, so all of a sudden I was walking on the airplane and I was like, ‘I wonder what seat I’m in?’ And I looked up and there I was 16E, middle seat. You know what? That stuff matters so little to me. I’ve been flying to and from Monday qualifiers for the past three years. Do you really think I care about sitting in the middle seat on the way home from my second victory?”

Not when his game is flying high again.

Chase Young suspension officially two games – back for Penn State

Ohio State defensive end Chase Young will sit a total of two games, will be back for Penn State per a release from the University.

[jwplayer JcynzpXV]

Great news, Buckeye fans, Chase Young has been freed! We now know that his suspension for borrowing money from a family friend to fly his girlfriend to the Rose Bowl will be two games.

It was confirmed that Young did pay the entire loan back and that he was cooperative with the NCAA investigation, but rules are rules and so a two game suspension seems fair as the current set of rules are written.

With the NCAA looking to allow student athletes to be paid for their name and likeness, this may not be an issue in the future, but for now we can live with the best defensive player in the country missing Maryland and Rutgers. A rested Young will look to reign fire on Penn State and Michigan.

Of course, not everyone is happy about Chase Young only getting a two game suspension. Former Wolverine, Desmond Howard weighed in on the situation and lets just say, he’s not all that happy.

[jwplayer JcynzpXV]

Regardless of how you feel, Chase Young will be back for Penn State and beyond as the Buckeyes look to capture a Big Ten and National Championship.

Here is the statement and release from Ohio State.

The NCAA has concluded its review of The Ohio State University Department of Athletics’ reinstatement request for student-athlete Chase Young, and it has determined that Young should be withheld from playing in one additional game before being eligible to resume competition. Young was withheld from Ohio State’s Nov. 9 game against Maryland while the department looked into and reported a possible NCAA issue from 2018. Young will also miss Ohio State’s Nov. 16 game against Rutgers in Piscataway, N.J.

“I want to thank and express my sincere gratitude to university staff members who worked so diligently and expertly to learn and understand the facts, and then to report these facts to the NCAA as part of our request to have Chase reinstated,” Gene Smith, Ohio State Senior Vice President and Wolfe Foundation Endowed Athletics Director, said. “This is the example of the culture of compliance we have at Ohio State.

“I also want to commend Chase Young and let him know how proud we are of him. He took responsibility for his actions, cooperated throughout the process and understood and accepted that there would be consequences. He’s a team captain and a leader and most importantly, a Buckeye. He wanted nothing more than an opportunity to play again and we’re pleased that he’ll get that chance.”

Ohio State had requested immediate reinstatement on behalf of Young in its formal report to the NCAA.

“I appreciate the expediency to which the NCAA reviewed and responded to our request for reinstatement,” Smith said. “We felt that based on the circumstances, the NCAA would use its leadership capacity to take an understanding approach on behalf of all student-athletes who find themselves in a similar position, and it certainly did just that.”

The Georgia Bulldogs landed fourth in the latest College Football Playoff rankings. UGA checks in as the first one-loss team thanks to their big wins over Notre Dame and Florida. Behind the Bulldogs are in the order: Alabama, Oregon, Utah, Minnesota, Penn State, and Oklahoma.

This week the Dawgs take on twelfth ranked Auburn in what should be a defensive battle. Barring a collapse, Georgia is heading to the SEC Championship Game to play Joe Burrow and the LSU Tigers.

Following the release of the CFP Rankings, their were quite a few takes on who should be ranked where. Here’s some of the best ones:

This would be a nightmare scenario for the CFP Committee:

Thus scenario would be even worse if Ohio State lost to Penn State who went on to win the Big Ten.

Bowling Green (3-6) vs. Miami University (5-4) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

What’s Going To Happen

And now it’s all there for the taking for Miami.

Thanks to its win over Ohio last week, and with wins over Buffalo and Kent State, MU will be the 2019 MAC East champion with a win over a Bowling Green team that needs this to become bowl eligible.

And, by the way, as a cherry on top, the RedHawks can get to six wins and be bowl eligible with a win, too.

