No escape: Lincoln Riley was going to face a challenging 2024 schedule no matter what

One way or another, Riley was going to change conferences in 2024, whether from the #Big12 to the #SEC or the #Pac12 to the #B1G. Let’s discuss.

We live in a world where Lincoln Riley coaches at USC, and we’re very happy we live in such a world. Yet, with the 2024 Southeastern Conference football schedule being released on Wednesday evening, it is impossible to not devote at least a little time and thought to the subject of what life would be like for Riley if he had stayed at Oklahoma.

Sooners Wire has you covered, providing Oklahoma football’s SEC schedule for 2024.

Sooners Wire’s Bryant Crews wrote this in reaction to the announcement that Oklahoma would host Alabama in the 2024 SEC season:

“The Sooners hold the all-time lead at 3-2-1 with their most recent win in the 2014 Sugar Bowl.

“These are two schools that are in the top 10 all-time in wins. Every time they meet, it’s a heavyweight battle. The Sooners handed the Crimson Tide a 37-27 loss in Bama’s last trip to Norman in 2002. It will be just the third time they have played on either school’s campus and the first time since 2003 when Oklahoma visited Bryant-Denny Stadium.

“Brent Venables has some success against the Crimson Tide, helping Clemson win two national championships against Alabama in the College Football Playoff.”

Imagine if Riley, not Venables, was coaching OU this season. Just how different would his world have been compared to his current life in Los Angeles? It’s worth taking a look in the middle of June, before we all focus on August camp and the 2023 USC season:

It is undeniably and unavoidably one of the great what-ifs in modern college football: What if Lincoln Riley had stayed at Oklahoma, shepherding the Sooners through their transition from the Big 12 to the SEC? Riley had that choice. He could have made that choice.

He chose differently. He went to USC to start a new chapter of his life and his coaching career.

On Wednesday evening, the 2024 SEC football schedule was released, marking the first SEC schedule the Oklahoma Sooners will play when they join the Texas Longhorns in a 16-team iteration of the Southeastern Conference.

There’s not a lot to get into a twist over.

There’s no missing fellow 2024 SEC brother Texas – that was never going to be off the slate – but missing defending Big 12 champ Kansas State is nice, and not having to play Texas Tech this season matters. Baylor is off the schedule, too – the Bears are missing both OU and Oklahoma State.

Out of the four new teams to the conference, the Sooners don’t have to play Houston, but …

Not only is the date in Provo tough no matter what, it comes at the end of a run of three road games in four weeks. Granted, one of the road trips is over in Stillwater against Oklahoma State, but still, that’s going to be a late-season grind before closing out with what should be a showdown against TCU.

If BYU is Oklahoma’s toughest road game outside of the state, there’s no real problem.

Yes, there are three road games in four weeks late in the season, but again, one of them is Oklahoma State – no stress on the travel there – and while Kansas and BYU are tough, a good Sooner team should be able to handle them.

Again, Texas is always going to be on the schedule and in Dallas. That’s obviously a neutral site game, one of the road games is at Tulsa, and the other is manageable against a rebuilding Cincinnati.

The non-conference slate is a breeze, the home slate is solid, and every sets up for a huge season if the team itself can bounce back quickly.

Oklahoma Football Schedule Analysis: It’s going to be a fun start, but nothing all that bad that can’t be handled with relative ease. Beating Tulane and Western Carolina have to be easy, and the fun of Nebraska coming to town could go away fast if the former Big 8/Big 12 rival remains as mediocre as it’s been over the last several years.

There’s only one game in Norman, though, over the first four Big 12 games – that’s a bit misleading. The Texas game is obviously in Dallas, and the last road date is at Kansas. Two of the last four games are on the road, too, but there’s a week off in there, Iowa State is a home game, and OU only leaves the great state of Oklahoma once after October 23rd.

Of course that’s not how this is going to work, but there isn’t a problem with the non-conference schedule, the Sooners take care of Texas, and they roll through Iowa State and Oklahoma State in the final two games on the way to yet another Big 12 Championship appearance.

Oklahoma Football Schedule Worst Case Scenario: Something goes wrong with a brain-cramp loss at Kansas State, and the College Football Playoff dreams go bye-bye early for the second year in a row with a loss to Texas.

There’s another loss or two along the way to not only miss out on the CFP, but dropping a few games – like against Iowa State, at Oklahoma State, or to TCU – make it the rare year without going to the Big 12 title game.
