Clemson vs NC State Game Preview

Why NC State Will Win

Devin Leary. Your table is ready.

The NC State quarterback pulled off the win over the Tigers last year with a brilliant 238-yard day with four touchdowns, but he has yet to get going against anyone good.

Oh sure, he took target practice against UConn and Charleston Southern, but he struggled against East Carolina and only hit the short-range throws against Texas Tech.

Clemson has an NFL defensive front, and the offense has started to put it all together, but the secondary is getting ripped.

Furman threw too easily, Louisiana Tech bombed away for over 300 yards, and Sam Hartman earned himself a job in some NFL team’s quarterback room with a 337-yard, six-touchdown day last week.

The Wolfpack defense has been every bit the wall it was expected to be. It came up with four takeaways in the 27-14 win over Texas Tech, the secondary has seven picks on the year, and the run defense is holding up well.

On the other side, the offensive line has been great in pass protection giving Leary time, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Clemson Will Win

DJ Uiagalelei is starting to ball out.

He has been much maligned for not being consistent, the offense not moving well enough, and for not being likely-star-in-waiting Cade Klubnik, but the team needed him to show up against Wake Forest and he came through large.

For all the slings and arrow, he’s hitting 64% of his passes for 1,033 yards and ten scores with just one pick – and with 169 yards and a rushing score – in four games.

Now it’s redemption time.

Leary was fantastic, the NC State defense was great, and Clemson still almost won last year even though Uiagalelei had an awful day in the 27-21 double overtime loss.

The offensive line has been good enough in pass protection, the running game has been solid, and the Clemson defensive front seven is the Clemson defensive front seven.

The secondary might be having issues, but the defensive line isn’t allowing much of anything on the ground and it’s making a slew of plays in the backfield.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

The Clemson defense is going to get it done in what should be lousy conditions. It’s not supposed to be too bad by game time, but it’ll definitely be wet out.

Leary will be good against the struggling Clemson secondary, but for the first time this year the running game will have to deal with a brick wall of a defensive front.

For all of Clemson’s sputters and coughs on offense, it’s not turning the ball over enough to matter.

No, the O won’t be held to 215 yards of total offense this time around. It won’t go off, but it’ll be good enough to let the defense take care of the rest.

NC State vs UConn Game Preview

Why UConn Will Win

The Huskies might be coming off of two blowout loses to Syracuse and Michigan, but this is going to be a process.

The running game isn’t awful. It was good over the first two weeks, and then it ran into those to Power Five teams and sputtered – it had a little success against the Orange.

The aren’t a slew of penalties to make life harder, the run defense is holding teams to four yards per carry, and the O line overall hasn’t been too bad – it’s been good in pass protection.

But …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why NC State Will Win

This is the game to try getting the offense to be more consistent. The D will take care of the rest.

Syracuse and Michigan fired at will with the passing game. Neither one took any big chances, both connected on 81% of their throws, and while Michigan didn’t go off with the ground attack, it ran for six touchdowns.

NC State’s defense hasn’t allowed anything on the ground so far, especially over the last two games, and it’s forcing a ton of mistakes with nine takeaways.

UConn doesn’t have a dangerous enough of a passing game to worry about, expect at least two takeaways, and the offense should capitalize on every opportunity.

Week 4 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Can NC State somehow go on after the brutal jab by North Carolina QB Drake Maye?

It was suggested that people who go to NC State couldn’t get into UNC, but the team will overcome the adversity with one of an easy game with both sides still trying to work out all the kinks.

The defense will dominate from the start, the offense will be balanced, and even though it hasn’t been perfect so far, NC State will be 4-0.

Texas Tech vs NC State Game Preview

Why Texas Tech Will Win

The offense keeps on moving.

It lost starting quarterback Tyler Shough to a shoulder injury in the opener against Murray State, and in stepped Donovan Smith to direct the attack in a strong, tough win over Houston.

