Post Game Recap: Texas A&M gets back in the win column with a 79-52 victory over HCU

Hayden Hefner hits a career high as he leads the Aggies past the HCU Huskies in a lopsided victory

Texas A&M (8-3) hosted the HCU Huskies (2-9) on Friday night at Reed Arena and came out with a decisive win to end their two-game skid.

Both teams had a hard time at the beginning of the game making a bucket not allowing any squad to take a dominant lead. Then, finally, after about 10 minutes in, the Aggies ratcheted up the defense, and Hayden Hefner knocked down seven straight points for a double-digit lead at 19-9.

Right when it looked as if A&M was going to blow the game wide open, HCU had some timely buckets as the Aggie committed a few senseless turnovers. The shooting woes continued for the Maroon & White, but they were able to slash to the basket late in the half for some shots from the charity stripe going 15-20.

The star of the opening 20 minutes was Hefner, who led the team with 13 points, and some smothering defense allowed them to go on an 18-3 run while Wade Taylor IV spent most of the half on the bench. The Aggies held HCU to under 27% shooting, taking a 40-21 lead into the locker room.

The second half started with more of the same, with Hefner hitting a few early shots and Andersson Garcia being a monster on the glass, giving the Aggies multiple second-chance points.

Garcia and Hefner guided A&M to an easy victory as both Aggies hit career numbers. Even though they shot poorly, their ability to get to the free-throw line and their signature rebounding really helped extend the lead to 20+. The reserves started to shuffle in and out during the remaining five minutes as they spent some clock working on some offensive sets.

The only thing that didn’t slow down was the defense of A&M as the Huskies were limited to 33% shooting and grabbed a massive 22 offensive rebounds. Hefner led all scorers with a career-high 24 points on very efficient shooting, while Garcia barely missed out on a double-double and logged 9 points and 19 rebounds. Taylor had a quiet 10 points, but Buzz Williams opted to rest him most of the game.

With the win, A&M snapped a two-game winning streak and got numerous bench players in the game during the 79-62 victory over the HCU Huskies.

Below are the Aggie critical contributors from the game:

Hayden Hefner:  24 points (career-high)

Andersson Garcia:  9 points / 19 rebounds (career-high)

Jace Carter:  10 points / 12 rebounds

NOTE: Tyrece Radford did not suit up for the game

‘..we’ve got to figure out how to be more consistent.. ‘ Buzz Williams speaks ahead of Texas A&M vs. HCU

Here’s what Texas A&M Head Coach Buzz Williams had to say during the HCU matchup preview.

The Aggie Basketball team will return home, hosting a struggling HCU team on Friday.

Most of the press conference touched upon the team’s state after the past few games and where they need to be when conference play starts in January. When they finally got to Friday’s opponent, head coach Buzz Williams made sure to point out how good HCU is at their Rim shot selection.

“They are third in the United States in Rim shot selection
which I think we’ve played a lot of good teams.. I think as of today we’ve played as many quad One games as anybody in the
country and we’ve seen a lot of unique styles. A few of them have been really good at the rim. None of them have been ranked as high as Houston Christian at the rim.”

The Aggies will have an easier game on paper, but Coach Buzz knows they have to get better across the board. Below, you can watch the full weekly presser Q&A with Coach Buzz Williams

Texas A&M will look to snap its two-game skid against HCU at Reed Arena

On Friday night, the Aggie Basketball team will host the HCU Huskies at Reed Arena.

Texas A&M (7-4) will face an old foe, the HCU Huskies, at Reed Arena on Friday at 7 PM CST.

The Aggies are currently on a two-game losing streak but showed much promise in the second half of the game against the top-ranked Houston Cougars. Wade Taylor IV looked every bit like the SEC Player of the Year, and the defense stepped up significantly. One thing about college sports is that not all losses are equal, and even though the Aggies fell to the Cougars, they still received multiple votes in the USA Today Coaches Poll.

HCU has its issues on the year, sitting at 2-8 with a -12.2 scoring margin. However, they have the three Huskies that score in the double digits. The Aggies will need to keep an eye on Michael Imariagbe as he is averaging 12 points and 9 rebounds a game, along with being their top shot blocker.

In the ten matchups between the two teams, the Aggies have won every single one. The games through the 70s & 80s were more competitive contests but with A&M being the ultimate victor. The last meeting was anything but competitive, with the Maroon & White sprinting away with a 73-39 win at home.

PLAYERS to watch:

Wade Taylor IV – 18.6 PTS / 4.8 AST / 2.3 STL

Henry Coleman – 12.6 PTS / 9.1 TOT

SEC names Aggie guard Wade Taylor IV Player of the Week

Texas A&M junior guard Wade Taylor IV in named the SEC Player of the Week after a strong week of play

Texas A&M Basketball Junior guard Wade Taylor IV was almost unstoppable in the second half of the Aggie game against arguably the team in the nation, the No. 4 ranked Houston Cougars. After an up-and-down start to the season and teams keying in on him, Taylor seemed to be finding his stride.

