Notre Dame vs Stanford Game Preview

Why Stanford Will Win

The Cardinal were so close to looking like they were finally about to turn the season around.

They had Oregon State in big trouble, it was over, and then a late rally with a miraculous final play ended in disaster for a 1-4 start with four straight Pac-12 defeats and no wins yet over an FBS team.

But they didn’t play all that poorly.

Scoring has been a fight and the running game sputtered against the Beavers, but the turnover problem from the first three games slowed down.

There aren’t any penalties – Stanford leads the nation in fewest sins – and the passing game is just efficient enough to push the Notre Dame D. However …

Why Notre Dame Will Win

Again, the scoring for Stanford – it’s not there. It’s been a chore for the offense to close out drives with anything meaningful thanks to a line that allows way too many sacks and big plays.

But that’s not the real problem.

The defensive front has been a nightmare against the run allowing 5.6 yards per carry and an average of 211 yards per game. This is the wrong time to be dealing with the Irish.

The 0-2 start is well in the rearview mirror with three straight fun wins – in completely different ways – and it starts with a ground game that found something that works.

The running back combination of Auric Estime and Chris Tyree has been great, and QB Drew Pyne is red hot hitting 75% of his throws over the last three games with eight touchdown passes.

What’s Going To Happen

Stanford continues to be just good enough to lose tastefully.

It’ll hang around and score enough here and there to make the Irish keep fighting, but it won’t be able to come through in the second half after the run defense starts to struggle.

The Notre Dame win over BYU was the real corner-turner. Hanging on against Cal and beating North Carolina was nice, but BYU is a strong team that couldn’t handle what the Irish were able to do offensively as the game went on.

Stanford won’t be able to, either.

Notre Dame vs Stanford Game Preview

Why Notre Dame Will Win

Stanford is awful.

How’s this for a season? It starts 3-2, it basically got Clay Helton first with a win over USC, it got to 2-1 in the Pac-12 with a thrilling win over Oregon, and then …

Nothing. Six straight losses, the offense scoring more than 14 just once, and with a shocking inability to do anything defensively. There aren’t any tackles for loss, big takeaways to turn games around, and the run defense just doesn’t work.

On the flip side, Notre Dame is humming.

It’s balanced, it’s ruthless, and it’s picking a wonderful time to play its best football of the year with a six-game winning streak, highlighted by the last three wins by a total of 117-9.

Get up early and Stanford won’t have anything in the arsenal to keep up.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why Stanford Will Win

It’s been a shocker of a season with the parts the Cardinal have in place, but there have been a few okay spots during this late losing streak.

The passing game has been okay at times. It’s the last game of year, so here come the big bombs to stretch things out and take a few chances.

The Irish offensive line still allows plenty of plays in the backfield, it’s not like the team has beaten anyone that great since the loss to Cincinnati, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Notre Dame will run for a bajillion yards if it wants to. Stanford’s defensive front has been a total disaster as the season has rolled on.

Offensively, the Cardinal went from two turnovers in the five five games to 15 in the last six – with two or more in every one of the six, but it’s the run defense that’s the real issue.

Stanford has allowed 200 or more rushing yards in nine of the 11 games. There are at least 250 more about to come from the Irish.

Why Notre Dame Will Win

Davis Mills has been fantastic, and it hasn’t mattered.

Stanford’s KJ Costello is an NFL starting quarterback talent, but he hasn’t been in one piece all season long. Mills was able to step in against Washington in early October and pull off the thriller, but Stanford has way too many problems now.

Mills threw for 504 yards against Washington State … and lost by 27.

He hit almost 75% of his throws for 290 yards against Cal last week … and lost.

Notre Dame’s secondary has gotten better and better as the season has gone on.

Forget the last two games against Navy and Boston College teams that don’t throw – they each threw for fewer than 80 yards – the Irish were able to keep everyone but Virginia’s Bryce Perkins and USC’s Kedon Slovis to under 190 yards.

The pass rush is good enough – even if it’s not consistent – and the rest of the defense has been dominant against mediocre.

Stanford’s offense is the working definition of mediocre with no ground game for the Irish to worry about.

It might be too late, but Notre Dame is playing as well right now as it has all season.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Stanford Will Win

Can controlling the clock matter if nothing else works quite right?

Stanford struggles in a whole slew of ways, but at least it’s doing it all slowly.

Notre Dame doesn’t seem to care about the time of possession battle, but as long as the Stanford defense isn’t allowing a slew of explosive plays, the game should be kept relatively low scoring in range for something quirky to happen.

The Cardinal defensive front is decent enough against the run to keep the Irish from busting out yards in chunks, and the secondary has generally avoided getting toasted by everyone who isn’t Washington State’s Anthony Gordon.

Stanford won’t beat itself, so win the turnover battle, capitalize on every opportunity, keep it close late and build up the overall confidence – like it did in the Washington game – and hope for Mills to go off.

What’s Going To Happen

Notre Dame is too sharp, too good, and playing too well right now.

Stanford’s offense isn’t doing enough, the Irish defense is stuffing everything, and even though it’ll be a low-scoring battle for a while.

The Cardinal offense will be stuffed time and again after keeping it close going into halftime, and then Ian Book and the Notre Dame passing game will open it up for an easy win.
