Oklahoma vs Kansas State Game Preview

Why Kansas State Will Win

What the heck was that?

Where was the Kansas State that dominated Missouri and looked like it was about to make a big run in the Big 12? That could still happen – it was a 17-10 loss to Tulane that obviously doesn’t matter in Big 12 play – and now the running game has to get working again.

The offense isn’t screwing up with just two turnovers and minimal penalties so far, the defense has been terrific on third downs – it’s third in the nation in passing efficiency defense – and overall the team is +5 in turnover margin.

Yes, Oklahoma has been great over the first three weeks, but it hasn’t actually played anyone with a pulse.

UTEP, Kent State, and yeah, Nebraska. Kansas State represents a massive step up in competition, but …

Why Oklahoma Will Win

What do you do against inferior competition? You drill them in easy games that get everything sharpened up for what’s coming.

Oklahoma has been close to flawless to start the Brent Venables era. It’s not the flashy team of the Lincoln Riley era, but the defense has been nasty and there hasn’t been a hint of drama so far.

One turnover. The Sooners lost a fumble against Nebraska, and like Kansas State, penalties aren’t an issue.

The pass rush and defensive front should be able to live in the Wildcat backfield, the run defense that’s allowing 2.8 yards per carry should be solid, and considering there’s little to no passing game to worry about, the secondary should be able to cheat up enough to make a difference.

What’s Going To Happen

Kansas State has a funky style that could make this interesting.

It’s not going to screw up, and it’s going to hold the ball for over 35 minutes. However, the OU defense is playing well, there’s absolutely no downfield passing attack coming from Martinez, and the balance of the Sooner offensive O should be too much to overcome.

Oklahoma vs Kansas State Game Preview

Why Oklahoma Will Win

No, the Oklahoma offense isn’t working like it’s supposed to, and this hasn’t been the dominant force everyone was expected, but it’s 4-0, it’s been pushed, and this might just be a case of getting through the early problems before it all starts to rock.

Last year at this time OU was 1-2 – with a loss to Kansas State – because of a massive turnover problem. The mistakes have been limited a bit with just three turnovers in the first four games.

Spencer Rattler has been fine. There were a few turnovers against Tulane, but he’s hitting 74% of his passes for an offense that’s been more about control than fury – and that’s okay.

The D is doing what it’s supposed to with a whole lot of sacks, takeaways, and big plays on third downs. However …

Week 5 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Kansas State Will Win

The Oklahoma running game is just okay.

Rattler isn’t going to take off, and that’s sort of a problem for an attack that went ballistic when Kyler Murray and Jalen Hurts were able to explode out of the backfield.

The running back tandem of Kennedy Brooks and Eric Gray are okay, but the Kansas State defensive front has been solid so far against the run – it’s not getting gouged and it should get to Rattler enough to matter. However …

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Can Kansas State get steady play out of the quarterback?

Skylar Thompson might come back from a knee injury, but that’s a huge question mark. Will Howard struggled against Oklahoma State and got banged up, but Jaren Lewis stepped in and threw well enough to keep the game alive.

This will be on the Kansas State defense.

The Oklahoma offense would have to take things up a few levels to put this away with an explosive scoring day, and that’s not happening against a K-State D that keeps the game alive.

The Wildcats have won two straight in the series, and make it three with the Sooners failing to put the game away when they have a chance in the first half.

Why Kansas State Will Win

A whole lot of parts to the Kansas State puzzle and style worked just fine against Arkansas State in the 35-31 loss, and it all needs to be perfect again.

The Wildcats committed too many penalties – sinning eight times – but it dominated the time of possession battle by almost nine minutes, was +2 in turnover margin, and it just needed one last stop.

The offense wasn’t sharp enough – and give credit to Arkansas State – but the team had several chances to put the game away, and couldn’t quite do it.

This is still a fantastic Wildcat team with the offense that could flip the switch and be a whole lot more efficient and effective after the rough opener. Defensively, it should be able to hold down an Oklahoma ground game that couldn’t get much moving against Missouri State, but …

Why Oklahoma Will Win

Kansas State made the Arkansas State wide receivers look like future NFL stars, and now the secondary has to deal with the Oklahoma corps.

The Wildcats generated decent pressure, but they were still hammered for 330 passing yards and five touchdowns on big play after big play.

Enter Spencer Rattler and the Oklahoma passing game that got in its work against Missouri State with 31 first quarter points, four long touchdown passes and a ton of deep plays.

Oklahoma has the defensive front to keep Kansas State from establishing a steady running game and make Skylar Thompson become even more of a passer. He was fine against ASU, but the team isn’t built for a shootout. However …

What’s Going To Happen

Thompson was brilliant in last year’s 48-41 win over the Sooners, throwing for 213 yards and running for four scores in the upset.

Assume Oklahoma will be ready this time around.

Kansas State is a lot stronger than it looked against Arkansas State, but it’s going to struggle to keep up the pace when Rattler gets into a second half groove. The Wildcat pass rush will be good enough to give the new guy some problems, but the OU offense will be too strong as the game goes on.
