Georgia Tech vs Pitt Game Preview

Why Georgia Tech Will Win

Welcome to the Brent Key era at Georgia Tech.

The pressure is off, there’s no more speculation about the future of Geoff Collins or whether or not the direction of the program is changing – it is – and no the players can go out and just play.

So is this team doing anything right? The coach got canned four games in, so not really, but there’s a good enough pass rush to bother Kedon Slovis to keep him from getting comfortable.

On the offensive side, the running game that only busted out against Western Carolina has decent enough parts to be dangerous.

Lost in the rough start is that Clemson is good. Ole Miss is good. Going to UCF  is tough. The Yellow Jacket schedule wasn’t easy to start, and now Jeff Sims and the offense get to go against a pass defense that struggled against West Virginia and Tennessee, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Pitt Will Win

The coaching change isn’t going to make the Georgia Tech pass defense better.

Slovis should do just fine with a wee bit of time. The Yellow Jackets were able to hold down UCF’s passing game that doesn’t do a whole lot, but Clemson’s DJ Uiagalelei and Jaxson Dart from Ole Miss were able to put up yards, even if it wasn’t always pretty.

Pitt has a bad mix of things that could take away what the offense wants to do.

The team is great at controlling the clock – Pitt is first in the ACC in time of possession, and Georgia Tech is last – with a pass rush that should live in the backfield.

However …

What’s Going To Happen

The Georgia Tech offense might be more dangerous.

The one thing the coaching change might do is get Sims on the move more with a faster pace to the attack. The O should open it up a bit, take more shots down the field, and …

The Pitt defense will generate too much pressure and ruin most of those plans before they can get going.

The cold and the rain expected on Saturday night won’t help.

Georgia Tech – just like in the other three losses – will have way too hard of a time scoring.

Pitt vs Rhode Island Game Preview

Why Rhode Island Will Win

The Rams have been solid so far in the 2-1 start with a dangerous pass rush, a good downfield passing game, and enough of a ground attack to make Pitt work.

They’ve got the ability to bother the Pitt backfield that’s still trying to get QB Kedon Slovis back and healthy – he missed the Western Michigan game last week – behind an offensive front that’s been disastrous in pass protection.

The Panthers have allowed ten sacks and 21 tackles for loss so far, and it’s just starting to get the running game going.

If Kasim Hill and the URI passing game can get into an early groove, it’ll make the Pitt offense press a whole lot more than it’s going to want to. There will be enough deep shots to matter, but …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Pitt Will Win

The Ram offense isn’t working quite as well as it’s going to need to.

The defense is getting the job done with its pass rush and big plays, but Hill – while he’ll connect on the deep ball – struggles with his consistency and accuracy. The Panther defensive front isn’t going to help make things any better.

This hasn’t been the normal high-powered Pitt pass rush, but it’s more than good enough. The offense is great at controlling the clock, it’ll have the ball for close to 35 minutes, and …

Week 4 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

There’s still work to do.

Pitt will get pushed a little bit by a few big plays from the Rhode Island offense, but it won’t be nearly enough to pull this off.

The Panther running game that took over against Western Michigan will control the tempo and the clock, and the defense that finally got a little bit of a breather after dealing with West Virginia and Tennessee will keep it going after a strong Week 3.

Pitt vs Western Michigan Game Preview

Why Pitt Will Win

This isn’t the Western Michigan team that managed to pull off the 44-41 win over the eventual 2021 ACC champion.

The Broncos got a good offensive balance in the win over Ball State, but there isn’t the pop and explosion of last year, the running game has been just okay, and the run defense has yet to show much of anything.

As always, the Panther pass rush is great, the defense is taking the ball away, and it did a good job of not letting the Tennessee offense go off.

On the flip side, Western Michigan isn’t generating any pressure in the backfield, it has been awful against the run, and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why Western Michigan Will Win

Pitt hasn’t shown enough of a running game so far to fall back on.

QB Kedon Slovis is banged up – as of right now, he’s a gametime decision, but he’s not going to be 100% no matter what – and the Panthers haven’t been able to generate any sort of a push.

Western Michigan might not be doing enough offensively, but it’s dominating the time of possession battle, and that might be enough to make this interesting.

Pitt needs to own the clock, but the defense has been miserable so far on third downs – even with the sacks – and the offense is going to struggle considering the injury concerns.

Week 3 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Western Michigan just doesn’t have the punch to pull this off.

It’s making too many mistakes, the defense hasn’t been quite strong enough, and Pitt has the parts to figure this out even if the running game hasn’t been as good as it should be.

There won’t be anything gorgeous about this, but Pitt will happily take the win no matter how it can get it, hope to rest the key parts against Rhode Island next week, and then dive into the ACC schedule.

West Virginia vs Pitt Game Preview

Why West Virginia Will Win

In the battle of USC quarterbacks, West Virginia might have landed the best of the bunch.

