Oregon vs Stanford Game Preview

Why Stanford Will Win

It might be just this simple – can Stanford stop with all the turnovers?

The running game hasn’t been great – and it doesn’t help to lose leading rusher EJ Smith for the season – but Tanner McKee has been able to wing it around a bit and get the O moving.

Yards haven’t been the problem – the 12 turnovers in three games, though, hurt. However, Oregon hasn’t been great on third downs, it’s getting rocked for over 300 passing yards per game, and now it should be bombs away.

Yes, the secondary has had a whole slew of issues, but facing USC’s Caleb Williams and Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. had something to do with that.

And then there’s the giant question in this if Stanford gets moving …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Oregon Will Win

Is Bo Nix good now?

The former Auburn quarterback has been very much maligned over his career, and it didn’t help that his Oregon career started against the Georgia defense. However, since then he has been fantastic.

Against Eastern Washington, BYU, and Washington State he hit 75% of his throws for close to 1,000 yards and ten touchdowns with a pick. He settled in, the offensive line is giving him all the time he needs, and the offense has exploded from there.

The defense will be better – it has too much talent to continue to struggle so much – but now the team is used to shootouts. It should be just fine if Stanford gets going.

What’s Going To Happen

The Cardinal will hang around for a little bit with a good balance and some big plays through the air, but Oregon will pull away.

Nix won’t be perfect, but he’ll hit his third down throws to keep everything moving. The defense will take care of the rest with three takeaways to overcome all the yards it allows.

Oregon vs Stanford Game Preview

Why Oregon Will Win

Can the offense continue to be consistently balanced?

It picked a great time to come up with its best running day of the season in the win over Ohio State, and there wasn’t a need to take a whole lot of big chances in the wins over Stony Brook and Arizona. It would’ve been nice to have played better against the Wildcats, but the Ducks were lousy and still managed to win 41-19.

Stanford is doing a lot of things right, but the run defense hasn’t been anything special, there aren’t enough defensive plays in the backfield, and Oregon should be able to take advantage of all of it.

The stats are a tad skewed after Arizona melted down late, but the Ducks lead the nation in takeaways with 13 overall and three or more in every game but the win over Ohio State. However …

Week 5 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Stanford Will Win

Stanford doesn’t have a turnover problem.

The defense hasn’t been able to generate a ton of takeaways – only three so far – but the offense hasn’t given the ball away in the last three games after turning it over twice against Kansas State.

For all of the good things Oregon does, the defense isn’t great on third downs and the pass defense hasn’t been a rock – even beyond the stat-skewing 484 yards against Ohio State.

Last week against UCLA was a stumble, but Tanner McKee continues to product with a season-high 293 yards and three touchdowns in the loss. He’s been good, he’s not making mistakes, and he’s just the type of quarterback who can pull this off if the defense can be a bit tighter.

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Can Oregon keep its focus and keep on winning?

It was able to get away with a loose performance against Arizona, but that’s not happening against Stanford – the Ducks have to be a whole lot sharper or else Mr. McKee will go off.

The Cardinal run defense won’t be good enough, and with no real pressure to keep Oregon QB Anthony Brown from relaxing and making the easy throws. It won’t be a breeze, but Brown will be effective enough to control the clock and the tempo.

Why Oregon Will Win

The team is still freakishly talented.

Justin Herbert might lighting it up for the Chargers, and several key parts might have opted out, but the running backs are outstanding, the receiving corps are dangerous, and Tyler Shough – assuming it’s him, considering Oregon hasn’t officially named a starter – is a big-time talent with the pro-style passing ability to keep it all going.

Stanford still has to prove the offense can get going, and the running game has to show it can work again after a disastrous 2019. The Cardinal only scored more than 27 points twice, and now it has to start things out against a defense that should once again be a killer at getting into the backfield.

Why Stanford Will Win

Walker Little might have opted out, but this is still going to be one of the best offensive lines in college football now that almost everyone is back and healthy.

The offense that sputtered so much has a terrific group of receivers for star QB Davis Mills to work around, and while it might not happen right away, the running game will be better. With Oregon defensive backs Thomas Graham, Jevon Holland and Brady Breeze all opting out, Mills needs to be sharp from the start.

Stanford lost some key parts to transfer and opt-outs, but Oregon took an even bigger hit with OT Penei Sewell along with all of those defensive backs. However …

What’s Going To Happen

Stanford really did take a big personnel hit. Maybe the talent lost wasn’t what Oregon is missing, but it’s still a big deal.

The Cardinal will be a whole lot better this season, and they’re going to be a legitimate problem in the Pac-12 North, but Oregon’s talent will shine through in the second half in what will be a somewhat surprising shootout.

Oregon (23-7) vs. Stanford (20-10) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Stanford Will Win

The Cardinal won 70-60 in the first meeting by doing a great job from the field, moving the ball around well, and blowing up in the second half with a big run.

This isn’t a great-shooting team, but it’s fantastic at stopping offenses from three – it leads the Pac-12 in three-point defense – and it’s strong at harassing everyone. Oregon leads the Pac-12 from three and was slowed down in the first meeting.

Offensively, the Cardinal don’t do a ton from three, but they hit just about everything.

Why Oregon Will Win

Stanford turns the ball over way too often, and Oregon is happy to provide the pressure to force the mistakes.

In the loss in the first game, it didn’t come up with enough turnovers and it didn’t hit enough from three – both were aberrations. It’s the best team in in the Pac-12 from the outside, and it can make things happen transition, too.

This isn’t a high-powered Stanford offense, so one big run should be enough at home to get by. The tables should be turned this time because …

What’s Going To Happen

Oregon will start hitting from outside early on, and it’ll generate the steals needed go on a scoring roll to have few problems.

The Cardinal might be playing well, but Oregon’s offense will be too good.