The Falcons were good enough to shock Toledo, and they won their free-space game last week against Akron, but they have to win out to get to six wins.

On a three-game winning streak, MU doesn’t do much of anything on offense, it doesn’t have a passing game, and it doesn’t do much to control the clock. So how is it winning? The defensive line lives behind the line and the secondary is great at locking down against mediocre offenses.

Bowling Green doesn’t do enough through the air to make MU worry, and the running game isn’t good enough to take over.

Miami was going to be cranked up before to win this game, and now that it has its goals available, it’ll play at another level – even if it’s not scintillating.

Bowling Green has been obliterated by a combined score of 215-17 in its four road games. Miami doesn’t have the offense to come up with a wipeout, but it’ll win easily.

‘It don’t have to be a close game’ if Michigan plays up to expectations vs. MSU

Why one Wolverine doesn’t think the margin between the rivals has to be a closer affair.

[jwplayer YALs1foR-XNcErKyb]

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — One of the biggest concerns before the 2019 season was how Michigan would play down the stretch, with a road game at Penn State preceding a rivalry game against Notre Dame. Then, the Wolverines would have to wait a few weeks to take on in-state rival Michigan State, a preseason Top 25 team.

All of this would need to be done while breaking in a new offense.

The early season growing pains on that side of the ball created a series of concerns, naturally, and though the maize and blue lost on the road to the Nittany Lions, that game was seen as a turning point for the Wolverines.

It was the week before when Michigan finally got its running game going, and it did it again against PSU and the top-ranked run defense, in terms of yards-per-carry allowed. It’s a credit to the offensive line and to the tailbacks who have really got things going up front.

But Saturday presents another challenge, as stopping the run is part of Michigan State’s modus operandi.

Michigan right guard Michael Onwenu acknowledges that the biggest thing for the maize and blue on Saturday is to play their game, or as he notes: ‘just sticking to the script.’ But also, having familiarity with some of the MSU players helps, he says.

“I think I know two of the D-linemen, and a few through the secondary,” Onwenu said. “Last year, it was a dogfight. And it doesn’t have to be that way.”

But what does he mean when he says it doesn’t have to be a dogfight?

Again, if Michigan plays its game, despite the Spartans coming to town with the nation’s No. 24 defense, then the Wolverines should cruise to victory.

Call it confidence, call it bravado — whatever you will. But with the way that Michigan has played as of late compared to the Spartans, coupled with an extra week to prepare due to the bye week, Onwenu is sure that the Wolverines can get their first home win over MSU since 2012.

“It don’t have to be a close game,” Onwenu said. “(If) we come out and play like we did the last few weeks.

“I think the bye week did fall on a good week for us. We’ve been playing well these last few weeks, and now we can play even better with a few days of rest.”

The battle for the Paul Bunyan Trophy is set to begin on Saturday at noon EST in Ann Arbor. The game will be broadcast nationally on FOX.

College Football Free Predictions, Previews from Winners & Whiners: Week 12

Week 12 college football predictions and previews from Winners & Whiners

[jwplayer PkCtjTd4-boEY74VG]

College Football Week 12 Free Predictions

We’re headed to Week 12 of the college football season! Last week, LSU beat Alabama on the road, Minnesota stayed unbeaten with a win over Penn State at home and Baylor needed three overtimes to beat TCU.  This week, No. 9 Oklahoma travels to No. 12 Baylor, No. 24 Navy is at No. 15 Notre Dame and No.6 Georgia is headed to No. 11 Auburn.

(note: These picks were made by our Editor and are subject to change. Check out WinnersandWhiners.com for a full analysis and update on each matchup)

*Oklahoma has now allowed 89 points in their last two games. That’s not a good sign, after edging Iowa State last week. But for some reason, they are a double-digit favorite against a Baylor squad, coming off a triple-overtime win over TCU last week. Baylor is not dominating teams at home, but they are finding ways to win. Unlike Oklahoma, they took apart Kansas State on the road. Take the Bears at home to cover.

