Conference USA Preseason Predictions For Every Game: Preview 2022

Conference USA preseason predictions for every game, predicted order of finish, and lookahead to the 2022 season.

Just how much does it hurt Conference USA to lose Marshall, Old Dominion, and Southern Miss to the Sun Belt this season?

The league had to quickly scramble this offseason to change up its schedule, it’s having to do even more to keep the business going with Charlotte, FAU, North Texas, Rice, UAB and UTSA bolting in 2023 – Liberty, New Mexico State, Sam Houston and Jacksonville State will enter the fun – and all of that will likely be the main focus of the 2022 season.

And then UAB, UTSA and WKU should be the stars of the conference again.

Where’s the big surprise going to come from?

The problem is that too many schedules have too many tough non-conference games, but it should be entertaining as several teams will likely be fighting for bowl eligibility over the final few weeks.

Knowing there’s going to be a crazy outlier to screw this all up, here are the 2022 Conference USA preseason predictions.

UTEP Miners Preview 2022

It was one of the best stories of 2021.

UTEP, the program that hadn’t had a lick of luck for so many years and only went 5-27 in three seasons under head coach Dana Dimel was … good?

The seven-wins and bowl appearance was the best season since 2014, and the team won two more games in one year than it did over the previous four combined.

It hasn’t been easy to come up with any sort of success at UTEP, much less a sustained level of high play, but this year’s team is loaded with all-stars from 2021, it has depth, and now it knows what it’s like to win.

Unlike others in the conference who are off to the American Athletic Conference next year, UTEP is expected to stick around after this season, and it’s got a chance to establish itself as the star of the league going forward.

For now, just coming up with another winning season would be good enough.

UTEP Miners Preview 2022: Offense

The offense couldn’t move the chains, it couldn’t complete passes, and it turned the ball over WAY too much. However, for a program that struggled for a long, long time to get things going, averaging 392 yards and 25 points per game was great.

No, the passing accuracy wasn’t there, but the deep ball opened everything up and the running game wasn’t all that bad over the first half of the season. Seven starters are expected back, but …

Leading receiver Jacob Cowing is off to Arizona. He was a special target who averaged close to 20 yards per catch, and No. 2 receiver Justin Garrett is gone.

However, Tyrin Smith averaged over 17 yards per catch on his 33 grabs with four scores, TE Trent Thompson scored four times on his nine catches, and there’s help on the way from the JUCO ranks and with a few new receivers ready to rise up.

Gavin Hardison did his part to make the offense go. The junior threw for 3,223 yards and 18 touchdowns averaging nine yards per throw. Now he has to relax on the interceptions after throwing 13.

The offensive line is one of the best the program has had in years. Three Honorable Mention All-Conference USA blockers are back, starting with Andrew Meyer at center and with two good parts on the right side in guard Elijah Klein and tackle Jeremiah Byers.

The backs are there to do even more. Ronald Awatt led the team with 854 yards and six scores – averaging 5.4 yards per carry – and Deion Hankins is a good veteran who ran for 453 yards and six touchdowns. They’ll combine for over 1,300 yards again behind this line.

UTEP Miners Preview 2022: Defense

Where did that come from? The defense was solid against the run, allowed just 25 points per game, and finished second in Conference USA giving up 349 yards per game. With eight starters back and seven all-stars returning, the Miners should do it all again.

The 1-2 linebacking punch of Breon Hayward and Tyrice Knight combined for 210 tackles and should be the rock of the defense again. They’re the big, active 2 in the 4-2-5, and they should stay clean behind a big, experienced line.

Praise Amaewhule is among the best pass rushers in Conference USA with 5.5 sacks and 13 tackles for loss. He’s set on one side, leading sacker Jadrian Taylor is back on the other, and 300-pounders Kelton Moss and Keenan Stewart lock things up on the inside. this group will be even better against the run.

The transfer portal is helping out the secondary with Kobe Hylton coming in from Louisiana for one safety job and Josiah Allen a good JUCO transfer at corner. Dennis Barnes was third on the team with 59 tackles, and CB Corey Richardson led the team with eight broken up passes.

North Texas vs UTEP Game Preview

Why North Texas Will Win

Can North Texas keep it all going after winning five straight regular season game to close out 2021, including a 20-17 win over UTEP?

The quarterback room got stronger with more options to push Austin Aune, the running backs are there around a veteran offensive line, and the defense should be just good enough to hold up against a UTEP offense that’s not going to explode.

The Miners lost their star deep threat – Jacob Cowing is about to do big things for Arizona – for a passing game that wasn’t exactly razor sharp. On the other side, UNT might have its best linebacking corps in the Seth Littrell era and should hold up well against the run, but …

Week 0 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why UTEP Will Win

UTEP isn’t going to get fancy, but it should be effective.

It’s going to use its suddenly-strong offensive front to try pounding away. The running backs are deep and good, three all-stars return on the O line, and Gavin Hardison is a veteran quarterback who’ll keep pushing the ball deep – the UNT secondary is a bit of a question mark – even without Cowing.

The linebacking corps is great, Praise Amaewhule is one of the best pass rushers in the conference, and the secondary got a whole bunch of help from the transfer portal.

Week 0 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

This should be a relatively low-scoring battle – sort of like last year’s meeting – with the UTEP defense keeping the North Texas ground game that led Conference USA last season from going off.

The Mean Green were stuffed for under four yards per carry by the Miners last year and won, but they should be a wee bit better and the passing game will connect on the third down plays the other side won’t.

It might not be the most scintillating game, but it’ll be close and it’ll get interesting late.

