Sun Belt Preseason Predictions For Every Game: Preview 2022

Sun Belt predictions for every team and every game in the 2022 college football season

The Sun Belt just got a whole lot more interesting with the addition of Marshall, Old Dominion, and Southern Miss from Conference USA – and getting them a year before it seemed possible – and also brought in FCS powerhouse James Madison to a be a part of the fun.

The divisions are staying for now, but the great additions will make it far, far tougher for Appalachian State, Coastal Carolina, and Louisiana to keep on dominating – even though they might not take that big a step back, if any.

While it might seem a bit cut-and-dry with the way the league is set up, watch out for some potentially big moves from some teams that struggled. The problem will be the schedules for Troy, South Alabama, and Arkansas State. Georgia State and Old Dominion programs that got to bowl games last season will have to fight, too.

The Sun Belt is stronger than ever and the season should be the best yet. The Sun Belt predictions for 2022 are …

2022 Preseason CFN Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year

QB Grayson McCall, Jr. Coastal Carolina

The star in the emergence of Coastal Carolina football, McCall has been one of the nation’s most efficient and effective passers over the last two seasons hitting 71% of his throws for close to 5.400 yards with 53 touchdowns and six picks.

He’s able to run – 870 yards and 11 career touchdowns – hit the deep ball, and get the high-octane attack rolling at will. Coastal Carolina has some rebuilding to do, but McCall will make everyone around him better.

2022 Preseason CFN Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year

LB Carlton Martial, Sr. Troy

The newly configured Sun Belt is loaded with do-it-all linebackers, but no one does-it-all more more than Martial. He’s not all that big, but the 5-9, 210-pound flash gets all over the field as a bit of a hybrid playmaker.

Going into his fifth season, he already has 443 tackles, ten sacks, 47.5 tackles for loss, and five picks with seven forced fumbles on the resumé.

Southern Miss Golden Eagles Preview 2022

It’s not like the program hasn’t been through weird lulls before.

For years, Southern Miss was a rock-solid Conference USA power that went to bowl games every year, enjoyed winning seasons as the norm, and even made a few pushes for the conference championship, winning it in 2011.

Then came the disastrous 1-23 run followed up with a 3-9 2014, and then everything bounced back with a trip to the 2015 Conference USA title game and everything returned to normal.

And then came the loss to South Alabama to open the 2020 season, the coaching changes followed soon after, and all of a sudden the team was on a bad run going 2-19 against FBS teams.

The 2021 version couldn’t move the offense, the defense couldn’t carry the entire load, and it got ugly – the O didn’t hit 20 points against an FBS program until November 19th.

But head coach Will Hall managed to pull off two late wins, and now he’s got that momentum, a new conference with the move to the Sun Belt, and one of the league’s most experienced teams with a loaded defense and – if nothing else – a ton of depth, transfers, and experience on offense.

Again, it’s happened before, and it wouldn’t be shocking if there’s a big boost this year. This team might just be good enough to go from miserable to contender in a snap.

Southern Miss Golden Eagles Preview 2022: Offense

There’s a whole lot of experience returning, but the offense that was dead last in the nation in tackles for loss allowed, and dead last in turnovers, and among the worst in the country in third downs and, oh yeah, scoring, could still uses some work. The Golden Eagles averaged just 266 yards and 18 points per game, but …

The offensive line got a whole lot off work this offseason. It’s a veteran group with depth after bringing in a slew of big bodies through the transfer portal. It also is undergoing a change in coaching with Sam Gregg a good get from Liberty to make this group go. Now he has to find the right combination to get someone blocked.

The running backs are in placed to go. Frank Gore Jr. is the main man after running for 801 yards and five scores, and Mississippi State transfer Janari Dean is pushing his way into playing time in a rotation with second-leading rusher Dajon Ricard.

The quarterbacks have to survive behind the line that kept getting them popped. Six different Golden Eagles threw at least 11 passes last year, and now it’ll likely be Ty Keyes after a strong offseason, but this is hardly a settled gig with five other options still in the hunt.

