5. College Football News Preview 2020: Indiana Hoosiers Offense 3 Things To Know

– The offense quietly started to work really, really well. It might not have been able to keep up enough to overcome the occasional defensive issues, and the firepower wasn’t there to do anything against the Ohio States and Michigans of the world, but at least the attack was able to keep things moving.

The running game needs to be stronger, but the passing attack was the second-best in the Big Ten. With the potential of eight starters returning – along with some parts that missed time last year – the league’s No. 3 offense should be every bit as strong.

– It’s now time for the Michael Penix era to take off. Peyton Ramsey did a nice job last season, but he’s bolting for Northwestern. Former Utah transfer Jack Tuttle is a talent, but as long as Penix is in one piece, this is his gig. The 6-3, 202-pounder threw for 1,394 yards and ten touchdowns with just four picks, but he was knocked out for the season with a shoulder injury.

Top targets Whop Philyor and Ty Fryfogle are back, along with junior TE Peyton Hendershot. However, there’s a wee bit of a depth problem early on after losing longtime veterans Nick Westbrook and Donavan Hale. There’s a whole lot of promising talent coming in – Rashawn Williams and David Baker were terrific gets in the latest recruiting class – but the law firm-sounding tandem of Philyor and Fryfogle will be the main men early on.

– Stevie Scott wasn’t quite the rushing force he was as a freshman, but he was still terrific, following up a 1,137-yard, ten-touchdown season with 845 yards and another ten scores. The problem? No problem – he wasn’t used as much.

Sampson James was in the transfer portal after rushing for 275 yards and three scores as a freshman, but he’s back, and Penix is a dangerous runner who should be third on the team in yards.

The O line was okay. It wasn’t the dominant force of past years, and it could use a star who can blast away, but it’ll be a good group once the interior is figured out. Matthew Bedford and Caleb Jones are big veterans at tackle, and 311-pound senior Harry Crider will play somewhere on the inside.

NFL Draft 2020: Big Ten

The Big Ten is always able to carry its share of the load in the first rounds of NFL Drafts, but the bulk usually depends on what Ohio State is bringing.

Six Big Ten players went in the first round last year, but just four were taken in 2018. Seven were selected on Day One in 2017, but the first Big Tener wasn’t picked until the 11.

Six were picked in 2016, but five of them were Buckeyes. Ohio State brought back a ton of talent the year before and didn’t send anyone to the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft, and it showed with just three Big Ten players being selected.

Two Ohio State players might go in the first three picks this year.

The BetMGM line for the total Big Ten players drafted in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft is 5.5 – a solid number that keeps in line with what the conference normally does.

Unless something crazy happens. Ohio State DE Chase Young and CB Jeff Okudah will go at the 2-3 to Washington and Detroit, respectively.

Expect something crazy to happen – someone is going to trade up into the top three to grab a quarterback – but it doesn’t matter. Of course Young and Okudah are first rounders

Iowa OT Tristan Wirfs is a possible top ten overall pick, and then it might be a while before the Big Ten gets back on the board.

And then it gets really, really dicey.

If the line is 5.5, and you’re looking for six players to get drafted, you need the Big Ten to bring whole lot of funk – and surprises – to the back-half of the first round.

Iowa DE AJ Epenesa is a top ten talent who’ll drop, but he’s almost certain to go in the first round. The same goes for Penn State pass rushing star Yetur Gross-Matos to get it to five. After that, how much do you believe in the Badgers?

Wisconsin LB Zach Baun seemed like a sure-thing to go in the 20s, but a wonky urine test at the combine might have pushed him down a bit. He’s still a strong option, though, as is RB Jonathan Taylor to just about anyone over the last seven first round picks.

Could Michigan edge rusher Josh Uche or center/guard Cesar Ruiz slip into the top 32? Is there an outside shot that Ohio State RB JK Dobbins can be a late first-rounder?

There are options, but …

How Many Big Ten Players Will Be Drafted In the First Round?

There isn’t enough value on the under to go wild, but it might just be the right call.

Again, Young, Okudah, Wirfs, Epenesa and Gross-Matos are almost-certain locks to go in the first round. Dobbins, Uche and Ruiz are second rounders, and Baun is going to drop a bit. If he doesn’t, then there you go – you’ve got the over.

It’s going to come down to Taylor.

There’s a big question about whether or not any running backs will go at all in the first round, but Georgia’s D’Andre Swift will likely go somewhere in the late 20s.

