2022 Preseason CFN Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year

QB Frank Harris, Sr. UTSA

Last year it was RB Sincere McCormick – along with a solid defense – that took over on way to the Conference USA title and a breakthrough season for the UTSA program. The quarterback was pretty good, too.

The 6-0, 200-pound lefty was the main man leading the way, and now this is his team more than ever after two terrific seasons. Harris has connected on 66% of his career passes, kept the interceptions down with six in each of the last two years, and in 2021 he started hitting his deep throws a bit more. Combine all of that with over 1,200 rushing yards and 15 scores, and this might be his league, too.

2022 Preseason CFN Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year

LB KD Davis, Sr. North Texas

The 6-0, 229-pounder isn’t huge, and he might not have the build of a normal middle linebacker, but he’s got great range and he makes a whole lot of tackles.

The 2021 First Team and 2020 Honorable Mention All-Conference USA honoree made 284 tackles – leading Conference USA with 121 stops – with 11 sacks and 28 tackles for loss over the last three seasons for a team not known for its defense. In his fifth year, expect him to be even more disruptive.

Conference USA Preseason Predictions For Every Game: Preview 2022

Conference USA preseason predictions for every game, predicted order of finish, and lookahead to the 2022 season.

Just how much does it hurt Conference USA to lose Marshall, Old Dominion, and Southern Miss to the Sun Belt this season?

The league had to quickly scramble this offseason to change up its schedule, it’s having to do even more to keep the business going with Charlotte, FAU, North Texas, Rice, UAB and UTSA bolting in 2023 – Liberty, New Mexico State, Sam Houston and Jacksonville State will enter the fun – and all of that will likely be the main focus of the 2022 season.

And then UAB, UTSA and WKU should be the stars of the conference again.

Where’s the big surprise going to come from?

The problem is that too many schedules have too many tough non-conference games, but it should be entertaining as several teams will likely be fighting for bowl eligibility over the final few weeks.

Knowing there’s going to be a crazy outlier to screw this all up, here are the 2022 Conference USA preseason predictions.

Florida Atlantic Owls Preview 2022

It all needs to kick in for Willie Taggart and Florida Atlantic.

There was a misfire season in the mix, but Lane Kiffin came up with a few monster seasons, and it wasn’t supposed to be a big pivot to Taggart, a terrific builder of programs who didn’t get any semblance of a break or time to operate at Florida State.

But FAU didn’t need any rebuilding or a whole lot of work two years ago, and a collapse of a final month in 2021 was a problem.

Everything was rolling along with an okay 5-3 season and four games to go to get bowl eligible, but the offense flopped in November, the defense struggled, and four double-digit losses – hurt most by the 27-17 home season finale against Middle Tennessee – made it three losing seasons in the last four for Taggart since leaving Oregon.

Fortunately, the 2022 Owls are loaded with veterans, a few nice parts from the transfer portal beefed up the depth, and with all the changes in Conference USA, the opportunity is there to fill the void and become the league’s powerhouse again.

Florida Atlantic Owls Preview 2022: Offense

The offense died when it needed to kick in. Overall, there wasn’t a problem moving the chains – the Owls were great on third downs, but the style of attack means they only had the ball for around 27 minutes a game – but the pass protection wasn’t there and the running game was painfully inconsistent. But …

The offensive line is loaded with veterans. It wasn’t a great group last year, but four starters are back, there’s decent depth and Brendan Bordner is coming in from Rutgers to work on the left side – that allows some shuffling to get the five best players up front. Now they need to do more for the ground game.

Johnny Ford averaged over six yards per carry with a team-high 831 yards, and Nebraska transfer Marvin Scott comes in to add even more speed.

Former Miami Hurricane N’Kosi Perry was fine as the starting quarterback. He threw for close to 2,800 yards with 20 touchdowns and seven picks, and now he knows the offense and should settle in. The receivers are there to help.

LaJohntay Wester led the way with 65 catches, but junior Je’Quan Burton is the explosive playmaker averaging over 18 yards per grab. More options have to emerge, but there are plenty of good-sized targets looking to get more work.

Florida Atlantic Owls Preview 2022: Defense

The defense might have struggled late, but it had its moments. It was the best in Conference USA on third downs, it did a great job of bending but not breaking, and it only allowed more than 165 rushing yards against Florida and Air Force.

