Trevor Lawrence’s 52-yard pass to Laviska Shenault Jr. was historically awesome

Trevor Lawrence has had his struggles this season, but his 52-yard pass to Laviska Shenault Jr. was historically notable.

Through the first three weeks of the 2021 season, the Jacksonville Jaguars have not been shy about letting first-overall pick Trevor Lawrence turn it loose with the deep ball. Per Pro Football Focus, Lawrence was tied with Aaron Rodgers and Mac Jones with 16 attempts of 20 or more air yards, fourth-most in the league. And on those 16 deep attempts, Lawrence had completed six passes for 162 yards, three touchdowns, three interceptions, and a passer rating of 75.5.

Kind of a mixed bag, but not bad for a rookie who hasn’t always benefited from the most expansive passing game.

But the connection Lawrence had with receiver Laviska Shenault Jr. with 2:23 left in the first half was as good a throw as you’ll see this season.

Lawrence did a great job of rolling to his right, setting his feet, squaring his shoulders to the target, and uncorking one heck of a throw. Cornerback Trae Waynes, who missed the entire 2020 season with a torn pectoral muscle and didn’t play in the first three weeks of the 2021 season with hamstring issues, was the innocent bystander here.

How great was this throw with its combination of running speed and passing depth? Historically so.

The Jaguars led the Bengals 14-0 at the half. It was the first time Jacksonville shut out an opponent on the road since Week 7 of the 2017 season against the Indianapolis Colts. The Jaguars haven’t won a game since Week 1 of the 2020 season, but so far, so good.

TNT’s NHL broadcast is already more fun than NBC’s ever was, growing pains and all

If this is the future of NHL broadcasts, I’m on board.

A new hockey season is just around the corner, and with it comes a change many have been hoping for.

Since 2005, hockey fans have only known NBC’s exclusive coverage of the NHL. That all changes for the 2021-22 season and beyond, as ESPN and TNT now share media rights to NHL broadcasts for the next seven years. No longer will hockey fans have to suffer through NBC’s inability to cover and market the sport of hockey — nor hear from the likes of Mike Milbury — ever again.

We’ve yet to officially see ESPN’s side of the broadcast, but on Thursday, hockey fans got their first look at what TNT is bringing to the table with a Philadelphia Flyers versus Boston Bruins preseason game. The result? A refreshing but incredibly glitchy — and oddly enjoyable — mess!

Things started pretty well for TNT, with the debut of their minimalistic scorebug and graphics package, which caught the eye of many hockey fans.

Once intermission rolled around, hockey fans saw more of the changes in store for their viewing experience on TNT, as well as some of the growing pains. TNT intermission analysts — Liam McHugh, Anson Carter and Rick Tocchet — were seated off-center at the desk. For the majority of the first intermission segment, Tocchet’s mic was off and the audio levels were out of sync.

And yet, everything came together for one brief, shining moment as Tocchet demonstrated exactly what NHL players should do to stop being cross-checked in a hilarious off-desk skit.

TNT even has a rules analyst — former NHL referee Dan Koharski — on the air as well, much like the NFL has for their broadcasts.

After the first intermission, however, is where the real problems began.

Throughout most of the second period, TNT’s broadcast either glitched out terribly — looking at times distinctly like a VHS tape from the 1990s — or completely stopped working entirely.

Things seemed to be mostly resolved by the start of the third period, but that is definitely a rough showing by TNT from a technical side.

And yet, when working, TNT’s broadcast felt like a breath of fresh air after years of NBC’s stagnant showings. Yes, TNT’s glitches weren’t a good first step forward, but I’m willing to give them a bit of leniency here because it’s the preseason and everyone is working the rust off.

I already like the chaotic energy McHugh, Carter, and Tocchet bring to the intermission shows, though it would be nice to see more women on the desk outside of being contributors. It’s early returns for sure, but so far I have yet to have an inclination to mute the intermission show and listen to something more entertaining.

Honestly, right now my biggest quibble with TNT’s broadcasts is that the current team of Kenny Albert and Eddie Olczyk with Keith Jones in between the benches are all voices we’ve heard on NBC broadcasts before. They are great at their jobs, yes, but it really would have made the moment-to-moment action feel refreshed with some new or up-and-coming voices.

For all of the glitches, mishaps, and slight objections, I’m already having more fun with TNT’s broadcasts than I ever did with NBC. Sure, it’s still early and things can easily unravel from here, but I see a lot of potential for the NHL on TNT group to grow into the kind of broadcast hockey fans have been wanting for years.

