2022 ATH from heart of Buckeye country raves about Michigan visit

The Columbus-area athlete shares why his Ann Arbor visit exceeded expectations while breaking down his recruitment.

[jwplayer zIOB0Yi1-XNcErKyb]

When you grow up 20 minutes from Ohio State, you’re bound to be a Buckeyes fan, just like Kaden Saunders.

Yet, the 2022 Westerville (OH) South athlete found himself in Ann Arbor at the first possible opportunity, the day the recruiting dead period ended, learning more about what the maize and blue and Michigan has to offer.

Originally offered back in Sept. 2019, Saunders was shocked by the visit, not anticipating how great things would go for him and his father — who accompanied him on the trip — when they got to Schembechler Hall.

“It went really well,” Saunders told WolverinesWire. “I wasn’t expecting a lot of the stuff that happened today. Coach Roundtree showed me, my dad and I, around the whole day. And we were really impressed by him and all the coaches that we talked to.

“I sat in a meeting with Coach Gattis and he went over some football stuff. Watched some film. I like the way he coaches. He goes over all the minor details and elevates all his players’ games off those minor details that he critiques and emphasizes in the way he coaches.

“At lunch, I talked to Coach Harbaugh. He sat with my dad and I. We talked about my background, his background, family. Just overall, it was a great visit.”

[lawrence-related id=21957]

Listed by the recruiting services as an athlete, Michigan is wooing Saunders at wide receiver, hence he spent his time with grad assistant and former Wolverine Roy Roundtree and offensive coordinator Josh Gattis.

To him, the biggest thing that made this visit such a roaring success was the bond that he formed with the duo.

“How I bonded with Coach Roundtree and Coach Gattis — like off the bat we connected,” Saunders said. “It was easy to make conversation with them. It was just easy to connect. All the other coaches as well, they welcomed me. Made me feel wanted.”

For a recruit going into his junior year, Saunders has a clear view of what he wants at the next level.

He isn’t just looking for a family atmosphere or a place that feels like home — though both are a part of it.

For him, given his upbringing, he’s looking for an institution that’s strong academically, that can prepare him for life beyond football, and a staff that will mold him into the man he wants to become.

“Obviously academics, because that’s the main thing with my family,” Saunders said. “My mom’s a teacher. So academics – and Michigan meets that standard, obviously. The atmosphere inside the program. Do they take care of the players on and off the field? Life after football, like what does a degree mean from that university? Am I gonna be able to get a good job? That’s pretty much it. Am I gonna excel on the field, too? Am I gonna get a chance to maximize my potential at the university that I choose? That plays a role.”

[lawrence-related id=21936]

From an academics standpoint, Saunders also already knows two areas he’s strongly considering — again, already ahead of the curve on that front.

And given his interests, Michigan is well-aligned for him, given that it has both the Ross School of Business and a strong kinesiology program.

“My top two choices right now are probably business or sports medicine,” Saunders said. “I just like the idea of being a physical therapist. It’s just interesting to me. I’ve torn my hamstring before and just the whole process of rehab and working with my physical therapist, it just interested me in how much they knew about the body.”

As of now, Saunders has 11 reported offers, and though he’s hearing from the Buckeyes, he doesn’t have an offer from the home school.

With schools such as Michigan, Penn State and Notre Dame surging in his recruitment, they all already have a leg up on the Buckeyes, given that they’re recruiting him at his preferred position, whereas OSU is not.

“Ohio State is recruiting me as a DB – they’re the only school that’s recruiting me not on the offensive side of the ball,” Saunders said. “But my heart is on the offensive side of the ball. That’s what I’m gonna do in college.”

Though the onus is now on the 2021 class, as those players are going into their senior years, Saunders has no intentions of drawing out his recruitment until he’s on the clock.

Instead, he says, he wants to get a chance to work with his top schools during camps this summer, and then make his choice as soon as this fall as to where he’ll attend.