There should be a good improvement with a whole lot of experience back up front and the transfer portal providing plenty of instant help, starting with …

The linebacking corps got a boost with Jamie Pettway coming in from Missouri and Tennessee’s Morven Joseph playing in a hybrid role in the rotation. They’ll go along with veteran Eddie Williams – a safety-sized outside defender – and 245-pound Chris Jones adding some thump.

The pass rush has to show up from somewhere. There were just 17 sacks with four to them coming in the finale against Middle Tennessee State. Jaylen Joyner only came up with four sacks, but that was enough to lead the team. He’s back at one end, and big 356-pound Evan Anderson managed to come up with a team high eight tackles for loss on the nose.

The secondary is the biggest problem with the loss of New York Giant Zyon Gilbert at one corner and several other key parts gone.

On the plus side, Teja Young is one of the best safeties in Conference USA – third on the team with 59 tackles and with a team-high three picks – and all the really, really young players from last year should be ready to fill in.

Charlotte vs Florida Atlantic Game Preview

Why Charlotte Will Win

This should be a better team than the one that got rolled by Florida Atlantic 38-9 at home last season.

Eight starters return to an offense that’s going to be sharper and better through the air – Chris Reynolds is a good veteran passer who’s in for a big season.

The Florida Atlantic defense is getting boost from the transfer portal, but the pass rush is unproven and the secondary is all but starting over around star safety Teja Young. Reynolds should go off.

However …

Week 0 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Florida Atlantic Will Win

Will the Charlotte defense be better right away?

There’s a ton of experience back, but the production wasn’t there, several of top tacklers are gone, and this should be a work in progress for a D that was miserable at coming up with third down stops and didn’t to a thing against the run.

The Florida Atlantic offensive line should take over with four starters back to keep QB N’Kosi Perry clean against the reworking Charlotte pass rush. The receivers are in place, the running game should be strong out of the gate, and defensively, the linebackers are good enough to keep Reynolds from doing too much on the move.

Week 0 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

The Florida Atlantic offense was almost perfectly balanced in last year’s blowout win over the 49ers, and the defense didn’t allow anything on the ground.

It’s not going to be quite that easy for the Owls – the Charlotte passing game will be more productive – but it’ll be a good start to the season with a strong Conference USA home win.

It’s a new world for Conference USA with the loss of Marshall, Old Dominion, and Southern Miss over to the Sun Belt. There are still plenty of good teams still around, but the league is hanging on through the expansion process.

Can 2021’s star teams keep it all going? UTSA and WKU won’t be quite as good, UAB should be strong, and UTEP might just keep on stunning.

If Florida Atlantic can rise up after a down season, and if North Texas and Middle Tennessee can be bowl-worthy again, it should be a fun run.

The rankings are based on how good the teams should be and not the final projected records. Keeping in mind that this all could/might/will change when we make the final calls in August …

Florida Atlantic vs Middle Tennessee Game Preview

Why Middle Tennessee Will Win

It’s just this simple. Take the ball away and – usually – win, don’t take the ball away and lose.

Duh – that’s life for a whole lot of teams, but turnovers mean something extra for Middle Tennessee.

The Blue Raiders continue to lead the nation in takeaways, coming up with 29 on the year with five in the win over Southern Miss, four against FIU, and 21 in the last seven games.

The loss to Liberty was the only time since September that they didn’t win after generating a takeaway.

On the other side, Florida Atlantic’s offense has stalled. It hasn’t totally collapsed, but it’s struggling to score – it hasn’t pushed past 17 in any of the last three games – and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why Florida Atlantic Will Win

Florida Atlantic doesn’t really have a turnover issue.

It has big problems in a whole slew of areas, but it’s been able to control the turnover margin. Even when it gives the ball away – like it has over the last few games – with five turnovers in the last two – the defense makes up for it.

The Owls haven’t been in the negative turnover margin since early October.

Not, the offense hasn’t been great, but the Middle Tennessee attack hasn’t been consistent enough.

At home, as long as the FAU running game can get in control of the game, everything else should work.

The Owls are 4-1 in Boca Raton with the only loss coming to Marshall.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

What’s Going To Happen

So it’s an interesting situation.

Both teams are 5-6, but there probably won’t be enough bowl eligible teams. If that’s the case, the schools with five-win football teams get in based on the Academic Progress Rate, and Middle Tennessee should be right there in the mix.

So if Florida Atlantic wins, both teams will likely go bowling. If Middle Tennessee wins, FAU will be out.

Middle Tennessee’s offense will stall just enough on the road – it’s not quite the same against good teams without starter Chase Cunningham – and the Owls will own home once again.