Over the years, NBA on TNT has set the bar high for fun and informative broadcasts. While hockey still has a long way to go to reach that point, Thursday’s first broadcast from TNT was a fresh start for a sport that needed it the most.

Arizona State vs UCLA Game Preview

Why Arizona State Will Win

The talent is there to come up with a big offensive performance against a UCLA D that’s good, but will give up yards.

The Sun Devils overcame the loss at BYU with a solid 35-13 at Colorado, with Jayden Daniels and the passing game taking over and the D dominating the struggling Buff attack.

ASU is moving the chains, the secondary has been strong, and the lines are good enough to hold up against the suddenly physical Bruins. Able to move the chains well and control the clock – helped by that D that gets off the field – the Sun Devils should dictate the tempo against a team that loves to make teams play its way.

However …

Week 5 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why UCLA Will Win

Arizona State beat Southern Utah, UNLV, and Colorado. None of those three have an offense, and the team failed the test at BYU.

UCLA has been battle tested. It beat LSU. It beat Stanford. It was a stop away from getting by a strong Fresno State. ASU has yet to prove it can push past adversity.

It starts with the infrastructure. The offensive line has been great at getting the ground game going and is good enough in pass protection. The biggest difference from a few years ago is the defensive front that’s been a rock against the run – it leads the Pac-12 allowing just 64 yards per game.

The Bruins will give up passing yards, but for the most part they’ve been able to hold up. Fresno State’s Jake Haener was the only one able to crack the code in the clutch, but …

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Jayden Daniels is good enough to pull this off if he gets into a groove.

The Arizona State passing game should be able to make this a fight, but UCLA showed against Stanford that it got back on track with a strong game at Stanford.

It’ll be a fun late night game with both offense trading shots, but the ASU running game will be held to a stop, UCLA will be balanced, and penalties will play a huge role.

The Sun Devils are getting crushed by flags – close to 11 per game. Those will matter.

Washington vs Oregon State Game Preview

Why Washington Will Win

Has this finally turned?

Washington was far better than it showed in the loss to Montana, and it wasn’t ready for primetime in the blowout loss to Michigan. The dominant win over Arkansas State was a start, and getting by a pesky Cal last week was a huge step.

The run defense has been fine, the passing game has started to improve, and the team is starting to find a way to get through the problems that are still there – it starts with the turnovers.

The Huskies still have problems giving the ball away, but the D took it away six times in the two wins after not forcing any turnovers in the two losses.

Oregon State might be improving, but it gets flagged way too much, the pass defense is an issue, and the D isn’t able to get off the field. However …

Week 5 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Oregon State Will Win

Oregon State takes the ball away. A lot.

Washington lost to Montana on three turnovers, and it gave the ball away three times against Arkansas State, but they didn’t matter. Oregon State has a few problems with giveaways – five on the year – but it’s been okay. The defense picked off USC four times and has nine takeaway so far.

It’s going to generate turnovers in this.

Oregon State has cranked up the ground attack, ripping through USC for 322 yards with BJ Baylor continuing his phenomenal start to the season averaging 6.9 yards per carry with seven scores.

Washington’s run defense is supposed to be great, but it still has to prove it against a team that commits to the ground attack.

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Oregon State has been just that good, but was the USC game a mirage?

It’s all up to the Washington offense and the how much it turns the ball over. The Beavers have been hit for over 300 yards through the air against all three FBS teams, and the Huskies will get there.

Oregon State will keep the offensive balance going, the D will generate two picks, and the team will continue to be one of the bigger stories of the Pac-12 season.

Washington State vs Cal Game Preview

Why Washington State Will Win

So what’s going right?

The offense isn’t working like it’s supposed to and the pass defense hasn’t been all that great, but there aren’t a lot of penalties and the D hasn’t been bad at taking the ball away with ten overall and two or more in every game.

Cal isn’t having a whole lot of luck, either.

The defense can’t come up with third down stops, the secondary has been lit up, and penalties have been a huge problem for a team desperate to generate a little positive momentum.

This is the week Wazzu’s passing game has to work, because …

Week 5 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Cal Will Win

Cal isn’t giving up anything on the ground – for the most part.

TCU was able to run for 271 yards, but no one else has hit 100 yards so far. Yes, the secondary has been lit up, but overall this really is a good enough defense talent-wise to be better than the numbers.

