Virginia Tech vs NC State Game Preview

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

To try being nice about it …

It continues to be a rough run under first year head coach Brent Pry, but the team has been competitive enough at least push Miami a few weeks ago and now have two weeks off to build on.

The defense is battling. It’s the best in the ACC on third downs and isn’t awful against the run – that all comes from being strong at getting into the backfield.

NC State is still smarting from the loss to Syracuse, it has to try pushing on with QB Devin Leary banged up, and the other side doesn’t generate enough of a pass rush to be a problem for the struggling Hokie offensive front.

But …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 8

Why NC State Will Win

Virginia Tech doesn’t score.

It’s been a struggle against everyone – who scores just ten points against North Carolina? There’s no ground game, the passing attack isn’t getting anything moving, and closing out decent drives with points is like  pulling teeth.

Virginia Tech had two weeks off, but so did the NC State defense that’s bene struggling a bit against the run, but won’t have any issues with that in this.

The Hokies can’t move the chains – struggling to average three years per carry is part of that – and on there other side, the D isn’t coming up with enough takeaways to help the O.

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Be conservative, grind it out, and NC State should be fine.

No, this hasn’t been the season the team was hoping for with two losses in the last three games, but everything will get back on track with a rejuvenated defense holding firm from the start.

The Wolfpack are 5-0 when hitting 100 yards rushing and 0-2 when they don’t. They’ll hit 100 without a problem.

Syracuse vs NC State Game Preview

Why NC State Will Win

The offense might not be as explosive as last year’s version, but it’s finding a way to keep things moving.

The passing game was decent in the loss to Clemson, the running game took over in the win against Florida State, and it all works in a system that got the team here at 5-1.

Keep the turnovers to a bare minimum – the O is good for one in this – the style controls the clock, and it’s all up to the D to take care of the rest.

Syracuse hasn’t seen any sort of a defense like this yet. Purdue’s is close, but it’s going to be tough throwing on a secondary that’s been the most effective in the ACC so far. But …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Syracuse Will Win

The Syracuse defense is currently No. 1 in the ACC.

Granted, that’s partly because of the schedule – more on that in a moment – but the pass rush is great, the run D has been a brick wall, and again, NC State isn’t high-powered and hasn’t put up points in bunches against anyone with a pulse.

The Orange have their style. Sean Tucker was left in WAY too long in a scrimmage against Wagner, but he had two weeks to freshen up, the team is rested while the Wolfpack are coming off tough battles against Clemson and Florida State, and the style of play might work.

As long as the Syracuse O line can hold up – NC State doesn’t have much of a pass rush – QB Garrett Shrader and Tucker should be able to do what they want.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Is Devin Leary okay? The NC State quarterback hurt his shoulder and is questionable, but can he really go? No matter what, this is where the kicking game comes in.

Syracuse might be unbeaten, but it took a clutch late throw to get by Purdue, and that’s been about it. Beating Virginia and Louisville isn’t that big a deal this year, and it’s been a huge help to only leave home once so far – going to UConn isn’t really a true dangerous road game.

NC State is going to power its way through.

The defense that got ripped up by the FSU running game last week will have a few problems with Tucker, but there will be plenty of bending without breaking.

The offensive side won’t be pretty – assume Leary isn’t a go for now – and it’ll get a huge game out of Christopher Dunn. The veteran kicker has yet to miss this year.

Florida State vs NC State Game Preview

Why Florida State Will Win

The Seminoles need to get the running game going again.

They struggled on the ground in the 31-21 loss to Wake Forest last week with the lowest total of the season – 112 yards – partly because the passing game took over. NC State has an amazing run defense, but the carries have to keep coming.

The Florida State running game is the trickle that leads to the waterfall. The passing game is steady and solid, but the attack works when the big dashes are there. The offense can be patient for the big plays if the defense does its job.

The FSU pass rush is great, the pass defense hasn’t been bad, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 5

Why NC State Will Win

Can the NC State run defense hold up?

Clemson was able to pound and pound and pound on the NC State D last week in a 30-20 win. It ran a season-high 38 times for 145 yards – the most the Wolfpack allowed all year – and FSU was held to under 140 yards against LSU and Wake Forest.

No, the State offense hasn’t been as dominant as it should be and it hasn’t been all the explosive, but there’s a nice system in place. There aren’t a slew of turnovers – the seven have been spread out over the five games – and the defense takes care of the rest.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

NC State will bounce back fast.

There’s nothing all that pretty with the Wolfpack style, but it’s effective. They’ll own the lines, be good against the run, and they’ll win enough third down moments to keep the momentum.

Florida State will get a good day out of QB Jordan Travis, but again, it needs to run well to win. There will be a few good dashes on a couple of scoring drives, but there won’t be enough of them.
