Vanderbilt (0-1) vs Colorado State (0-1) Game Preview

Why Colorado State Will Win

Let’s just say Vanderbilt had a bad day.

The Commodores are just starting over under new head coach Clark Lea, and there’s obviously some rebuilding to do, but you don’t lose at home to East Tennessee State 23-3.

The Vanderbilt offensive line didn’t generate any sort of push for the running game, the three turnovers were a disaster, and there weren’t and big takeaways from the defense to make up for it.

For all of Colorado’s faults in its opener, the passing game clicked, TE Trey McBride caught 13 passes for 116 yards, and there were a whole lot of big plays – even if too many came late.

Week 2 College Football Expert Picks

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

Let’s just say Colorado State had a bad day.

South Dakota State is one of the best teams in the FCS, but an FBS program with this much experience shouldn’t be losing 42-23 at home. It’s not just that the Rams lost, it’s that the Jackrabbit offense wore them as a hat.

The SDSU offense was almost perfectly balanced, the Rams were -2 in turnover margin, and the game got way out of hand.

As bad as Vanderbilt was against East Tennessee State, QB Ken Seals had a few decent moments and the midrange passing game actually worked.

Week 1 NFL Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

So which team will get over its total disaster of a first week faster?

Don’t discount just how good South Dakota State is – it was actually favored to beat the Rams. This is a better Colorado State team than it showed, and Vanderbilt still needs way too much work on the lines.

Both teams will look a whole lot better, but that’s because they’re playing each other. Colorado State will show off more offense and a bit more pop.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Vanderbilt (0-0) vs East Tennessee State (0-0) Game Preview

Why East Tennessee State Will Win

The Bucs went 4-2 in the FCS spring season with a tough defense – especially against the run – and with enough of a pass rush to matter.

They might not have had the most explosive of offenses, but they were able run well enough to get by and come up with enough clutch plays in close games to have a good early season.

Now the D gets to deal with a Vanderbilt offense that struggled to score last year. putting up 17 points or fewer in seven games and averaged just 330 yards per game.

The ground attack had a hard time moving, and East Tennessee State has the returning part to continue to make it a struggle.

Week 1 College Football Schedule, Predictions

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

The Commodores should be able to throw the ball a bit. Ken Seals is a veteran passer – Mike Wright brings more mobility; he’ll see time, too – with a potentially dangerous receiving corps to work with. New offensive coordinator David Raih has NFL experience with passing games – this should get moving.

It won’t take a whole lot of points to get this done. East Tennessee State doesn’t score enough, it doesn’t move the chains, and it doesn’t have enough weapons for an SEC team to worry about.

Week 1 College Football Expert Picks

What’s Going To Happen

New Vandy head coach Clark Lea knows how to handle a defense. It’ll look great right away as it gets the parts in place against a Buc attack that won’t get down the field enough to create a scare.

East Tennessee State’s defense will make this a fight for a half, but the other side won’t provide any help to take advantage of any key opportunities.

2021 CFN SEC Preseason Rankings: East

1. Georgia Bulldogs

Quick Take: Georgia has recruited as well as anyone, it has the quarterback in JT Daniels, and the defense is as strong as any in America. There aren’t any real excuses – it’s all there to win the SEC Championship and potentially the national title.
Georgia Preview | Schedule

2. Florida Gators

Quick Take: The pressure will be off a bit after a phenomenal 2020 0 it should all be on Georgia in the East. It’s a stretch to call this a rebuilding year, but it’s asking a whole lot to get the passing game going like that again. The Gators are still more than good enough to shoot for at least another East title.
Florida Preview | Schedule

3. Kentucky Wildcats

Quick Take: It’s a rock-solid team that’s going to try to be a bit more explosive. The defense is sound, the running game will be good, and the coaching is top-drawer. Around a fantastic linebacking corps and great O line, the Cats will make some noise.
Kentucky Preview | Schedule

[lawrence-related id=532470]

