Instant 2024 NFL Draft grades: Kansas City Chiefs select Xavier Worthy, WR, Texas

The Kansas City Chiefs caught an itch for their offense for a speedster to be its primary weapon and traded up with the Buffalo Bills to ensure they landed the fastest player in NFL combine history with Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy.

Worthy projects as a rotational piece in a receiver room full of question marks. If Worthy is able to tap into his full potential under Andy Reid, he could be the number one receiver by year’s end and a potential rookie of the year candidate.

Speed is Worthy’s obvious strong suit, and he has loads of it. Shifty after the catch with excellent acceleration, Worthy is someone teams will have to pay attention to on every snap. The leaner Worthy could be swallowed up by NFL defensive backs, and he needs to refine some more technical issues, but this has home run potential for the Chiefs.

Chiefs WR Xavier Worthy: ‘Everybody dreams of playing with Patrick Mahomes’

Check out what #Chiefs WR Xavier Worthy had to say about playing with Patrick Mahomes during his introductory press conefrence.

Hundreds of prospects are still waiting to hear their name called at the 2024 NFL draft, and after a whirlwind first round, most are unaware of which team they will join.

The Kansas City Chiefs selected speedy wide receiver Xavier Worthy in the first round, and the union was a dream come true for the new rookie.

Worthy spoke with local media for the first time as a member of the Chiefs late on Thursday night. The Zoom press conference revealed Worthy’s excitement about playing with Patrick Mahomes and being selected by Kansas City.

“Everybody dreams of playing with Patrick Mahomes, [he is] one of the greatest QBs of all time,” Worthy started. “To be able to play for him, everybody talks about it, but I’ve been saying for a while that I’m going to be a Chief. So I just put it in the air, and now that I’m here, it’s amazing.”

Worthy was a consistent threat at Texas when he was healthy and should fit in well with Mahomes, who has spoken highly of him at different points this offseason.

Brett Veach: Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes learned about Xavier Worthy pick while at Time Magazine gala

Brett Veach told reporters that he informed Patrick Mahomes about the #Chiefs’ selection of Xavier Worthy while he was at the Time100 Gala.

The NFL Draft war rooms for every team in the league are constantly busy with different scenarios being assessed throughout the night. The Kansas City Chiefs’ room, led by general manager Brett Veach, always evaluates talent and takes suggestions from his franchise quarterback.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes attended the annual Time Magazine Time100 Gala in New York City to celebrate his inclusion on the cover. The iconic event didn’t take the three-time Super Bowl champion’s attention away from his team and the in-progress draft.

“I think he was at a gala night in New York,” Veach explained. “He called me and said, ‘Hey, good luck. I’ll be in New York, but I got my phone on.’ I think [he] was pretty quiet most of the night, think right around pick 20 [or] 21. He said, Hey, how’s it looking? You know, what are we thinking?

“I guess, 30 to 45 minutes later, I think, when we actually confirmed the trade with the league before we turned it in, I shot him a text and said ‘I think we’re gonna be on the clock here soon’ and told him the pick. So he [sent] a thumbs-up emoji and was excited.”

Worthy has been in contact with Mahomes well before this weekend’s draft, as he revealed after the Combine that the reigning Super Bowl MVP congratulated him on his record-breaking 40-yard dash time. Veach assumed Mahomes spoke with Worthy while in New York City.

“I’m sure they already touched base and talked already,” Veach said. “He was a guy that, obviously, being from Texas, Pat knew all about. He knows a lot about a lot of players, but he was certainly excited.”

The Chiefs are adding more firepower to their offense, and once again, another player from Texas captured Mahomes’s attention well before he’s put on a Kansas City jersey.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid reveals early plans for Texas WR Xavier Worthy

#Chiefs head coach Andy Reid revealed his plans for Texas WR Xavier Worthy, who was Kansas City’s first-round pick in the 2024 NFL draft.

The Kansas City Chiefs made moves late in the first round of the NFL draft, trading up with their AFC nemesis, the Buffalo Bills to move from pick No. 32 to No. 28.

Ultimately, Kansas City selected Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy,  indicating their high hopes for the talented speedster.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid spoke with the media immediately following Worthy’s selection, sharing his thoughts on the former Longhorn. Reid already has a plan for utilizing his record-breaking speed in the game plan and special teams.

“I think he is a heck of a football player,” Reid explained. “Number one, he does a few different things. He’s a good wide receiver and also a good special teams returner. He’ll end up doing both to start things off with.

“We’ll just work him into that rotation when we get him (into) the wide receiver rotation, and with Hollywood (Marquise Brown) and Rashee (Rice) and (Travis) Kelce, you know, the other folks, so it should give Pat (Patrick Mahomes) another weapon to use.”