*How good is Navy? They’ve won five straight before their bye last week and their only close game came against Tulane in three-point win. This game is all about stopping the run so Indiana, we have a problem. Notre Dame is allowing 157.3 yards per game on the ground and the Mids are leading the nation with 358.3 yards per contest. Malcolm Perry will be a handful and he’s throwing the ball occasionally. Notre Dame is trying to go to a New Year’s Day bowl and they could win, but they won’t cover the 9.5. Take the points and Navy.

*Another big SEC battle, this involving a Georgia team that has now won three straight games and has shut out two of those teams (Ky and Missouri). Auburn gave LSU their toughest game, falling by three and then came back to beat Ole Miss, 20-14. Neither team has been very explosive as of late. Bo Nix threw for 340 yards last week against Ole Miss. The freshman will have a much tougher test this wwk. But the Tigers are at home. This will be a tight one. Take the home dog (not Dawg).

Jorge Masvidal: Conor McGregor ‘hasn’t said a peep’ to me since I beat Nate Diaz

Jorge Masvidal says it’s been crickets from Conor McGregor since UFC 244.

[autotag]Jorge Masvidal[/autotag] isn’t going to beg anyone to fight him – he’s made that abundantly clear.

However, during a Tuesday appearance on the “Dan Le Batard Show,” Masvidal (35-13 MMA, 14-7 UFC) once again was asked about the possibility of fighting former UFC double champion [autotag]Conor McGregor[/autotag].

In Masvidal’s opinion, McGregor (21-4 MMA, 9-2 UFC) might not want the fight. Masvidal pointed out that before his UFC 244 victory against Nate Diaz, the Irishman was hyping up Diaz as if the Stockton, Calif., native was a sure thing to win the “BMF” title.

But Masvidal won the Nov. 2 showdown at Madison Square Garden. And since he defeated Diaz that night, Masvidal said he hasn’t heard a word from McGregor.

“To be quite frank, he was flirting with fighting the winner when the possibility of the winner was Nate,” Masvidal said. “And he kept throwing it out there. He even made his prediction he thought Nate would win. Since I’ve won, he hasn’t said a peep to address me or nothing.”

[lawrence-related id=461967,461089]

If McGregor never mentions Masvidal’s name again, “Gamebred” indicated he’d be OK with that. If McGregor does actually want the fight, though, Masvidal will oblige his request. Either way, Masvidal said the ball is fully in McGregor’s court.

“I’m not a bully, either,” Masvidal said. “I’m not going to be one of these cyber bullies. If you don’t want to fight, I don’t want to fight. If you want to fight, I’m licking my chops. Man, we’re going shopping. We’re going to do it big. You know what I’m saying? That dude don’t want it.”

Whether it’s McGregor or someone else, Masvidal voiced his desire for the biggest money fights available. Since his UFC 244 victory, he’s been called out by various prospective foes. Masvidal said he has plenty of options.

“We don’t know who’s next, but everyone is looking at cash symbols (and) cash money to us,” Masvidal said. “… But the next person is going to be the one who puts the most viewers in the bank account, whoever that is. A lot of people are saying my name now. They didn’t want to fight before, though.

“They didn’t want to fight me a year or two ago. … Everybody wants to call me out now, you know? It’s funny to me. These same guys didn’t want to fight me two or three years ago. I just want the one with the most money.”

Each Mountain West Team’s Opponents for Week Two

Contact/Follow @HardwoodTalk & @MWCwire

Take a look at each team’s opponents for this week and how they did last week.

We seek to take a look at each team’s opponents for the next week while also taking a look at their performance the previous week. These should be coming out on Sunday nights or Monday mornings going forward until the end of non-conference play depending on possible late night games on Sunday or not. And then traditional previews will take over since with conference play comes more familiarity with opponents.

Air Force Falcons

Tues, Nov. 12th

Army Black Knights:

Coach K’s alma mater is 1-1 on the season but that lone win comes against the US Merchant Marine Academy. That lone loss came at the hands of 10th ranked Villanova by 43 points. They are led by senior guard Tommy Funk who is averaging 13.0 PPG, 6.0 RPG and 4.5 APG. These military academy games mean a lot to these schools and I look forward to the Falcons taking the Black Knights on at home.

