Maryland vs Charlotte Game Preview

Why Maryland Will Win

Charlotte has been awful.

The defense couldn’t do anything to slow down Florida Atlantic in a blowout loss in the Week 0 opener, and it was even worse in the ugly 41-24 loss to William & Mary allowing over 300 rushing yards and three scores.

Maryland was able to hit Buffalo with ease through the air for close to 300 passing yards and got a big dash to crank up the rushing production. It wasn’t always smooth, so this is the game to get the offensive line in a lather.

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Charlotte Will Win

So what’s going right so far for the 49ers?

The passing game hasn’t been all that bad – even if it hasn’t always been accurate – the defense is generating a little bit of pressure behind the line, and maybe this is the game when the line holds up better.

Again, Maryland had one big run against Buffalo, but other than that the ground attack stalled a bit too much. Charlotte QB Xavier Williams is dangerous on the move – he could get the call if starter Chris Reynolds is still hurt with an arm injury and if James Foster can’t get anything going.

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

The Charlotte defense hasn’t even been close in any phase. The run defense has been bad, the secondary worse, and Maryland should take advantage of all of it on the road.

It might not kick in right away – the 49ers will come up with a strong first quarter – and then the floodgates will open.

Charlotte vs William & Mary Game Preview

Why William & Mary Will Win

Will Charlotte be fully focused?

It started the season with a Week 0 43-13 blowout loss to Florida Atlantic and gets Maryland right after dealing with William & Mary.

The Tribe have a 1-2 rushing punch of Bronson Yoder and Donavyn Lester to lead a deep running game that should be the best in the CAA again.

The offensive line is good enough to keep the 49er defense from doing too much in the backfield, the defensive line has the parts to come up with a good rotation – the run D will be great, and …

Week 1 Expert Picks, Thursday & Friday

Why Charlotte Will Win

Charlotte getting that game against Florida Atlantic will be a plus – even if it got ugly.

The team got the live hitting part out of the way, and it should have the timing down a bit better after struggling to get things moving in the second half.

Yes, William & Mary will be good on the lines, and the running game will be strong, but Charlotte should be able to run the ball without a problem thanks to a loaded group of backs in a good rotation, and QB Chris Reynolds has his top receivers returning.

Again, getting the timing down against FAU matters, the 49ers aren’t going to convert just two of 11 third down tries again, and …

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Thursday & Friday

What’s Going To Happen

William & Mary won’t have the passing game to keep up if and when Charlotte gets out to a good start.

The big question mark for the 49ers is the secondary, and the defense is starting with a few new parts, but again, the Tribe’s offense won’t be dangerous enough to take advantage of that.

The Charlotte offense will take over right away.

2022 Preseason CFN Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year

QB Frank Harris, Sr. UTSA

Last year it was RB Sincere McCormick – along with a solid defense – that took over on way to the Conference USA title and a breakthrough season for the UTSA program. The quarterback was pretty good, too.

The 6-0, 200-pound lefty was the main man leading the way, and now this is his team more than ever after two terrific seasons. Harris has connected on 66% of his career passes, kept the interceptions down with six in each of the last two years, and in 2021 he started hitting his deep throws a bit more. Combine all of that with over 1,200 rushing yards and 15 scores, and this might be his league, too.

2022 Preseason CFN Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year

LB KD Davis, Sr. North Texas

The 6-0, 229-pounder isn’t huge, and he might not have the build of a normal middle linebacker, but he’s got great range and he makes a whole lot of tackles.

The 2021 First Team and 2020 Honorable Mention All-Conference USA honoree made 284 tackles – leading Conference USA with 121 stops – with 11 sacks and 28 tackles for loss over the last three seasons for a team not known for its defense. In his fifth year, expect him to be even more disruptive.

Conference USA Preseason Predictions For Every Game: Preview 2022

Conference USA preseason predictions for every game, predicted order of finish, and lookahead to the 2022 season.

Just how much does it hurt Conference USA to lose Marshall, Old Dominion, and Southern Miss to the Sun Belt this season?

The league had to quickly scramble this offseason to change up its schedule, it’s having to do even more to keep the business going with Charlotte, FAU, North Texas, Rice, UAB and UTSA bolting in 2023 – Liberty, New Mexico State, Sam Houston and Jacksonville State will enter the fun – and all of that will likely be the main focus of the 2022 season.

And then UAB, UTSA and WKU should be the stars of the conference again.

Where’s the big surprise going to come from?

The problem is that too many schedules have too many tough non-conference games, but it should be entertaining as several teams will likely be fighting for bowl eligibility over the final few weeks.

Knowing there’s going to be a crazy outlier to screw this all up, here are the 2022 Conference USA preseason predictions.

Charlotte 49ers Preview 2022

The 49ers are still trying to find the consistency needed to be a bigger factor in Conference USA.

The breakthrough bowl season in 2019 was fun, the 2-4 season in 2020 was because of 2020 – there weren’t any bad losses among the four – and last year a bowl game was well within each, but the defense went bye-bye over a three game losing streak to close out the year.