“Probably this summer I’ll cut down my list, focus on ten schools, maybe five,” Saunders said. “This summer, I’m gonna try to choose schools I’m most interested in and get to those camps if possible to work with some of those coaches. See how I like being coached by them, stuff like that. And then, junior year sometime, I think I’ll commit sometime junior year.”

Georgia Bulldogs in four star WR Agiye Hall’s top four

The Georgia Bulldogs and two other SEC schools have made the top four of four-star IMG Academy wide receiver Agiye Hall.

The Georgia Bulldogs have made the top four of Agiye Hall. Hall is a four-star prospect who plays high school football at IMG Academy. Hall has good size at 6’3″ and is committing on March 14th.

Agiye Hall is a member of the class of 2021 and plays wide receiver. Will he choose UGA?

Hall announced his top four schools: Georgia, Arizona State, LSU, and Alabama via Twitter:

Hall practices and trains at an elite high school football program in IMG Academy. His announcement is on the horizon. Hall is a good route runner. Look at this route to demonstrate his skill-set:

Hall doesn’t tip his route very much and gains lots of separation in this case. He’d be a great commitment for Kirby Smart and Georgia, which is still building the class of 2021.

Top 2021 OT target breaks down Michigan visit

One of the top offensive tackle target for the Wolverines in the 2021 class breaks down his visit to Ann Arbor.

[jwplayer zIOB0Yi1-XNcErKyb]

The recruiting dead period is officially over, and Michigan took advantage, hosting a litany of 2021 and 2022 targets in Ann Arbor, working towards wooing multiple prospects towards the possibility of becoming a Wolverine.

Among the top names on campus on Sunday included 2021 Chicago (IL) Marist three-star offensive tackle Pat Coogan, a player the maize and blue offered on Jan. 23, but have been in hot pursuit of since OL coach Ed Warinner extended him the scholarship opportunity.

Since there was little time between his offer date and the start of the recruiting dead period in February, Coogan had to wait a little over a month to make the trek to campus, but he did so at the first possible opportunity.

And Michigan did not disappoint.

“It was an awesome day, really. I really enjoyed myself,” Coogan told WolverinesWire. “My parents really enjoyed it as well. Just to sit down with Coach Warinner and some of his personnel, it was really awesome. We broke down some film with him. To see how he coaches a little bit was really cool.

“To see Coach Harbaugh – he gave a little spiel to everyone, so that was super cool as well. Just to get on campus and meet everyone. It was just awesome.”

[lawrence-related id=21940]

On the trip, Coogan spent most of his time with Warinner, who spent 30 minutes getting to know him and his family over lunch.

He can feel that Michigan is particularly making him a priority, which is why he picked Ann Arbor as his first visit — though admittedly, aside from Michigan — Stanford, Duke, Ohio State and Illinois are all in hot pursuit as well.

But he feels the particular excitement about his game from Warinner, which is why he chose to come visit Schembechler Hall first.

“I would say because Coach Warinner offered me in early January, and right off the bat he really wanted to get me to campus,” Coogan said. “Even went, the day he offered me, he came to my school. He really wanted me to get to campus and have me check it out for myself. So, right off the bat, I wanted to get down there. With it being close to home, I knew it was a pretty easy trip. And having the tradition of great football there, I knew I really wanted to check it out.”

Academics are quite high up on Coogan’s priorities list, if it wasn’t obvious from the bulk of schools chasing after him. He isn’t set on his eventual major yet, but he’s looking at either a performance dietary (nutrition) field or sports marketing at the next level.

But, what else is he looking for?

What he states is quite familiar to Michigan fans who follow recruiting — he’s looking for a place that feels like home.

“Definitely just a great relationship with everyone that’s a part of that program, a part of that university,” Coogan said. “Obviously a great academic degree like what was previously stated. But just a great relationship with the coaches, other players, the professors, the athletic trainers – all the personnel that go into playing a role into my career. The comfortability level I feel in the university and having that place be my second home and a home away from home is clearly what I’m looking for. Great football, competitive football to succeed and strive to win championships.”

