Sorry if this take sucks, it’s not my fault …

I’m not used to a conference that calls itself the Big 12 having 12 teams in it.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01f1343a1wt7q817p7 player_id=none image=https://collegefootballnews.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

At least these four schools can get on base.

We now live in a world with a college conference that goes from Utah to Florida, Ohio to Texas, and a whole lot of places in between.

The Big 12 formally asked BYU, Cincinnati, Houston, and UCF to join, the four accepted, and now the conference that lost Texas and Oklahoma to the SEC has found a way to stay alive, viable, and in a few ways, stronger.

So what does it mean, what’s next, and how is this all going to work?

1. Remember, this is about business and not sports. The fun part is talking about the possibilities of the new Big 12 as a sports league, but it’s really about how the conference can move forward after losing its two superstars.

Think of this like Moneyball. You can’t replace Giambi and Damon – you can’t replace Texas and Oklahoma. Those two are mega-revenue monsters that aren’t out there for the Big 12 to grab from other Power Five leagues. However, now the 12-team conference will be more even without the power all at the top with two schools – and really one, Texas.

UCF gives the Big 12 the Orlando market, a footprint in Florida, and a massive school with over 50,000 students.

Houston doesn’t replace Texas or Texas A&M, but it does put a team in a top five media market.

Cincinnati isn’t all that big media-wise, but it’s a natural fit to help bridge the geographical gap somewhat with West Virginia, and BYU is simply a huge part of the puzzle with an international fan base all while getting a decent Salt Lake City market.

2. This shouldn’t stop there. The Big 12 hasn’t made any hints of going any further for the moment, but it should think about USF to get Tampa and a natural rival with UCF. It should expand further to the west and get San Diego State and Nevada before the Pac-12 gets to yes already, and it should consider Memphis just to add another big area and another state.

Again, think about how you have to construct this with several schools making up for the lost two. But all of this is for later.

3. Divisions. As I’m writing this it’s not official yet, but it’s probably going to be Cincinnati, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, and West Virginia in what might be called the East, and Baylor, BYU, Houston, Oklahoma State, TCU, and Texas Tech in the West.

ACC, Big Ten, Pac-12 Alliance: Media Market Advantage

4. I’m old enough to remember when the American Athletic Conference was going to pick over the carcass of the Big 12. This is a gigantic blow for a league that was seemingly just on the verge of really and truly making it a Power 6 – even if it was going to be the distant No. 6 league.

This was hardly a shocker, but now the trickle down effect in this zero sum game happens. It has to try replacing irreplaceable colleges in an attempt to move forward, and that means it has to do the same thing the Big 12 is doing – go after media markets.

Florida Atlantic, FIU, Marshall, Southern Miss, UAB, and UTSA, should all be on the table from Conference USA. There aren’t a ton of other options. Maybe Northern Illinois, but it doesn’t have the hold on Chicago it thinks it does. Maybe Army, but that’s a stretch, and maybe Liberty, but there are a whole slew of problems there.

5. As always, remember, this situation is fluid. Just because the Big 12 made this move to become a whole lot stronger doesn’t mean the Big Ten or Pac-12 can’t or won’t just swoop in and expand with Kansas. The Big 12 is still extremely vulnerable.

6. It’s getting sort of lost in the overall picture of the moment, but BYU joining a conference is a massive deal on a whole slew of levels. The Pac-12 never meshed ideologically, and life as an independent wasn’t bad for BYU.

However, whether or not to join a conference has always been a constant debate within the fan base for years ever since it left the Mountain West, and the Big 12 is a terrific landing spot. Now, the College Football Playoff is in play more than before – mainly if there’s a CFP expansion. On the other side, this was a great get business-wise for the Big 12.

7. Revenue sharing? Uhhhhhhh, we’ll get back to you on that. Not all four schools being brought in are equal. BYU has a whole infrastructure it’ll want to keep.

8. So does this move make the Big 12 alliance-worthy with the ACC, Big Ten, and Pac-12? Okay, maybe, but the conference is still missing the big-time football killer on a traditional level. However, when it comes to the potential of the College Football Playoff expanding, the Big 12 should now have a seat at the table to demand an automatic spot for its champion.

9. To be goofy about this, it’s a happy day for everyone but the American Athletic Conference. This is a dream come true for UCF as it went from total obscurity as a commuter school playing football to a Power Five conference and all the notoriety that comes with it.

Houston has always wanted to be a part of the Big 12, and Cincinnati makes a move back into a big league after the Big East fizzled out over a decade ago. And again, BYU is in a Power Five conference. It’s a form of college sports legitimacy that it’s been looking for.

It’s always nice to be wanted.

It’s also nice to for a major college sports conference to bounce back big.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Kansas State (1-0) vs Southern Illinois (1-0) Game Preview

Why Southern Illinois Will Win

The Salukis are seasoned.

They had a decent FCS spring session and started out the fall session strong with an emphatic 47-21 win over SE Missouri State. Nic Baker threw for 460 yards and four scores, Avante Cox came up with a 99-yard touchdown, and it was a strong all-around performance.

