Why Cal Will Win

Everyone saw the Bears come up just short in the loss to Notre Dame, but they’ve been very quietly playing very, very well.

The 20-14 win over UNLV seemed like too close of a call against a mediocre team, but as it turns out, it was a strong defensive performance against a breakthrough offensive team.

Arizona was coming in off a big win over North Dakota State, and it couldn’t stop anything the Cal tried to do on the ground.

The team has been relatively adaptable. It got a good defensive performance against the Irish, got Jack Plummer and the passing game going in then first few weeks, and last week Jayden Ott ran for 274 yards and four scores against the Wildcats.

Control the clock, win the turnover battle – it can and should do both in this, but …

Why Washington State Will Win

The Cougars have been great.

They survived Wisconsin with a few key takeaways in a gut check performance when the offense wasn’t going well, they got into a wild fourth quarter shootout in the loss last week to Oregon, and all along they’ve been solid up front.

The pass rush has been among the best in the nation so far, the running game has had its moments – even if that’s not the team’s mode of transportation – and transfer QB Cameron Ward has shown his experience and ability through  tight moments and a few mistakes.

Can Cal with the turnover battle?

The Bears have been air tight with the ball so far with just two turnovers, and Washington has had issues with mistakes.

The Cougars have turned if over ten times in four games with at least two giveaways in each. They’ve been able to survive the problems, but the giveaways will keep Cal in this.

And then Ward and the passing attack will overcome the errors.

Why Washington State Will Win

So what’s going right?

The offense isn’t working like it’s supposed to and the pass defense hasn’t been all that great, but there aren’t a lot of penalties and the D hasn’t been bad at taking the ball away with ten overall and two or more in every game.

Cal isn’t having a whole lot of luck, either.

The defense can’t come up with third down stops, the secondary has been lit up, and penalties have been a huge problem for a team desperate to generate a little positive momentum.

Why Cal Will Win

Cal isn’t giving up anything on the ground – for the most part.

TCU was able to run for 271 yards, but no one else has hit 100 yards so far. Yes, the secondary has been lit up, but overall this really is a good enough defense talent-wise to be better than the numbers.

Offensively, the line hasn’t been bad, QB Chase Garbers is fighting the good fight, and the attack is putting up yards – it’s second in the Pac-12 in total offense, coming up with 441 per game.

All this will take is an early lead and a few stops from the beleaguered defense to pull this off. Washington State’s offense is awful on third downs.

What’s Going To Happen

Cal finally ends up on the right side of the breaks.

Washington State just can’t get the offense going enough to keep up. The team played well early on in games, but it can’t keep up the pace with the rushing attack struggling and without the overall pop to keep up.

Cal might not be pretty, but it’ll take whatever win it can get.

Why Cal Will Win

Washington State’s defense isn’t stopping anyone on third downs.

It’s only been a three game sample size, but so far, the Cougars have been hit for conversions 50% of the time or more in each of the three games, and it’s been a problem for any sort of consistency.

Cal’s offense can’t do much of anything, but the defense hasn’t been totally miserable, the team is able to control the clock just enough to combat one of Wazzu’s main positive – time of possession – and there aren’t enough turnovers and mistakes to give away a whole slew of breaks.

Throw in a secondary that hasn’t been getting gouged, and the Bears will give up yards and points, but they should be able to get off the field enough to keep down the Washington State offense. But …

Why Washington State Will Win

The Cougars can still throw.

This might not be the high-flying fun show of the Mike Leach era, and there weren’t any downfield shots working against USC last week, but the offense should be able to push for well over 200 yards.

Cal isn’t getting enough out of its offense. That’s a wee bit by design with an attack that relies on ball control and strong defense, but not really … the O just isn’t all that good.

This isn’t a Cal team that’s going to step on the field and put up 50 points. Being a +2 in turnover margin helped the cause in the first win of the year – beating Oregon 21-17 last week – and the Cougar turnover problems against USC should be more of a blip than a real issue.

What’s Going To Happen

Cal is going on its third road game in the five games, Washington State is back home, and this should be a dead even game between two teams that could never quite get going.

Washington State was able to get by Oregon State with a balanced attack and 229 rushing yards, but that’s not happening against the Cal D. It won’t be pretty, but the Bears will get their second win in a grind of a game.
