Former Bulldog linebacker named as player running out of opportunities

Bleacher Report ranked a linebacker that transferred from Georgia among former elite recruits running out of chances

In the look ahead to the 2024 college football season, Bleacher Report compiled a list of players who were formerly top recruits but are running out of chances. Among the players listed was former Bulldog linebacker Xavian Sorey Jr.

A five-star recruit in the class of 2021, Sorey earned snaps in the rotation at linebacker last year for the Dawgs but was unable to win a starting job. He compiled 19 tackles and one sack in the 2023 season, including five total tackles against Alabama in the SEC championship game.

“If there’s one position group nationally where a super-athletic player could get lost in the shuffle, the Georgia Bulldogs linebacker room would be at the top of the heap,” said Bleacher Report’s Brad Shepard.

Sorey has found his second chance in Fayetteville, transferring to Arkansas, and he should start right away at the inside linebacker position. He named defensive coordinator Travis Williams, who recruited him in high school, as a key reason for his transfer. He joins former Georgia cornerback Jaheim Singletary as the second former Bulldog recruit to join the Razorbacks in as many years.

The former five-star prospect was rated the No. 4 linebacker and the No. 35 player overall in the 2021 class, per 247Sports. Sorey will have two years of eligibility remaining.

Playing time was hard to come by for the IMG Academy (Bradenton, Florida) product, who was jumped on the depth chart this season by highly-touted freshmen C.J. Allen and Raylen Wilson.

Allen and Wilson will be back, along with junior starter Smael Mondon Jr. at inside linebacker. The Bulldogs also hold a commitment from five-star Justin Williams, who is the No. 1 linebacker in the 2024 class.

Former 5-star recruit, Georgia LB enters transfer portal

Georgia football linebacker, former five-star recruit is the 11th Dawg to enter the transfer portal

Georgia Bulldogs linebacker Xavian Sorey has enter the NCAA transfer portal. Sorey, who was a five-star recruit in the class of 2021, is a sophomore.

The 6-foot-3, 220-pound linebacker recorded 19 tackles and a sack for Georgia in 2023. Sorey played in the SEC championship game, but he missed a chance to start after Jamon Dumas-Johnson went down with a forearm injury.

Instead, Kirby Smart and Georgia started freshmen linebackers Raylen Wilson and CJ Allen over the Dawgs’ last few games of the season. Sorey is talented enough to start for a great many teams in the SEC, so he should generate a lot of interest.

Former 5-star LB Xavian Sorey progressing in third season at Georgia

Could we see some more of former five-star recruit Xavian Sorey this year?

Xavian Sorey came to Georgia as a five-star linebacker out of IMG Academy in the class of 2021.

Sorey played his first three seasons of high school football in the small town of Graceville, Florida. He transferred to IMG Academy for his senior season before enrolling at Georgia in January of 2021.

During his first two seasons at Georgia, Sorey’s recorded five tackles and an interception. But he’s been on a depth chart that included a number of NFL draft picks at the linebacker position. Plus there’s Smael Mondon and Jamon Dumas-Johnson, so the opportunity has not truly presented itself for Sorey.

Now, Kirby Smart said Sorey has been playing some with the first team and discussed the linebacker’s progress entering Sorey’s redshirt sophomore season.

“He’s shown some exceptional acceleration in flashes. Consistency is the biggest thing with him,” Smart said.

“There might be a mental lapse every now and then, and he’ll be the first to admit it that when he gets it right he can be really good. He has tools that some guys on our team don’t have. We’ve tried to utilize those and we’ll continue to, but he’s developing and he’s rolling in with those guys and playing well.”

Smart discussed Sorey’s inexperience at the inside linebacker position, noting he never played it until coming to UGA.

“Everyone else that you recruit at that position, they played that position in high school. Smael (Mondon) played, Pop (Jamon Dumas-Johnson) played.” Smart said. “This kid played at a really small school until he went to IMG, and then at IMG he had a foot injury and lined up at the end of the line and he had never stepped back and keyed. I got enough football awareness and football experience that kids that do that, it takes them a little while.”

Smart compared Sorey’s development to former Georgia linebacker Channing Tindall.

“Channing [Tindall] went through that a little bit where you don’t play at the second level a lot and you’ve got to key and diagnose.”

His career worked out pretty well for Tindall. In his final season at Georgia, Tindall recorded 67 tackles and 5.5 sacks en route to helping Georgia win a national title. He was a third-round pick by the Dolphins.
