Georgia Tech vs Duke Game Preview

Why Duke Will Win

Kansas is hogging the surprise team spotlight, but Duke needs to be right there – even though it lost to the Jayhawks 35-27.

New head coach Mike Elko has instantly helped boost up an offense that’s balanced, doesn’t give the ball away, and is getting shocking great play out of the offensive front.

Get the ball out of the quarterback’s hands, get the backs in space, don’t allow plays in the backfield. That’s what the Blue Devils are doing, and if they can keep it up they negate Georgia Tech’s one big thing.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 5

Why Georgia Tech Will Win

The Yellow Jacket defense can get behind the line.

They didn’t do it too much in the shocking win over Pitt, but they’ve got the pieces to create negative plays and force turnovers.

Duke might be great at keeping defenses from being disruptive, but Georgia Tech has to hurry things up a little more.

Under interim head coach Brent Key, the plan has been to one up the offense more turn the stars loose, and see what happens. The result was a 232-yard rushing day against Pitt and a win – even if QB Jeff Sims struggled.

The same has to apply here. Get the ground game going right away against a Duke defense that got ripped on by Kansas – and has been a bit off here and there against others – and the defense has to …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Force turnovers.

Georgia Tech was +3 in turnover margin against Pitt, and there’s the problem. Again, Duke doesn’t turn the ball over with just two lonely inconsequential interceptions on the season.

This is a more fun Yellow Jacket team now, but it won’t be able to hold down the Duke balance on offense and won’t get the mistakes needed to pull this off.

North Carolina vs Virginia Tech Game Preview

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

So what’s going right with the Hokies?

It’s going to be a process before things start to come together under new head coach Brent Pry, but the defense hasn’t been bad.

West Virginia was balanced and moved with ease in the 33-10 win last week, but overall the Hokie D has been great on third downs, the secondary has been solid, and the 218 rushing yards by the Mountaineers was the first time this year anyone has been able to move on the ground.

On the flip side, the North Carolina run defense has been abysmal. Everyone is getting fat running on the Tar Heels with Appalachian State, Georgia State, and Notre Dame combining for close to 800 rushing yards with six scores.

Virginia Tech hasn’t been able to run well so far, but it has to try.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why North Carolina Will Win

Yeah, Virginia Tech’s defense has technically been okay so far, but playing Old Dominion, Boston College, and Wofford had something to do with that.

The North Carolina defense might not know the season has started, but the offensive side is rolling with ease, it’s averaging 47 points per game, and it’s averaging over 500 yards per game.

Get up fast, make Virginia Tech have to crank up the passing game, and all should be fine. Hokie QB Grant Wells might put up some yards, but the offense isn’t converting off the decent drives.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Can North Carolina finally have an easy game against an FBS team?

It’s the team’s own fault for not being able to do enough defensively, but Virginia Tech doesn’t have the pop to do much once the scoring starts rolling.

The Tar Heels will rely mostly on the ground game to start, and then Drake Maye and the passing attack will take over as the Hokie D gets picked apart.

Notre Dame vs North Carolina Game Preview

Why Notre Dame Will Win

Is that the turning point? Was the broken up Hail Mary and the collective sigh of relief the moment when the pressure valve was released and this Irish team can start playing like it’s supposed to?

Fortunately, North Carolina might be the perfect cure for an ailing offense.

The Irish can’t move the chains, can’t run the ball, and can’t get anything consistently moving. However, the passing game was sharper and more accurate with Drew Pyne in least week – 17-of-23 for 150 yards and two scores – and there’s too much talent up front to not be better.

Florida A&M threw on the North Carolina defense. Appalachian State did everything it wanted to late against it, and Georgia State was able to come up with 421 yards of total offense.

The Tar Heels are 123rd in the nation in total defense, last among ACC teams in scoring D, and not to school shame, but again … Florida A&M, Appalachian State, Georgia State.

The Irish need to get going in this. However …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why North Carolina Will Win

Maybe Notre Dame really just can’t score.

Maybe this is it. Maybe the team really is just this weak offensively, and that means it’s not going to take much for the rested Tar Heels to put this away.

QB Drake Maye is hitting everything – including a goofy barb against NC State (“People who go to State just can’t get into Carolina”) the irreversibly-depressed world labeled as “inappropriate” – making 74% of his throws with 11 touchdown passes and just one pick.

Star WR Josh Downs should be back after suffering a shoulder injury, the running game that’s been amazing should at least take some of the pressure off, and the offense that’s averaging 51 points per game should be a problem.

Along with the great O, North Carolina has another weapon – punter Ben Kiernan. The Tar Heels lead the nation in net punting. Force the Irish to go on long marches, and assume a whole lot of midfield stalls.

Week 4 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Don’t just assume Notre Dame’s offense is as awful as you think.

Forgetting that Marshall couldn’t handle Bowling Green – that’s a great D that pitched a gem in South Bend. Ohio State is Ohio State, and Cal has a defense.

Along with struggling against two mediocre teams – to be nice – and Appalachian State, the North Carolina defense isn’t forcing takeaways.

Notre Dame won’t give the ball away enough to matter, Pyne will be efficient, and the running game will start working for the first time this season in a good, grinding win for Marcus Freeman to build off of.

North Carolina vs Georgia State Game Preview

Why Georgia State Will Win

Let’s just say the North Carolina offense has been a little slow to get its 2022 season going.