The announcement that the Chiefs and Bills were making a deal shocked many critics, but Reid shed some light on Kansas City’s mindset.

“We wanted him, and we just felt that he started getting down there; somebody might jump us and pick him up,” said Reid. “Brett does a great job of this; he got a real good feel for the people that have interest in that position and that player and then where he needs to go to attack it.”

Reid has thrived with slim and speedy receivers, as he mentioned his experience with former receiver DeSean Jackson during his time with the Philadelphia Eagles. The longtime head coach was enticed to select Worthy because of his desire and eagerness to play football.

“I like his makeup,” Reid continued. “I like the fact that he can go all day and that he loves football. And you guys know how we’re wired here. Brett (Veach) makes that a real characteristic that he likes. Likewise, as coaches, we love that. If you find that out about a guy and you can tell he’s passionate about the sport, I think you’ll see this when you meet him. And he loves to play. And he’s good at it.”

Hopes are high for what Worthy can bring to the Chief’s offense, as the possibilities are endless as day one of the NFL draft comes to a close.

2024 NFL draft: Compensation revealed for Chiefs’ trade with Bills

Take a look at what the #Chiefs had to give the #Bills to trade up for Texas WR Xavier Worthy in the first round of the 2024 NFL draft.

The Kansas City Chiefs had to move up in the first round of the 2024 NFL draft to select Texas standout Xavier Worthy on Thursday night.

The defending Super Bowl champions made a deal with the Buffalo Bills to trade their No. 32 selection for the No. 28 pick, where they took Worthy, who set the NFL combine’s 40-yard dash record back in March.

In addition to the No. 32 choice in the draft, Kansas City sent and received two additional selections, meaning that the Chiefs will still have six picks remaining in the draft.

Details about compensation were first reported by Field Yates on Twitter:

While this move was hardly a blockbuster in terms of compensation, it resulted in a blockbuster pick when Kansas City took the fastest player in the 2024 class.

Expect this trade to be the subject of many discussions next season if the Chiefs meet the Bills in the AFC playoffs in January.

Chiefs select Texas WR Xavier Worthy at pick No. 28 in 2024 NFL draft

With pick No. 28 in the 2024 NFL draft, the Kansas City #Chiefs selected Texas WR Xavier Worthy.

Following a trade with the Buffalo Bills, the Kansas City Chiefs selected University of Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy with the 28th pick in the 2024 NFL draft.

The Chiefs have made it no secret that they were in search of another top-tier receiver in the offense. The desire to add more speed appears to be a success with adding the former Longhorns standout. Worthy set the 40-yard dash record of 4.21 at the 2024 NFL Combine, breaking the previous record of 4.22 set by John Ross in 2017.

Worthy also set records during his time at Texas, including the school’s highest-ever marks for receiving yards and touchdown catches in a season, with 981 yards and 12 respectively.

His elite speed should prove to be an asset for Andy Reid next season, and Patrick Mahomes could help make Worthy a star in the NFL as a rookie.

Kansas City Chiefs select Texas WR Xavier Worthy with the 28th overall pick. Grade: A+

Xavier Worthy gives Patrick Mahomes the most dynamic speed receiver he’s had since Tyreek Hill.

The Chiefs have won two Super Bowls since they traded Tyreek Hill to the Dolphins, but they’ve had to do it with more singles than home runs in a downfield sense, and they’ve had to do it with receivers who were… well, let’s be kind and just say “inconsistent.” When the Chiefs traded up with the Bills to make their pick, everybody knew what was coming. Worthy’s track speed absolutely transfers to the field, and while he has his own consistency issues (get him a JUGS machine, stat), he immediately gives Patrick Mahomes that dynamite vertical target he’s been lacking. And Worthy’s size is less of an issue in an offense where shifts and motions will give him so much open space.

A four-star recruit out of Central East High School in Fresno, California, Xavier Worthy originally committed to Michigan, but academic issues delayed that process, and after considering Alabama, Worthy then chose to roll with Texas and head coach Steve Sarkisian because he liked the ways in which Sarkisian utilized DeVonta Smith, another smaller speed receiver, as Alabama’s offensive coordinator.

Speed is the important word here. Speed kills, and absolute speed kills absolutely. Worthy has absolute speed.

It was easy enough to diagnose that from watching his game tape, but when Worthy went to the 2024 scouting combine and set the record with a 4.21-second 40-yard dash, that was the clincher. And it was not the only instance in which Worthy put up preposterous numbers.