It’s a new world for Conference USA with the loss of Marshall, Old Dominion, and Southern Miss over to the Sun Belt. There are still plenty of good teams still around, but the league is hanging on through the expansion process.

Can 2021’s star teams keep it all going? UTSA and WKU won’t be quite as good, UAB should be strong, and UTEP might just keep on stunning.

If Florida Atlantic can rise up after a down season, and if North Texas and Middle Tennessee can be bowl-worthy again, it should be a fun run.

The rankings are based on how good the teams should be and not the final projected records. Keeping in mind that this all could/might/will change when we make the final calls in August …

Bowl Game Reactions
– Boca Raton: WKU 59, App St 38
– Celebration, New Mexico, Independence to come

Boca Raton Bowl Reaction: WKU 59, Appalachian State 38

– Now THAT’S a bowl game. It started early, started fast, and it kept on rolling until Appalachian State punched itself out in the second half. 1,246 yards of total offense, 97 points, big play after big play. This was why we all do bowl season.

– Bailey Zappe was incredible. He threw for 422 yards and six scores with no picks, but he had a whole lot of help. Zappe was the signature star coming in from Houston Baptist – and he set the single season passing record and broke Joe Burrow’s touchdown pass record – but battery mate Jerreth Sterns had a whole lot to do with it, too. The star WR caught 13 passes for 184 yards and three scores.

– Appalachian State could never get control. For good and for mostly bad, it kept scoring too quickly. It needed to slow things down to a stop, but it got caught up in a firefight and couldn’t keep up. The running game did what it was supposed to do – 251 yards – but the team only had the ball for just over 31 minutes. The time of possession battle needed to be lopsided.

– No, WKU’s defense didn’t do a whole lot – it couldn’t tackle, it gave up over 600 yards, and it struggled – but the four turnovers made a difference. The pace of the game made Appalachian State press, and the mistakes followed.

Even in the best of times trying to bet on bowl games is tricky – teams get out of their respective regular season grooves. In 2020 it was impossible, and in 2021 it’s forget-about-it tough.

5. Coastal Carolina vs Northern Illinois: Tailgreeter Cure Bowl

LINE Coastal Carolina -11
ATS PICK Northern Illinois

How much do you believe that the regular season could carry over into the bowls? If you think that’s possible, then Northern Illinois shouldn’t have a problem covering this.

Those are a whole lot of points to be giving away to the champion of the MAC. Some might be freaked out by the late-season blowout loss to Western Michigan – NIU already had a spot in the MAC Championship wrapped up.

Northern Illinois is a badly flawed team in a whole lot of ways, and there’s reason to be concerned against an ultra-efficient, high-powered Coastal Carolina squad.

The Huskies don’t do much to pressure the backfield, they give up a whole lot of yards, and they don’t come up with enough takeaways or third down stops.

However, they’re great at dominating the time of possession, and they should be able to counteract what Coastal Carolina does by grinding and grinding some more.

The Chanticleers are more fun, more explosive, and more splashy on both sides of the ball, but they also struggled against mediocre team after mediocre team over the back half of the season.

The best win of the year was against … Kansas? Troy? You have as many wins over 2021 bowl teams as Coastal Carolina does.

That doesn’t mean the Sun Belt star can’t and won’t win this, and there’s a historical reason to think there could be a problem for Northern Illinois. The Huskies haven’t just lost their last six bowl games going back to the 2011 GoDaddy.com against Arkansas State; they’ve been annihilated in most of them.

This Northern Illinois is good at making teams play at its pace.

Now, if Toledo has problems in the Bahamas Bowl early on Friday and if Northern Illinois gets bombed on in this, avoid the MAC fast. But until that happens …

11 is a big number to be giving away here.

Fresno State vs UTEP PUBG Mobile New Mexico Bowl Preview

You want a bowl game with a team that’s going to care? UTEP hasn’t been to a bowl since 2014, and this is just its second winning season since 2005.

It’s been a wonderful breakthrough year for the program that’s used to being the free-space on everyone’s schedule. It didn’t exactly play a killer slate, but it managed to get through with a solid defense that was great at getting off the field – the Miners finished second in Conference USA in total D – and an offense that hit its deep shots down the field whenever it had the chance.

Fresno State just missed out on playing for the Mountain West title, it was good enough to beat UCLA and San Diego State, and it’s now going through a transition with head coach Kalen DeBoer off coaching the Washington Huskies and with Jeff Tedford coming aboard for next season. Running backs coach Lee Marks will take over the head coaching duties in this.

Fresno State QB Jake Haener was off with DeBoer to Washington, changed his mind, and now he’s back. The talent is there defensively – the Bulldog run defense allowed just 127 yards per game – it’s got a great offensive line and a strong running game, and the attack that led the conference in total yards is going to be dangerous.

UTEP vs UAB Game Preview

Why UTEP Will Win

UTEP got its groove back after a three-game losing stretch with Gavin Hardison and the passing game going off in the win over Rice.

The Miner offense hits a whole slew of big plays down the field, but it’s also able to control the clock thanks to a defense that’s great at getting off the field. This isn’t normal for the program.

One of the best stories of the year, UTEP is going bowling, it’s interesting, and it’s got a good enough team in place to win a game like this against a strong UAB team.

What’s Going To Happen

UAB might not win the Conference USA championship, but now it’s about jockeying for a good bowl position.

At home in the regular season finale – and on Senior Day – the Blazers will bounce back from the loss to UTSA and match UTEP big pass play for big pass play to go along with a terrific day on the ground.

UAB will be in control throughout.