The SEC recognized the junior’s production after the big week by naming him SEC Player of the Week. Below is the excerpt from the release from the SEC officials:

Texas A&M guard Wade Taylor IV, a 6-foot, 175-pound junior from Dallas, Texas, had 34 points, four assists, three rebounds, and three steals against No. 4 Houston. Taylor single-handedly out-scored the Cougars 17-6 over a six-minute span to knot the score at 63-63 with 1:30 remaining. He finished the game just shy of his career high with 34 points, including a career-best six 3-pointers. Twenty-six of his points came in the second half

Best Photos: Top Aggie performances from Week 15 of the NFL season

Texas A&M was well represented in Week 15 of the NFL, and we have some of the best photos for you to check out

We are now nearing the end of the regular season, and playoff pictures are starting to take shape. As we look forward to the rest of the games this week, I’d like to take some time to recognize a few top week 15 performances from Aggies in the NFL.

Defensive lineman Justin Madubuike got another sack, extending his streak to an NFL-tying 11 games. His 12 sacks on the season put him in the top ten in the league through 14 games with the Ravens. Here are his stats from Sunday’s win over the Jacksonville Jaguars

  • 1 tackles / 1 sack / 4 QB hits

All-Pro wide receiver Mike Evans moved up in the record books on Sunday, catching his 92nd career touchdown catch. That tied him with Gronk and Davante Adams on the All-time touchdown list. Below are his stats from the 34-20 win over the Green Bay Packers

  • 4 catches / 57 yards / 23.1 avg / 1 TD

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell makes his second appearance on the list as the Lions are poised to win the NFC North. After a few shaky weeks, the Lions roared back in impressive fashion, beating the Broncos on Saturday.

  • 42-17 win over the Carolina Panthers
  • 10-4 (1st NFC North)

Honorable Mention: Tyrel Dodson

  • 8 tackles / 0.5 sacks / 1 QB hit

Another great week for these former Aggies, and you can check out some of the best photos from week 15.

Texas A&M sophomore DL Shemar Stewart set to return to College Station for 2024 season

He’s Back! Aggies sophomore defensive lineman Shemar Stewart will be returning to College Station for the 2024 season.

In a huge announcement, Texas A&M sophomore defensive lineman Shemar Stewart will be returning to College Station next season.

According to Texas Aggies United, the official name, image, and likeness partner of Texas A&M Athletics, Stewart will be “back for more” in 2024.

Stewart is a man among boys, standing at 6-foot-6 and weighing 285 pounds. He is a native of Miramar, Florida, and graduated from Monsignor Pace Academy in 2022.

As a true freshman, Stewart appeared in all 12 games for the Aggies and made six starts. He recorded 23 tackles, 3.5 TFLs and 1.5 sacks last year. He earned the Defensive Top Newcomer award during the annual team banquet.

This season, Stewart played in 11 games but saw a dip in his production. The sophomore logged 10 tackles, 2 TFLs, and 1.5 sacks. However, he did recover a return of a blocked kick for a touchdown during the season.

Texas A&M begins the 2024 season at home against Notre Dame on Aug. 31.

Watch: New Aggie Football S&C Coach previews what’s in store when he takes over

New Texas A&M football S&C coach, Tommy Moffitt sits down with the Host of SNAPS to talk ball and what he can bring to Aggieland

New Aggie Football coach Mike Elko is slowly assembling his staff with a mixture of Duke assistants, current staff, and poaching from other programs. A huge position of need was an upgrade to the teams’ health as, over the Jimbo era never seemed to keep his top contributors on the field.

In the early days of the Elko, takeover rumors swirled that he would bring lauded Duke Strength and Conditioning coach David Feeley, which was well received. We found out very shortly after that report that Feeley, in fact, was not going to follow Elko to Aggieland.

That “loss” led to the hire of long-time LSU strength coach Tommy Moffitt and has been seen as a homerun hire that should pay off immediately. Moffitt recently sat down with SNAPS host Aaron Murray and T-Bob Hebert to discuss what he’s been up to and how to take A&M to the next level.

NOTE: There are some swear words used during the interview. So, take caution if listening out loud.

Aggie Pitching is in good hands with top assistant Max Wiener

New Aggie pitching coach Max Wiener is named as one of the top assistants in college baseball.

There is no doubt that the new pitching coach is already an asset to Coach Jim Schlossnagle’s staff, with multiple players expressing how much they enjoy his coaching style. Stanford transfer Braden Montgomery said as much earlier in the year.

Baseball America laid out its top ten hottest assistants on no part and Max Wiener has a well-earned spot. Below is only part of why he made the list:

During his time with Seattle, Weiner played a key role in developing several of the Mariners high-profile pitching prospects. Despite his age, Weiner’s knowledge and philosophies will go a long way in helping Texas A&M’s pitching staff both this year and beyond. Weiner is on track to be in play for a future head coaching position.

We can’t wait to see how much the pitching improves has an extremely inconsistent performance across the board last season.

Best Photos: Texas A&M vs Houston Cougars

Photos: Here are some of the best photos from Saturday’s game against the Houston Cougars

Texas A&M (7-3) put up a strong second-half fight to get back in the game late against the Houston Cougars (11-0) on Saturday afternoon but ultimately lost 70-66 at the Toyota Center.

Coach Buzz acknowledged that the change in defense at the end might have tipped their hand a little bit, but he will always believe in his team.

“We played a lot bigger today in hopes we could participate in the physicality of the game and have a chance on the glass. Because of that, we really can’t disguise who is going to shoot the ball for us. Some of our late-game execution was pretty good, to be honest.”

With their fourth loss early in the season, the Aggies still look like a competitive team, battling perhaps the best team in college basketball down to the final possession.

Texas A&M will return to Reed Arena next Friday to host HCU at 7:00 PM CST.

Below, you can check out some of the best Saturday game photos.
