Rice vs McNeese Game Preview

Why McNeese Will Win

The Cowboys might have lost to Montana State 40-17, but they’re going to bring the pass rush, they’re not going to make a slew of mistakes, and they’re getting a Rice team that got beaten up in a 66-14 loss to USC.

McNeese didn’t quite play like itself against the Bobcats with two turnovers, too many struggles on third downs, and nothing happening against the run. As the season goes on, the run D will be solid, and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Rice Will Win

Rice played USC. That’s not going to be an outlier against that team.

The Owls were quickly outclassed, three pick-sixes were killers, and it got ugly.

There’s more of an offense than the one that showed up in LA, and it’s about to show why against a Cowboy D that didn’t do anything against Montana State. The ground game might sputter a little bit – McNeese really will be okay against the run this year – but the secondary will give up too many yards.

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Rice has the receiving corps to give McNeese problems right away, and then the ball control will kick in.

It’s not exactly going to be the reverse of the USC game, but Rice will get to open it up a little bit late.

USC vs Rice Game Preview

Why Rice Will Win

The Owls know how to grind down the clock.

They were among the best in the nation last season in time of possession, the running game has just enough returning to at least try pounding a little bit against a USC defensive front that has to prove that it’s stronger, and the receiving corps will be a sneaky-good strength early on.

If QB Wiley Green can get enough time to work, he should be able to test the Trojan secondary downs he field and spread it around a bit.

On the other side, the Rice defense is as deep as it has been in several years, it was decent at forcing takeaways, and …

Week 1 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why USC Will Win

Here we go.

The skill parts are tremendous, the talent level has been raised up several notches from the transfer portal, and Lincoln Riley was a massive upgrade for a program overdue for a next-level head coach.

Yeah, Rice will probably win the time of possession battle by ten minutes, but USC will go fast, fast, fast. It’ll want to make a big splash right away, it should be able to operate with good balance, and the other side will want to make a huge statement.

The underappreciated part of the puzzle should fit right away. Former Oklahoma defensive coordinator Alex Grinch should work wonders with the D line right away against a Rice offensive line that has to be far stronger.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Saturday

What’s Going To Happen

You wanted the show, you got the show.

USC will start fast, get up without a problem, and then the story will be a defense that will try proving that 2021 was just a blip. Rice will generate a few scores, but it won’t have a prayer of keeping up.

2022 Preseason CFN Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year

QB Frank Harris, Sr. UTSA

Last year it was RB Sincere McCormick – along with a solid defense – that took over on way to the Conference USA title and a breakthrough season for the UTSA program. The quarterback was pretty good, too.

The 6-0, 200-pound lefty was the main man leading the way, and now this is his team more than ever after two terrific seasons. Harris has connected on 66% of his career passes, kept the interceptions down with six in each of the last two years, and in 2021 he started hitting his deep throws a bit more. Combine all of that with over 1,200 rushing yards and 15 scores, and this might be his league, too.

2022 Preseason CFN Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year

LB KD Davis, Sr. North Texas

The 6-0, 229-pounder isn’t huge, and he might not have the build of a normal middle linebacker, but he’s got great range and he makes a whole lot of tackles.

The 2021 First Team and 2020 Honorable Mention All-Conference USA honoree made 284 tackles – leading Conference USA with 121 stops – with 11 sacks and 28 tackles for loss over the last three seasons for a team not known for its defense. In his fifth year, expect him to be even more disruptive.

Conference USA Preseason Predictions For Every Game: Preview 2022

Conference USA preseason predictions for every game, predicted order of finish, and lookahead to the 2022 season.

Just how much does it hurt Conference USA to lose Marshall, Old Dominion, and Southern Miss to the Sun Belt this season?

The league had to quickly scramble this offseason to change up its schedule, it’s having to do even more to keep the business going with Charlotte, FAU, North Texas, Rice, UAB and UTSA bolting in 2023 – Liberty, New Mexico State, Sam Houston and Jacksonville State will enter the fun – and all of that will likely be the main focus of the 2022 season.

And then UAB, UTSA and WKU should be the stars of the conference again.

Where’s the big surprise going to come from?

The problem is that too many schedules have too many tough non-conference games, but it should be entertaining as several teams will likely be fighting for bowl eligibility over the final few weeks.

Knowing there’s going to be a crazy outlier to screw this all up, here are the 2022 Conference USA preseason predictions.

Rice Owls Preview 2022

It’s SO hard to win at Rice.

Small school, brilliant academics, tough requirements – it takes everything to work right for the program to succeed, and it’s been tough under Mike Bloomgren to build this thing up.

It might not seem like much, but winning the regular season finale against Louisiana Tech last year to get to four wins on the year was great.

The program hadn’t cracked the three-win mark since 2015, and the last winning season was in 2014 with an 8-5 run and a bowl victory.

That year, most of Conference USA had problems – Rice came up with a whole lot of wins over bad teams – and its offense was great, and that’s what has to happen this time around.

And more than that, this is the year to come through with something big before taking off for the American Athletic Conference.

The program is moving up, it’ll get a bigger profile, and it has something to shoot for.

But first, Bloomgren has to win. 11-31 in four years, he has to show that he’s the one to lead the program into the new era. He built the thing up to this point, and now it all has to work.

