Notre Dame vs Stanford Game Preview

Why Stanford Will Win

The Cardinal were so close to looking like they were finally about to turn the season around.

They had Oregon State in big trouble, it was over, and then a late rally with a miraculous final play ended in disaster for a 1-4 start with four straight Pac-12 defeats and no wins yet over an FBS team.

But they didn’t play all that poorly.

Scoring has been a fight and the running game sputtered against the Beavers, but the turnover problem from the first three games slowed down.

There aren’t any penalties – Stanford leads the nation in fewest sins – and the passing game is just efficient enough to push the Notre Dame D. However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Notre Dame Will Win

Again, the scoring for Stanford – it’s not there. It’s been a chore for the offense to close out drives with anything meaningful thanks to a line that allows way too many sacks and big plays.

But that’s not the real problem.

The defensive front has been a nightmare against the run allowing 5.6 yards per carry and an average of 211 yards per game. This is the wrong time to be dealing with the Irish.

The 0-2 start is well in the rearview mirror with three straight fun wins – in completely different ways – and it starts with a ground game that found something that works.

The running back combination of Auric Estime and Chris Tyree has been great, and QB Drew Pyne is red hot hitting 75% of his throws over the last three games with eight touchdown passes.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Stanford continues to be just good enough to lose tastefully.

It’ll hang around and score enough here and there to make the Irish keep fighting, but it won’t be able to come through in the second half after the run defense starts to struggle.

The Notre Dame win over BYU was the real corner-turner. Hanging on against Cal and beating North Carolina was nice, but BYU is a strong team that couldn’t handle what the Irish were able to do offensively as the game went on.

Stanford won’t be able to, either.

Oregon State vs Stanford Game Preview

Why Oregon State Will Win

You try to play USC and go to Utah and come away with something positive.

The Beavers came painfully close to getting by the Trojans in the 17-16 loss, and they got rocked by the Utes. They were able to move the ball relatively well in both games, and the defense wasn’t that bad in either defeat – neither team hit 200 yards rushing or receiving. So what was the problem?

Turnovers. The Beavers threw four picks in each loss. So how is that any sort of a positive?

Stanford is dead last in the nation in turnover margin. It has yet to recover a defensive fumble and it only has two interceptions to show for all the work.

As long as Oregon State doesn’t make a slew of mistakes it should be okay. That starts with an offensive line that’s among the best in the nation in pass protection, and Stanford isn’t great at getting into the backfield.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 5

Why Stanford Will Win

You try to play USC, Washington, and Oregon – the last two on the road – and come away with something positive.

The Cardinal might be 1-3, and they have yet to beat an FBS team, but they’re not playing all that poorly considering they dealt with three of the top 15, maybe ten, teams in college football.

The pass defense has been a tad rocky and there wasn’t any stopping the Oregon ground game with QB Bo Nix tearing off a huge dash, but the passing game has been okay, the penalties are non-existent, and life will be a whole lot better if the team can start to even out the turnover margin on a regular basis.

Oregon State doesn’t generate a pass rush and, again, it has its own turnover issues.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

It’s a late night game for most of the country, and it might not be between two of the big names going right now in the Pac-12.

Even with Oregon State starting QB Chance Nolan out, it’ll be worth staying up for.

Again, both teams had to deal with the stars on the slate and both won the games they were supposed to. Both can come into this expecting to get a strong win.

The Stanford defense is having problems – the takeaway issue really is a big deal – and the running game stalled over the last few weeks, but it should all pick up a bit this week.

The Oregon State offense is having problems, but as long as the interceptions chill out, it should be able to keep things moving.

Stanford has the better special teams, it’s playing at home, and it’s due for a solid win in a close, entertaining battle.

Oregon vs Stanford Game Preview

Why Stanford Will Win

It might be just this simple – can Stanford stop with all the turnovers?

The running game hasn’t been great – and it doesn’t help to lose leading rusher EJ Smith for the season – but Tanner McKee has been able to wing it around a bit and get the O moving.

Yards haven’t been the problem – the 12 turnovers in three games, though, hurt. However, Oregon hasn’t been great on third downs, it’s getting rocked for over 300 passing yards per game, and now it should be bombs away.

Yes, the secondary has had a whole slew of issues, but facing USC’s Caleb Williams and Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. had something to do with that.

And then there’s the giant question in this if Stanford gets moving …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Oregon Will Win

Is Bo Nix good now?

The former Auburn quarterback has been very much maligned over his career, and it didn’t help that his Oregon career started against the Georgia defense. However, since then he has been fantastic.

Against Eastern Washington, BYU, and Washington State he hit 75% of his throws for close to 1,000 yards and ten touchdowns with a pick. He settled in, the offensive line is giving him all the time he needs, and the offense has exploded from there.

The defense will be better – it has too much talent to continue to struggle so much – but now the team is used to shootouts. It should be just fine if Stanford gets going.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

The Cardinal will hang around for a little bit with a good balance and some big plays through the air, but Oregon will pull away.

Nix won’t be perfect, but he’ll hit his third down throws to keep everything moving. The defense will take care of the rest with three takeaways to overcome all the yards it allows.

Washington vs Stanford Game Preview

Why Stanford Will Win

The Cardinal running game worked against USC.

It ripped apart Colgate, but that was expected. Against the Trojan D it kept bashing away with 221 yards and three scores – the offensive line looked better than it had in years.

The pass rush was solid in the first two games, Tanner McKee is an accurate enough passer to take advantage of a Washington defense that’s going to concentrate on EJ Smith and the running game, and the overall parts are in place to grind.

The team has only played two games, but the penalties haven’t been there – just seven in the two games – the kicking game has been solid, and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Washington Will Win

Turnovers, turnovers, turnovers.

Stanford fumbled it away six times in the first two games and gave up nine turnovers in all. Washington’s defense isn’t doing enough to take the ball away over three weeks, but if it can get a few turnovers it might be lights out.

Caleb Williams and USC ended up throwing for close to 350 yards and four touchdowns against the Cardinal, and now it’s Michael Penix Jr’s turn.

The former Indiana Hoosier has been unstoppable with close to 1,100 passing yards and ten touchdowns with one pick in the first three games. The O is fourth in the nation in yards, sixth in scoring, and everything is operating in midseason form.

Week 4 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

The Husky win over Michigan State was almost perfect. It was a dominant performance, Penix Jr. continues to bomb away in Kalen DeBoer’s offense, and yet the team let up enough to get pushed this week to play a full four quarters.

Stanford won’t turn it over like it did in the first few games, and it’ll run just well enough to keep this from getting out of hand in the first half. However, Penix will be fantastic, the UW offense will be more balanced than it was against Michigan State, and the fantastic start will continue.