4. Tennessee Volunteers

Quick Take: Josh Heupel has to get the offense going. As long as the Vols start to show more explosion and bring hope to the fan base, it’ll be a good year. There are enough good skill parts around a strong line to expect a quick improvement.
Tennessee Preview | Schedule

5. Missouri Tigers

Quick Take: After getting up to speed under Eliah Drinkwitz, now the Tigers are supposed to be far more consistent and efficient. The linebackers and D line will be the biggest plus, but the O needs to be more dangerous.
Missouri Preview | Schedule

6. South Carolina Gamecocks

Quick Take: Give it time. New head coach Shane Beamer should have a decent starting 22, and the team will be competitive, but it’s going to take a year to start building this all up. The defensive line and running game are good enough to beat the mediocre teams.
South Carolina Preview | Schedule

7. Vanderbilt Commodores

Quick Take: It’s going to be a long climb for new head coach Clark Lea. The receiving corps is good, and the secondary should grow into a plus. It’ll take something big to get an SEC win, but the Commodores miss most of the big boys from the West.

2021 Preseason CFN SEC Offensive Player of the Year

RB Kevin Harris, Jr. South Carolina

It was impossible to put together the SEC Top 30 Players list – it could’ve been a top 50 list and several great players would’ve been missing – and it’s just as nasty to try coming up with one signature preseason offensive star going into the season.

Texas A&M is loaded with weapons, Georgia will have its share of stars, and of course Alabama will replace the former all-time greats with new ones. For now, going into the season, Harris is the safe call – knowing that another Joe Burrow, or DeVonta Smith, or Mac Jones is right around the corner.

And there’s a chance Harris doesn’t even have to handle all the work with the expected return of MarShawn Lloyd from a knee injury. Even so, the 5-10, 225-pound Harris is a proven star for a team that needs as many reliable parts as it can get.

Harris ran for an SEC-best 114 rushing yards per game with 1,138 yards and 15 scores averaging over six yards per carry, and at least early on under Shane Beamer, he’s going to be the one to work the attack around.

2021 Preseason CFN SEC Defensive Player of the Year

CB Derek Stingley Jr., Soph. LSU

You’re going to probably need to go off of respect and sheer talent when it comes to acknowledging – arguably – the best player in college football this season. The future likely NFL Pro Bowl star might not have a whole lot to do with team after team staying away from him.

Blow off the stats – or the lack of them – going forward. He only made 27 tackles with five broken up passes and no picks last year, and that might be around what he does this season. The better passing teams will go at him once in a while – Eli Ricks is no picnic on the other side – but not often.

Vanderbilt Commodores College Football Preview 2021: Offense

– Step One: Score. Step Two: See Step One. The Commodores had a really, really, really hard time putting the biscuit in the basket, scoring 17 points or fewer in seven games and topping out with 35 in a loss to Ole Miss. Overall, the O averaged just 330 yards per game with no rushing attack and without enough of a passing game to make up for it.

Enter new offensive coordinator David Raih – an NFL assistant coach over the last several years who knows how to deal with wide receivers. He’s going to open things up for new head coach Clark Lea as the Commodores try getting more dangerous and more explosive right away.

The quarterback situation is fine. Ken Seals rose up as a freshman and showed off the passing upside to grow into the job, and fellow sophomore Mike Wright – who brings a bit more mobility – is getting a shot, too. But the passing game has to go from promising to more dangerous after averaging just 6.6 yards per throw.

Leading receiver Cam Johnson is back after making 56 catches for 545 yards and three scores, and 6-4 seniors Amir Abdur-Rahim and Chris Pierce add more deep threat pop. Throw in 28-catch TE Ben Bresnahan, and the veteran parts are there to work with.

The offensive front has some tweaking to do. The running game has to be better, but the pass protection wasn’t all that terrible. Three starters are back around veteran Tyler Steen at left tackle – most likely; there will be juggling done – but there isn’t a whole lot of massive bulk up front.

Leading rusher Keyon Henry-Brooks is in the transfer portal, but second-leading rusher Ja’Veon Marlow is back after running for 186 yards. In the mix as the likely No. 1 is Re’Mahn Davis, a 1,259-yard rusher for Temple who had a great freshman season but struggled to get going last year.