Taylor is a top 15 overall talent, but value-wise he might fall to around the 40s.

You’ll have to be holding your breath for the last 90 minutes of the first round, but go with the slightly better value with the under.

With the history of the Big Ten, there are loads and loads of Hall of Famers and all-time great NFL draft picks to choose from. So who are the best of all-time?

This isn’t a list of the top pro players to come from the Big Ten schools – these are the best draft picks.

That means that guys who had great careers for someone other than the teams that drafted them get knocked down a peg, or aren’t on the list at all.

The goal for any draft pick is to get a player who performs at a high level for a long period of time, so longevity matters over one short burst of greatness.

Indiana Greatest NFL Draft Picks

DE Pete Pihos
1945, 5th round, 41st pick overall, Philadelphia

Silver: DE Earl Faison, 1961, 1st round, 7th pick overall, San Diego
Bronze: C Bob DeMarco, 1960, 14th round, 157th pick overall, St. Louis

Pete Pihos is the lone Hall of Famer, playing nine years for Philadelphia and turning out to be way ahead of his time. He caught 373 passes over his career, finishing with spots on four straight All-Pro teams and with seven Pro Bowls.

Earl Faison only played five years for San Diego, but he made his era count going to the Pro Bowl each season and earning All-Pro honors four times.

Center Bob DeMarco had a 15-year career, doing most of his big things with St. Louis, going to three Pro Bowls and getting on two All-Pro teams in his nine years.

Maryland Greatest NFL Draft Picks

DT Randy White
1975, 1st round, 2nd pick overall, Dallas

Silver: DT/OG Stan Jones, 1953, 5th round, 54th pick overall, Chicago
Bronze: QB Boomer Esiason, 1984, 2nd round, 38th pick overall, Cincinnati

Dallas tried to make Randy White an outside linebacker. That didn’t really work, so he was moved to defensive tackle and he became one of the greatest linemen of all-time, being named to seven All-Pro teams, winning a Super Bowl, and getting into the Hall of Fame.

Stan Jones was a Hall of Famer for the Bears, going to seven Pro Bowls and getting on three All-Pro teams in his 12 years. Boomer Esiason became an MVP in 1988 and took Cincinnati to the Super Bowl. After famously having to wait too long and dropping in the draft, he went on to throw for over 27,000 yards with 187 touchdowns for the Bengals.

Michigan Greatest NFL Draft Picks

QB Tom Brady
2000, 6th round, 199th pick overall, New England

Silver: OL Dan Dierdorf, 1971, 2nd round, 43rd pick overall, St. Louis
Bronze: CB Charles Woodson, 1998, 1st round, 4th pick overall, Oakland

Good luck ever coming up with a better draft pick than New England taking Tom Brady in the sixth round in 2000. He turned out okay with a whopping 14 Pro Bowl honors, three All-Pro teams, and six Super Bowls.

Dan Dierdorf is in Canton after a brilliant 13-year career with the Cardinals, earning All-Pro honors three times as a tackle.

Charles Woodson was terrific for Oakland in both his stints to start and end his career, but he was at his best late with Green Bay. He still makes the cut after starting out with four Pro Bowls and a 1999 All-Pro season for the Raiders.

Michigan State Greatest NFL Draft Picks

CB Herb Adderley
1961, 1st round, 12th pick overall, Green Bay

Silver: OG Joe DeLamielleure, 1st round, 26th pick overall, Buffalo
Bronze: OG Ed Budde, 1st round, 8th pick overall, Kansas City

Herb Adderley turned into the playmaking Hall of Fame defensive back the Green Bay secondary worked around in his nine years. He was named to four All-Pro teams as the premier corner of the 1960s.

Joe DeLamielleure played seven years for Buffalo before going to Cleveland, but the three-time All-Pro’s work for the Bills were enough to earn a Hall of Fame bust, helping to pave the way for O.J. Simpson.

WR Derrick Mason probably belongs on the list, but Ed Budde spent 14 years as a rock for the Kansas City offense, going to seven Pro Bowls and making two All-Pro teams.

Ohio State Greatest NFL Draft Picks

OT Jim Parker
1957, 1st round, 8th pick overall, Baltimore

Silver: OT Orlando Pace, 1997, 1st round, 1st pick overall, St. Louis
Bronze: LB Randy Gradishar, 1974, 1st round, 14th pick overall, Denver

Jim Parker was an all-timer of an All-Pro blocker, getting named to the team eight times at various spots for Baltimore. He was the anchor of some of the NFL’s greatest teams, and he helped keep Johnny Unitas upright.

