College Football Playoff Committee rejects proposal for playoff expansion

The College Football Playoff Committee has rejected the Pac-12 proposal for playoff expansion in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

(This story was originally published on Longhorns Wire.)

The idea of a College Football Playoff expansion has been a hot topic of discussion in the last several years. Under the current model, only four teams get a shot at the National Champion each year. There are two semifinal games with the winners meeting 10 days later to decide a champion. In the current climate with conferences playing a different number of games, some starting later than others it would be perfect situation to test the waters.

However, Heather Dinich of ESPN is reporting that the committee squashed the idea. At least this year. In her report, one Power Five commissioner pitched the idea of an eight-team playoff.

“They decided that doing that now would be such a significant change, and come with so many challenges, especially given the timing with the season already underway, that they concluded that the best outcome would be to make no changes in the format,” Hancock told ESPN. “They will continue to discuss the future, which is just good, responsible business practice, although I must say that dealing with COVID has become everyone’s focus now.”

While it is a valid point that it might be a bit late in the game this year for expansion, it should have already been on the docket for discussion. As it sits right now, most projections have Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State and Florida as the playoff teams for this season. The Pac-12 and Big Ten conferences aren’t starting their season until late October.

Due to the fact that there are little to no nonconference games, the ability to pick which teams will make it is a difficult one. Expansion would only help those teams who were just on the outside. Maybe a team like Central Florida who has run the table before but not received a fair shake due to the Power Five schools at the top.

As Stanford head coach David Shaw stated, it is going to happen at some point. So maybe there is hope for next season but for now it will move forward with just four teams in 2020.

Notre Dame bowl projections take hit as Big Ten/Pac-12 Return

With all Power Five programs returning to college football, Notre Dame’s bowl projections took a hit in terms of pedigree this week.

As we’ve been looking at bowl projections since even before the start of the 2020 college football season we’ve seen Notre Dame headed to a few interesting places but most recently it’s been a pretty consistent guess by most that the Orange Bowl would be where the Irish wound up.

That’s not the case anymore according to 247Sports as they released their latest round of bowl projections and have Notre Dame headed to a familiar destination after the inclusion of the Big Ten and Pac-12 to the projections for the first time.

A year ago Notre Dame beat up Iowa State of the Big 12 in the Camping World Bowl and that site is the same place 247Sports has them headed again, even though the game has been changed to the Cheez-It Bowl.

247Sports Bowl Projection for September 30:

Cheez-It Bowl
Camping World Stadium
Orlando, Florida
Notre Dame vs. Texas

Perhaps the notable part here isn’t that Notre Dame isn’t projected to go to the New Year’s Six but that currently undefeated Texas isn’t been seen as the winner of the Big 12 quite yet.

With that said, with hopes of the College Football Playoff at best and the New Year’s Six at worst, I’m guessing most Notre Dame fans would be pretty disappointed if the season ended with a second straight trip to Orlando.

Big Ten announces COVID-19 testing partnership

The Big Ten announced a partnership with Biodesix and Quidel Corporation to oversee and administer daily, rapid antigen testing.

One of the main hurdles that was cleared to allow Big Ten football to come back this fall was the ability to administer daily, rapid COVID-19 testing. To be able to do so allows a team to go on the field knowing that it isn’t spreading the virus to its opponent or among itself.

Once that was a reality the conference was more willing to bring football back in the heartland, and so it was. However, what wasn’t known is where this daily testing that was to begin on September 30 would be coming from.

Now we do.

According to a release from the Big Ten on Wednesday, it has formed a partnership with Biodesix, Inc. and Quidel Corporation.

Biodesix will administer and oversee the Quidel FDA-authorized SOFIA 2 SARS rapid antigen test for all fourteen Big Ten members. The partnership will provide comprehensive surveillance testing for SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19) for all student-athletes and staff personnel involved in close contact sports competition. Any positive results will then be referred to the appropriate student-athlete’s medical staff for further confirmation and contact tracing.

“Along with its medical and scientific capabilities as a certified laboratory, Biodesix is committed to helping the Big Ten meet the testing requirements and reporting protocols established by the medical subcommittee and adopted by the Big Ten Council of Presidents and Chancellors (COP/C),” said Dr. Jim Borchers, Head Team Physician, The Ohio State University, and co-chair of the Big Ten Conference Return to Competition Task Force medical subcommittee.  In the statement provided, Dr. Borchers added, “Quidel’s rapid antigen testing technology represents the ability to perform COVID-19 surveillance testing on a large scale with prompt results.”