That’s good, the passing game is clicking, and the team is winning to start the Joey McGuire era, but even bigger is the performance from the defense over the first two games.

The Red Raiders have been fantastic so far against the run, the pass defense has held up – allowing only 47% of passes to hit –  thanks to a pass rush that keeps on coming.

NC State hasn’t been quite what everyone was expecting so far – too much sputtering with the passing game, the D hasn’t generated any consistent pressure, and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why NC State Will Win

The offensive line is giving Devin Leary time.

No, the offense isn’t clicking yet like it’s supposed to – the five touchdown passes in the win over Charleston Southern wasn’t that big of a deal – but the line has yet to give up a sack, the running game isn’t too bad, and overall, it looks like a team that needed a few games to get going.

That’s why you schedule East Carolina and Charleston Southern. You can be mediocre and still be 2-0.

Okay, okay, 55-3 last week against the Buccaneers is hard to argue with.

The defense will hold up well against the Texas Tech running game, and the secondary will win its share of battles. Smith will hit a few throws and the Red Raider offense will move, but NC State will come up with a few picks to make up for it.

Week 3 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

The NC State defense is about to crank it up.

It’s taking the ball away and it’s been fine overall, but it hasn’t been as good overall as it should be.

Texas Tech will get its passing yards, but the running game won’t do enough, there will be just enough Wolfpack pressure to throw off the timing, and Leary will build off his tune-up against Charleston Southern to have a solid game.

NC State vs Charleston Southern Game Preview

Why Charleston Southern Will Win

NC State is coming off a rough Saturday. It got by East Carolina, but it was saved by missed kicks in an ugly 21-20 win.

The passing game wasn’t special, the running game didn’t do much, and overall it was a struggle.

Charleston Southern had its own issues in the 52-38 loss to Western Carolina, but the defense forced four takeaways, the passing game was strong, and there’s a shot it can catch the Wolfpack looking ahead to Texas Tech.

But …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why NC State Will Win

The worst thing to happen to Charleston Southern is that the team that’s supposed to be the ACC title contender looked that bad.

Let’s just say there’s some sharpening up to do, and this is the game to do it.

NC State walked out of East Carolina with a win, but Devin Leary and the passing game struggled to get things moving, there weren’t any points in the second half, and moving the chains was a struggle. Throw in a few injuries, and this is a big game for the team.

The Buccaneer defense wasn’t even close against Western Carolina – it couldn’t stoop anything, especially through the air, and now Leary and company will give it a full go.

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

It’s not going to inspire any confidence quite yet, but NC State will start looking and playing the part. Charleston Southern isn’t going to be a speed bump, but it will get behind early and won’t be able to make enough of a push to make this interesting.

It’ll keep throwing and come up with a few points, though.

NC State vs East Carolina Game Preview

Why NC State Will Win

The offense should be explosive – at least with the passing game – but it’s the defensive side that’s going to be the star.

The linebacking corps will be among the best in the nation, forget about running consistently on the from three, and the secondary has as much talent and upside as any in the ACC.

East Carolina’s offense will be good, and the passing game will be occasionally great, but there’s a question mark about the pass protection that’s going to have a long day against a wave of Wolfpack linebackers.

Week 1 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why East Carolina Will Win

The Pirate defense should be good enough to hold up.

The offense has a good rotation of running backs to at least give it a shot, and QB Holton Ahlers is a seasoned veteran who won’t be fazed in an ACC team coming into town.

Yes, the offensive line is going to be a concern until it starts working, but the transfer portal was a huge help, the receiving corps was upgraded, and – back to the other side – the defense that improved so much last year is now full of veterans who know what they’re doing.

The key will be to hold on. It’ll get hit for a ton of yards, but as long as it can bend without breaking too often, this can be interesting.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Saturday

What’s Going To Happen

Don’t put anything past East Carolina at home.

This is one of those programs that finds a way to do big things from time to time when big name teams come to Greenville.

