Syracuse vs Pitt Game Preview

Why Syracuse Will Win

Pitt isn’t playing well.

Syracuse lost in a tough battle to Clemson and at home to Notre Dame after the banged up team got hurt further, but Pitt has lost three of its last four with the only win over a hapless Virginia Tech.

The Panther offensive line allows way too many plays in the backfield, the passing attack hasn’t been good enough – it hasn’t hit 60% against an FBS program since mid-September – and now it all has to deal with the statistical-best defense in the ACC.

The Orange might be hurting, but they can still get into the backfield and hold up against the good passing teams, but …

Breaking down the CFP Top 25 rankings

Why Pitt Will Win

How healthy is Syracuse?

QB Garrett Shrader is a game time decision, the defensive front is beaten up, and it’s not even going to get a whole lot better in the November grind.

The team was able to hold up well against Clemson, but Notre Dame was able to run too easily and hold down the Orange offense from doing much of anything right.

No, Pitt might not be playing all that well, and the Syracuse defense really is okay even with all the bumps and bruises. The Panthers, though, should be able to control the clock, the defensive front continues to be solid at generating pressure, and that might be just enough.

Essentially, Syracuse is playing like it could use a week or two off, and it’s not going to get it. On the other side …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Pitt needs the win.

At Virginia, Duke, and at Miami is what the Panthers have to close, and they should be able to win two of the last three to get bowl eligible. They don’t and won’t want to mess with it.

They’ll start running right away and keep on pounding until Syracuse proves it can hold up. Pitt is 3-0 when running for more than 230 yards, and it won’t get there.

It’s not going to be anything easy, but the Orange will rise up just enough defensively to hold on, the passing attack will work no matter who’s under center, and finally, Sean Tucker and the ground game will get moving.

Pitt at North Carolina Game Preview

Why Pitt Will Win

It’s been an up-and-down season, but that works if you’re a fan of patterns.

The Panthers have gone win-loss-win-loss in the last four games, with the success mostly depending on the steadiness of the ground game.

Things usually go well when they run for 200 yards or more – going 3-0 when they do – and it helps when they’re not turning the ball over in bunches like they did in losses to Georgia Tech and Louisville.

North Carolina was able to stuff the Virginia Tech and Miami rushing attacks, but it’s getting hammered for well over 200 yards by everyone else.

But …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 8

Why North Carolina Will Win

North Carolina is winning despite the ACC’s worst run defense struggling as much as it is.

The offense continues to rip through everyone with a highly-efficient passing game that’s averaging well over 300 yards per game, and it helps that the running game is working, too.

The Panthers are usually able to hit 150 yards on the ground without a problem – the one time they didn’t was in the loss to Notre Dame.

They might not get to 150 against Pitt, but the offense has enough firepower through the air to overcome that.

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

North Carolina’s offense will make Pitt press, and that’s where the mistakes will come.

The Panthers have turned it over eight times in the last three games and are 0-3 when giving it up multiple times. North Carolina doesn’t force turnovers, but it’ll get two in this, Drake Maye will throw for well over 300 yards, and the Tar Heels – despite the D – will keep on rolling.

Pitt at Louisville Game Preview

Why Pitt Will Win

Pitt has the offensive versatility to adapt and adjust as the game goes on.

It doesn’t have to wing it around the yard, but it’s got the ability to crank up 300 yards against a Cardinal secondary that was roasted by Boston College and Virginia for 617 yards over the last two games.

Effective on the ground averaging 4.7 yards per carry, the Panthers hammered Virginia Tech for six touchdowns and well over 300 yards in the win two weeks ago. The offense will need everything it can get in this, and it’ll need help the pass rush to get QB Malik Cunningham and the Cardinal O off the field.

The Louisville passing game needs to be more consistent and efficient, however …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Louisville Will Win

Pitt is usually the team with the devastating pass rush that takes over games. This year Louisville has been the best in the ACC at getting to the quarterback.

The D might not be anything special, and the pressure doesn’t necessarily translate into help for the secondary, but the 23 sacks have helped with seven coming in the key win over Virginia two weeks ago.

The Pitt offensive line is okay, but it’s not a brick wall. It can pound away, but it’s allowing well over two sacks per game and it’s about to have problems on third downs.

There’s that, and …

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Turnovers. Both teams have problems with them, but they affect the Panthers more going 0-2 when they turn it over multiple times and 4-0 when they don’t.

Louisville might not stop good passing teams from coming up with big yards, but the pass rush forces mistakes with eight takeaways in the last four games.

It’s a swing game for both teams.

Louisville always seems to disappoint when it’s time to come up with a key win, but the home side gets this helped by one extra takeaway.

Pitt vs Virginia Tech Game Preview

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

If Georgia Tech could come up with a win over Pitt …

It’s been a rough ride for Virginia Tech with the offense sputtering and the defense not making up for the problems with takeaways. The parts are there to be better – Grant Wells is a decent quarterback, and there’s a good rotation of runners – but it’s just not clicking.

So what’s going right?

The defense is good enough to keep things interesting and close.

It’s great on third downs and can hold up against the run, but it needs help from the other side. Start with this: the pass protection is there. You can’t hang with Pitt if you can’t slow down that pass rush, and Virginia Tech can do that.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 5

Why Pitt Will Win

The Virginia Tech offense really, really isn’t working.

The passing game isn’t efficient, the running game is averaging just 109 yards per outing, and scoring points has been like pulling teeth averaging just 18 per game.

Okay, but Georgia Tech is having problems, too, and it was able to get past Pitt 26-21 last week. How?

Turnovers. Pitt was okay on giveaways all year, and then it turned it over three times to the Yellow Jackets. Virginia Tech’s defense is doing a slew of nice things, but it’s not coming up with takeaways generating just four on the year.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Here’s where Pitt bounces back.

The offense was okay against Georgia Tech, but the turnovers were too much to overcome. The O will stay balanced, and the defensive side will keep the struggling Hokies to under 300 yards.

Virginia Tech has to take advantage of every opportunity and has to take a few chances. It hasn’t been able to do either on a regular basis so far.