Rice Owls Preview 2022: Offense

The offense had its moments. Controlling the clock hasn’t been a problem – the Owls were tenth in the nation and No. 1 in Conference USA holding the ball for well over 33 minutes a game – and the passing game was solid as the season went on, but turnovers were a problem and the ground attack has to be stronger.

There are enough parts to be better, but averaging more than 21.5 points per game is a must.

The offensive line has to be stronger. It was good in pass protection, but it needs to blast away a little more around the bulk of 300-pound Clay Servin and 330-pound Faae Pepe on the left side. 311-pound Shea Baker is a solid center.

Leading rusher Ali Broussard is back after averaging close to five yards per carry with 569 yards and three scores, but the offense needs to come up with a good rotation. 5-5, 160-pound Cameron Montgomery is a lightning quick option in space.

The Owls got production from the passing game, but they need consistency out of the position. Veteran Wiley Green will likely take over, but former JUCO transfer TJ McMahon will provide a push.

The receiving corps will be a strength even with top target Jake Bailey bailing for SMU. Cedric Patterson averaged over 15 yards per catch with a team-high six scores, Tulsa transfer Sam Crawford could be a dangerous No. 1 target, and former Nebraska quarterback Luke McCaffrey will be an interesting wide receiver option.

Helping even more is the return of 2019 star target Bradley Rozner, who played only one game over the last two seasons.

Rice Owls Preview 2022: Defense

Rice played lots and lots and lots and lots of guys on defense, and now this is a relatively deep group with more options after struggling throughout last year. The D gave up 36 points and 436 yards per game, but it came up with takeaways and there was a bit of a pass rush.

The top tackler was on the nose. Elijah Garcia is done, but the defense relies on the line to make things happen. Former offensive lineman Izeya Floyd is a 326-pounder who’ll take over on the inside, and there’s more quickness in the interior from Ikenna Enechukwu – he’s the team’s leading returning sacker with 4.5.

Playmaking LB Antonio Montero left for Villanova and Desmyn Baker took over for WKU. Aidan Siano got his feet wet last year and should work in the middle, but the D needs big plays from Kenneth Orji and Treshawn Chamberlain on the outside.

There weren’t a lot of picks from the corners, but Jordan Dunbar, Sean Fresch, and Miles McCord combined to make a whole lot of plays to go along with the rough days against the better downfield attacks. Sophomore S Gabe Taylor led the way with three interceptions and made 56 stops – he’ll be a bigger factor.

It’s a new world for Conference USA with the loss of Marshall, Old Dominion, and Southern Miss over to the Sun Belt. There are still plenty of good teams still around, but the league is hanging on through the expansion process.

Can 2021’s star teams keep it all going? UTSA and WKU won’t be quite as good, UAB should be strong, and UTEP might just keep on stunning.

If Florida Atlantic can rise up after a down season, and if North Texas and Middle Tennessee can be bowl-worthy again, it should be a fun run.

The rankings are based on how good the teams should be and not the final projected records. Keeping in mind that this all could/might/will change when we make the final calls in August …

Louisiana Tech vs Rice Game Preview

Why Louisiana Tech Will Win

Louisiana Tech is about to enter a new era after this, but head coach Skip Holtz gets one more game before moving on to other opportunities – whatever they might be.

Losing six of the last seven games was a problem. However, the team was close in fights against NC State and Old Dominion. Now it gets a shot to end its season on a high note against a Rice team that doesn’t do much defensively, has big turnover problems, and won’t get much pressure in the backfield.

Louisiana Tech’s line might not do much for the running game, but it’s not bad at keeping defenses out of the backfield.

Why Rice Will Win

Louisiana Tech is one of those teams that can’t seem to create its own breaks.

It beat Charlotte a few weeks ago, and then it turned the ball over five times in the loss to a horrible Southern Miss team.

Rice has a steady enough passing game to keep things moving and control the clock.

Louisiana Tech doesn’t do anything to control much and the defense gives up a whole lot of points considering it’s not that awful at generating third down stops.

Rice should be able to crank up at least 200 passing yards, hold the ball for close to 35 minutes, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Holtz will go out with a win.

You are what your record says you are, but Louisiana Tech also hasn’t had a whole ton of breaks.

The Rice defense will be balanced, and it’ll seem like it always has the ball, but the Bulldogs will come up with three takeaways and capitalize on them all to end the season with something positive.

Rice vs UTEP Game Preview

Why Rice Will Win

The Rice offense is working.

It was supposed to be a running team as the year went on, but the receivers were there from the start. Okay early on, now the passing attack has kicked it in with 200 yards or more in each of the last four games with a season-high 380 yards against WKU.

The Owls might be throwing well, but they’re about controlling the clock. UTEP lives on time of possession, and the Rice offense should be able to offset that. However …

Why UTEP Will Win

UTEP needs to get its groove back in a three-game losing streak. So what’s going wrong?

The defense has stopped taking the ball away.

The Miners forced 12 takeaways in the six wins, and it has a grand total of zero in the four losses. The Rice offense should be able to help change all of that.

The Owl offense might be playing better, but it’s also giving the ball away in bulk with five turnovers in the loss to WKU and six games with multiple mistakes.

What’s Going To Happen

Rice desperately needs a win to make something positive happen over the back half of the season, but UTEP will turn things back around with enough deep passing shots to matter and more than enough third down stops and takeaways to get by.

It might not be anything pretty, but in the home finale in a strong season, UTEP will close with a bang before going to UAB on the way to a bowl game.