Orlando Pace took a little while to warm up, and then he became a Hall of Fame blocker and one of the stars of the Greatest Show On Turf. He was a three-time All-Pro and went to seven Pro Bowls.

Randy Gradishar is on the short list of the greatest players to not be in the Hall of Fame despite going to seven Pro Bowls and being named to two All-Pro teams.

Penn State Greatest NFL Draft Picks

LB Jack Ham
1971, 2nd round, 34th pick overall, Pittsburgh

Silver: RB Franco Harris, 1972, 1st round, 13th pick overall, Pittsburgh
Bronze: RB Lenny Moore, 1956, 1st round, 9th pick overall, Baltimore

A standout even on a Pittsburgh defense full of all-timers, Jack Ham was a seven-time All-Pro on the way to a Hall of Fame career. Very consistent and very good for a very long time, he played 12 years for the Steelers at the highest of levels.

Franco Harris was the missing piece of the Pittsburgh Super Bowl puzzle, adding the rushing punch with close to 12,000 yards with 91 touchdowns in his Hall of Fame career. He started out going to nine straight Pro Bowls and was named a 1977 All-Pro.

Lenny Moore played 12 years for Baltimore earning five All-Pro honors in his Hall of Fame career.

Rutgers has a horrible, horrible history of NFL draft prospects, so go ahead and put Deron Cherry in this even though he wasn’t drafted. Kansas City did just fine, getting a six-time Pro Bowl talent and three-time All-Pro with 50 picks in his 11-year career.

Ray Rice – up until it all went off the rails – was a terrific pro for six years, running for over 1,000 yards four times and going to three Pro Bowls.

Devin McCourty was only named to two Pro Bowls, but he became a huge part of the New England defense for over a decade.

On the field and court – whose fans had the most fun?

Of course every school has sports outside of the big two that matter and generate revenue, but when it comes to what athletic departments need, it’s really all about college football and men’s basketball.

Which Big Ten schools had the best and worst seasons?

Here’s how these rankings work.

1) The top-ranked schools with teams that went to a bowl game and would’ve played in the NCAA Tournament.

2) The next group had stronger football seasons and were okay in basketball. The superstar basketball schools get credit, but football is the bigger revenue generator.

3) One or the other. Usually there’s a disparity with one good season in one sport an a clunker in the other. It’s sort of a catch-all before …

4) The disasters. No bowl game, there wouldn’t have been a trip to the NCAA Tournament, no fun.

How Were The Football/Basketball Seasons? 17 straight Big Ten basketball losses – who loses twice to 2019-2020 Northwestern? – with a depleted team was awful, but head coach Fred Hoiberg suffering from the flu on the sidelines in the Big Ten Tournament turned a horrible season frightening.

The football team lost five of its last six games, dropping the home finale to Iowa to miss out on a bowl game and close out a second straight losing season under Scott Frost.

12. Purdue

Basketball: 16-15 overall, 9-11 in conference, T10th in Big Ten

How Were The Football/Basketball Seasons? The Boilermakers could never get either season going. The basketball team looked like it might turn things up a few notches in early February, but it lost four straight and five of the last seven games to go the other way.

The football team played better than the 4-8 record. Decimated by injuries – and hurt by horrible performances against Nevada and Illinois – it was a struggle to get over a 2-6 start.

Why Iowa Will Win

At least lately, Indiana is bad at college basketball.

Shockingly, the appearance of Bob Knight didn’t inspire the Hoosiers in a blowout home loss to Purdue as part of a four-game losing streak and a run of five losses in the last seven games.

They’re not hitting a thing from three, they’re not moving the ball around well, they’re not taking the ball away, and they’re turning it over way too often. Throw in the lack of scoring punch, and there’s a problem against the No. 1 scoring attack in the Big Ten.

Iowa is fantastic at coming up with the extra pass, it’s hitting rom three, and it has the ability to on scoring runs that Indiana can’t.

Why Indiana Will Win

The Iowa defense isn’t anything special.

Yes, Indiana can’t shoot from the outside, and it’s having too many issues coming up with easy points, but the Hawkeyes are the second-worst in the Big Ten in field goal percentage allowed – they allow the easy points IU is having a hard time generating.

