Oklahoma vs Iowa State Game Preview

Why Oklahoma Will Win

The Sooners might not exactly be back on track, but they should come back stronger with the win over Kansas followed up by a two week break to be ready for the finishing kick.

The big problem so far is a defense that’s getting ripped to shreds by just about everyone in Big 12 play so far, and now it gets a break against an Iowa State offense that doesn’t do enough to keep up in any sort of a shootout.

That’s not the Cyclone style – defense, control, slow things down – but if the Sooners can get out to a quick start it’s going to be hard for the home side to comeback quickly. There’s a functional Iowa State passing game, but it hasn’t been enough in an 0-4 Big 12 run.

However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 8

Why Iowa State Will Win

That defense is really, really, really good.

It’s so frustrating Iowa State might be 3-4 and technically the worst team in a solid Big 12, but it’s also 13 points away from being unbeaten.

There’s an offense, and it’s not bad. It just doesn’t crank up 40 points per game like others in the Big 12, but in this there’s a chance the overall formula could and should work.

Run the ball against the leaky OU defensive front, control the clock against the worst team in the Big 12 in time of possession, and win the turnover battle. The Sooners have given it away five times in the last two games, but …

What’s Going To Happen

Iowa State can’t afford any sort of mistakes in this. The margin for error is way too slim, and it’s a problem giving the ball away twice in three of the last four games.

At home, the efforts for the Cyclone defense will finally be enough for the win. The offense will grind it out against the OU defense and have the ball for close to 40 minutes, and the rested defense will take over in the second half.

Oklahoma vs Iowa State Game Preview

Why Oklahoma Will Win

Oklahoma is still good at college football.

For all of the talk about not playing anyone who was any good before going to Baylor, everything is still on the table.

Beat Iowa State, beat Oklahoma State, beat – most likely – Oklahoma State again in the Big 12 Championship, be 12-1 as a Power Five champion, get into the College Football Playoff … maybe.

Taking down the Cyclones on the road would be a strong first step into respectability, and it starts by getting the running game going again.

Baylor bottled up Caleb Williams, the line didn’t generate a push, and it’s been two games in a row without hitting 100 yards on the ground.

The O rolled for 525 yards or more in three of the four games before last week. Now it gets a Cyclone defense that got rocked by Texas Tech for over 500 yards, allowed close to 500 yards against West Virginia, and suddenly it looked beatable.

Iowa State is 0-2 when giving up 300 passing yards, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Iowa State Will Win

Iowa State might have bowed out of the Big 12 title race with last week’s loss to Texas Tech, but it should be able to do a whole lot of the same things Baylor was able to do to Oklahoma last week.

Breece Hall and the Cyclone running game stalled in the loss to the Red Raiders, but he’s still a Doak Walker Award-level back, the ground attack is still great, and OU just gave up almost 300 yards to the Baylor running game.

Yeah, the defense has had problems stopping teams from throwing over the second half of the season, but the run D remains a rock and the pass defense is the second-best in the Big 12.

This is a veteran team that’s not going to beat itself on the road. It doesn’t have turnover problems, the lines are terrific, and there aren’t a slew of penalties.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

Caleb Williams and the passing game will bounce back fast.

Williams might be a bit banged up, but he’s still the playmaker who hit over 75% of his passes over the three games as a starter before Baylor, he ripped Texas Tech off over 400 yards and six touchdowns in a near-perfect game, and he’s going to get some help.

It’s the home finale before going up the road a few miles to deal with Oklahoma State. The Sooners are going to do what they do – they’ll be too sleepy for about 20 minutes – but the lines are about to come up with a big day and the run defense will show up after last week’s embarrassment.

Why Iowa State Will Win

Can Iowa State go the entire Big 12 season without a win?

It hasn’t won a game of any kind since before Christmas, but the team has played well at times with a good fight in a 77-72 loss to Baylor, it didn’t get annihilated in either game against Oklahoma, and in general, the team plays just well enough to not get embarrassed.

At least, most of the time.

The team has a good pace to see games within range, it hits everything on the free throw line, and it’s not bad a defending the three. But …

Why Oklahoma Will Win

You don’t go 2-21 without having a whole slew of issues.

The Cyclones don’t rebound well enough, they turn it over a whole lot, and consistent shooting has been a problem. They haven’t hit the 30% mark from three in any of the last three games or in five of the last seven.

One big run from the Sooners should be able to put this away. In the first two games against the Cyclones, OU didn’t shoot well from three and had a few issues getting that run, and …

What’s Going To Happen

The last win over Iowa State was the last win for Oklahoma, period – that was back on February 20th.