Florida Atlantic vs WKU Game Preview

Why Florida Atlantic Will Win

The Owls can still do this.

They need a lot of help, but there’s still a path to win the East and go to the Conference USA Championship, but it starts with a win here. More realistically, this is a chance to get bowl eligible.

The offense has stalled lately, but it has just enough of a passing game to potentially keep up. To win this, though, the defense has to come through against the high-powered WKU passing attack. The secondary is terrific at taking the ball away, the pass D overall has been outstanding on third downs, and this group can tackle.

On the flip side, WKU’s defense is awful on third downs, its own pass defense gives up a ton of yards, and …

Why WKU Will Win

Florida Atlantic is a nice fit for the Hilltoppers.

The Owls don’t control the clock – there won’t be a time of possession issue here for a WKU offense that keeps the ball for just 27 minutes a game. As good as the FAU defense has been, it doesn’t do much to get to the quarterback – Bailey Zappe should have plenty of time to do what it does.

On a five-game winning streak, the WKU offense has been able to win even when the O doesn’t crank up a bazillion yards. However, it’s getting to 500 yards of total offense on a regular basis and …

What’s Going To Happen

WKU wins the East if with a win. If it loses, the date with Marshall next week is for the division title if the Herd beat Charlotte on Saturday.

The turnaround will be complete.

From a team that didn’t do anything offensively last year to an appearance in the Conference USA title game, WKU will get there with a good day from the defense to go along with the offensive pop.

Florida Atlantic vs Old Dominion Game Preview

Why Florida Atlantic Will Win

The Owls can get bowl eligible with a win, but there’s more to the season than that. They need a Marshall loss after losing last week, but if they win this and beat WKU next week, the Conference USA East race gets really, really interesting.

The defense has been among the best in the conference, it has a way of coming up big when it has to, and it’ll lock down on the downfield passing game – Old Dominion doesn’t really have one.

The Florida Atlantic ground game has been great, the offense has been balanced, and overall it’s strong enough on third downs to maintain control of the game.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Old Dominion Will Win

The Monarchs are on a two-game winning streak and now want to make a huge statement.

The running game has been terrific at times – rolling for over 200 yards in two of the last four games – to do a nice job of controlling games and converting on third downs.

Florida Atlantic’s defense might be great, but there isn’t enough of a pass rush to matter, the offensive line isn’t great in pass protection, and it’s a fast attack – it doesn’t control the clock.

The Owls aren’t going to come out and hang 50 on the board. The ODU defense should be just enough to at least keep this close.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

Just how good is Old Dominion?

It was able to push Marshall and UTEP, and it’s been more than competitive enough to give Florida Atlantic a fight.

The Owls have been a wee bit inconsistent, and they’ve mostly been beating the mediocre to sad teams on the slate. This should be close, entertaining, and it’ll come down to the final drive.

Florida Atlantic takes the ball away, and Old Dominion doesn’t.

UTEP vs Florida Atlantic Game Preview

Why UTEP Will Win

What’s bowl eligible UTEP doing that’s so right?

It’s one of the best stories of the 2021 season – the Miners are good at football and have a shot to take over the Conference USA West division with a win over UTSA next week.

First, they have to keep the shocking production going from a defense that’s traditionally been a doormat.

It’s been amazing on third downs, the pass defense has been wonderful, and overall, the D is No. 1 in the league allowing fewer than 300 yards per game.

The offense might not be devastating, but there’s a nice downfield passing game to complement the defense that’s allowed fewer than 14 points in three of the last four games.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Florida Atlantic Will Win

Florida Atlantic has the offense to make UTEP press a bit.

The Owls were terrific in blowout wins over Charlotte and FIU, hitting well over 200 yards both running and passing, starting with a passing attack that should be able to push the Miner secondary.

Louisiana Tech can throw, but other than that, there haven’t been a whole lot of high-powered passing teams on the UTEP slate. Florida Atlantic won’t go off, but the offense is among the best in the country on third downs, and …

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

That’s how this is all going to work for Florida Atlantic. It’s not about the explosion. It’s about the consistency of the offense that won’t turn the ball over and should force UTEP to take a few too many chances.

The Miners keep getting challenged and they keep coming through, but they have yet to beat a team that’s likely to go bowling. This is when they have to prove they can play with the conference big boys. They’ll fall just short in a good game on the road, but they’ll show they’re for real, and that they belong.

Winning would be nice, but they can drop this and be just fine as long as they beat UTSA next week.