The Hoosiers might have a slew of issues at the moment, but they’re still rebounding well and the scoring issues appear to be temporary. Iowa is the team to get healthy against, at least offensively.

What’s Going To Happen

Iowa will hit from three, Indiana won’t.

The Hoosiers will have problems with scoring droughts thanks to a few too many turnovers. Iowa won’t be razor-sharp, but they’ll keep pain going for IU with a good finishing kick.

Why Indiana Will Win

The pressure is off.

IU came into this game over the last few seasons needing a win to go bowling, and lost the Old Oaken Bucket to the other side both times. This time around, it’s already bowl eligible and – unlike the last two seasons – has the better team.

The Hoosiers have a good, balanced attack, but this week it’s time for the running game to rumble after running into the Michigan and Penn State brick walls.

Purdue gave up over 400 yards last week to Wisconsin, but that’s Wisconsin. Northwestern isn’t running over anything, and it was able to rip of over 250 yards on the Boilermaker defensive front, and Illinois ran for 242 yards a few weeks ago.

There’s no Purdue running game to worry about, and IU is brilliant at controlling the clock and the time of possession. As long as Stevie Scott and the Hoosiers can push for around 200 yards on the ground, they should have the ball for over 35 minutes.

Why Purdue Will Win

Alright, Aidan O’Connell, time to wing it around the yard.

The third-string quarterback wasn’t bad in Madison last week, throwing or a decent 289 yards with two scores despite being under constant pressure. Indiana’s secondary can be bombed on.

Michigan’s Shea Patterson went off for 366 yards and five touchdowns last week. Nebraska’s Adrian Martinez was brilliant – hitting 20-of-23 passes – in a loss to IU, and Michigan State’s Brian Lewerke went for 300.

It’s a hit-or-miss secondary, but it doesn’t hit enough and it misses a whole lot of interceptions. The Hoosiers have picked off just four passes on the year, and when it’s struggling against the pass, it really has problems.

O’Connell will throw it 50 times for over 300 yards and …

What’s Going To Happen

Purdue is going to lose.

Indiana was able to win those games against Michigan State and Nebraska when it was bombed on, and this week, it’ll be the other side of the ball that takes over.

The Hoosiers will control the clock, O’Connell and Purdue will misfire on a few key opportunities in the second half, and in a fun battle, the losing streak in the series will end for the Bloomington side.

Michigan State 27, Rutgers 0

It was only a win over Rutgers, but Michigan State really, really, really, really needed that. It wasn’t perfect, the running game was stuffed a bit too much and the offense stalled a bit, but Cody White went off for 11 catches for 136 yards and three scores, and it was a shutout over a team that was supposed to be shutout. The program can exhale for a moment – it hit the putt.

 

Rutgers just doesn’t have the offensive talent. Johnny Langan completed 8-of-20 passes for 57 yards with a pick, led the team with 49 rushing yards, and Isaiah Pacheco was held to 36 yards. It didn’t help that the Scarlet Knights were playing a team that cared.

The Spartans owned this game by more than the final score. They didn’t allow a third down conversion and held the ball for almost 38 minutes. There wasn’t any drama whatsoever.

Michigan State did what it needed to do, and now it closes out with Maryland for a shot at a sixth win and bowl eligibility. Rutgers’ season will come to a brutal but merciful end at Penn State.

Iowa 19, Illinois 10

Iowa played a typical Iowa game. It battled hard, played good run defense, and did enough to keep things moving through the air. It wasn’t easy, and it was a grind to do anything on the ground, but it was the eighth win of the season with just Nebraska to go. A shot at a ten-win campaign is still there.

The Hawkeyes couldn’t get any push up front – the Illinois D line did a nice job. Iowa ended up with just 79 rushing yards, and Nate Stanley wasn’t all that sharp, but he connected on a few bit pass plays with Ihmir Smith-Marsette catching four passes for 121 yards.

Illinois played relatively well despite only scoring ten points. The running backs didn’t get the ball enough – QB Brandon Peters led the team with 76 rushing yards – but the O averaged close to five yards per carry. The passing game didn’t cluck – Peters threw two picks – but it was an okay performance despite the final score.

It was a good fight, and now Illinois gets to go for a seventh win when it finishes up against Northwestern. If a 19-10 loss on the road to Iowa was okay, a loss of any sort to this Wildcat team would be totally unacceptable.
