Troy vs WKU Game Preview

Why Troy Will Win

The Troy passing game is dominating.

It leads all Sun Belt teams and is tenth in the nation averaging 343 yards per game, rolling for 321 yards in the strong win over Marshall, the running game worked a little bit, and now it gets to go against a WKU defense that struggled in the one game it played against a team that can throw – the 33-30 loss to Indiana.

The Hilltoppers have an offense, but it’s not great at coming up with third down conversions, it doesn’t control the clock, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why WKU Will Win

The team is great at keeping the mistakes to a minimum.

Penalties aren’t an issue and the six turnovers were spread out over the four games.

The passing attack rocked FIU for 480 yards, but this year’s version of the attack is more balanced – the running game is avenging over five yards per pop.

For all the strong things the Troy offense is doing, it’s not great at keeping things moving, there’s no rushing attack, and the defense has a hard time getting off the field.

However …

What’s Going To Happen

WKU beat Austin Peay, Hawaii, and FIU – it’s not like it dealt with a slew of killers.

Troy wasn’t bad against Ole Miss, it had Appalachian State beat before the Hail Mary, and it got past Marshall. It’s more battle tested.

This will be a fun back-and-forth fight, but WKU will get that one extra takeaway to finally take a little bit of control.

FIU vs WKU Game Preview

Why FIU Will Win

Can the Panthers start to get the offense moving consistently?

They’ve only played two games and had two weeks off since sputtering a 41-12 loss to Texas State. The running game isn’t going to do much, but can the passing attack push the Hilltopper secondary?

WKU couldn’t stop Indiana from coming through late in the wild 33-30 Hoosier win, and Hawaii – who isn’t throwing on anyone – threw for 266 yards. FIU has to be better on both sides of the ball on third downs, but push for 310 yards like it came up with against Bryant, and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why WKU Will Win

WKU isn’t Bryant.

No, the passing game isn’t working like last year’s version, but it’s averaging almost 300 yards every time out, FIU doesn’t have any running game to fall back on if the air attack isn’t working, and there’s no Panther downfield passing attack.

The Hilltoppers defense came up with six takeaways against Hawaii – five of them picks – and 11 on the year. They should be able to get to the FIU quarterbacks early on, and …

10 Best Predictions Against the Spread

What’s Going To Happen

The Hilltopper line should neutralize the FIU pass rush.

WKU QB Austin Reed will throw at least one pick, but he’ll also hit 70% of his passes as the team gets over the heartbreak in Bloomington with an easy win that should be over by halftime.

The Panthers won’t have enough offense to keep up, and the defense will have a hard time getting off the field.

WKU vs Hawaii Game Preview

Why WKU Will Win

Vanderbilt isn’t that good.

It’s better, but it won 63-10 against Hawaii because the other side is in a total rebuild mode.

Timmy Chang is trying to bring the glory back to the program, but it was hit so hard by all of the problems at the end of last season that it’s going to take a recurring cycle or three – and a lot from the transfer portal – to get the pieces in place.

WKU isn’t going to run much – Vanderbilt went for over 400 yards on the ground – but the passing attack go the tune-up out of the way with a 38-27 win over Austin Peay helped by a good day from new starting quarterback Austin Reed.

This isn’t going to be the WKU passing game of last year, but it’s still going to wing it around. As long as the Hilltoppers can give Reed time – Hawaii didn’t generate a lick of pressure in the Commodore backfield – the yards will come.

Week 1 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Hawaii Will Win

It’s not like WKU looked all that great in Week 0, either.

It wasn’t a 53-point loss, but it took a big fourth quarter to put away Austin Peay.

No, the Hilltopper offense isn’t anywhere near the level it was last year – QB Bailey Zappe is off to New England and offensive coordinator Zach Kittley is at Texas Tech – and it took four takeaways to get the job done.

For all the problems Hawaii had, the effort was there – Vandy was just far more physical – and the running game wasn’t all that bad before the game got out of hand.

The passing game should have a much, much easier time this week. This should be more like the Hawaii offense everyone is hoping for.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Saturday

What’s Going To Happen

Who’s Week 0 was real and which team can improve?

Neither team was good last week – but in different ways – and if everything works this week there should be a firefight between the passing games.

At least, in theory that’s how it’s supposed to work.

Both offenses should be a little bit sharper, the passing attacks should be a little better, and Hawaii should be able to rise up and play a whole lot better at home after the debacle on Saturday night.

It’ll be a back-and-forth battle with WKU hanging on late.

