NBA G League Elite Camp 2022: Top performers from Day 2 in Chicago

Rookie Wire took a look at some of the best performances from the second and final day of the NBA G League Elite Camp.

The NBA G League Elite Camp resumed on Tuesday for its second and final day as draft-eligible prospects competed in front of scouts, coaches and front-office executives in Chicago, Illinois.

In total, 44 individuals were selected to participate in the event this year. The first day saw several players emerge above the rest with the likes of Marcus Sasser (Houston), Jalen Wilson (Kansas) and Darius Days (LSU) among those that stood out.

With the event wrapping up, other prospects showed out on the second day in an attempt to impress those talent-evaluators on hand. Rookie Wire took a look at some of the best performances from Tuesday.

Magic react to winning the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft lottery

Orlando won the No. 1 pick for the first time since 2004 when it drafted Dwight Howard.

Orlando Magic president Jeff Weltman on Tuesday expressed his excitement that the organization will have the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA draft after winning the selection in the lottery in Chicago, Illinois.

The Magic received their fourth No. 1 pick in franchise history and first since 2004 when they drafted Dwight Howard. They, along with the Houston Rockets and Detroit Pistons, had a 14% chance of winning after finishing with one of the three worst records in the NBA.

Orlando previously won the lottery in back-to-back years in 1992 when it selected Shaquille O’Neal. They drafted Chris Webber the following year but traded his rights to the Golden State Warriors for Penny Hardaway and three first-round picks.

The impact of winning figures to have lasting effects on the team.

“It means we get to choose who we feel is the best fit for our team and who we feel will have the biggest long-range impact,” Weltman said. “Obviously, with that will come a lot of conversations. It will be interesting to see some of the calls that come up but mostly it means that we get to familiarize ourselves now with the elite prospects that we can add to our team.”

The Magic will enter the draft process now in control of their fate. Weltman said the team will do its due diligence on those prospects in the conversation to be the top pick and will carefully meet with each of them to determine the best long-term fit.

Duke forward Paolo Banchero, Gonzaga center Chet Holmgren and Auburn forward Jabari Smith Jr. — who were all on hand in Chicago — are considered to be the front-runners and will meet in the coming weeks with the Magic.

“I think there are a lot of elite-level prospects at the top of this draft,” Weltman said. “I do feel that as they start to make the rounds, teams will start to fall in love with guys, which is what generally happens. Generally, the leverage will kind of unfold from there but I know we’ll have a lot of interesting discussions with teams. We don’t go into this thing looking to trade our pick. We’ll look to add a really talented young, high-character guy to our roster.”

The Magic hadn’t experienced much luck in the lottery after winning the top pick three times by 2004. The team had been in the lottery seven times prior to this year since trading Howard in 2012 and failed to improve on its odds each time.

Their luck changed this time around, and it could have been because of a last-minute change.

Weltman was originally chosen to represent the team on stage at the McCormick Place Convention Center. However, the team changed its mind and instead sent head coach Jamahl Mosley in his place, resulting in his biggest win since assuming the position last year.

“I haven’t been very good at this,” Weltman said of the change. “Coach was feeling lucky and we let him roll the dice. Tonight, he is the Coach of the Year.”

Weltman admitted luck is always needed in certain situations and every team needs things to break their way, especially on the night of the draft lottery. Call it fate or some really good luck brought on by Mosley, but the Magic will happily take their latest No. 1 selection.

Utah State forward Justin Bean: ‘I’m letting my story write itself’

Rookie Wire recently caught up with Bean to discuss the pre-draft process, what he is looking to showcase to teams and much more.

When Justin Bean first joined Utah State University as a walk-on in 2017, he never envisioned the type of success he’d eventually see with the Aggies over the next five years.

Now, Bean is looking to continue his run at the next level.

Bean was named to the All-Mountain West second team last season after averaging a career-high 17.4 points, 9.9 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.6 steals in 34 games. He led the team in scoring, rebounding, steals and field goals made (227).

He leaves the program near the top of the leaderboard in several categories.

Bean is one of three Aggies players ever to haul in at least 1,000 career rebounds as his 1,027 total boards are second in program history. He had the most career games with at least 10 rebounds (57) and the second-most double-doubles (46).

“I would be lying to you if I said that I would be in this position,” Bean told Rookie Wire. “A lot of people dream about playing in the NBA since they’re little kids but for me, I was just trying to get a scholarship, honestly. That was my goal to find my way and earn a scholarship and a four-year degree.”

The 25-year-old established himself as one of the top scorers and rebounders in the country. He finished sixth in double-doubles (20) and was one of only eight Divison I players to average at least 17 points and 9.5 rebounds this season.

Bean also ranked highly in a couple of advanced metrics, too.

He was 10th in the country in box plus-minus (9.3) and fifth in points per game when cutting to the basket. He was efficient in catch-and-shoot opportunities and knocked down a blistering 46.5% from 3-point range.

Following the season, Bean declared for the NBA draft and is currently training in Chicago. He recently competed in the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament, an annual scouting event comprised of the top 64 seniors in the country.

Bean emerged as a standout after three games in Portsmouth, earning All-Tournament team honors. He averaged 11.3 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.3 steals on 50% shooting from the field and was named Player of the Game in his second contest, recording 24 points and 10 rebounds.

Rookie Wire recently caught up with Bean to discuss the pre-draft process, what he is looking to showcase to teams, his collegiate career and much more.

In total, 44 individuals were selected to participate in the event this year with the top performers eventually earning invitations to compete in the draft combine. The first day of action saw plenty of notable efforts with every player hitting the court.

Rip Hamilton to represent Pistons at NBA draft lottery

The Pistons enter the lottery as one of three teams with the highest odds of winning the top pick after finishing with a 23-59 record.

Former NBA champion and Detroit Pistons legend Rip Hamilton will represent the organization at the NBA draft lottery on Tuesday in Chicago, Illinois, the team announced.

The Pistons enter the lottery as one of three teams with the highest odds of winning the top pick after finishing with a 23-59 record. They had the third-worst record in the NBA and have a 14% chance of receiving the No. 1 overall pick.

Of course, Detroit won the lottery last year and eventually selected Cade Cunningham with the first pick from Oklahoma State. Cunningham was the Pistons’ first No. 1 pick since the late Bob Lanier in 1970.

The Pistons were represented last year by Hall of Famer Ben Wallace. Certainly, they will be hoping another franchise legend will be enough good luck to receive the No. 1 pick and draft at the top of the board for the second year in a row.

The draft lottery is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. EDT on ESPN.
