Broncos host 3 free agents, including an ex-Saints wide receiver

The Broncos hosted LBs Bumper Pool and Tanner Vallejo and ex-Saints WR Tre’Quan Smith this week.

The Denver Broncos seem to be seeking more depth at linebacker and wide receiver.

The Broncos brought in two free agent linebackers — Bumper Pool and Tanner Vallejo — for workouts on Wednesday, according to the NFL’s transaction wire.

Denver is also bringing in wide receiver Tre’Quan Smith for a visit, according to multiple reports (via Saints Wire).

Pool (6-2, 232 pounds) signed with the Carolina Panthers as an undrafted free agent out of Arkansas earlier this year. He totaled 441 tackles in five years (51 games) with the Razorbacks.

Vallejo (6-1, 230 pounds) has spent time with five NFL teams since entering the league as a sixth-round pick out of Boise State with the Buffalo Bills in 2017. He played under Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph last season, recording 37 tackles in 17 games (five starts).

Denver is likely looking for more depth at LB after losing Josey Jewell to a groin injury against the Miami Dolphins last week.

Smith (6-2, 210 pounds) was picked by the New Orleans Saints in the third round of the 2018 NFL draft out of UCF. He played under Broncos coach Sean Payton from 2018-2021. Smith has totaled 131 receptions for 1,764 yards and 18 touchdowns in 66 career games (35 starts).

Denver already has four former Saints on the 53-man roster. We’ll see if Smith joins them this week.

WATCH: Bills’ coach Sean McDermott shows GMFB his kettlebell workout

WATCH: #Bills’ coach Sean McDermott shows GMFB his kettlebell workout:

Buffalo Bills’ head coach Sean McDermott is definitely one of the more in-shape coaches on the sidelines in the NFL.

NFL Network’s Good Morning Football host Kyle Brandt has noticed and spoken about it in the past. Recently, Brandt asked McDermott about the famous driveway workouts and the Bills’ coach gave some live reps mid-interview.

Check out how that went down in the clip below:

McDermott definitely has heard that sitting is the new smoking.

Brandt referred to the offseason ranking of fittest coaches in the leagues, pointing out AFC East rival New York Jets’ head coach Robert Saleh was ranked No. 1 and asked the Bills coach if he wanted to test that ranking in between McDermott’s sets. The Bills coach continued with his reps on the other arm.

We look forward to analyzing who looks better between the two coaches on Monday Night Football, when the Buffalo Bills visit the New York Jets in Week 1 of the NFL season.

Report: Saints to host former Chiefs, LSU running back Darrel Williams

Report: Saints to host former Chiefs and LSU running back Darrel Williams for a workout on Monday

There have been no shortage of former LSU Tigers on the New Orleans Saints’ roster under head coach Dennis Allen — and another one could be on the way. TheScore’s Jordan Schultz reports that Darrel Williams will be working out for the team on Monday.

A former standout at LSU and, before that, John Ehret High School in Marrero on the West Bank in New Orleans, Williams has been a solid role player with the Kansas City Chiefs and Arizona Cardinals. He turned 28 this year and could be a good fit in the Saints backfield.

Running back is certainly a position of need for New Orleans. The Saints have already lost one backup (Eno Benjamin) to a season-ending injury and another (Kirk Merritt) wasn’t available for their first preseason game due to a different injury. Promising rookie third-round pick Kendre Miller left the contest with a knee injury, too. Adding a veteran like Williams could be a smart investment. We’ll see if anything comes of this after the Saints failed to cut a deal with Kareem Hunt last week.

Report: Saints work out former Giants, Cowboys LB Jaylon Smith

Report: Seeking improved defensive depth, the Saints work out former Giants and Cowboys linebacker Jaylon Smith

This could be an interesting move: TheScore’s Jordan Schultz reports that the New Orleans Saints brought in linebacker Jaylon Smith for a workout in the wake of Anthony Barr’s visit on Monday.

Smith, 28, has spent most of the last two years with the New York Giants after starting his career with the Dallas Cowboys back in 2016. He’s started 69 of the 87 games he’s played in the NFL, as well as four playoff games. He also had a two-game cameo with the Green Bay Packers in 2021.

Smith’s career was derailed by a catastrophic knee injury in his final college game at Notre Dame, costing him his entire rookie season and dropping him out of first-round consideration; it turned out to be one of a few incidents that ignited a wave of withdrawals by top NFL draft prospects in bowl season that continues to this day.

To his credit, Smith has gone on to put a nice career together for himself, and he’d be a good fit in New Orleans behind Demario Davis and Pete Werner. Head coach Dennis Allen recently acknowledged that he hasn’t seen anyone emerge out of the group of first- and second-year pros and journeymen special teamers to win that opportunity.

Broncos worked out two players on Wednesday

The Broncos worked out wide receivers Ra’Shaun Henry and J.J. Koski on Wednesday.

The Denver Broncos brought in a pair of wide receivers for workouts on Wednesday, according to the NFL’s transaction wire.

The Broncos hosted Ra’Shaun Henry and J.J. Koski this week ahead of Friday’s preseason opener against the Arizona Cardinals.

Henry (6-3, 190 pounds) began his college career at Saint Francis University before later transferring to the University of Virginia. After totaling 41 receptions for 809 yards and seven touchdowns in two seasons (21 games) with the Cavaliers, Henry went undrafted in 2022.