Now, the height/weight profile could be a problem. There are other smaller speed receivers who have succeeded in the NFL, but the guys who have done it in the modern era generally check in a bit heavier — more on the 180-pound scale.

So, will Worthy’s NFL team stick with his weight as is, or try to beef him up a bit without losing any of that explosive potential? We can but wait and see.

PLUSES

— Record-breaking speed shows up on the field; Worthy can house a handoff or a quick screen, and he’s very adept at gaining separation in a straight line downfield.

— Has a nice sense of foot feints to get off press at the line of scrimmage and will then head into Acceleration Mode.

— Turns into his routes with little need to slow down and re-accelerate.

— Wins with late hands to the ball as it’s coming in.

— His ability to get open and up to top speed out of motion could make him a terrifying target in the right NFL offense.

— Not just a go/post/seam guy, Worthy will stick his foot in the ground to re-direct, and he’s got a pretty diverse route profile.

MINUSES

— For all his explosive potential, Worthy had just six catches of 20 or more air yards last season on 23 targets for 234 yards and two touchdowns.

— Focus drops are a legitimate issue; Worthy doesn’t have much of a catch radius, and he isn’t excited about heading into traffic.

— Blocking is more performative than effective.

— Creates YAC with speed as opposed to any sort of physicality; he’s not a contested catch player in the traditional sense, and his after-contact potential is iffy.

Worthy is more of a nuanced receiver than the speed numbers would have you believe. On the other hand, he isn’t as explosively effective as you’d like for a guy with his rare traits. A lot of that can be worked through with NFL coaching, but 5′ 11¼” and 165 pounds is what it is. Worthy’s NFL team had best have a clear plan for his schematic success.

Chiefs trade up with Bills for No. 28 selection in 2024 NFL draft

The #Chiefs traded up with the #Bills to select Texas Longhorns standout WR Xavier Worthy with the No. 28 pick in the 2024 NFL draft.

The Kansas City Chiefs traded with the Buffalo Bills to move up to the No. 28 selection in the 2024 NFL draft.

The move comes amid a particularly perplexing first round that saw a plethora of offensive talent come off the board in the top 15.

With this trade, Kansas City secured the talents of Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy, setting the stage for an offensive rebirth for the Chiefs as they look to defend their Super Bowl LVIII title next season.

Patrick Mahomes needed more help in the passing game, and Brett Veach came through for him in a big way by moving up for Worthy.

One of the most explosive players in the 2024 draft class, Worthy was a dynamic target as a Longhorn, helping spearhead an offensive attack that was a contender in the College Football Playoffs earlier this year.

He set the record for the fastest 40-yard dash in NFL combine history earlier this year.

Chiefs fans are sure to be thrilled with this exceptional selection.

2024 NFL draft rumors: Dolphins could trade up for WR Xavier Worthy

According to one report, there’s a robust market for Xavier Worthy who is unlikely to escape the top 20 picks.

Last week, Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer wrote that other NFL teams have Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy “circled” for the Miami Dolphins. With the first round of the 2024 NFL draft just hours away, another report stoked those flames.

According to SportsKeeda’s Tony Pauline, there’s a robust market for Worthy that could even see the Dolphins moving up in the draft order to secure the speed demon.

I mentioned the affection the Indianapolis Colts have for receiver Xavier Worthy earlier today after mocking to the team at the 15th pick yesterday. Word out of Detroit last night is the Colts may trade up for Worthy to ensure he’s on their roster as the franchise may have competition for the speedy wideout.

I’m told the Buffalo Bills will broach moving up for Worthy and he would also be a player the Arizona Cardinals target if they move down from the fourth spot. There is even some belief Worthy is a player the Miami Dolphins would consider moving up for. At this point, it would be a surprise if Worthy gets out of the teens.

If that report is accurate, it doesn’t sound like the Dolphins will even have the option to take Worthy if they sit back at No. 21 overall. Miami doesn’t have much ammunition to move up, though. The Dolphins own the No. 55 overall selection in the second round, but are without third- and fourth-round picks.

It’s not hard to understand why Miami is getting tied to Worthy, though. Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel hasn’t hid his affinity for speedy players and Worthy is the fastest in NFL Scouting Combine history.

Worthy doesn’t seem opposed to the idea either.

The Dolphins have a star duo of receivers in place already with Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. But Hill, who is now 30, may be nearing the end of his time in Miami with salary cap of $31.3 million, $34.2 million, and $56.3 million in the 2024, 2025, and 2026 seasons, respectively.

A third wide receiver could make an immediate impact too as the Dolphins struggled to find another option for Tua Tagovailoa in 2023. Tight end Durham Smythe was the team’s third leading receiver with only 366 yards.