Boise State Broncos

Fri, Nov. 15th

California-Irvine Anteaters:

The Anteaters will face a familar face to Boise State fans in Life-Pacific on Tuesday. But after that they take on Boise State in The Taco Bell Arena on Friday. Irvine is 1-1 so far downing San Diego on opening night and losing to Pepperdine on Saturday by 3 points in Malibu. UC-Irvine is led by senior guard Evan Leonard who is averaging 19.0 PPG, 6.0 RPG and 2.0 APG through two games.

Colorado State Rams

Wed, Nov. 13th

Omaha Mavericks:

The Mavericks are 1-1 on the season but have not won against a division one team thus far. They are led by junior guard Ayo Akinwole who is averaging 16.5 PPG, 8.5 RPG and 7.0 APG through two games and has junior forward Matt Pile who is averaging a double-double (14.0 PPG and 12.0 RPG).

Sat, Nov. 16th

Loyola Marymount Lions:

Loyola Marymount is coming off of a close loss to Nevada in Reno on Saturday which put them at 1-1 on the season. Eli Scott was the guy on Saturday but the Lions are actually led by sophomore forward Ivan Alipiev who is leading the team with 19.0 PPG and 7.5 RPG.

Fresno State Bulldogs

Tues, Nov. 12th

San Diego Torreros:

San Diego is in a bit of a rebuild after losing a talented group of seniors last year. They are 0-2 on the season and are led by sophomore guard Joey Calcaterra, who is averaging 16.0 PPG in both losses.

Sun, Nov. 17th

California State University San Bernardino Coyotes:

The Bulldogs take on an undefeated Coyotes team who have two wins against division two opponents. They are led by senior guard Jeremy Smith who is averaging 26 PPG through week one.

Nevada Wolf Pack

Tues, Nov. 12th

Texas-Arlington Mavericks:

The Mavericks are off to a great 2-0 start including a 14 point win against Tulsa on Saturday. Watch out for senior forward Jabari Narcis who is averaging 11.5 PPG, 7.0 RPG and 2.0 BPG. If he has a big night in the paint, the Wolf Pack don’t have enough front court depth to keep him in check.

Sat, Nov. 16th

Southern California Trojans:

As Andy Enfield’s seat started to get a bit hot in Los Angeles he went out and got one of the best recruiting classes in the last decade for the Trojans and it’s paying off. His team is being led by his two five star freshman Isaiah Mobley and Onyeka Okongwu, and Big O is showing dominant play while averaging a double-double (20.0 PPG and 11.5 RPG).

New Mexico Lobos

Wed, Nov. 13th

Green Bay Phoenix:

The Phoenix are 1-1 on the season after a 51 point win against Wisconsin-Stout and a loss at Purdue. Watch out for freshman guard Amari Davis who averaged 12.5 PPG in last weeks action and junior guard PJ Pipes who is averaging 2.5 SPG.

What’s Going To Happen

It’s must-win time for an Ohio team that lost the game it couldn’t lose to Miami University last week. That put the Bobcats 1.5 games behind the RedHawks in the East, but it also means they had to do a lot more work to get bowl eligible.

They get relative layups at Bowling Green and Akron to close, but they’ll have to win them both to go bowling. They also want to try to win out to get a shot a the MAC title.

Western Michigan is bowl eligible, but it has to hold off Central Michigan, Ball State and Toledo in the West. The Broncos have won three of their last four, but they close out with this game and a trip to Northern Illinois. Win both of them, and they’re off to the MAC title game.

They’re great at keeping things moving offensively, and they have the pass rush and defensive front to give the Ohio ground game a slew of problems.

They also dominate the turnover margin, and Ohio doesn’t take the ball away. On the road, WMU has to be a +2.

However, the Bobcats are better at WMU on third downs, and the running game has kicked it in to other gear over the last few weeks. As good as the Bronco line is at getting into the backfield, it can be hammered. Ball State might have lost last week, but it ran for 261 yards and three scores.

Ohio will run for over 200 yards this week, and in the final home game of the season, it’ll pull off the win by controlling the game a bit more.