It’s not like the Mountaineer offense was all that bad last year, but it wasn’t consistent. Now it’s about to crank things up a few notches with former USC offensive coordinator Graham Harrell getting to coach up JT Daniels, the former Trojan super-recruit who got hurt, went to Georgia, got hurt, and landed in Morgantown with the upside to put up a massive season if he can stay healthy.

The West Virginia front five is loaded with all-star veterans and should be the best yet in the Neal Brown era. There’s going to be a big problem for the home team if the secondary – that’s always feast-or-famine under Pat Narduzzi, giving up 264 yards per game last season – doesn’t get enough help from the line.

When he’s in a groove, Daniels is a special talent, the Mountaineer defense should be every bit as strong as last year’s bunch that allowed just 350 yards per game, but …

Why Pitt Will Win

The West Virginia offensive line has to prove it.

It might be experienced, and it might be better, but it also didn’t do much of anything last year for the running game and was the worst in the Big 12 in sacks and tackles for loss allowed.

There’s no time to gear up – the Pitt defensive front lives rent free in opposing backfields.

The Panthers were No. 1 in the ACC against the run – granted, that’s because everyone was busy throwing on the questionable secondary – was second in the nation behind Oklahoma State in sacks, and was fifth in the country in tackles for loss.

Start with Habakkuk Baldonado on the outside, Calijah Kancey on the inside, and a linebacking corps that gets all over the field, and Daniels and the rest of the backfield are going to be under a whole bunch of pressure all game long.

And on the other side …

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Thursday & Friday

What’s Going To Happen

That Kedon Slovis guy is pretty good.

The Panthers might not have Kenny Pickett around anymore, and Jordan Addison might be off catching passes on the coast at USC, but Trojan transfer Slovis can carry the workload. He’s not going to have to do it all alone – there will be a bit more balance to keep everything moving.

The return of the Backyard Brawl will be worth the wait.

These two rivals haven’t played since 2011 – 21-20 West Virginia win. This time around, 21-20 might be the first half.

Daniels will take his share of shots both down the field and from the Pitt defensive front on the way to a huge passing day, but it won’t be quite enough to overcome a solid day from Slovis that will be a back-and-forth fight that goes down to the final drive.

Sun Belt Preseason Predictions For Every Game: Preview 2022

Sun Belt predictions for every team and every game in the 2022 college football season

The Sun Belt just got a whole lot more interesting with the addition of Marshall, Old Dominion, and Southern Miss from Conference USA – and getting them a year before it seemed possible – and also brought in FCS powerhouse James Madison to a be a part of the fun.

The divisions are staying for now, but the great additions will make it far, far tougher for Appalachian State, Coastal Carolina, and Louisiana to keep on dominating – even though they might not take that big a step back, if any.

While it might seem a bit cut-and-dry with the way the league is set up, watch out for some potentially big moves from some teams that struggled. The problem will be the schedules for Troy, South Alabama, and Arkansas State. Georgia State and Old Dominion programs that got to bowl games last season will have to fight, too.

The Sun Belt is stronger than ever and the season should be the best yet. The Sun Belt predictions for 2022 are …

2022 Preseason CFN ACC Offensive Player of the Year

RB Sean Tucker, Soph. Syracuse

Go ahead and name any one of about six or so ACC quarterbacks that might be the star of the league, and you probably won’t be wrong. Or, there’s a chance one of the others in the deep lot will rise up and be the best of the bunch. Meanwhile …

Sean Tucker might be the best running back in college football.

Everyone knows what’s coming with 34, and he still able to produce, running for almost 1,500 yards last year with 20 touchdowns with two receiving scores. He’s not all that big, but he’s tough, shifty, and really, really fast.

So yeah, the air attacks will take center stage in the conference, but Tucker should be the best of the offensive bunch.

2022 Preseason CFN ACC Defensive Player of the Year

DT Bryan Bresee, Jr. Clemson

Bresee has only been able to make 36 tackles with 5.5 sacks and 9.5 tackles for loss in his two seasons, but that’s partly because he suffered a torn ACL early last year to go along with a shoulder issue.

When he’s right – and he’s expected to be ready to go – the 6-5, 300-pounder has the talent to be the best overall player in the country and possible No. 1 overall pick with too much athleticism, skill, and quickness to go along with his size.

ACC Preseason Predictions For Every Game: Preview 2022

ACC predictions for every team and every game in the 2022 college football season

The ACC is sticking with the divisions for one more year, and then it all changes in 2023.

Next season, the conference will become one big blob of ACC, with each team getting three permanent opponents to deal with and a rotation happening among the other five teams on the slate.

Make sense?

It’ll be a 3-5-5 format, basically meaning every team plays everyone else in the conference over two seasons.

For now, the ACC continues to be just about the same.

Duke and Georgia Tech will fight for scraps, Clemson – despite not playing for the ACC Championship last year – should be in a battle with NC State for the top spot, and everyone else can beat anybody else in the ACC depending on the moment.

Road games matter, off weeks are huge, and the teams that don’t get Clemson – or, this year, NC State – will be very, very happy.
