North Carolina vs Virginia Game Preview

Why North Carolina Will Win

The Virginia offense doesn’t score.

This isn’t going to flip around and become the attack of last year, and that’s going to become apparent very, very quickly against the North Carolina offense.

The Tar Heels are cranking up 470 yards or more every time out with a high-powered passing game that keeps on producing when needed. Even when it’s held in check for a while, there’s going to be a burst at some point – Virginia can’t keep up with it.

The Cavaliers have yet to score more than 20 points against an FBS team, but …

Breaking down the CFP Top 25 rankings

Why Virginia Will Win

The defense is going to be an issue for the Tar Heels.

For all of the problems on one side, the other side of the ball locked down allowing fewer than 300 yards to both Georgia Tech and Miami in low scoring fights.

The Cavaliers have enough of a running game to slow things down a bit, the pass rush should get to Drake Maye on a regular basis, and there should be just enough stops to keep this close.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

The North Carolina defense will have its issues. It’ll get run on – the Cavaliers might have their best day of the year on the ground – and it’ll be hard to break out, but it’ll happen. Two second half touchdown passes will finally let the Tar Heels breathe easier.

Again, it’s not going to be smooth for North Carolina, but Virginia won’t have that extra gear when it needs it.

Pitt at North Carolina Game Preview

Why Pitt Will Win

It’s been an up-and-down season, but that works if you’re a fan of patterns.

The Panthers have gone win-loss-win-loss in the last four games, with the success mostly depending on the steadiness of the ground game.

Things usually go well when they run for 200 yards or more – going 3-0 when they do – and it helps when they’re not turning the ball over in bunches like they did in losses to Georgia Tech and Louisville.

North Carolina was able to stuff the Virginia Tech and Miami rushing attacks, but it’s getting hammered for well over 200 yards by everyone else.

But …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 8

Why North Carolina Will Win

North Carolina is winning despite the ACC’s worst run defense struggling as much as it is.

The offense continues to rip through everyone with a highly-efficient passing game that’s averaging well over 300 yards per game, and it helps that the running game is working, too.

The Panthers are usually able to hit 150 yards on the ground without a problem – the one time they didn’t was in the loss to Notre Dame.

They might not get to 150 against Pitt, but the offense has enough firepower through the air to overcome that.

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

North Carolina’s offense will make Pitt press, and that’s where the mistakes will come.

The Panthers have turned it over eight times in the last three games and are 0-3 when giving it up multiple times. North Carolina doesn’t force turnovers, but it’ll get two in this, Drake Maye will throw for well over 300 yards, and the Tar Heels – despite the D – will keep on rolling.

North Carolina vs Duke Game Preview

Why North Carolina Will Win

The Tar Heels played a little … defense?

No, not really in the 27-24 win over Miami – they gave up 538 yards – but they held firm when they had to. It’s a low bar, but that’s the goal for the Tar Heel D – just hold serve and let the offense do the rest.

Drake Maye continues to be one of the brightest young quarterback stars in the ACC, the running game is chipping in a little to help out, and after all of the drama and all of the close calls and all of the problems on defense, the team is 5-1.

Duke couldn’t get the O going until it was way too late in a puzzling loss to Georgia The. The attack that was so good over the first month fizzled, but the bigger problem here is the lack of a pass rush to help out the secondary.

There’s a big problem when teams don’t get pressure on Maye, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Duke Will Win

The North Carolina defense. It really is the cure for offenses that need a pick-me-up.

It’s the worst in the ACC by a mile, the pass defense has issues, and overall it’s allowing 465 yards and 32 points per game.

Duke has enough of a passing attack to take advantage of it all. As long as the offense isn’t turning the ball over – and it doesn’t – it should be able to get its production back.

Keeping the chains moving and keeping Maye and company off the field is a must, but …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Duke has the one defense in the ACC that’s worse on third downs than North Carolina.

Duke will get a big day from the offense, but the defensive side that hasn’t dealt with a high-powered attack – Kansas sort of counts, but doesn’t – is about to have a long day.

Both teams got bogged down a wee bit last week. In this the points will flow in a fun back-and-forth rivalry game. North Carolina will get just a bit more out of the attack for a full 60 minutes.

Miami vs North Carolina Game Preview

Why North Carolina Will Win

The offense continues to be amazing.

The Tar Heels lead the ACC averaging 507 yards per game with a high-powered offense, Drake Maye is one of the nation’s best young quarterbacks, and it should work against a Miami defense that failed miserably the last time out.

The Hurricane pass defense gave up a slew of passing yards early in the season, and Middle Tennessee took things up a few notches with a 408-yard passing performance in a 45-31 Blue Raider win.

That’s fine – defenses struggle from time to time – but the offense didn’t do its part to keep up pace. As good as Tyler Van Dyke is, the downfield passing game isn’t there, Texas A&M and Middle Tennessee allowed the Canes to complete just 51% of their passes, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 5

Why Miami Will Win

Okay, enough stalling.

The North Carolina defense. It’s not good.

Only two teams in the ACC are allowing more than 400 yards per game. Georgia Tech is giving up 412 yards per outing, and then there’s North Carolina.

It’s giving up 451 yards per game.

It’s able to get away with it because the offense is to strong, but it’s not like the D was getting ripped apart by Georgia and USC.

Notre Dame’s offense did a whole lot of nothing before going off on the Tar Heels. Appalachian State rolled for 649 yards – and haven’t come within 200 yards of that against another FBS team since – and Georgia State had a whole lot of fun.

Virginia Tech’s miserable offense came up with 273 yards, and that still didn’t help move the needle on UNC’s defensive stats.

Miami has had two weeks to sit and stew on the loss to Middle Tennessee. The offense should be ready to go.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Miami will start with the basics. It’ll get the offensive line going, grind it out a bit, and then let Van Dyke and the passing attack start to work.

It’s not a plus to get into a shootout with the Tar Heels – they’re better equipped for a high-scoring fun fest – and every third down stop will mean the world. The UNC offense is amazing, but it doesn’t do a thing to control the clock. On the flip side, Miami is happy to keep it slow and steady.

The points will be there for both sides, but Miami – who’ll have the ball for almost 40 minutes – will get it done with one big late defensive stop to go along with the balanced offensive attack.
