Texas A&M baseball coach Jim Schlossnagle recaps SEC series win vs. No. 17 Georgia

“I don’t know if I’ve ever heard of 17 runs being scored in the first inning of a game, or even close to that. I was proud of our team.”

The Texas A&M baseball team scored 19 unanswered runs to win the first game of a doubleheader against Georgia on Saturday at Blue Bell Park.

With a 5-2 victory on Friday night, the No. 1 Aggies won the SEC series versus the No. 17 Bulldogs. After the games on Saturday, Texas A&M head coach Jim Schlossnagle spoke to the media.

“If I knew, then we would’ve came back in the second game today. It was amazing, obviously, we had the South Carolina game where we came back 9-0 but I don’t know if I’ve ever heard of 17 runs being scored in the first inning of a game, or even close to that,” Schlossnagle said. “I was proud of our team. Frustrated because you want to win the last one and get an opportunity to. You’ve got to give credit to their starter today, (Kolten) Smith, in the second game, wow he was awesome. Really good, thank goodness he didn’t come into the game up 9-0. Then they had the guy close the game, who has been a starter, so he was able to kinda air it out. I’m proud of our team, it’s been a long two days. It says a lot about Georgia’s team about what they did in the second game. I’m looking forward to some rest.”

Texas A&M baseball coach Jim Schlossnagle discusses SEC series opening win vs. No. 17 Georgia

“I thought this was a very well played baseball game by both teams,” he recalled. “We happened to get a few more swings than they did.”

Amid incoming inclement weather, Texas A&M baseball coach Jim Schlossnagle was able to guide the No. 1 Aggies to a 5-2 win against No. 17 Georgia on Friday night at Blue Bell Park.

“I thought this was a very well played baseball game by both teams. We happened to get a few more swings than they did. I thought both teams pitched really well, especially given the conditions. When the few mistakes were made, they were hit and they made maybe one or two more than we did. It was an awesome game, Georgia played good, was super physical and was super impressed by their pitching staff too,” Schlossnagle recalled. “(Prager) did awesome. The whole theme through the whole weekend is the wind is blowing out and they’re a great team, so what are you going to do about it? There’s nothing you can do about it, all you can do is execute pitches.

“The team that throws the most strikes in the weekend will probably win the series.”

Texas A&M relief pitcher Evan Aschenbeck makes NCBWA midseason watchlist

Texas A&M’s ace relief pitcher Evan Aschenbeck finds himself on NCBWA Stopper of the Year watchlist

Earlier this week the National Collegiate Writer Association (NCBWA) announced their midseason watchlist for their Stopper of the Year award. Among the 59 relief pitchers on the list Texas A&M senior left-hander pitcher Evan Aschenbeck earned a spot again after being named to the preseason before the season.

In 17 appearances Aschenbeck has recorded four wins and six saves across 40.1 innings. He has been head coach Jim Schlossnagle’s go-to arm when he needs someone to get a game back under A&M’s control. His six saves are good enough to have him tied for the No. 1 spot in the SEC and his 1.70 ERA, .190 opposing batting average, with 51 strikeouts cements him as one of the best closers in the business.

Texas A&M will begin a three-game home series on Friday at 6 p.m. at Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park versus No. 17 Georgia.

No. 1 Texas A&M baseball team announces starting rotation for SEC series vs. No. 17 Georgia

Texas A&M head baseball Coach Jim Schlossnagle has names the starting rotation for the series against Georgia.

After another midweek win and still holding a unanimous No. 1 ranking, Texas A&M (36-5, 13-5) will face No. 17 Georgia (30-10, 9-9) in another tough Top 25 SEC series. The Aggies are off to their best start in two decades and look to keep the momentum going as they host the Bulldogs this weekend.

For the first time this season, we have Mr. “TBA” entering the rotation after being a mainstay before the hiring of Max Wiener. This doesn’t mean Justin Lampkin won’t start game three, but Coach Jim Schlossnagle is keeping his options open depending on how the series goes through the first two games.

Here is that lineup:

Texas A&M will begin a three-game home series on Friday at 6 p.m. at Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park versus No. 17 Georgia.