It has just enough explosion on offense and toughness on the defensive front to make this a bit of a fight. Kansas State wasn’t perfect in the 24-7 win over Stanford, but …

Week 2 College Football Expert Picks

Why Kansas State Will Win

The running game clicked.

Stanford’s offense kept screwing up and the running game didn’t go anywhere – the Wildcat defensive front dominated the Cardinal O line, allowing just 39 rushing yards.

K-State QB Skyler Thompson threw a pick, but he threw a few big passes among his nine completions, and Deuce Vaughn controlled the ground game with a little bit of balance.

However …

Week 1 NFL Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

This is the game to get the Kansas State offensive line working.

It wasn’t bad against Stanford, but there were a few too many plays allowed in the backfield and the team didn’t control the clock like it should’ve.

There won’t be a whole lot of drama, if any. The Wildcat defense will play a second straight great game as it warms up for a dangerous date against Carson Strong and the Nevada offense.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Stanford (0-0) vs Kansas State (0-0) Game Preview

Why Stanford Will Win

CFN 2021 Stanford Preview

The Stanford offense had an underappreciated 2020.

It wasn’t anything special, and the running game wasn’t amazing, but the program bounced back from the 2019 problems with a steady season with an attack that kept coming though when it had to. The offensive line should once again be terrific at keeping defenses out of the backfield – it should be able to pound away a bit.

Kansas State had a good pass rush in 2020, but some of the key parts are done, the linebacking corps has to be built back up, and the secondary that had a hard time should need a few games to get everything in place.

Why Kansas State Will Win

CFN 2021 Kansas State Preview

Stanford has excellent quarterback options, but it spent fall camp trying to replace Davis Mills. Kansas State has two terrific veteran quarterbacks who can each keep things moving.

Will Howard knows the offense after being thrown to the wolves, but it’s the return of Skyler Thompson from injury that should jump-start the K-State attack. Combine the QBs with small-but-powerful RB Deuce Vaughn, and the Cats have the veterans in the backfield to be a big plus.

Stanford’s defense should be fine with eight starters returning, but it still has to prove it can get behind the line on a regular basis, and the secondary has to start coming up with more big plays after generating just two picks in 2020.

Week 1 College Football Expert Picks

What’s Going To Happen

It’s not exactly one of those HAVE to win moments, but it sort of is for both teams and the two conferences.

The Remaining 8 portion of the Big 12 could use as much juice as possible, and the Pac-12 needs as many non-conference wins as it can get. Considering Stanford has an all-Power Five schedule, it has to nail the 50/50 games.

Kansas State will be dangerous, and Thompson will be terrific, but the Cardinal will get more out of the lines, the defense will be stronger in the second half, and the Pac-12 will get a nice victory for one of its flying-under-the-radar teams.

The College Football News 2021 Big 12 preseason rankings along with a quick take on every team.

This is NOT a ranking of where the teams are going to finish. This is based on how good we think the Big 12 teams are going into the 2021 season.

2021 CFN Big 12 Preseason Rankings

1. Oklahoma Sooners

Quick Take: It’s time to take that next step forward – it’s a team good enough to at least get to the College Football Playoff National Championship. QB Spencer Rattler should become special, the skill players are fantastic, and the defense will be the best in the Big 12. There’s no excuse to do anything but roll through the first ten games before dealing with Iowa State and Oklahoma State.
Oklahoma Preview | Schedule

2. Iowa State Cyclones

Quick Take: The expectations are off the charts, and why not? Almost everyone is back from the team that came oh-so-close to winning the Big 12 title. It’s a better conference this time around and a few losses are coming – Oklahoma is the star of the league – but yeah, the hype is justified.
Iowa State Preview | Schedule

3. Texas Longhorns

Quick Take: It’s not going to be boring. Don’t expect new head coach Steve Sarkisian to get the offense dominating right out of the gate, but the skill talent is in place, the lines are good enough, and the expectations should be set at Big 12 Championship or bust – even with the Oklahoma and Iowa State games away from from Austin.
Texas Preview | Schedule

[lawrence-related id=532580]

4. Oklahoma State Cowboys

Quick Take: 2020’s preseason darling won’t get quite as much love, but it should. It’s not going to be the high-flying fun show you’d normally expect, but the defense has talent and there’s plenty of firepower to keep up the Big 12 pace.
OSU Preview | Schedule

5. TCU Horned Frogs

Quick Take: TCU quietly rolled to a 6-4 season with a nice finishing kick – winning five of the last six games – and now it returns strong with arguably the Big 12’s best defensive front to control one side and QB Max Duggan as the star on the other.
TCU Preview | Schedule

6. Texas Tech Red Raiders

Quick Take: Yeah, Texas Tech is going to be good. The linebacking corps will be fantastic, the offensive line is a strength, and if Oregon transfer QB Tyler Shough really is the next-level talent he’s supposed to be in this O, the Red Raiders will be a problem.
Texas Tech Preview | Schedule

[lawrence-related id=532391]

7. Kansas State Wildcats

Quick Take: It’s the Big 12’s wild-card team. The offensive backfield is good enough to carry things from time to time, but it’s the under-the-radar secondary that might be the differentiating factor. Watch out, though – the schedule is tougher than it appears.
K-State Preview | Schedule

