Ohio State football projected 2021 depth chart, pre-spring defense

Spring ball will kick off in just a couple of weeks for Ohio State. Here’s the latest projection of the defensive depth chart for 2021.

We go through this exercise a few times leading up to the season and with spring ball announced as March 19 for Ohio State, it feels like a good time to see where things stand as a good baseline for what the two-deep depth chart could look like this fall.

We threw our best guess at where the offense stands on Wednesday, and now we’re following it up with what we believe the defense could look like when the Buckeyes snap the ball on September 2. OSU struggled on that side of the ball, especially in the secondary, so it’ll be key to get the right guys in the right position and scheme to make an improvement.

Off we go. Here’s our second effort at projecting the Ohio State football 2021 defensive depth chart.

Five burning offseason questions for Ohio State football

Like any college football program, Ohio State has some things that it has to address during the offseason. Here are five burning questions.

The college football season hasn’t been over very long, but we’re always looking ahead in places like Ohio State. That’s because one glorious run to the postseason usually leads into the next one when you are a Buckeye fan. With the recruiting classes, development, and coaching, anything short of a championship drive is disappointing — most notably when you consider where the program is as a current state.

With that in mind, there are always things that have to be addressed each offseason, especially in the college game where there is such significant turnover. It’s no different for OSU. With the loss of Justin Fields and other key starters, there are some question marks the coaching staff will have to answer.

Here are five burning questions that head coach Ryan Day and his staff will be dealing with during the offseason as they try to put things together for 2021.

Ohio State football very early projected defensive depth chart for 2021

It’s time to turn the page to next year. Here is a very early look at the projected Ohio State defensive depth chart for the fall of 2021.

The crazy, unpredictable college football season is over, and Ohio State finished just short of its ninth national championship in program history, losing to Alabama in the CFP national championship game.

Now, we’re looking ahead to next season because — well, that’s what we do.

College football is king on the banks of the Olentangy, so it doesn’t take long to turn the page, especially after what we witnessed in Miami. We could use a little forward look instead of dwelling on all that went wrong just a stone’s throw from South Beach.

On that note, we decided to look ahead at a projected two-deep depth chart for a run to special things next year for Ryan Day and Ohio State, We started by looking at the offensive side of the ball, and now we are on to defense. It must be remembered that there are a lot of guys that still have to make a decision on their future with the NFL, so we’re taking our best shot here on some of this. But don’t worry, we’ll update things periodically as we know more.

So with more disclaimers than a credit card terms and conditions pamphlet, here’s what we believe the defensive depth chart could look like for Ohio State in the fall of 2021.

Ohio State football releases player availability for national championship game, will be without three key starters

According to the player availability report released by Ohio State just prior to game time, the Buckeyes will be without three key starter.

After days of speculation of who was going to be available to play in tonight’s national championship game, the official report has finally been released from Ohio State. And it’s not exactly what we hoped for, but not as bad as initially assumed either.

As was rumored, both Tommy Togiai and Tyreke Smith are both listed as unavailable for tonight’s game. Both Togiai and Smith played huge roles in the Buckeyes win over Clemson in the Sugar Bowl. Their absence on the defensive line will for sure be felt.

Kicker Blake Haubeil will also not be available for this game leaving Ohio State without three starters. True Freshman, Jake Seibert will most likely handle kicking duties. Time for the next man up.

On the bright side of things, Master Teague and Harry Miller are both cleared to play on the offensive side of the ball while Tyler Friday and Zach Harrison are back on the defensive side. All four missed the Clemson game.

It’s just about game time. Let’s see what the Buckeyes are made of.

Ohio State defensive end Zach Harrison appears to be available for the CFP national championship game

Ohio State DE Zach Harrison dropped a location pin on Twitter when the team arrived in Miami. Does that mean he’s playing against Alabama?

You’ve heard the rumors, and you saw the traveling party for the Ohio State football team when it flew to New Orleans to take on Clemson in the Sugar Bowl. COVID-19 has taken its toll on the Buckeye program and we just don’t know how many players have made the trip for the College Football Playoff national championship game.

However, we do know that Ohio State was cleared to travel with more than enough players and landed in Miami this evening. And in a bit of a sly move, it may have also been revealed that at least one player that was out for the Sugar Bowl is now available to play against Alabama.

That’s because defensive end Zach Harrison dropped a pin on his Twitter account letting everyone know that he arrived somewhere. That’s not a complete confirmation, but we all know someone in isolation can’t travel with the team, and we don’t think Harrison would drop a location pin for simply checking in at the local McDonald’s.

We’ll get more confirmation of this Monday night, but in the meantime, it sure looks like at least one defensive lineman that was out of commission, is back and ready to play some American football. Or so we think.

Ohio State releases player status availability for Sugar Bowl vs. Clemson

Who’s out for the Sugar Bowl? Ohio State released its player availability for the 87th playing of the classic.

The 87th Sugar Bowl will be kicking off shortly between Ohio State and Clemson shortly. Both teams have kept injuries and who will be available for the game close to the vest. We now have official word on who will be out for the Buckeyes when they take the field.

We learned earlier from his mother’s Facebook post that starting left guard, Harry Miller, will not be with the team after testing positive for COVID. Another big name on the inactive list is running back, Master Teague. The starting OSU running back was replaced by Trey Sermon in the Big Ten Championship game after sustaining a concussion during the game. Sermon of course went on to have a monster day and broke a 25-year-old record held by Ohio State Heisman winner, Eddie George in the process.

Another big name on the list is defensive end, Zach Harrison who has rotated in at the edge. Harrison and the rest of the rushmen have had quietly had a huge impact on games. Quietly because it’s been a collective effort all season long and not just one player getting all the attention.

The Buckeyes task at hand just got a little more difficult. But as they say… Next Man Up.

Ohio State’s defensive line coach, Larry Johnson, has made a name for himself as the premier D-Line coach in the country. Behind Johnson’s tutelage, the Buckeyes are churning out NFL pass rushers at a ridiculous rate. Joey Bosa, Nick Bosa, and Chase Young have all been top three draft picks and the hits keep coming.

Enter the next edition of rush-men, Zach Harrison. He was a five-star recruit coming out of Olentangy Orange High School, just about 20 minutes north of Columbus. Harrison decided to stay close to home and learn under Johnson.

Harrison fits the mold of those high profile names that have come before him. Big, strong, athletic, and lightning-quick off the ball. After having a year to study Young, Harrison is ready to make his own mark in Scarlet and Gray.

Ohio State football is back Buckeye fans! The long wait is finally over as Ryan Day and company have their eyes set on a college football crown. But before we dream of beating the Tigers and Crimson Tides of the college football world, focus has to remain steadfast on the opponent at hand… hello Cornhuskers.

The Big Ten did Nebraska no favors when handing out new schedules for a revamped 2020 season. Was it punishment for being so vocal against conference leadership and their handling of football in a pandemic? We can speculate, but the bottom line is – we’re ready to play some football!
