Cincinnati vs Tulsa Game Preview

Why Cincinnati Will Win

The pass defense is good enough.

It might not have the NFL-caliber stars of last year’s secondary, but this year’s Bearcat group have been terrific so far.

Indiana’s Conner Bazelak threw for 280 yards and two scores last week in the 45-24 UC win, but he only hit 47% of his passes. So far this year, KJ Jefferson of Arkansas is the only quarterback able to complete more than half of his throws against the D.

On the other side, the Tulsa defense as been good, but it doesn’t get enough of a pass rush. Give Ben Bryant time to throw and he’ll go off. He might ed to because …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Tulsa Will Win

Tulsa’s Davis Brin has been great.

Last week was the first blip. Ole Miss was able to keep Brin from going off, but he still threw two touchdown passes in the 35-27 loss. He’s not the most accurate passer around, but he’s bombing away – he led the nation in passing before last week – and he’s going keep on firing.

If he struggles again, the running game is there to help the cause. It was outstanding last week against the Rebels. Overall, the Golden Hurricane have the top offense in the American Athletic Conference, but …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

No, this won’t be the thriller that last year’s 28-20 Cincinnati win was.

Is this going to be a wild shootout? Brin will throw well, but it’ll be Bryant who stands out even if he doesn’t hit 300 yards for a fourth time in five games.

The Bearcat defense will hold up well against the run as the game goes on to keep the very quiet run of strong performances going.

Indiana vs Cincinnati Game Preview

Why Indiana Will Win

The Hoosiers are finding ways to win close games.

3-0 is 3-0 is 3-0. Should they have lost to WKU? Maybe. Didn’t. Should they have lost in the opener to Illinois? Definitely. Didn’t.

The Hoosiers aren’t making a slew of massive mistakes, they’ve got a reliable quarterback in Connor Bazelak who’s getting the job done, and they’re balanced enough to keep the Bearcat offense on the sidelines.

Cincinnati – unlike IU – is having mistake problems. It came up with ten penalties in every game and lost six turnovers so far. But …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Cincinnati Will Win

This might not be the 2021 Bearcats, but they’re still playing well.

As it turns out, Arkansas might really be one of the five best teams in the SEC, and maybe better. Cincinnati gave the Hogs a big push on the road, got the passing game going against Miami University, and moving the ball hasn’t been a problem.

The pass rush is good enough to bother Bazelak, the defense has been a rock against the run over the last two weeks, and everything should be fine as long as the penalties slow down and the special teams can tighten up a tad.

Week 4 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

The Cincinnati penalties won’t slow, and the special teams – the coverage teams – might have one misfire, and it won’t matter.

The Bearcat lines are playing great, veteran QB Ben Bryant will continue to be terrific – he’s hitting 70% of his throws – and it’ll all come through against the Hoosiers who have been hanging on by a thread.

IU won’t get blasted, but it won’t be able to come through late this week.

Cincinnati vs Miami University Game Preview

Why Miami University Will Win

The RedHawks have the run defense to make this interesting.

The secondary has had its problems, but the run D has allowed just 1.7 yards per carry and 90 yards in all. Stuffing Robert Morris was expected, but it also held down Kentucky.

Cincinnati is getting the passing attack going, but it’s the ground game that took over against Kennesaw State and did a decent job of keeping up against Arkansas.

The Bearcats are struggling defensively on third downs, the 20 penalties are way too many, and they’re not controlling the clock. But …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why Cincinnati Will Win

The passing game worked great against Arkansas, and Ben Bryant was razor-sharp last week against Kennesaw State.

The Bearcats will try to run, but they’ll have way too much success moving the chains through the air.

Miami University might be doing a good job on the defensive front, but it’s giving up too many completed passes – Kentucky’s Will Levis had no problems.

Combine that with MU’s problems on special team and the lack of a downfield passing game, and …

Week 3 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

The Bearcats will once again take down the rival.

15 straight going back to 2005. That’s what it has been for Cincinnati over Miami University, and it’ll be 16 in a row with a good day from the passing game and a +2 turnover margin to pull away.

Cincinnati vs Kennesaw State Game Preview

Why Kennesaw State Will Win

The Owls struggled in the season opener against Samford, but it has a dangerous offense, the downfield passing game is going to push the secondary when it gives it a shot, and the attack should perk up and be better than it was in Week 1.

It wasn’t able to hit the deep passes against the Bulldogs to go along with its normally dangerous running game, but it’s there.

The O is going to press the Bearcats in all phases – it was third in the FCS last season in rushing – and and the UC defense has to gear it up fast after the loss to Arkansas and with the rivalry game with Miami University up next.

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Cincinnati Will Win

Cincinnati has the defense to hold up.

