College football game-day odds: Notre Dame vs. Marshall

What are your picks today?

Not many coaches have started 0-2 at Notre Dame and without looking it up I would guess that even fewer started 0-3.  That’s what’s ahead for Marcus Freeman and the Fighting Irish this afternoon as they host Marshall in the 2022 home opener.

Some have joked about Freeman being on the hot seat with his 0-2 start as a coach and we all assume that first victory will come today with Notre Dame being a big home favorite.

It’s the first meeting ever between Notre Dame and Marshall and here are the latest lines, courtesy of Tipico Sportsbook:

  • Pointspread: Notre Dame -20.5 (that’s not a misprint)
  • Moneylines: Notre Dame -1400, Marshall +800
  • Total: 48.5 points

Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. ET as the game can be seen on NBC.

Notre Dame social media goes full Wizard of Oz for home opener

Home opener hype!

In recent years Notre Dame has opened the home slate of the regular season by welcoming some huge brands to Notre Dame Stadium as Texas (2015), Michigan (2018) have both helped open the venue for the year but this year won’t offer quite the same punch with Marshall.

It’s the first meeting ever between Notre Dame and Marshall as the two have the Randy Moss and Cain Madden connections, and that’s about it in terms of history on the gridiron.  However, Marshall is a very accomplished program that because of a tragedy over 50 years ago, and because of great successes as a I-AA program in the late-90’s, draws more attention than other programs that are roughly the same caliber.

That wasn’t the direction the Notre Dame media team went with their hype video for the 2022 home opener though as they instead did their best Dorothy impressions from “The Wizard of Oz” by reminding Fighting Irish fans that there really is no place quite like home.  Take a watch below:

Notre Dame has also announced that Saturday’s game is now officially a sellout.

Know your foe, Marshall: Five Thundering Herd players who could give Notre Dame problems

The Herd put up 55 points last week and only allowed 3

After putting up 55-points and holding opponent Norfolk State to just a field goal, the Thundering Herd obviously opened the season with a bang. Their challenge this week will be much more difficult, as they travel to South Bend and face-off against Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish are 0-1, but are heavily favored and should handily defeat Marshall. That doesn’t mean there won’t be some players that give the Irish problems this Saturday and here are five from the Herd that could.

Notre Dame-Marshall Game Predictions

Irish by how many?

Notre Dame opens the home slate of the 2022 season with an 0-1 record but a realistic chance to be a College Football Playoff team with opportunities ahead.  Saturday won’t be a resume-type game but should result in Marcus Freeman’s first win as a head coach.

Despite the significant spread and Marshall taking on their first Power Five opponent in four years, there is plenty for Notre dame fans to keep an eye on this Saturday.

Will the offensive line look the part of what it was hyped to be instead of how it performed at Ohio State?

Will the playcalling ask for Tyler Buchner to push the ball down the field a bit more this week?

Can the defense perform for four quarters and not run out of gas through three?

Here is how the Fighitng Irish Wire staff (and a couple of our friends) see Saturday’s home opener going:

Notre Dame getting All-American back for Marshall game

What are your expectations for this offensive line by say, the first weekend in November?

Notre Dame had what will likely end up being their toughest regular season test in their Week 1 loss at Ohio State and the biggest story for the Irish afterwards was how much their offensive line struggled.  The opponent this week isn’t anywhere near the same in terms of talent as Marshall awaits in the 2022 home opener Saturday, but Notre Dame will be getting All-American interior offensive lineman Jarrett Patterson back.

Patterson, a graduate student, missed the Ohio State game with an injured foot but Marcus Freeman met the media on Thursday and stated that Patterson has practiced all week and the expectation is for him to play Saturday.

It won’t be easy to necessarily gauge the difference Patterson makes simply because of the level of competition, but for this offensive line to be ticking the time BYU and Clemson show up on the schedule, the more reps together for the top-unit the better.

In-state 2024 athlete will be visiting Notre Dame this weekend

This two-way star will be in house on Saturday

It is home opening weekend for [autotag]Notre Dame[/autotag] and with that will bring in plenty of recruits to South Bend to take in the game atmosphere against Marshall. Although the hype of hosting the Thundering Herd won’t match week one’s game, there will still be a high level of excitement in the air.

[autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag]should get his first win as the Notre Dame head coach and in-state 2024 athlete [autotag]Patrick Clacks III[/autotag] from Andrean High School will be in attendance. The six-foot-two-inch and 180-pound wide receiver and defensive back tweeted out earlier today that he will make the trip west this Saturday.

I was first made aware of Clacks by Micah Lowe, a defensive backs coach that raved about him. Then after watching his tape multiple times, always coming away impressed. The Irish staff are very familiar with Andrean also, as [autotag]Drayk Bowen[/autotag], a 2023 Notre Dame linebacker commit, preps there as well.

With his size and speed, Clacks could be a terror on either side of the ball. Great to see that the Irish staff have noticed him and will host him on campus.