No. 1-ranked Texas A&M baseball drops Game 3 vs. No. 14 Alabama

No. 1-ranked Texas A&M failed to outscore No, 14 Alabama, falling 10-9 in Game 3 of the series

No. 1-ranked Texas A&M flexed its muscle on Friday during the double-header vs. No. 14 Alabama in Tuscaloosa, earning a 10-5 comeback win in Game 1 and an 18-9 home run fest in Game 2, but failed to complete the sweep on Saturday afternoon.

Falling 10-9, starting pitcher Justin Lamkin has struggled on the mound, allowing five runs in just 1.2 innings pitched while earning a no-decision in the loss. Creating another hole to start the game, an Alabama grand slam in the second led to a 5-0 deficit before freshman phenom Gavin Grahovic got things going at the plate with an RBI single.

Later in the fourth, Grahovic continued to make an impact, hitting a base-clearing double to bring the score within one at 6-5. Adding another run off a solo shot, the Crimson Tide changed pitchers, resulting in a Travis Chesnut triple, driving Ali Camarillo home to tie the game at 7, followed by Jace LaViolette’s 20th home run of the year to take an 8-7 lead in the bottom of the fifth.

After tying the game at 8 in the sixth, Alabama kept the Aggies at bay until Caden Sorrell’s sac fly in the seventh to take their final lead of the game, until the Crimson Tide scored two more runs at the bottom of the frame to earn a much-needed victory in SEC play.

Texas A&M will return to Blue Bell Park on Tuesday, April 23, to face Houston at 6:00 p.m. CT. The game will air on SEC+.

Note: Jace LaViolette became the first Texas A&M baseball player to hit 20 home runs in consecutive seasons.

Final stats: Gavin Grahovic had two hits and four RBI, and Jace LaViolette had one hit and three RBI.

NCBWA names Texas A&M RHP Chris Cortez as one of the Howser Trophy National Players of the Week

Texas A&M junior pitcher Chris Cortez was named the NCBWA Pitcher of the Week after a going 2-0 on the week

Texas A&M pitcher Chris Cortez earn his second player of the week honor with The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) naming their Howser Trophy National Players of the Week.

Cortez was named the pitcher of the week after a solid week of work in the midweek game and his relief appearance in game three against Vanderbilt.

The NCBWA recognized the junior’s production after the big week by naming him one of the Howser Trophy National Players of the Week. Below is the release excerpt from their website:

“Cortez, who earned his first career weekly honor, was brilliant in relief for Texas A&M as the junior tossed 8.1 scoreless innings, struck out a league-best 15 batters and logged a 2-0 record. In Tuesday’s win over UTSA, the Las Vegas, Nevada, native struck out seven over four scoreless frames as the Aggies completed the comeback. On Sunday, the junior calmed the early surge from No. 6 Vanderbilt and delivered 4.1 scoreless innings to go along with a career-high tying eight strikeouts. Cortez also only allowed three hits and two walks in his two appearances.

The two victories improved Cortez to 5-1 on the year and lowered his ERA to 2.32. The junior also upped his strikeout total to 47 in only 31 innings”

‘We play to a standard, not a scoreboard’: Texas A&M RHP Chris Cortez recaps sweep of Vanderbilt

“It’s a luxury that we have guys that go out there and eat up innings. We have a lot more guys in the bullpen who can help the team win.”

Texas A&M junior right-handed pitcher Chris Cortez has been lights out as of late, and his success can be attributed to a new mindset of having fun on a game to game basis.

“The Tuesday game has nothing to do with today. I was happy about Tuesday but I’ve moved on from it. I know the best version of myself is having fun and it all starts in the bullpen. When I’m having fun, that’s when I’m at my best,” Cortez explained to the media on Sunday. “I don’t look at the scoreboard. Like Schloss says, ‘We play to a standard, not a scoreboard.’ We go one pitch at a time and that’s all I was saying. I didn’t know what the score was, what inning we’re in, I was barely paying attention to our hitters. I’m just focused on doing my job.

“I think it’s a luxury that we have guys that can go out there and eat up innings. But if they aren’t having their day, we have a lot more guys in the bullpen who can go out there and help the team win.”