It was a tough 31-24 loss at Arkansas last week, but the D was able to come up with just enough stops to keep the game alive. The offense wasn’t as sharp or dangerous as it was last season, but the offensive line is still great, new quarterback Ben Bryant was terrific, and the tempo will make a difference.

Kennesaw State has to win the time of possession battle by a large margin, and it probably won’t.

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Cincinnati showed that it’s still for real in the loss to Arkansas. That was a road game against a strong SEC West team – it was a good fight in a tough game.

This week it will all kick in. Kennesaw State is a good FCS team that’s going to hit everyone else hard with its running game, but the season will need another week before it kicks in gear.

Arkansas vs Cincinnati Game Preview

Why Cincinnati Will Win

The Bearcats still have the lines.

You can’t hang around with the Hogs if you can’t hod up up front, and Cincinnati should be able to do that.

There might be big talent losses in several areas, but the offensive front is loaded with all-stars, veterans, and it should be among the best in the nation at keeping defenses out of the backfield.

As good as Arkansas is on the defensive front, it’s not going to live behind the line and it likely won’t generate a big pass rush.

The defensive side loses more parts, but the rotation was good enough – and the talent level raised up enough – to have another good front seven. However …

Week 1 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Arkansas Will Win

The Arkansas running game should be able to take over as the game goes on.

The team led the SEC in rushing, the passing efficiency should be there against a revamped Cincinnati secondary that lost a slew of NFL talents, and the O line should be able to more than hold its own – if not take over – even against this defensive front.

On the other side, can the Bearcats match the production from the lost group of skill parts? The receiving corps will be fine, and the new guys are good, but Desmond Ridder was a special quarterback who won’t quickly be replaced.

Once again, the Arkansas defense should be special on third downs, and …

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Saturday

What’s Going To Happen

Grinding won’t be a problem for the home side.

Cincinnati held up well last year by dominating in the red zone – the D occasionally bent, but didn’t break – it was third in the nation in takeaways, and now it goes against a team and a style that led the SEC in fewest turnovers.

This might not be anything pretty, but Arkansas will grind its way to a win. Hog QB KJ Jefferson is a massive key here. He doesn’t have to be the best player on the field, but he probably will be.

2022 Preseason CFN American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year

QB Clayton Tune, Sr. Houston

Can Tune be for Houston what Desmond Ridder was for Cincinnati last year? The numbers should be strong – SMU QB Tanner Mordecai might have the better passing season, though – but it’s more than that. Tune is the veteran leader on what should be the best team in the American Athletic Conference – and the stats aren’t bad, either.

He hit 68% of his passes for 3,546 yards and 30 touchdowns and ten picks, ran for 154 yards and two touchdowns, and led the way to a terrific 12-win season with a bowl victory. Now Houston is looking for even more.

2022 Preseason CFN American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year

LB Deshawn Pace, Jr. Cincinnati

Call this a projection that Pace takes his game up a few notches and becomes an even bigger terror for offenses.

An underappreciated all-around hybrid linebacker – he only earned Honorable Mention All-AAC honors last year – the 6-2, 215-pounder was all over the field making 95 tackles with 9.5 tackles for loss and four picks, highlighted by a huge one against Indiana. It’s not really his role, but if he becomes more of a pass rusher, he’ll be a gamewrecker.

American Athletic Conference Preseason Predictions For Every Game: Preview 2022

American Athletic Conference predictions for every team and every game in the 2022 college football season

The American Athletic Conference is about to go through its final season with a whole lot of fun before all the changes come.

If you want wacky, and if you want unpredictable, here you go.

The future Big 12 programs – Cincinnati, Houston, and UCF – should be the stars, but others are going to be just good enough to provide a push or even trip them up. Unfortunately, the Cougars don’t play the Bearcats or Knights.

Get ready for the inconsistencies with teams like East Carolina and Memphis being up and down, depending on the timing of the biggest games, SMU and Tulane will be interesting, and USF and Navy should be just improved enough to pull off a few interesting performances.

Remember, the American Athletic Conference doesn’t have divisions. The top two teams in the final standings will play for the title. It should come down to the last few games with the drama at a high level up until the very end.

Cincinnati Bearcats Preview 2022

Well that went just fine.

Completely and totally memory dump what happened – or didn’t happen – in the College Football Playoff loss to Alabama. That doesn’t really matter, because …

Cincinnati was in the freaking College Football Playoff.

Cincinnati got the benefit of the doubt from the panel of CFP judges over the Big 12 Champion, Notre Dame, and Ohio State. It was among the four best teams in the country at the end of the season – Wisconsin, Texas A&M, USC, Florida, Texas, Auburn, Penn State are all big programs that have yet to get into the CFP – and it managed to get through the scrutiny, the doubters, and the college football infrastructure to get a shot.