Offensively, the line hasn’t been bad, QB Chase Garbers is fighting the good fight, and the attack is putting up yards – it’s second in the Pac-12 in total offense, coming up with 441 per game.

All this will take is an early lead and a few stops from the beleaguered defense to pull this off. Washington State’s offense is awful on third downs.

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Cal finally ends up on the right side of the breaks.

Washington State just can’t get the offense going enough to keep up. The team played well early on in games, but it can’t keep up the pace with the rushing attack struggling and without the overall pop to keep up.

Cal might not be pretty, but it’ll take whatever win it can get.

Oregon vs Stanford Game Preview

Why Oregon Will Win

Can the offense continue to be consistently balanced?

It picked a great time to come up with its best running day of the season in the win over Ohio State, and there wasn’t a need to take a whole lot of big chances in the wins over Stony Brook and Arizona. It would’ve been nice to have played better against the Wildcats, but the Ducks were lousy and still managed to win 41-19.

Stanford is doing a lot of things right, but the run defense hasn’t been anything special, there aren’t enough defensive plays in the backfield, and Oregon should be able to take advantage of all of it.

The stats are a tad skewed after Arizona melted down late, but the Ducks lead the nation in takeaways with 13 overall and three or more in every game but the win over Ohio State. However …

Week 5 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Stanford Will Win

Stanford doesn’t have a turnover problem.

The defense hasn’t been able to generate a ton of takeaways – only three so far – but the offense hasn’t given the ball away in the last three games after turning it over twice against Kansas State.

For all of the good things Oregon does, the defense isn’t great on third downs and the pass defense hasn’t been a rock – even beyond the stat-skewing 484 yards against Ohio State.

Last week against UCLA was a stumble, but Tanner McKee continues to product with a season-high 293 yards and three touchdowns in the loss. He’s been good, he’s not making mistakes, and he’s just the type of quarterback who can pull this off if the defense can be a bit tighter.

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Can Oregon keep its focus and keep on winning?

It was able to get away with a loose performance against Arizona, but that’s not happening against Stanford – the Ducks have to be a whole lot sharper or else Mr. McKee will go off.

The Cardinal run defense won’t be good enough, and with no real pressure to keep Oregon QB Anthony Brown from relaxing and making the easy throws. It won’t be a breeze, but Brown will be effective enough to control the clock and the tempo.

Report: D.J. Chark Jr. suffered fractured ankle, out indefinitely

Chark was carted off the field against Cincinnati, and according to Ian Rapoport, the injury is serious.

It looks like Jacksonville may have to brave the rest of the season without one of its best offensive players. According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the injury that resulted in receiver D.J. Chark Jr. being carted off the field on the Jaguars opening drive was a fractured ankle.

This is a massive loss for a Jags offense that was already struggling to find its footing with a rookie quarterback under center in Trevor Lawrence. Now, expect leading receiver Marvin Jones Jr. to see even more targets moving forward with Chark possibly being out for a while (if not the rest of the season).

Tyron Johnson could take Chark’s place as a starter, but it’s also possible that Tavon Austin, who was placed on the injured reserve to begin the season but made his Jags debut on Thursday night against the Bengals, will take over that spot.

Regardless, the depth of the receiver group will be tested big-time without Chark, and there will be a lot of pressure on Jones and Laviska Shenault Jr. to replace his production.

Jags jump up early against Bengals with a 6-yard James Robinson rush

The Jags seem to be learning from their mistakes of Weeks 1-2 and have continued to feed James Robinson early (as they did during Week 3) in their TNF battle with Cincinnati.

The Jacksonville Jaguars got off to a quick start in their Thursday night battle with the Cincinnati Bengals, and while their first drive resulted in no points, their second one ended up getting them seven.

The drive was an eight-play process where Trevor Lawrence was able to spread the ball around, hitting receiver Tavon Austin and new tight end Dan Arnold (for a nice 17-yard gain) among notables. To cap it off the Jags went to their only top-100 player in James Robinson, who was able to run it in for six yards and get his second consecutive touchdown of this season (he had one Week 3, too).

The Jags entered this game without Carlos Hyde and the announcers of Thursday’s game said he was inactive with a shoulder injury. The team is also without DJ Chark who fractured his ankle in the first drive. That said, Robinson is likely going to be their guy heading forward and he’s shown he’s capable of handling the workload.