Henry initially signed with the Carolina Panthers as a college free agent and he has since spent time with the Atlanta Falcons and Cleveland Browns. He remains a free agent after Wednesday’s workout in Denver.

Koski (6-1, 195 pounds) played college football at Cal Poly and entered the NFL as a college free agent with the Los Angeles Rams in 2020. He spent the last three years in L.A., mostly on the practice squad or injured reserve.

Koski appeared in five games during the 2021 season and returned two punts and five kickoffs. In the regular season, he has played exclusively on special teams (47 snaps) in his NFL career so far. At the time of publication, Koski remains a free agent.

Kareem Hunt didn’t even work out for the Saints before leaving town

Kareem Hunt didn’t even work out for the Saints before leaving town, chasing a better offer in Indianapolis | @DillySanders

It’s been a hectic couple of days in New Orleans Saints news with some confusion around the potential additions of running back Kareem Hunt and linebacker Anthony Barr.

After a report came out from ESPN’s Dianna Russini that the Saints expected to sign both players, not that they had signed, aggregate sites and other companies had ran with the news as if it was official. It then came out that the players hadn’t signed and instead were leaving the facility without a deal in place.

Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football added even more clarity to the situation, sharing that Kareem Hunt never even worked out for the team and was just listed as a visitor, citing the official daily NFL transactions wire. Barr, however, did complete a workout for the team before leaving town.

Russini further clarified that the Indianapolis Colts had actually swooped in and gave Hunt a call with a higher offer than the Saints before he arrived at the team facility. Hunt was then advised, presumably by his agent, to leave New Orleans and go to Indianapolis to meet with the Colts.

Barr working out with the team is at least a big positive from this latest wave of updates, as the former Minnesota Vikings and Dallas Cowboys linebacker is the higher-priority free agent. Maybe he’ll end up with New Orleans after all.

It’s rare to find a hotel with a complete gym full of all types of equipment.

Minimal equipment makes it difficult to get creative with your workouts and stay on track with your training program.

This week, Golfweek’s fitness guru and long driver Averee Dovsek demonstrates a full-body workout you can do in a hotel gym with a single dumbbell.

Broncos worked out 4 players this week

The Broncos worked out four players on Thursday and signed Austin Ajiake after placing Jonas Griffith on injured reserve.

After losing inside linebacker Jonas Griffith to a season-ending torn ACL, the Denver Broncos worked out four players on Thursday.

The Broncos worked out Austin Ajiake, Chris Garrett, Breeland Speaks and “Olasunkanmi,” according to Aaron Wilson and Mike Klis. “Olasunkanmi” is presumably how Ola Adeniyi’s name showed up on the NFL’s transaction wire.

Denver ended up signing Ajiake. The Broncos had an open spot for Ajiake on the 90-man offseason roster after officially placing Griffith on injured reserve on Thursday.

“We liked him,” Broncos coach Sean Payton said of Ajiake. “We felt like he had good athletic traits. We felt like he could help us in the kicking game. We brought him back for a workout with the other guys, and we thought he did pretty well.”

Meanwhile, wide receiver Tim Patrick (Achilles) underwent successful surgery on Thursday. Patrick is now facing a six-month recovery timeline. If all goes well, the veteran will be able to return before training camp in 2024.

WATCH: Justyn Ross working on route running at Chiefs training camp

This route was worth the price of admission for fans in attendance at #Chiefs training camp on Thursday.

Justyn Ross is the preeminent standout of the Kansas City Chiefs’ 2023 training camp and has become something of an obsession for the team’s fanbase. His highlight reel from camp is well documented, but on Thursday he got back to the basics, showing off some crafty route running that is sure to turn heads ahead of Kansas City’s first preseason game next week.

Ross’ work in practice was featured in a short clip that was posted to the Chiefs’ official Twitter page after practice.

While a win in one-on-one workouts is hardly indicative of his potential in the long term, Ross’ ability to create separation with his feet is undeniable. Between the improved technique and his budding chemistry with Kansas City’s quarterbacks, Ross is among the players that fans should watch closest during the Chiefs’ preseason exhibitions later in August.

If he can put it all together through the end of the month, Ross may be the team’s top breakout player during the 2023 regular season.

Packers host workout for USFL QB Josh Love

The Packers are working out quarterback Josh Love, who was the starter for Michigan Panthers of the USFL in 2023.

The Green Bay Packers hosted a workout for quarterback Josh Love of the USFL’s Michigan Panthers, according to Aaron Wilson.

Unsettled at quarterback behind Jordan Love, the Packers continue doing work on potential upgrades at the position.

Love, 26, went undrafted out of San Jose State in 2020. He spent time with the Los Angeles Rams and Carolina Panthers before joining the USFL, where he played in three games for the Pittsburgh Maulers and 13 games for the Michigan Panthers between 2022 and 2023.

This past season, Love completed 143 of 236 passes for 1,556 yards, 13 touchdowns and 10 interceptions over nine games in the USFL. He threw 17 touchdown passes and 14 interceptions over two seasons in the developmental league.

His final season at San Jose State saw Love completed 60.9 percent of his passes and throw 22 touchdown passes against eight interceptions.

The Packers currently have fifth-round pick Sean Clifford, 2018 draft pick Danny Etling and 2023 USFL MVP Alex McGough competing to be Jordan Love’s backup. The team recently worked out former Colts quarterback Jacob Eason.

Could another J. Love join the Packers depth chart?

Per Rob Demovsky of ESPN, the Packers also worked out receiver Darion Chafin and guard Parker Ferguson.