The receiving corps is one of the team’s biggest strengths thanks to top target Jason Brownlee coming off a 46-catch, eight touchdown season. He’s good, Jakarius Gaston is a big target who can stretch the field, and like everyone else on this team but quarterback, the transfer portal is bringing in some help.

Southern Miss Golden Eagles Preview 2022: Defense

The defense was a plus considering the offense didn’t bring a whole lot of help. There wasn’t a pass rush, but the run defense wasn’t bad and the pass D was the best in Conference USA. That’s a tad misleading – the teams on the slate that could through had few problems doing it – but …

This really is a good, deep secondary full of options. The D only came up with 11 picks – a lot came late in the year – but Natrone Brooks is a solid corner and leading tackler Malik Shorts should be one of the most productive safeties in the Sun Belt.

Now they need help from more of a pass rush. Hello transfer portal.

Josh Carr earned all-star honors as an edge rusher after leading the team with 4.5 sacks and nine tackles for loss, but this line will be all about the JUCO transfers and guys from Mississippi State and Ole Miss to help boost the rotation on the defensive front.

Jalen Williams is a huge tackle from Arkansas, Armandous Cooley was a nice 6-2, 305-pound tackle get from Mississippi State, and Quentin Bivens from Ole Miss should play a role inside.

The linebacking corps has its hitters. Hayes Maples has been one of the team’s leading tacklers for a few years, and Santrell Latham and Swayze Bozeman can get all over the field. 234-pound TQ Newsome is one of the team’s bigger linebacking options working behind Maples.

The Sun Belt just got a whole lot bigger, cooler, and more interesting with a shocking expansion that should take the conference up another level.

FCS powerhouse James Madison gets to join in right away, and Marshall, Old Dominion, and Southern Miss were able to leave Conference USA and get in for the 2022 football season.

Here’s the problem – several Sun Belt programs that made strides last year are going to have tougher schedules to deal with. Several teams should be better, but might not have the results to show it.

The rankings are based on how good the teams should be and not the final projected records. Keeping in mind that this all could/might/will change when we make the final calls in August …

The conference has only been doing football since 2001, and it was always the land of the paycheck programs – the ones the big boys scheduled for an easy 55-3 win on Homecoming.

In one of the shockers of the conference realignment changes over the last year, the Sun Belt wasn’t picked off in the expansion run. Instead, it added James Madison from the FCS and snagged Marshall, Southern Miss, and Old Dominion from Conference USA.

It was a battle to see if Conference USA could hold on to the Thundering Herd, the Golden Eagles, and the Monarchs through the football season, but the divorce is final, and those three are getting remarried right away to go along with a fun James Madison program.

How ugly did it get? Both Conference USA and the Sun Belt released their 2022 schedules including those three teams, but the Sun Belt has their teams.

The Sun Belt East will be made up of Appalachian State, Coastal Carolina, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, James Madison, Marshall, and Old Dominion. The West will be Arkansas State, Louisiana, South Alabama, Southern Miss, Texas State, Troy, and ULM.

No, it’s not time for the SEC to start shaking, but it’s an amazing story that the Sun Belt is not only surviving, but it’s getting a whole lot stronger and more entertaining.

Southern Miss vs FIU Game Preview

Why FIU Will Win

Southern Miss is one of the few teams that has a harder time moving the chains than FIU does.

The Golden Eagles pulled off a win over Louisiana Tech for the first victory of the year over an FCS team, but the five takeaways had a whole lot to do with that.

The USM offensive front has a nightmare of a time keeping teams out of the backfield, the offense is the second-worst in America averaging just 250 yards a game, and turnover as a huge issue.

The O has given it up 28 times on the year – the second most in America – with 13 in the last four games. But …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why Southern Miss Will Win

Southern Miss is taking the ball away.

The defense hasn’t been bad overall. It’s okay against the run, it’s second in Conference USA against the pass, and considering there’s little to no pass rush, it’s not the problem.

Again, the five takeaways against Louisiana Tech were the difference in the win last week, and the D has 12 takeaways in the last four games.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

What’s Going To Happen

FIU doesn’t do anything to generate takeaways.

