2020 Preseason CFN Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year

QB Chris Robison, Jr. Florida Atlantic
It’s going to be an interesting battle to be the top Conference USA offensive player.

Middle Tennessee’s Asher O’Hare will likely be the league’s biggest all-around statistical star quarterbacks, several running backs will be in the mix for the top honor, and the league is loaded with great receivers.

But watch out for the First Team All-Conference USA quarterback at Florida Atlantic to once again be special.

He completed 62% of his passes for over 3,700 yards with 28 touchdowns and six picks, and he ran for two scores as he led the Owls to the Conference USA title. Now he gets to help was in the transition to the Willie Taggart era.

2020 Preseason CFN Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year

DE DeAngelo Malone, Sr.
The 6-4, 230-pounder should again be among the nation’s best pass rushers, as well as Conference USA’s best defensive player.

Very experienced, very quick, and with a great closing ability, the NFL-caliber end might not be all that bulky, but he has no problem getting physical with 99 tackles last season with 11.5 sacks and 21 tackles for loss. He even returned a fumble for a score.

Expect him to once again be a devastating force behind the line.

5. College Football News Preview 2020: UTEP Miners Offense 3 Things To Know

– The offense only scored 235 points, was 116th in the nation in total yards per game, 119th in scoring O, and … it was the best showing by the attack in three years.

Baby steps.

The team could’ve really used an offseason full of practices to figure out the quarterback situation and finally settle in on one. Transfer Gavin Hardison saw time in two games last season, but he retained his sophomore status. He’s a 6-3, 205-pound passer, but he’ll have to fight off former JUCO transfer Isaiah Bravo and good-looking 6-5 mobile redshirt freshman TJ Goodwin.

– The top two receivers return, but more options have to emerge. Jacob Cowing is the deep threat – averaging close to 18 yards per game with a team-leading 550 yards on the season – and senior Justin Garrett is back after leading the way with 40 catches.

Coming in to add a little more pop is New Mexico transfer Q Drennan, who missed most of the last two seasons but was a big play threat – averaging 21 yards per catch – when over his first two yeas with the Lobos.

– Senior Quardraiz Wadley ran for a team-high 627 yards and seven scores in 2018, but he missed all of last year with a toe injury. He’s back, along with Deion Hankins, shifty senior Joshua Fields, and a slew of other backs for the rotation. The Miners will go with the hot hand behind a line that returns three starters and has the veteran options at tackle to hope for just a wee bit more production.

Can UTEP finally get another win? It’s been a rough eight-game run with a few tight battles, and no victories since beating Houston Baptist in the opener.

New Mexico State beat Incarnate Word for its first win of the season, but the offense hasn’t been consistent and the defense was getting hammered way too hard before dealing with the FCS team.

UTEP’s offense is miserable on third downs, there’s no pressure in the backfield, and it doesn’t have anything it can rely on offensively, but now it gets someone its own size.

New Mexico State dinks and dunks, UTEP takes more shots down the field, and when it comes to running games, it’s about dead even in mediocrity.

The biggest difference overall between these two bad teams? New Mexico State turns the ball over, and UTEP doesn’t.

This will come down to the mistakes, and the Aggies will make more of them.

UAB suffered a big setback with a 37-2 loss to Southern Miss last week. It has yet to be a team with any semblance of a pulse – also losing to WKU in Conference USA play – but there’s still time to win the West.

UTEP has been feisty, it pushed Charlotte in a 28-21 loss last week, and it’s shown a few sparks. However, its defense can’t come up with a decent stop – it’s dead last in the nation in third down defense – and it’s getting nothing out of its lines.

UAB really hasn’t beaten anyone. UTSA is the only team it has beaten with a win over another FBS team, and that win came against UTEP, Rice and Old Dominion, who all haven’t beaten another FBS team.

However at home there’s going to be just enough of a passing game to keep the chains moving in what should be a far more competitive game than the Blazers might like.
