ACC Football Basketball School Rankings: Hoops and Helmets 2019-2020

Which ACC schools had the best and worst years in the two major sports – football and men’s basketball?

Which ACC schools had the best and worst years in the two major sports – football and men’s basketball? Which fan bases got the glory, and which ones didn’t have any fun?

Contact @PeteFiutak

On the field and court – whose fans had the most fun?

Of course every school has sports outside of the big two that matter and generate revenue, but when it comes to what athletic departments need, it’s really all about college football and men’s basketball.

Which ACC schools had the best and worst seasons?

Here’s how these rankings work.

1) The top-ranked schools with teams that went to a bowl game and would’ve played in the NCAA Tournament.

2) The next group had stronger football seasons and were okay in basketball. The superstar basketball schools get credit – that’s obviously a huge deal in the ACC – but football is the bigger revenue generator.

3) One or the other. Usually there’s a disparity with one good season in one sport an a clunker in the other. It’s sort of a catch-all before …

4) The disasters. No bowl game, there wouldn’t have been a trip to the NCAA Tournament, no fun.

The worst-to-best ACC schools in 2019-2020 in college football and college basketball …

ACC Hoops and Helmets: Losers In Both Sports

These schools suffered the indignity of failing to come up with a winning season in either of the two major sports. The fans didn’t get to have any fun.

North Carolina (5-6) vs. NC State (4-7) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why North Carolina Will Win

NC State is bad at college football.

The defense isn’t taking the ball away – just seven turnovers on the year – the passing attack is painfully inefficient, and the team is on a five-game losing streak with its best win of the season over … Ball State.

The only time the Wolfpack secondary has had any success this year was against teams that spent the whole time running the ball, and even Georgia Tech ended up throwing three touchdown passes in last week’s 28-26 game.

North Carolina’s passing game isn’t consistent and it’s not always sharp, but it’s effective enough to put up big numbers when Sam Howell gets on a roll. When the thing is working, he’s able to connect on big plays and stretch the field enough to keep the pressure on.

Howell has thrown three touchdown passes or more in five of the last six games. NC State has allowed three touchdown passes ore more in each of its last five games.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why NC State Will Win

NC State has the most problems with the teams that run well. That’s not really North Carolina.

The Tar Heels have been effective at times – 4-0 this year when running for over 200 yards – but that’s now how their bread is baked. They’ve run or nine touchdowns on the season, and five of them came last week against Mercer – they didn’t run or a score in the previous four games.

NC State has enough of a pass rush to get to Howell on a regular basis, and overall, the run defense hasn’t been all that miserable. The D should be just good enough to keep the team in the game as long as the offense can keep up the pace.

North Carolina is just sloppy enough and mistake-prone enough to not run away with this.

What’s Going To Happen

NC State will make it a fight in a rivalry game at home, but that will last only so long. The offense won’t be consistent enough and the passing game won’t be strong enough to come through on the late drives needed to pull this off.

North Carolina likes to play close, tight games, and this one won’t be any different.

NC (4-6) vs. Georgia Tech (2-8) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why NC State Will Win

The Georgia Tech offense simply isn’t doing enough consistently well to move the chains.

Even this late in the season, there’s nothing the O can count on and there’s still little to no passing game. Worst yet, when the team is gets its opportunities to score and gets into the red zone, it’s whiffing.

Dead last in the nation in red zone offense. the Yellow Jackets have come away empty in eight of their last 16 chances. The kicking game is struggling, there are too many turnovers, and the offense bogs down without any go-to big play element to turn to.

For all of NC State’s problems, the defensive line isn’t that awful. The run defense is giving up just 128 yards per game, and Georgia Tech hasn’t been able to get above 100 yards in two of its last three games, and hasn’t hit 50% of its passes in five of its last seven outings.

However …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Georgia Tech Will Win

NC State doesn’t take the ball away.

For all the pressure the defensive front is able to generate, it’s not leading to mistakes with just five takeaways on the season with none in the last six games.

Georgia Tech needs all the help it can get.

As mediocre as the Yellow Jacket offense has been, and as much of a problem as it has scoring, NC State is having just as many issues. It’s moving the ball, and it’s coming up with yards, but it can’t put the biscuit in the basket with 16 points or fewer in four of the last six games, and 24 points or fewer in each of the last six.

NC State is the exact right team for Georgia Tech to deal with at home. It’s not going to bust out with a big offensive performance to change the dynamic right away, and it’s not going to run well enough to control the clock.

The Pack have just one rushing touchdown in the last six games, and they’re not going to plow though this defensive front for a 200-yard outing.

[lawrence-related id=500899]

What’s Going To Happen

It’s going to be about which side can get the right, fortunate breaks and capitalize on them. Neither team will do anything special offensively, and neither one will be able to take over to ever feel comfortable.

It won’t be pretty, but Georgia Tech will take it by being a +2 in turnover margin, and it’ll need the mistakes.

Louisville (5-4) vs. NC State (4-5) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Louisville Will Win

A bowl game is right there for the taking.

After all of the issues and all of the problems of last year, the Cardinals have three more shots – after losing last week at Miami – to get that sixth win. Syracuse should be the backstop next week, but NC State is there to take down.

This isn’t the Wolfpack team of recent seasons. There’s no consistent offense, the passing game isn’t working, and the D isn’t coming up with enough big plays. State is dead last in the nation in takeaways with just five.

On the other side, Micale Cunningham is turning it loose. The Cardinals got rocked by Clemson and Miami over the last few weeks, but he’s averaging close to 12 yards per pass for an offense that’s always pushing and always attacking. NC State’s secondary has allowed 295 yards or more in five of the lat six games.

The Cardinal offense is humming, but …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why NC State Will Win

The offensive line is going to be in for a long day.

For all of NC State’s problems, its pass rush continues to be incredible and it’s able to camp out in opposing backfields on a regular basis.

Louisville is dead last in the ACC in tackles for loss allowed, getting jumped on by the ACC defenses that can crank up the consistent pressure. State isn’t forcing takeaways off of all the plays behind the line, but it’ll be annoying enough to bother Cunningham and stall the Cardinal ground game.

Offensively, this has to be the game for freshman QB Devin Leary to break out a bit. He hasn’t been accurate, he’s been struggling to keep up the pace, and the O has gone nowhere so far, but the Louisville pass defense gives up plays in chunks. The Pack have to keep pushing the ball down the field and take its shots.

[lawrence-related id=499899]

What’s Going To Happen

The Louisville offense will be too much for the Pack.

The State offense simply isn’t working well enough without any one thing it can rely on, but it’s still going to move the ball a bit to keep up in what will be an interesting game for both sides.

The Cardinals will get the big scoring drive in a few key spots in the second half, and NC State won’t.