Florida (13-8) vs Vanderbilt (9-15) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

Florida has all of a sudden hit a bit of a wall.

The offense wasn’t that consistently great this year, but even though it’s shooting well, points have been a wee bit hard to come by – the team hasn’t hit 75 points in any of the last seven games.

On the other side, Vanderbilt has been able to fight through a rough run of three straight road games and an SEC Tournament first round win over Texas A&M to get here.

The Commodores got out to a good start and then held on by hitting their free throws. They got to the line 24 times and hit 14 more free throws in the 79-68 win. Florida commits a whole lot of fouls, but …

Why Florida Will Win

Vanderbilt is bad at guarding the three – the win over A&M aside – and Florida is the best in the SEC at hitting from the outside.

The Gators hit 44% from three and 52% from the field in the 78-71 win at the end of January, and nailed 62% from the field in a 91-72 blowout in late December.

Vanderbilt also can make its threes, but the Gators are great at coming up with stops, they clamp down hard from the outside, and they’re great at forcing mistakes.

What’s Going To Happen

Vanderbilt struggled with its consistency all year, but it’s got the pop to make this interesting if it start hitting from the outside early. However, Florida is too good at scoring in a variety of ways and should pick up the pace again after a sluggish few weeks.

Tennessee (15-6) vs Vanderbilt (6-12) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Tennessee Will Win

There wasn’t a problem the first time these two met with a 20-point Volunteer win in mid-January. Tennessee was terrific form the field, stopped the Commodores from doing much from the outside, and it didn’t have to deal with a whole lot of drama.

But few teams have had to deal with a lot of anything against Vandy, loser of ten of its last 12 games. It’s not an awful team, but it’s horribly inconsistent and it doesn’t give itself a whole lot of breaks – there aren’t enough rebounds or big defensive plays.

It’s the worst team in the SEC at stopping teams from the field, but …

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

You want to talk inconsistency, meet your 2021 Tennessee Volunteers after the 2021 kicked in.

The offense has this strange ability to go absolutely dead cold, especially from the outside. It couldn’t hit 30% from three against Kentucky, and lost. It couldn’t hit 30% from three against LSU, and lost.

It’s been able to win a few times over the last few weeks when it couldn’t get to the 30% mark from the outside, but if Vandy can just get out and bother the Vols shooters enough to screw up – is hasn’t allowed 31% from three in any of the last three games – it has a chance.

What’s Going To Happen

Jerry Stackhouse’s team will bring it at home with a great effort and enough pop to keep it close, but Tennessee has lost two of its last three and is coming off a total clunker against Kentucky.

It’s going to be motivated, and most importantly, it’s going to shoot well enough in the second half to get out with a win.

Alabama (17-5) vs Vanderbilt (6-11) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

The Commodores have to hit their threes. When they do that, they’re okay. When they don’t, forget it.

At least over the last few weeks, they were good from the outside against Mississippi State and South Carolina and won both games, and couldn’t do anything from three in the other games and lost.

They keep chucking them, and they make a lot because they’re usually in comeback mode, but if they can somehow slow things down and hope Bama is off after not playing for a week.

Why Alabama Will Win

Vanderbilt just doesn’t score enough.

The Crimson Tide keep on coming with an offense that was just getting sharper when the short time off came.

They’re amazing from three, they’re amazing at generating easy points off of steals, and they’re grabbling rebounds in bulk, especially on the defensive end.

Vanderbilt doesn’t have the consistent pop to hang in the 80s, and the defense has a big problem bothering outside shooters – that’s a deathblow when Bama  gets on a roll.

What’s Going To Happen

The Tide lost two of their previous five games coming into this, but they’ve been a rock at home with only a loss to WKU back in mid-December.

Vanderbilt, though, is just good enough to not get obliterated. They’re not going to be able to keep up in the second half, but they’ll score a bit late after Bama coasts across the finish line.