It got ripped to shreds by Appalachian State in almost all phases of the wild 63-61 win – the Tar Heels allowed 40 points in the fourth quarter – with no prayer against the running game, no hope against the passing attack, and in all allowing 649 yards of total offense.

ASU QB Chase Brice is a fine player, but the UNC defense made him look like Aaron Rodgers.

Georgia State’s defense was fine in the 35-14 loss to South Carolina. It kept Spencer Rattler from getting into a groove, there wasn’t anything happening from the ground game, and it was more of a battle than the final score might indicate.

However …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why North Carolina Will Win

Darren Grainger and the Georgia State passing game struggled.

He completed just 7-of 29 passes for 111 yards with a touchdown and a pick – almost all of the yards came on two big plays – and the scoring pop wasn’t there to close out the good things the running game did.

Again, the North Carolina defense will make things easier, but the other side of the ball should be the problem.

Star Tar Heel WR Josh Downs might not be able to go, but QB Drake Maye has been on fire to start the season, the running game averaged six yards per carry against App State, and the balance and explosion should show up in Atlanta.

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Give the South Carolina defense credit for making Georgia State struggle. The Panthers were in it until late in the second half, but couldn’t break through.

At home, it’s going to have a much easier time against a North Carolina team that’s finishing off the road Sun Belt circuit before hosting Notre Dame. The defense will be a wee bit better than it was in Boone, North Carolina, but it’ll have issues with Grainger, and it will need a good second half punch to push past.

It’s not going to be the 59-17 wipeout of last year.

The Tar Heels will win – and will pull away – but once again with this team, it’ll be interesting.

North Carolina vs Appalachian State Game Preview

Why North Carolina Will Win

The North Carolina defense should be better.

The talent is in place, the transfer portal helped, and the defensive tackles are terrific. Now it all needs to come together against the Appalachian State running game.

The Mountaineers are balanced and efficient, but they need their receivers to step up right away – this is one of their biggest areas of need – but that might not be the real problem.

The defense is replacing way too many parts with five of the top seven tacklers gone. The overall production won’t fall off the map this season, but North Carolina’s offense should be able to explode. WR Josh Downs should have a big day, the running game should be fine, and …

Week 1 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Appalachian State Will Win

The North Carolina offensive line has to prove it can keep teams out of the backfield.

Appalachian State might be missing a slew of its top tacklers from last year, but the D that led the Sun Belt against the run and was great at generating tackles for loss should be dangerous again.

The Tar Heels offensive front can spring the big, gashing runs, but it was among the worst in the nation in pass protection, and this year’s version is working in almost an entirely new starting group.

North Carolina’s defensive front has to hold up better. Again, it has the talent, and it has the right parts, but it’s coming off a miserable year that got hammered on regularly.

That’s where new defensive coordinator Gene Chizik comes in, but the Appalachian State running game should still be able to rumble as much as it wants to. It all starts with …

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Saturday

What’s Going To Happen

The Appalachian State offensive line. It’s got as much talent as any in the Sun Belt.

The home game environment will play a big role, intimidation won’t be a problem – Appalachian State beat North Carolina in Chapel Hill in 2019 – and the offense should come out with an attitude right away.

Will Mountaineer QB Chase Brice keep the turnovers to a bare minimum? Even if he doesn’t the devastating group of running backs will pick up the slack in a fun shootout.

North Carolina Tar Heels Preview 2022

Oh sure, the recruiting has been great, and the games have been wild fun, but 21-17 in three seasons isn’t exactly how this was all supposed to go considering the hype going into last season, but …

It’s been lost in a big hurry that North Carolina was 5-20 in a 25 game run before the guy took over.

He’s Mack Brown.

He’s in the College Football Hall of Fame with 265 total wins and a national championship at Texas as part of a phenomenal stretch of nine straight seasons with ten or more wins in the 2000s. But there was always the knock that his teams had all the talent in the world and couldn’t quite come through outside of that one magical 2005 season.

Since taking over the North Carolina in 2019 after leaving Texas in 2013, he has put together teams as talented as any in the ACC outside of Clemson, and …

21-17. Again, the Tar Heels went 2-9 the season before Brown stepped in, but the bar was set a bit higher after what he was able to do to turn things around.

It’s been 13 years since Colt McCoy got knocked out of the BCS Championship game loss to Alabama.

Throw that 13-1 Texas team’s defeat into the mix, and Brown is now 51-39 in his last seven seasons as a head coach. That’s hardly awful, but for a guy who went 14 straight years in Austin with only one season with more than three losses, going seven campaigns in a row with four or more defeats doesn’t exactly scream trend up.

To make matters even more interesting, his defense is coming off an abysmal year and his offense is undergoing a personnel overhaul just when this is all supposed to be hitting its stride. But there’s one giant positive coming from the dud of a 2021 – there aren’t any major expectations in 2022.

Last year’s team was overhyped, and it fizzled with the tone set from the start in a sad trombone 17-10 clunker to Virginia Tech, and with double-digit losses to bad Florida State and Georgia Tech teams,

And then, with a chance to end on a high note to crank up a little momentum going into this year, out came another bad performance in a loss to South Carolina. All that did was hand Brown just his second losing season since 1989.

But his team still has a ton of talent, he changed some things up with his coaching staff – bringing aboard Gene Chizik as the Assistant Head Coach for Defense was an interesting move – the schedule couldn’t possibly be more favorable, and …

He’s still Mack Brown, and that means this team with no Clemson on the slate should set the bar at ACC Championship appearance or bust.
