North Carolina vs Virginia Tech Game Preview

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

So what’s going right with the Hokies?

It’s going to be a process before things start to come together under new head coach Brent Pry, but the defense hasn’t been bad.

West Virginia was balanced and moved with ease in the 33-10 win last week, but overall the Hokie D has been great on third downs, the secondary has been solid, and the 218 rushing yards by the Mountaineers was the first time this year anyone has been able to move on the ground.

On the flip side, the North Carolina run defense has been abysmal. Everyone is getting fat running on the Tar Heels with Appalachian State, Georgia State, and Notre Dame combining for close to 800 rushing yards with six scores.

Virginia Tech hasn’t been able to run well so far, but it has to try.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why North Carolina Will Win

Yeah, Virginia Tech’s defense has technically been okay so far, but playing Old Dominion, Boston College, and Wofford had something to do with that.

The North Carolina defense might not know the season has started, but the offensive side is rolling with ease, it’s averaging 47 points per game, and it’s averaging over 500 yards per game.

Get up fast, make Virginia Tech have to crank up the passing game, and all should be fine. Hokie QB Grant Wells might put up some yards, but the offense isn’t converting off the decent drives.

What’s Going To Happen

Can North Carolina finally have an easy game against an FBS team?

It’s the team’s own fault for not being able to do enough defensively, but Virginia Tech doesn’t have the pop to do much once the scoring starts rolling.

The Tar Heels will rely mostly on the ground game to start, and then Drake Maye and the passing attack will take over as the Hokie D gets picked apart.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

North Carolina (0-0) vs Virginia Tech (0-0) Game Preview

Why North Carolina Will Win

Has Virginia Tech been able to get its mojo back defensively?

It was good at the end of last year in the win over Virginia, but it struggled with its consistency all season long and got bombed on by North Carolina in the 56-45 Tar Heel win.

There are still plenty of decent parts returning, but the Hokie D has to prove it can overcome the personnel losses on the front six and improve, too. North Carolina might lose most of its star skill parts from last year, but it gets back QB Sam Howell. The pieces around him are fine – the O is going to work.

On the other side, the Tar Heel secondary is full of veterans, the line should get into the backfield on enough key stops to matter, and …

Week 1 College Football Expert Picks

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

Are you really so sure that North Carolina will keep this all rolling offensively just because it has Sam Howell?

Star WR Dyami Brown is a Washington Football Teamer. WR Dazz Newsome is a Chicago Bear, and the running back tandem of Javonte Williams and Michael Carter will matter in your 2021 fantasy season.

Tennessee RB Ty Chandler should rock, and Howell really is that good, but it’s not a given that the Tar Heels will get off the bus and crank up 656 yards like they did in last year’s win over the Hokies.

Virginia Tech has an offense, too.

Braxton Burmeister is a good, veteran quarterback, the receiving corps can get deep, and the running backs should be sneaky-good. The Hokie O might not put up close to 500 yards with a good balance like it did last year, but it won’t be crazy if it does.

What’s Going To Happen

It’s not going to be the high-octane offensive fun show of last year, but it might 1) be a blast of a way to start out a Friday night full of college football and 2) decide the ACC Coastal title before the season really gets going.

All the pressure is on North Carolina. It’s got the big ranking, and Virginia Tech doesn’t. It has the national superstar in Howell, and Virginia Tech doesn’t. It also has all the pressure, and Virginia Tech doesn’t.

The Hokies will play well at home, but in a back-and-forth game, Howell and the Tar Heels will sharpen up just in time to pull out a thriller.

Why North Carolina Will Win

One word when it comes to North Carolina’s 101-59 win over Notre Dame in the second round of the ACC Tournament …

YEEEEEEEEEEESH.

The Tar Heels came up with 54 rebounds, went off in the second half, and the defense locked down hard as they pulled away in the somewhat-shocking blowout.

They might be a bit hit-or-miss lately – they couldn’t guard against Marquette and failed to come through against Syracuse, but blowout Duke and Louisville and tagged Florida State – but if they play like they did against the Irish, look out.

They lead the nation in rebounding, and Virginia Tech is the second-worst rebounding team in the ACC.

The North Carolina defense might not be anything great overall, but it’s been outstanding at stopping the three lately, and the Hokies have to heat up despite not playing for a few weeks.

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

Virginia Tech is certainly rested.

No, they can’t rebound with North Carolina, but make the shots and that’s not a problem.

It hasn’t played since beating Wake Forest on February 27th, and they’re about to get on the move. They made half of their shots in the win over the Demon Deacons, were fantastic in the stunning sin over Virginia – hitting half of their threes – and they’re going to have to be hot right away.

For all of the good things the Tar Heels do, they’re a turnover machine. Virginia Tech doesn’t come up with steals, but it’ll generate a few.

What’s Going To Happen

Can North Carolina keep this going? A world-beater over the last two games against Duke and Notre Dame, now it has to step it up even more defensively.

Virginia Tech isn’t spectacular, but it’s a rock-solid team that can D up to stop the Tar Heels from the outside, but will have too many problems on the boards.

If want in on this, sign up with BetMGM

What’s Going To Happen

Pitt is sputtering with seven straight losses with an offense that’s struggling to find anything that consistently works. Wake Forest has lost four of its last six games, but it was able to shock Duke in an overtime thriller and beat Notre Dame with in the last few weeks.

The Panther offense simply doesn’t shoot well enough. It struggles from three  and isn’t good enough at generating easy points. It’s okay on the offensive glass, but it gets wiped up on the defensive boards. Wake Forest doesn’t have a powerhouse of an offensive attack, but it’ll be +5 in rebounding margin and will win on the free throw line.