WKU Hilltoppers Preview 2022

You’ll have to forgive WKU for being a wee bit miffed.

UTSA won the Conference USA championship. It’s got a big school in the San Antonio market, and it’s going to the American Athletic Conference next year.

So is Charlotte, and it seemingly just entered Conference USA five minutes ago. So is Rice, and it has an enrollment of around 19 students. Florida Atlantic, North Texas, and UAB also got the call.

All WKU has done is go to seven bowl games in the last eight years, play in three Conference USA championship games during that span, and it brings an enrollment of well over 20,000 students along with one of the funkiest mascots in all of sports.

And it might just have the offense that’s good enough to send all those other schools out with their tails between their legs.

This might not be the No. 2 attack in the nation like it was last year, but the system is still in place, holes were filled, and this should once again be a very, very fun team that should make a lot of noise.

And now you made it mad.

WKU Hilltoppers Preview 2022: Offense

Well that worked. For years WKU struggled to put points on the board – it only came up with more than 24 points twice in 2020 and got more than 38 three times from 2017 through 2020. Last year the offense averaged 44 points and 535 yards per game – second in the nation in both categories.

It all worked because the program brought in the key parts of the great Houston Baptist attack, but offensive coordinator Zach Kittley is now working his magic at Texas Tech, and star quarterback Bailey Zappe is looking to stay employed as a New England Patriot.

The offense will try to keep everything going with Josh Crawford and Ben Arbuckle going from key assistants to co-offensive coordinators, and …

Jarret Doege came in to try to bomb for for a bazillion yards. The former West Virginia starter brought a ton of experience and great career stats, but he shockingly entered the transfer portal late in fall camp. In comes Austin Reed, a big-time bomber for D-II national champion West Florida. He knows how to push the ball deep.

The loss of Zappe is big, but the passing game also lost the 150 catches, 1,902 yards, and 17 touchdowns from Jerreth Sterns – another Houston Baptist transfer who’s now with Tampa Bay. 87-catch, 14-touchdown playmaker Mitchell Tinsley is also gone, leaving for Penn State.

Michael Mathison made 56 catches at Akron last year and now should do a whole lot more, Daewood Davis averaged close to 18 yards per catch and eighth scores, and Malachi Corley is the leading returning receiver with 73 catches for 691 yards and seven scores.

Dalvin Smith is also back after making five touchdown catches as a freshman, and tight ends Joey Bejan and Joshua Simon will play big roles.

The running game was the least productive in Conference USA, but that’s because the passing attack was so amazing. The Hilltoppers, though, were okay when they did try to run, averaging over four yards per carry.

Leading rusher Noah Whittingham is in the transfer portal, so it’ll be up to the combination of Kye Robichaux and Jakairi Moses to try carrying the load when they get their chances.

The offensive line will be fine. There might be a few key losses, but getting Vinnie Murphy from South Carolina at guard helps, Rusty Staats is an all-star center, and Quantavious Leslie is one of the best guards in Conference USA.

WKU Hilltoppers Preview 2022: Defense

You have to grade the WKU defense on a curve. Teams had to throw, keep throwing, and take a lot of chances to try keeping up the pace, but the secondary could’ve been better and the run defense was lacking.

Some of the mainstay stars – like pass rusher DeAngelo Malone and leading tackler Antwon Kincade – will be missed. There are enough parts back to at least maintain the production, but …

There are positives.  The secondary that helped load up on takeaways with 21 picks gets back AJ Brathwaite at safety coming off a 64-tackle season, and Kahlef Hallassie makes a whole lot of plays at corner. Coming in is Upton Stout from North Texas at one corner and Rome Weber is a veteran from Wyoming who’ll step in at safety.

There’s no instantly replacing Malone as a pass rusher up front, but Juwuan Jones is a veteran hybrid edge rusher at one end, DT Darius Shipp is one of the league’s better interior playmakers. There’s little size up front, but there’s enough experience up front to come up with a good rotation.

Will Ignont is a good-tackling linebacker on the inside, and Jaden Hunter is the leading returning tackler with 67 stops last season – he can play inside or out. Both can get behind the line.

Conference USA Preseason Predictions For Every Game: Preview 2022

Conference USA preseason predictions for every game, predicted order of finish, and lookahead to the 2022 season.

Just how much does it hurt Conference USA to lose Marshall, Old Dominion, and Southern Miss to the Sun Belt this season?