The Sooners really, really, really need a good performance after losing four straight, but it’s going to take a while to get there. Iowa State will be plucky and annoying for about 25 minutes, but the Sooners will finally wake up in time to pull away late to move on.

There’s not going to be anything pretty about it, but it’ll be a win.

Oklahoma (13-5) vs Iowa State (2-15) Game Preview

Why Oklahoma Will Win

Iowa State doesn’t score.

It doesn’t generate enough free throws to score that way – even though it makes them when it takes them. It doesn’t hit enough from three, generate enough rebounds to come up with second chance points, and it doesn’t come up with enough defensive big plays to get points in transition.

It hasn’t scored 60 points in either of the last two games and struggles to put into the 70s. It was able to get to 72 points in the first meeting with the Sooners and still lost by seven. But …

Why Iowa State Will Win

That first loss to the Sooners was on the road and that’s when the threes were dropping. The Cyclones had their best outside shooting game of the season because the defense had one of its worst days of the year.

Can they keep OU from getting on the move and making more than half of its shots?

When the Sooners aren’t on, they lose. They’ve lost their last three games when not making 40% from the field, and Iowa State – as bad as the D is – has been able to hold Kansas and TCU to under 40% in the last four games.

What’s Going To Happen

Iowa State will be plucky at home – just the second home date in the last six games – but the scoring just won’t be there for a full 40 minutes to pull this off.

Oklahoma might need a little while to get going after not playing for a week, but it’ll get rolling in the second half.

Oklahoma (11-5) vs Iowa State (2-10) Game Preview

Why Oklahoma Will Win

The Sooners are coming off a tough game against Texas Tech, but before that everything was clucking defensively to go along with lights-out shooting from three. The outside shooting stalled against the Red Raiders, but everything is about to ramp up against a struggling Cyclone D.

Iowa State is miserable at guarding the three, struggles at getting the key rebounds, and doesn’t score consistently enough to keep up if OU goes on a run. But …

Why Iowa State Will Win

The Cyclones will keep shooting from the outside – mostly because they’re usually behind and need a spark – and they’re not bad at generating points off of defensive pressure.

No, they’re not going to shut down the Sooner offense cold, but the have a shot at getting hot against a D that struggles against teams that can hit from the outside. Iowa State is good enough at moving the ball around to get the right shot from the outside.

What’s Going To Happen

Iowa State has yet to come up with a win in Big 12 play and this should be the right time to come up with a big upset if the offense can shoot like it did in the tough loss to West Virginia a few days ago, but …

Oklahoma’s loss to Texas Tech changes the dynamic. It’ll be a focused Sooner team that won’t make enough mistakes to screw this up.

Oklahoma (1-1) vs Iowa State (1-1) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Oklahoma Will Win

Oklahoma really was good against Kansas State. Now it has to clean things up.

Spencer Rattler and the passing game were terrific, the run defense held the Wildcats to just 66 yards, and the team gained 117 more yards, but being -4 in turnover margin was a killer along with the ten penalties. Tighten things up, and everything changes.

OU collapsed. It was up 35-14 before it all fell apart, but that’s part of the deal in this weird year. It was a straight up gack by the Sooners – it’s good enough to get it all back in a hurry and get even sharper as Rattler gets more time in the system.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Iowa State Will Win

Oklahoma doesn’t have a running game yet.

Rattler can run, but he’s not Jalen Hurts or Kyler Murray when he gets on the move – he finished with -5 yards – and the absence of the key backs from last year is a problem. Seth McGowan ran for 73 yards, but the offensive line that’s supposed to be terrific hasn’t been good enough.

Iowa State didn’t exactly get its groove back after the Louisiana loss, but the offense was balanced and effective enough to survive the 37-34 win over TCU.

Breece Hall ran for 155 yards and three scores, Brock Purdy was back on track with a solid day, and the passing game should work just fine against an OU secondary that was torched by Kansas State’s Skylar Thompson when the team was in comeback mode.

It’s been a shaky start, but there’s more than enough experience in place to pull this off.

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

What’s Going To Happen

It’s been three years since the Cyclones pulled off the shocker against the Sooners, and they’re going to press hard at home.

Rattler might be brilliant, and he might have the upside to be the next great Oklahoma quarterback, but he’s got to prove he can shake off a bad fourth quarter against Kansas State, and he has to process things faster – that’s just a function of inexperience.

Iowa State got hit for 400 passing yards by TCU and survived. It’ll get hit by a huge day from Rattler and won’t be able to come through in the fourth quarter like Kansas State did.