The appropriate personnel from Biodesix will be on sight this week as the first shipments of the Quidel tests arrive at all fourteen institutions. Along with its designated contractor, Maxim Healthcare Staffing Services, Inc., it will assume immediate responsibility for the oversight and administration of the testing.

“The partnership with Biodesix and Quidel is an important step toward achieving our mission of keeping our student-athletes, and the communities that support them, healthy and safe,” said Big Ten Commissioner Kevin Warren. “The data we are scheduled to collect, and the research component of this partnership, will provide major contributions to all 14 Big Ten institutions as they study COVID-19 and attempt to mitigate the spread of SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19) among wider communities.”

This is an important step in having Big Ten football remain on campuses this fall, and it’s great that the conference went out and obtained these partnerships independent of the conference to make sure that the experts in the field are overseeing the safety of the student-athletes during this pandemic.

Ex-Celtic Jonathan Gibson taking Jeremy Lin’s spot with Beijing Ducks

Former Boston Celtic reserve guard Jonathan Gibson has inked a deal with the Beijing Ducks in the CBA, replacing ex-NBAer Jeremy Lin.

Former Boston Celtics reserve point guard Jonathan Gibson has signed a deal with the Beijing Ducks of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) according to Yahoo Sports’ Keith Smith.

Gibson, a product of New Mexico State who went undrafted in the 2010 NBA Draft, first linked up with the Celtics in 2012 as a member of their Summer League team, and would later join the team on an end-of-season deal in April of 2018.

He’d return again the following season to help fill out a banged-up regular-season roster, but did not take the floor for the team in his second stint.

The West Covina, California native has since played for several CBA clubs and the Windy City Bulls (the developmental affiliate of the Chicago Bulls in the G League), and will now take the place of former NBAer Jeremy Lin, who is looking to make a comeback in the NBA this coming season, according to SI’s Sam Amico.

Why USF Will Win

Can the USF running game get going? It rolled against The Citadel to open the season, struggled against Notre Dame, and in terms of effectiveness, it’s probably somewhere in the middle when it comes to its effectiveness.

It needs to add a bit of power to its quickness, and it has to be nearly perfect. The Bull offense might not be rocking and rolling yet, but it hasn’t turned the ball over and the team isn’t screwing up with a whole lot of penalties.

As good as Cincinnati is, it’s not the type of team that will to run away and hide with the game by hanging up 31 points in the first half – at least, it shouldn’t. USF has to hang around, hang around, hang around, and hope to capitalize on any mistakes the Bearcats might make. UC turned it over twice against Army, but …

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Cincinnati Will Win

The fantastic Bearcat front seven stuffed the Army running game. The Knights managed just 182 yards with nothing working quite right to take control of the game. It’s going to take a balanced offense with a downfield passing game to give UC problems, and that’s not UCF.

The Bulls have no problems with its short-range passing game against The Citadel – the O was too busy running – but there wasn’t much happening against Notre Dame when the game got out of hand.

As long as Cincinnati can get on the board early, there won’t be any problems.

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

What’s Going To Happen

The Bearcats won’t have any issues. The USF run defense will struggle against an offense that got stuffed a bit too much by Army – that kept the 24-10 game low. Here comes the offensive balance in an easy UC win.

Doc Rivers watching Game 1 of NBA Finals with Sixers, job offer to come

Doc Rivers is watching the 2020 NBA Finals with the Philadelphia 76ers brass and he is expected to receive an offer.

The Philadelphia 76ers have had a coaching search going since firing Brett Brown on August 24 following seven seasons on the job. The two names that were expected to be finalists for the job have been Tyronn Lue and Mike D’Antoni, but now it appears that it will come down to a new candidate.

Ever since Doc Rivers parted ways with the Los Angeles Clippers, the Sixers have expressed a lot of interest in him. They immediately reached out to him after the news came out and they brought him into town on Wednesday to interview him in person.

Now, it appears that he has not left the city and he is, in fact, watching Game 1 of the 2020 NBA Finals with the brass of the organization. According to Jason Dumas of KRON4NEWS, Rivers is even expected to get a job offer after the game is over.

Rivers has a 943-681 career coaching record with the Orlando Magic, Boston Celtics, and the Clippers. He led Boston to a championship in 2008 over the Los Angeles Lakers and he got them back in the Finals in 2010. [lawrence-related id=38016,38008,38003]