The league had to quickly scramble this offseason to change up its schedule, it’s having to do even more to keep the business going with Charlotte, FAU, North Texas, Rice, UAB and UTSA bolting in 2023 – Liberty, New Mexico State, Sam Houston and Jacksonville State will enter the fun – and all of that will likely be the main focus of the 2022 season.

And then UAB, UTSA and WKU should be the stars of the conference again.

Where’s the big surprise going to come from?

The problem is that too many schedules have too many tough non-conference games, but it should be entertaining as several teams will likely be fighting for bowl eligibility over the final few weeks.

Knowing there’s going to be a crazy outlier to screw this all up, here are the 2022 Conference USA preseason predictions.

WKU vs Austin Peay Game Preview

Why Austin Peay Will Win

The Governors know how to play pass defense.

The 2021 version was second in the FCS in picked off passes – coming up with 19 interceptions – for a D that dominated the turnover margin all season long.

WKU is going to throw and throw some more, but there’s a learning curve compared to last year’s team with most of the stars gone. Austin Peay should have the offense that can keep up the pace – even with a few key parts gone – and WKU’s pass rush will need some time to find the right rotation.

As long as the offense can win the turnover battle, though, the team should stay alive. However …

Week 0 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why WKU Will Win

Austin Peay needs to come up with new starters on offense who can shine. it loses its top two runners, QB Draylen Ellis is done, and three of the top four receivers have to be replaced. That’s a problem against what’s coming from the WKU attack.

Yeah, the Hilltoppers have to replace QB Bailey Zappe, WR Jerreth Sterns, and offensive coordinator Zach Kittley. Now it has to replace West Virginia transfer Jarret Doege – he shockingly entered the transfer portal – but West Florida transfer Austin Reed is ready to take over and get the O going.

The Austin Peay defense might be good again, but the good passing games last year were able to bomb away. As long as Reed gets time to work, he should be able to keep things moving. Limit the turnovers, take the midrange throws that are there, repeat.

Week 0 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Austin Peay isn’t going to be an easy pushover, but the defense will have an issue with WKU’s gashing runs while it’s paying attention to Reed and all that’s coming in the passing game.

The Hilltoppers will get off to a hot start, struggle for a bit, and then put it away with two crisp drives and some takeaways as the Governors try to press.

It’ll be a fun game to keep an eye on with lots of yards and scoring. WKU needs to gear up before going to Hawaii and Indiana.

It’s a new world for Conference USA with the loss of Marshall, Old Dominion, and Southern Miss over to the Sun Belt. There are still plenty of good teams still around, but the league is hanging on through the expansion process.

Can 2021’s star teams keep it all going? UTSA and WKU won’t be quite as good, UAB should be strong, and UTEP might just keep on stunning.

If Florida Atlantic can rise up after a down season, and if North Texas and Middle Tennessee can be bowl-worthy again, it should be a fun run.

The rankings are based on how good the teams should be and not the final projected records. Keeping in mind that this all could/might/will change when we make the final calls in August …

UTSA vs WKU Game Preview

Why UTSA Will Win

UTSA isn’t perfect, but the record is thanks to a formula that seems to be working just fine.

The defense leads Conference USA allowing fewer than 300 yards per game – and that’s with games against Memphis and Illinois in the mix – the offense keeps things moving on third downs, the special teams are among the best in the league, and there aren’t a slew of big mistakes to worry about.

Basically, the Roadrunners are playing like the veterans they are.

On the flip side, for all the flash, dash, and fun of the WKU offense, it’s not winning. There’s no running game, the defense can’t seem to get off the field, and the team is dead last in the nation in time of possession.

UTSA might have the ball for 40 minutes.

However …

Why WKU Will Win

To be extremely fair, while UTSA is putting back Lamar, Middle Tennessee, and UNLV, WKU was playing Army and Michigan State on the road and Indiana at home.

Can UTSA stop the pass? Short answer – not really.

Memphis and UNLV each rolled for well over 300 yards and Illinois was okay to push back late. The Roadrunners won all three games, but not it has to deal with the Hilltopper offensive machine.

Bailey Zappe continues to bomb away, averaging over 400 yards per game with three or more touchdown passes in every game. The UTSA pass rush shouldn’t matter too much in this with the offense designed to get the ball out of Zappe’s hands in a hurry, and …

What’s Going To Happen

UTSA will keep playing with fire in close game after close game, but this should be when WKU finally gets on the right side on one of those tight battles.

Zappe and the passing game will keep pressing after UTSA goes on tough scoring drive after tough scoring drive, and late in the fourth he’ll come up with the late touchdown to push ahead. The Roadrunners will get last shot, but they’ll come up just short.