Even with a good passing game that hits a slew of shots down the field, the Golden Panthers have been obliterated in each of the last four games and haven’t come within 11 points of anyone since the 31-27 loss at Central Michigan.

The woeful and painfully disappointing FIU season comes to a merciful end.

Southern Miss vs Louisiana Tech Game Preview

Why Southern Miss Will Win

Can Southern Miss finally get any offense going?

It has a nightmare of a time on third downs, no one gives up more plays in the backfield, and it’s the worst attack in the nation overall, averaging just 246 yards per game whether they need them or not.

However, Louisiana Tech’s defense will give up yards.

UAB ran all over the Bulldogs, Charlotte threw for 448, and overall the defense is among the worst in the country. Part of the reason will mean a huge break for the Southern Miss O line …

Louisiana Tech struggles to get into the backfield.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Louisiana Tech Will Win

Oh yeah, again, Southern Miss has the worst offense in college football, and it’s not getting any better.

It hasn’t hit 260 yards in any of the last five games, the passing attack isn’t doing anything down the field, and worst of all there are lots and lots and lots of turnovers.

The Golden Eagles have to press, and that leads to a whole slew of problems. They’ve given the ball away 17 times in the last six games.

Louisiana Tech’s defense might be awful, but it’s happy to take the ball away.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

It’s been a rough, rough year for both teams.

They’ve both been wildly disappointing, and they’re both going to end up with a losing campaign, but Southern Miss really, really can’t get the offense going.

Even with QB Austin Kendall out with a back injury last week, Aaron Allen was able to stop in and throw for 324 yards. The team will find offensive production from somewhere, Southern Miss won’t.

The Golden Eagle defense has to come up with a slew of takeaways and it needs to keep holding up against the pass. The D is good at holding up in the red zone – it’s not letting games get too out of hand – and it should be able to get off the field just enough to give the O a few chances.

But …

Why UTSA Will Win

The Southern Miss offense isn’t doing much of anything, and now the defense is wearing down.

Good for the first part of the year against the run, now the Golden Eagles are getting ripped to shreds, allowing 200 yards or more in two of the last three games with 321 yards allowed in the loss to North Texas last week.

UTSA’s offense is a machine. It’s not giving up the big turnovers, the running game has been consistent, and Southern Miss – thanks to an offensive line that’s having a nightmare of a time keeping defenses out of the backfield – isn’t going to be able to keep up.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

Southern Miss has the nation’s worst scoring offense averaging fewer than 14 points per game. UTSA should have that after two drives as it gets one step closer to taking the West title. If it wins and if UAB loses to Marshall, it’s off to the Conference USA championship.

North Texas vs Southern Miss Game Preview

Why North Texas Will Win

Look at North Texas rising up and coming up with something big.

Rice shocked UAB, and just as it seemed like the program was about to make a nice step forward, the Mean Green – for them – pitched a relative defensive gem with a 30-24 win.

There’s good pressure coming from the front, and now it gets to go against a Southern Miss offense that’s an absolute disaster.

The Golden Eagles haven’t come close to running for 100 yards in any of the last six games, they’re dead last in the nation in scoring, they’re among the worst in the nation at keeping defenses out of the backfield, and North Texas might look like the 1985 Bears against this bunch.

Why Southern Miss Will Win

It’s not like the North Texas is all that great.

It didn’t dominate Rice, but it was good enough to get the win. Overall, it can be thrown on without too much of a problem. It’s giving up 8.5 yards per throw, it’s only picked off four passes – just one in the last seven games, and Southern Miss has to take advantage of all of it.

There might not be a whole lot happening on the ground for the Golden Eagles, but throw, throw, throw some more, and …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

The defense should be able to get off the field.

There might be a ton of problems on both sides of the ball, but Southern Miss is great at third down defense and overall it’s not getting gouged in any one way. This is the week the defense rises up to overcome the miserable offense.

It’s not going to be anything beautiful, but at home in a turnover-filled game, the USM fans will take it.