The experience is there to be better after a decent season, but it’ll be all about the improvement on the other side of the ball.

The new-look Conference USA schedule just got a lot easier, but it’s still going to be a fight to get close to six wins if the D isn’t far, far better. But first …

Charlotte 49ers Preview 2022: Offense

Again, overall the offense wasn’t all that bad. It would’ve been nice to get more out of the ground game, but the attack blew a tire during the middle of the season. Even so, there were enough times when the offense did the job and the other side didn’t keep up its end of the bargain.

Eight starters are expected back to the spread attack that keeps things moving and does a great job of controlling the time of possession. It starts with …

Veteran quarterback Chris Reynolds returns for yet another year. He’s not all that big, but he’s a good runner, knows what he’s doing with the passing game, and he doesn’t turn the ball over enough to matter.

The tip three receivers are back with a good-sized group – the 49ers recruit to a receiver type that can get down the field. The work gets spread out among Grant DuBose, Victor Tucker, and Elijah Spencer – they’re all 6-2.

All of the top rushers are back. Calvin Camp and former Iowa transfer Shadrick Byrd for a good rotation – they combined for close to 1,300 yards and seven touchdowns – to go along with Reynolds’ ability to get on the move. They all get to work behind a smallish line that gets four starters back and isn’t bad at keeping defenses out of the backfield.

Charlotte 49ers Preview 2022: Defense

The defense had a few problems. It was among the worst in the country in pass efficiency defense, allowed 465 yards per game overall, was the worst in Conference USA at getting into the backfield, and it allowed 34 points per game. Other than that, everything was great.

At least the 49ers have enough experience to build around, but overall this group has to be far better considering the time it gets to rest thanks to the offense. Making matters worse …

Three of the top four tacklers are done with the linebacking corps needing to all but start over. This is a smallish group that can move, which is fine as long as there’s production in the backfield. Top sacker Markees Watts is back on the defensive front, but he can’t do it alone.

There’s decent size in the interior line for the rotation. Watts is just 218 pounds and Michael Kelly is 225 pounds on the other side – again, the smallish size is fine as long as everyone is disruptive. Central Michigan transfer Amir Siddiq will play a big role in the rotation.

It wasn’t just that the 49ers allowed teams to bomb away too easily. It’s that there were too many big downfield plays without enough takeaways or key stops. However, the secondary should be an early strength if it’s helped by any sort of a pass rush. The veteran safeties will make a whole lot of plays

Charlotte vs Florida Atlantic Game Preview

Why Charlotte Will Win

This should be a better team than the one that got rolled by Florida Atlantic 38-9 at home last season.

Eight starters return to an offense that’s going to be sharper and better through the air – Chris Reynolds is a good veteran passer who’s in for a big season.

The Florida Atlantic defense is getting boost from the transfer portal, but the pass rush is unproven and the secondary is all but starting over around star safety Teja Young. Reynolds should go off.

However …

Week 0 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Florida Atlantic Will Win

Will the Charlotte defense be better right away?

There’s a ton of experience back, but the production wasn’t there, several of top tacklers are gone, and this should be a work in progress for a D that was miserable at coming up with third down stops and didn’t to a thing against the run.

The Florida Atlantic offensive line should take over with four starters back to keep QB N’Kosi Perry clean against the reworking Charlotte pass rush. The receivers are in place, the running game should be strong out of the gate, and defensively, the linebackers are good enough to keep Reynolds from doing too much on the move.

Week 0 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

The Florida Atlantic offense was almost perfectly balanced in last year’s blowout win over the 49ers, and the defense didn’t allow anything on the ground.

It’s not going to be quite that easy for the Owls – the Charlotte passing game will be more productive – but it’ll be a good start to the season with a strong Conference USA home win.

It’s a new world for Conference USA with the loss of Marshall, Old Dominion, and Southern Miss over to the Sun Belt. There are still plenty of good teams still around, but the league is hanging on through the expansion process.

Can 2021’s star teams keep it all going? UTSA and WKU won’t be quite as good, UAB should be strong, and UTEP might just keep on stunning.

If Florida Atlantic can rise up after a down season, and if North Texas and Middle Tennessee can be bowl-worthy again, it should be a fun run.

Old Dominion vs Charlotte Game Preview

Why Charlotte Will Win

Can the 49ers actually close the deal?

They’ve been on the cusp of bowl eligibility for the last few weeks, but they’ve lost four of their las five games even though the offense is working.

The passing attack has hit 245 yards or more in four of the last five games, there’s just enough of a running game to control the clock, and considering the problems with consistency, forcing takeaways would be a big deal.

For all of the good things Old Dominion is doing, it has a turnover problem with two or more in seven straight games before last week’s win over Middle Tennessee – which, strangely enough, came against the nation’s leading defense in takeaways.

What’s Going To Happen

Charlotte’s defense can’t stop the run.

The winner of this goes bowling. At home, Old Dominion will complete the phenomenal turnaround to its season by running the ball without a problem against the porous Charlotte defensive front.