Coogan grew up a Notre Dame fan, but now that he’s in the thick of his recruitment, he says that the Fighting Irish aren’t necessarily the favorites, should they get involved.

For now, he’s going to enjoy the process, but expects to make a decision before his senior season — if all goes to plan, of course.

“I would say I’m shooting for a decision to be made in the summer,” Coogan said. “I’d say that would be a good timetable to put that for myself. But I’m obviously not gonna force anything. I’m gonna let everything play out by itself. I’m not gonna force anything. But I think before my senior season would be a good projection.”

Coogan is rated by the 247Sports Composite as the 436th-best prospect in the 2021 class and the 14th-rated player in the state of Illinois.

UT football signee Keshawn Lawrence closes high school hoops career

Keshawn Lawrence closes high school hoops career.

KNOXVILLE — A University of Tennessee football signee played his final career high school basketball game Saturday night and he impressed one of Knoxville’s top high school basketball coaches.

Ensworth High School senior guard Keshawn Lawrence scored seven points in the Tigers’ season-ending 66-58 loss to Knoxville Catholic High School Saturday night in the State VIII round of the Division II-AA Playoffs.

Lawrence, a 6-foot-2, 202-pound safety on the Ensworth football team, which reached the Division II-AAA State Quarterfinals before being eliminated by eventual state champion Chattanooga McCallie, had offers from LSU, Miami (Fla.), Oklahoma and Alabama.

He signed with the Volunteers in December and is a four-star prospect on the gridiron, but Knoxville Catholic basketball coach Mike Hutchens, who has three Division I prospects on his own team, including sophomores B.J. Edwards (point guard) and Handje Tamba (power forward/center) and senior Akeem Odusipe (a center who recently visited Rhode Island), was impressed by Lawrence’s skills on the hardwood.

“Lawrence is committed to play football for Tennessee,” Hutchens said. “But he was a great basketball player before he signed to play football here.

“Ensworth is a great team and you had four or five Division I [basketball] players out there.”

Texas offers 2021 three-star safety

The Texas Longhorns have offered 2021 three-star safety out of Austin LBJ, Andrew Mukuba. He is the 18th ranked safety in the nation.

The Texas Longhorns have made an offer to 2021 three-star safety Andrew Mukuba. He currently plays at Lyndon B. Johnson High School in Austin, Texas. While his composite ranking has him as a three-star, 247 rankings have Mukuba as a four-star prospect.

Mukuba is the 18th ranked safety in the 2021 class and the 51st ranked prospect in the state of Texas. His crystal ball shows Mukuba at 100 percent to Arkansas. Other Big 12 schools in the mix for his commitment are Texas Tech, Texas Christian and Kansas. The Texas offer is his 22nd overall.

Georgia football among four-star DE Keeshawn Silver’s top seven schools

Projected to commit in-state, Silver has a long list of scholarship offers, including UGA rivals Florida, Auburn, Georgia Tech, and Alabama.

Four-star defensive end Keeshawn Silver took to twitter to narrow down his preferred collegiate destinations.

A rising senior out of Rocky Mount, North Carolina, Silver is the state’s top defensive end and fifth-ranked prospect overall. According to the recruiting analysts at 247.com, he is the eighth-best strongside defensive end of 2021’s recruiting class.

Currently projected to commit to in-state UNC, Silver has a long list of scholarship offers, including Georgia rivals Florida, Auburn, Georgia Tech, and Alabama.

Of that list, only Florida, Auburn, and Alabama made the cut. Sorry Jackets, but it’s not exactly surprising.

Silver, who began his high school athletic career primarily as a basketball player, has a high ceiling given that his talent and his new venture’s novelty.

He has not scheduled a commitment date.