And now Cincinnati has to prove it can keep it all going as it prepares for life in the Big 12 next year.

Of course there will be a wee bit of a step back, and of course it’s asking for way too much to get the same breaks and the same big performances in key moments, but head coach Luke Fickell has created a powerhouse with staying power.

There’s still a ton of talent, the schedule isn’t that bad, and even if this isn’t another College Football Playoff run, it should still be another big year.

Cincinnati Bearcats Preview 2022: Offense

The 2021 Cincinnati offense wasn’t quite as dominant as you might think. It averaged over 36 points per game, but it only finished 58th in the nation in total offense, the running game wasn’t totally dominant, and the passing game wasn’t always explosive.

However, the Bearcats were wildly efficient, they came through time and again when they had to, and they often found a gear to turn games from close battles to routes in a hiccup. Now they have to find the skill guys.

Start with the big positive – the line will be a rock. The skill parts will need a little bit, but the front five should get everyone back including three All-AAC stars. The Bearcats were among the best in the nation in tackles for loss allowed and were fine in pass protection, and that’s not changing. This group will give everyone time to work.

Desmond Ridder, Jerome Ford, Alec Pierce. The main men for the attack last year are now off to the NFL, but the receiving corps should be fine with most of the other pass catchers back along with TE Josh Whyle. The veteran line will make the ground attack work with LSU transfer Corey Kiner a good back to rotate with Ryan Montgomery. That will all be fine, but …

Is Evan Prater ready to replace Ridder? Cincinnati-turned-Eastern-Michigan-turned-Cincinnati veteran Ben Bryant is in the mix, too, but this should be Prater’s gig to lose.

Cincinnati Bearcats Preview 2022: Defense

The offense might have lost a ton of star power, but most of the starters are back. The defense loses both the top guys and the bulk talent.

There are still plenty of great players back from the nation’s 10th-best defense that forced takeaways in bunches, but Cincinnati isn’t Alabama or Ohio State. You don’t just replace the NFL talent last year’s defense had without blinking. However …

This was a relatively deep team that got plenty of parts in the mix last year. The linebacking corps loses the team’s top two tacklers, but Deshawn Pace is back after earning all-star honors – this group isn’t starting from scratch.

The line also has decent parts back. Malik Vann has to be a bigger factor on one end, and 315-pound former Virginia transfer Jowon Briggs has to become an anchor in the interior.

But the line will be fine, the linebackers will be fine, and …

The secondary is a problem. This is where it’s asking for the world to come up with NFL-level corners like Sauce Gardner and Coby Bryant. Even tougher to replace might be new Kansas City Chief Bryan Cook – second round draft pick safeties are premium players.

All is not lost, though, with Ja’von Hicks a good hold over at safety and three-interception corner Arquon Bush ready to do more.

Ahhhhhh yes, Week 0. The soft opening.

The college football season gets rolling for real next week, but first we all get up to speed with a modest slate of games that matter. There might not be a ton of massive games – or any – and there isn’t anything for the College Football Playoff chase.

But it’s college football, it counts, and you’re going to enjoy it.

There’s a limited number of games – usually this piece tries to pick from all the glut of options for a normal Saturday – but here are 5 best bets just in case you choose to invest this weekend.

We’ll start out with two for the price of one …

5. Wyoming at Illinois & Northwestern vs Nebraska point totals

LINE Wyoming vs Illinois 44, Northwestern vs Nebraska 49.5
Point Total Picks Under

No argument if you want to go over on these two games – you don’t win friends with the under – but …

It’s Week 0. We’re all guessing without any preseason to go off of. It’s a mistake to assume that 2021 will carry over to 2022 – new teams, new coaches in some sports, new schemes – but the general Week 0 theme is to go with what you know until proven otherwise.

Wyoming, Illinois, Northwestern, Nebraska – can any of them score?

44 is an obnoxiously low college football point total – 24-21 and you lose – considering it’s always possible that one team can hit that by itself, but until they show us something different, Wyoming and Illinois might struggle to get there.

This is more about the Cowboys. They rose up and rocked against a Utah State team that didn’t need the game late last year, and they hung up 52 on a Kent State defense that was but a polite suggestion, but they lost their key skill guys through the transfer portal, should bring a solid defense, and Illinois isn’t going to be an offensive juggernaut.

The Illini will do their part, though. Wyoming is going to struggle.

Northwestern and Nebraska in Dublin, Ireland, almost certainly isn’t going to be a firefight.

The Wildcats will try to grind this down, the defense should be far better than the version that gave up 56 to the Huskers last year, and 50 between the two might be asking for a lot.

After the big day against Northwestern, Nebraska failed to hit 30 points the rest of the way.
