Watch: Highlights for sharpshooter Jonathan Powell, 4-star Xavier commit

Xavier landed one of the top shooters in the class of 2024 on Wednesday.

Xavier landed one of the top sharpshooters in the class of 2024 on Wednesday when Centerville (Ohio) four-star shooting guard Jonathan Powell announced his commitment.

The scouting report on Powell is that he’s a stone-cold assassin from three-point range. Here are some of his high school highlights.

Powell (6-foot-6, 170 pounds) ranks No. 95 nationally in his class, No. 18 among shooting guards and No. 2 overall in the state of Ohio.

A popular recruit, Powell also had offers from Ohio State, Alabama, Cincinnati, Dayton, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Texas A&M, Virginia Tech, Wisconsin and Ohio.

Braeden Shrewsberry, Micah’s son, commits to Notre Dame

Gotta love family connections.

[autotag]Micah Shrewsberry[/autotag] barely has his feet wet as Notre Dame coach, but he might just have obtained the easiest commit he will ever get in the job. [autotag]Braeden Shrewsberry[/autotag], his son, committed to playing for his dad in South Bend. He made it official Monday:

With Shrewsberry‘s prep career having just finished, he will join the Irish immediately. That will be a welcome sign to a program simply looking for bodies to fill the roster for the upcoming season. Yes, he’s another guard, and the Irish are looking for size in the worst way, but the priority right now is filling out the roster.

247Sports ranks Shrewsberry sixth among Pennsylvania recruits in the 2023 recruiting class. In two years as a varsity player, he averaged 18.4 points, 5 rebounds and 3.7 assists a game. Before his dad left Penn State, it appeared he was heading there, but no more. He also received offers from Xavier, St. Joseph’s and George Washington.

Former Stanford forward Harrison Ingram schedules in-home visit with Texas A&M

Former Stanford Cardinal forward Harrison Ingram recently entered the transfer portal and has scheduled an in-home visit with Texas A&M

Instead of rehashing the obvious, the 2023-2024 Texas A&M Basketball team led by head coach Buzz Williams is poised to make a big run in the NCAA Tournament next season, as three starters led by All-SEC guard Wade Taylor IV, Henry Coleman, and Julius Marble are slated to return, while guard Tyrece Radford is still mulling over his decision.

However, the departure of guard Dexter Dennis, who was sadly just a one-year rental in one of his best collegiate seasons on defense does leave a hole in the rotation, as his production in combination with adding perimeter shooters remains William’s biggest needs this offseason. With the transfer portal continuing to break record numbers, the Aggies have ample opportunity to add talent, starting with former Stanford Cardinals forward Harrison Ingram, who recently entered the portal earlier this month.

Ingram, a former five-star recruit and No. 2-ranked player in Texas out of the 2021 recruiting class was a priority recruiting target for Buzz Williams after signing five-star forward Manny Obaseki. Opting to take the California route and sign with Stanford, Ingram has started the last two seasons with an identical 10.5 points per game, while shooting 40% from the field last season, and earning Pac-12 Freshman of the Year in 2022. After leaving the program on April 5, Ingram immediately set up in-home visits with North Carolina, Xavier, Baylor, and of course, Texas A&M.

Ingram’s prior relationship with Buzz Williams is surely a benefit heading into their meeting, but from the standpoint of replacing Dexter Dennis’s defensive prowess and playmaking ability, Harrison Ingram is the definition of a playmaking wing in today’s game and would become the final piece to the starting rotation for the Maroon and White next season and beyond.

This crooked rim created chaos for NCAA tournament games and may explain Iowa State’s rough start

This doesn’t seem fair.

No. 6 Iowa State and No. 11 Pittsburgh had a delayed start to their first-round game in the NCAA tournament caused by a crooked rim at Greensboro Coliseum.

The Midwest Region game followed a wild comeback from No. 4 Xavier to survive an upset bid by No. 14 Kennesaw State. During the victory, with less than a minute left on the clock, Xavier’s Souley Boum missed a wide-open layup following a pass from teammate Colby Jones.

It was one of several crucial shots that didn’t fall for Xavier, who won the game despite the missed field goals. But the troubles may have continued into the following game considering Iowa State was not able to warm up as expected.

UPDATE: The NCAA issued a statement noting that Iowa State was offered additional warmup time but declined.

Although NCAA tournament officials made sure that the rim was level before the game finally tipped off, Pittsburgh was able to warm up before the game.

The Cyclones, however, were not. When the game finally started, Iowa State missed each of their first twelve attempts from the field and did not make any of their field goals until over ten games of game time had passed.

All five of the starters for Pittsburgh made field goals before a single player on Iowa State was able to connect. After trailing 21-2, the Cyclones went on a 17-4 run to cut the deficit to 26-19.

While we don’t know if this was the reason why the Cyclones had such a slow start, the two teams will switch rims at the end of the first half.

If the Panthers also struggle to connect from the field, it’s time that we all start to raise some eyebrows about whether or not the crooked rim was ever legitimately fixed.

Either way, however, it seems a bit unfair that Pittsburgh was able to warm up before the game but Iowa State was not given the same opportunity before tipoff.

Notre Dame announces nonconference schedule for 2022-23 season

Notre Dame is eager to build on the success it had during the 2021-22 season.

Notre Dame is eager to build on the success it had during the 2021-22 season. It won two NCAA Tournament games, and [autotag]Blake Wesley[/autotag] became the program’s first one-and-done player after being drafted by the San Antonio Spurs. For the 2022-23 season, the Irish are returning most of their players and have another freshman with high expectations in [autotag]JJ Starling[/autotag]. We now know how their season will start in that they have released their nonconference schedule.

After everything the Irish accomplished last year, opponents will know not to take them lightly. [autotag]Mike Brey[/autotag] has recaptured his old magic, and that means a team that should continue to get better. All of this means some quality basketball will be played, and that means a product worth the money paid by the fans who come out to see them. After a Nov. 2 exhibition against New Orleans-based NAIA opponent Xavier, here’s who the Irish will face before playing an ACC schedule that promises even more excitement:

Tony Vitello updates status of Chase Dollander

Tony Vitello updates the status of pitcher Chase Dollander.

No. 1 Tennessee (38-3, 17-1 SEC) defeated Xavier (21-21, 5-4 Big East), 10-1, Tuesday at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

The Vols will host Auburn at Lindsey Nelson Stadium Friday-Sunday.

Chase Dollander has served as Tennessee’s Saturday starting pitcher during the 2022 season. Dollander left the Vols’ game against Alabama on April 16 after being hit by a line drive.

Dollander did not pitch in Tennessee’s series sweep at Florida last weekend. He suffered a bruise on his right arm from the line drive against Alabama.

Following Tennessee’s win against Xavier, Vols’ head coach Tony Vitello discussed Dollander’s status for the Auburn series.

Vitello mentioned Dollander is good and doing much better than a few days ago.

“The biggest thing is, he’s got a huge smile on his face, so I think he kind of sees that it’s coming along,” Vitello said of Dollander.

The fifth-year head coach said Dollander is anxious in returning to the mound.

“We want to use him this weekend,” Vitello said. “I don’t know if that’s possible, but he’s definitely doing a lot more as of the last couple days.”
