Cincinnati 24, Notre Dame 13 Reaction

Let’s save all of the College Football Playoff talk for the next two months and start with this.

Cincinnati did what it had to do.

We’ll absolutely argue about whether or not the Bearcat schedule and overall body of work will be worthy of the final four – if the team goes unscathed – but it went on the road and beat Indiana, and it went on the road to beat a Notre Dame team coming off the buzz of the win over Wisconsin.

The Bearcats didn’t run all that well, but they got the hard yards when needed against the great Notre Dame defensive front. Desmond Ridder wasn’t perfect, but he didn’t throw any picks and he hit the downfield throws the Irish couldn’t connect on.

There were two turnovers, and the problems on third down will be a big deal if there really is an important showdown at some point, but they held up once the Irish had a little momentum in the second half, the American Athletic Conference lines held up, and the program proved it could win a game like this with everyone watching and all the pressure on its shoulders.

Give it a few days to breathe. Let the program enjoy the moment, and then the CFP spotlight is on.

Oklahoma vs Kansas State Game Preview

Why Oklahoma Will Win

No, the Oklahoma offense isn’t working like it’s supposed to, and this hasn’t been the dominant force everyone was expected, but it’s 4-0, it’s been pushed, and this might just be a case of getting through the early problems before it all starts to rock.

Last year at this time OU was 1-2 – with a loss to Kansas State – because of a massive turnover problem. The mistakes have been limited a bit with just three turnovers in the first four games.

Spencer Rattler has been fine. There were a few turnovers against Tulane, but he’s hitting 74% of his passes for an offense that’s been more about control than fury – and that’s okay.

The D is doing what it’s supposed to with a whole lot of sacks, takeaways, and big plays on third downs. However …

Why Kansas State Will Win

The Oklahoma running game is just okay.

Rattler isn’t going to take off, and that’s sort of a problem for an attack that went ballistic when Kyler Murray and Jalen Hurts were able to explode out of the backfield.

The running back tandem of Kennedy Brooks and Eric Gray are okay, but the Kansas State defensive front has been solid so far against the run – it’s not getting gouged and it should get to Rattler enough to matter. However …

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Can Kansas State get steady play out of the quarterback?

Skylar Thompson might come back from a knee injury, but that’s a huge question mark. Will Howard struggled against Oklahoma State and got banged up, but Jaren Lewis stepped in and threw well enough to keep the game alive.

This will be on the Kansas State defense.

The Oklahoma offense would have to take things up a few levels to put this away with an explosive scoring day, and that’s not happening against a K-State D that keeps the game alive.

The Wildcats have won two straight in the series, and make it three with the Sooners failing to put the game away when they have a chance in the first half.

Why Oklahoma Will Win

The Sooners are rolling.

They’ve won eight of their last nine games with the offense making seemingly every key basket and the defense clamping down hard from three – at least over the last few games.

Kansas State struggles to score.

Oh sure, it managed to pull off a win over TCU to end a brutal run of 13 straight losses, but it only scored 62. The Sooners give up under 70 a game, don’t turn it over enough to give the Wildcats easy points, and they just aren’t making enough mistakes overall. But …

Why Kansas State Will Win

It’s the third straight road game and the fourth in the last five for OU.

Kansas State – for all of its problems – does manage to keep scores relatively low. It’s big issue is on the offensive side, but the defense is just decent enough at stopping the three to keep things from getting out of hand.

It was able to come through with the stunning win over TCU on the road after allowing just 4-of-18 from three, won the rebounding battle, and …

What’s Going To Happen

The Sooners had no issues against the Wildcats the first time around in a 76-50 win back in mid-January. They aren’t going to have to stress too much.

It’ll be close for about 30 minutes, but OU will keep on creeping ahead until the dam breaks with a big run to put it away. Kansas State has no ability from three to get back in it.

Oklahoma (1-0) vs Kansas State (0-1) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Kansas State Will Win

A whole lot of parts to the Kansas State puzzle and style worked just fine against Arkansas State in the 35-31 loss, and it all needs to be perfect again.

The Wildcats committed too many penalties – sinning eight times – but it dominated the time of possession battle by almost nine minutes, was +2 in turnover margin, and it just needed one last stop.

The offense wasn’t sharp enough – and give credit to Arkansas State – but the team had several chances to put the game away, and couldn’t quite do it.

This is still a fantastic Wildcat team with the offense that could flip the switch and be a whole lot more efficient and effective after the rough opener. Defensively, it should be able to hold down an Oklahoma ground game that couldn’t get much moving against Missouri State, but …

Why Oklahoma Will Win

Kansas State made the Arkansas State wide receivers look like future NFL stars, and now the secondary has to deal with the Oklahoma corps.

The Wildcats generated decent pressure, but they were still hammered for 330 passing yards and five touchdowns on big play after big play.

Enter Spencer Rattler and the Oklahoma passing game that got in its work against Missouri State with 31 first quarter points, four long touchdown passes and a ton of deep plays.

Oklahoma has the defensive front to keep Kansas State from establishing a steady running game and make Skylar Thompson become even more of a passer. He was fine against ASU, but the team isn’t built for a shootout. However …

What’s Going To Happen

Thompson was brilliant in last year’s 48-41 win over the Sooners, throwing for 213 yards and running for four scores in the upset.

Assume Oklahoma will be ready this time around.

Kansas State is a lot stronger than it looked against Arkansas State, but it’s going to struggle to keep up the pace when Rattler gets into a second half groove. The Wildcat pass rush will be good enough to give the new guy some problems, but the OU offense will be too strong as the game goes on.