8. West Virginia Mountaineers

Quick Take: Can the offense match the defense? Head coach Neal Brown needs to fight the offensive punch to come through when needed, but the other side of the ball will keep the team in just about every game.
WVU Preview | Schedule

9. Baylor Bears

Quick Take: Year Two under Dave Aranda will be better. The receiving corps is good, the offense will be stronger, and with this coaching staff, the defense is about to take a giant leap forward.
Baylor Preview | Schedule

10. Kansas Jayhawks

Quick Take: The Jayhawks got a terrific coach in Lance Leipold from Buffalo, but it’s going to take a long, long while before this thing gets moving. It’s going to take a total overhaul, but the team will bring the fight.
Kansas Preview | Schedule

2021 CFN All-Big 12 Team | 2021 Big 12 Top 30 Players

2021 Preseason CFN Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year

QB Spencer Rattler, RFr. Oklahoma

Iowa State RB Breece Hall, a slew of quarterbacks – Texas Tech’s Tyler Shough could end up being one of the top passers in the 2023 NFL Draft – and Texas RB Bijan Robinson could and should be right there in the mix for the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year honors.

But the Oklahoma quarterback will be the league’s biggest star if he progresses as expected.

Rattler is technically a redshirt freshman – he only played in three games as a freshman and gets an extra year of eligibility after the COVID season – but he’s been around for a few years and comes off a terrific 68% passing season with over 3,000 yards and 28 touchdowns and seven picks with six rushing scores. If all goes according to plan, he cranks up a Kyler Murray/Baker Mayfield/Jalen Hurts type of campaign.

2021 Preseason CFN Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year

LB Mike Rose, Sr. Iowa State

Iowa State is loaded with experienced, talented players on both sides of the ball, and RB Breece Hall and QB Brock Purdy will get all of the attention, but the 6-4, 245-pound Rose might just be the team’s best player.

He started his career with 75 tackles and a knack for coming up with a slew of big plays, followed it up with 77 tackles and more pressure into the backfield, and then came 2020.

The Cyclone star took his game to a whole other level with 96 tackles with seven interceptions and 10.5 tackles for loss, and now the do-it-all star will get to show off as the main man for another great D.

Kansas State College Football Preview 2021: Offense

Kansas State’s offense could only hold on for so long. QB Skylar Thompson was solid over the first few games – even in the loss to Arkansas State – he got hurt, freshman Will Howard was thrown to the wolves, the team survived, and then it all went wrong as the schedule got tougher.

Converting on third downs was a problem, the passing game didn’t do enough, the running attack was just okay, and the defense did nothing to help the cause in the five-game losing streak to close things out.

Thompson is back, healthy, and the no-question main man for the attack, and Howard is the now-veteran No. 2. Overall, the QB situation is better than it was this time last year.

Deuce Vaughn is only 5-5 and 171 pounds, but he plays big for the Wildcat O. (Sorry about that lame line.) He led the team with 642 yards and seven scores, and he’ll get help from the quarterbacks no matter who’s under center. It’s a very, very thin group of backs, but the Wildcats are just fine at finding other options and FB Mason Barta is a 236-pound pounder who can help. Now the O line has to do its part.

It wasn’t bad considering it underwent a wholesale change. The front five was decent for the running game and was solid in pass protection. Now everyone is expected to be back including the top backups – this should be the strongest line yet in the Chris Klieman era.

Vaughn was the top receiver with 25 grabs, and he made the most of his big plays. Now the wide receivers have to show up. 6-2 Malik Knowles and 6-4 Chabastin Taylor have the size and big play ability, but the corps as a whole has to be more consistent – no wideout hit the 20-catch mark.

No. 2 target Briley Moore is done at tight end, but former star USC recruit and Illinois get Daniel Imatorbhebhe is coming in and should make an immediate impact.

Why Kansas State Will Win

Kansas State has kicked it in at the right time.

After losing 13 straight games, the Wildcats won four of their last five games including a shocker over Oklahoma and a first round Big 12 Tournament victory over TCU.

The defense was decent for most of the year, but it stepped up the intensity against the Horned Frogs, holding them to just 21% from three while moving the ball around well to get up in the first half and roll through the second in the 71-50 win.

Baylor – as amazing it is – isn’t all that great at guarding the three, isn’t going to dominate on the boards, and …

Why Baylor Will Win

Baylor 107, Kansas State 59. That was the first meeting at the end of January, hitting 58% from the field and 61% from three as it ripped through without any issues.

Baylor hasn’t been able to quite get its groove totally back since missing 21 days in February, but it’s still scoring at will and it’s still hitting everything on the inside – it made over half its shots in the last three games and nailed 63% from the outside in the win over Texas Tech.

The ball movement was back against the Red Raiders, the rebounding was dominant, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Kansas State won’t be able to keep up.

The Wildcats have been ultra-plucky over the last few games, but Baylor will jump out to a big early lead, hit a few three late in a first half run, and will move on without having to push terribly hard.