The Pirates weren’t able to beat South Carolina last year, but it came up with a strong game in the 20-17 loss. They rocked SMU at the end of 2020, almost got Cincinnati in 2019, and blew out North Carolina in 2018.

They’ll hang around for a while, but the NC State defense will settle in and take over in the second half. Devin Leary and the Wolfpack offense won’t be sharp right away, but he’ll hit two big passes to open things up.

25 Winningest Programs To Not Make The College Football Playoff

College Football Playoff: 25 winningest teams to not make the tournament

What are the 25 winningest programs to not make the College Football Playoff? Here are the top schools in the CFP era to miss out on the fun.

Cincinnati and Michigan were able to make the College Football Playoff last season. Their doors might have been blown off by Alabama and Georgia, respectively, but they at least brought some new energy to the mini-tournament.

The College Football Playoff has only been around for eight seasons and just 13 schools – Alabama, Cincinnati, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Washington – have played in it and just five won it all.

That means 90% of the FBS college football programs haven’t been in the post-season – at least the version that matters – since this grand experiment started.

That’s the equivalent of only 36 college basketball programs making the NCAA Tournament over the last eight years – which is a good idea, by the way, but I digress.

What college football programs were able to win a lot of games over the last eight years without the playoff payoff? 25 have won 60 or more games in eight seasons – averaging 7.5 a year, but it’s better than that considering some played a short schedule in 2020 – without getting the call.

If you didn’t get to 60 victories – no Texas, or Tennessee, or Nebraska, Michigan State, or North Carolina – you don’t get on the list. So with that, here are the 25 winningest teams to not make the College Football Playoff.

25. USC

Wins Since 2014: 60
Best Season in CFP Era: 2017, 11-3, Pac-12 champion, Rose Bowl win
Realistic Chance To Make College Football Playoff This Season: Strong

Bottom Line: USC might be last on this list, but it’s got the best shot of going to the College Football Playoff this year with Lincoln Riley and a loaded all-star team ready to roll. The 2020 team would’ve had a case for the CFP if it won the Pac-12 title to finish 6-0 – it lost to Oregon, but no unbeaten Power Five champ has ever been left out. It’s been a disappointing run since going 12-1 in 2008. That’s all about to change.

T22. NC State

Wins Since 2014: 61
Best Season in CFP Era: 2017, 9-4, Sun Bowl win
Realistic Chance To Make College Football Playoff This Season: Possible

Bottom Line: The Wolfpack have been strongly consistent since Dave Doeren took over, but they haven’t been able to get a turn in the ACC Championship mix – being in the same division with Clemson has something to do with that. This should be his best team yet, and if it can somehow get by the Tigers on the road, there’s a real shot at going 12-1 with an ACC Championship and a CFP shot. That’s a massive if, though.

T22. Miami

Wins Since 2014: 61
Best Season in CFP Era: 2017, 10-3, ACC Championship loss, Orange Bowl loss
Realistic Chance To Make College Football Playoff This Season: Slim

Bottom Line: Miami flirted with something fun in 2017 with a 10-0 start before losing the last three games. However, had it beaten Clemson in the ACC Championship – it lost 38-3 – it would’ve been in the CFP. This year’s schedule is too tough for a reloading team – with road games at Clemson and Texas A&M – but new head coach Mario Cristobal might just restore the glory in a hurry.

T22. Western Michigan

Wins Since 2014: 61
Best Season in CFP Era: 2016, 13-1, MAC champion, Cotton Bowl loss
Realistic Chance To Make College Football Playoff This Season: None

Bottom Line: Now-Minnesota head coach PJ Fleck led the way to a phenomenal 13-0 regular season with a MAC title in 2016, and it still wasn’t enough to get near the College Football Playoff. The Broncos have been good ever since, but they haven’t been able to come close to repeating the glory. They’ll be strong this season, but even if they can win at Michigan State and against Pitt – and can run through the MAC unbeaten – it still shouldn’t be enough for a CFP shot.
