Wisconsin turns in a vintage performance in a 30-13 win over Purdue

Wisconsin turns in a classic Badger performance in 30-13 win over Purdue

Saturday afternoon’s win over Purdue followed the blueprint of many Wisconsin victories of the past. The Badger defense finally had turnover luck tip in their favor, Wisconsin’s run game took over the contest in the second half, and UW won the battle in the trenches. It was a refreshing sight to see for a Badger team that improved to 4-3 on the season and retained control over their fate in the Big Ten West.

The win began with a Badger drive that reminded us of what successful Wisconsin football looks like. Following the teams trading punts to start the game, the Badgers took the ball 92 yards on 13 plays on a touchdown drive that lasted over 7 minutes. It was nearly all Braelon Allen and Chez Mellusi, as Allen finished the drive off with a four-yard score to give the Badgers a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter.

After a Purdue fumble on the ensuing drive, Wisconsin’s offense gave the ball right back as the freshman Allen lost the football while trying to fight for extra yardage. The Boilermakers took advantage of starting the drive in Wisconsin’s territory, as Aidan O’Connell connected with Payne Durham for a 10-yard score to tie the game at 7.

Following a Wisconsin field goal drive and a Purdue punt, the Boilermakers got their best player involved. Star DL George Karlaftis scooped up a Graham Mertz fumble and took it to the house to give Purdue a 13-10 lead with just over six minutes remaining in the first half.

Wisconsin safety John Torchio then flipped the game on its head, as he intercepted O’Connell and took the ball all the way down to the Boilermaker one-yard line just before halftime. The Badgers failed to punch it in, and settled for a Collin Larsh field goal that tied things up at 13 headed to the break.

After yet another turnover forced by the Wisconsin defense on a forced fumble from Collin Wilder, the Badgers again failed to score off the takeaway to begin the second half.

The next Badger drive, however, was a magical one. Wisconsin went 94 yards in just three plays, as Allen exploded for a 70-yard run that set up Mellusi’s elusive 20-yard touchdown scamper. On the score, Wisconsin took a 20-13 lead halfway through the third quarter and would never give that lead up.

From there, Wisconsin’s defense added to their takeaway tally and an Allen touchdown run put the game away early in the fourth quarter. Allen and Mellusi combined for 289 yards and three touchdowns on the ground, while the Badger defense forced a season-high five turnovers.

Wisconsin improves to 4-3 on the season, and has a looming showdown that could decide the Big Ten West when Iowa visits Camp Randall next Saturday.

Why Wisconsin wins, why Wisconsin loses Saturday at Purdue

Why Wisconsin wins, why Wisconsin loses Saturday at Purdue

Wisconsin enters a pivotal stretch of the season with a 3-3 overall record and 1-2 record in Big Ten play. The team still control’s its own destiny along with two others in the division, so a lot is still undecided in the division race.

Iowa seems to be the lead dog with a 3-1 record, though the Hawkeyes are not one of the three teams that can win out and qualify for Indianapolis. They need Wisconsin to defeat Purdue on Saturday. If that happens, October 30’s matchup between Iowa and Wisconsin will go a long way towards deciding the division.

Purdue presents a tough matchup for the Badgers. That said, Wisconsin is favored to win its 15th straight contest against Purdue.

Here are the reasons why Wisconsin wins, or why Wisconsin loses on Saturday:

Five keys to a Wisconsin victory over Purdue on Saturday

Five keys to a Wisconsin victory over Purdue

Wisconsin prepares to travel to West Lafayette, Indiana on Saturday for a showdown with the 4-2 and No. 25-ranked Purdue Boilermakers.

Purdue is coming off a monumental 24-7 victory over then-No. 2 Iowa last weekend led by wide receiver David Bell and defensive end George Karlaftis.

The win brings the Boilermakers into a tie with Minnesota for the No. 2 spot in the Big Ten West. Saturday’s game will go a long way towards seeing who will compete with 3-1 Iowa for the top spot.

What will Wisconsin be up against on Saturday? Well, Purdue is a team that’s proven to find success due to an above-average passing game and stout defense. The Boilermaker rushing attack shouldn’t do anything against Wisconsin on Saturday because, well, it hasn’t done much all season.

But there are several overall areas where Purdue matches up well with Wisconsin, including the few outlined below.

So Wisconsin will need to outperform its season-to-date numbers in some of those areas in order to come away with a victory.

How will they do that? By executing this week’s five keys to victory:

Wisconsin vs Purdue Game Preview

Why Wisconsin Will Win

The defense continues to be incredible.

The entire Badger offense owes the other side a cookie for keeping the season alive, holding Illinois to 93 total yards two weeks ago and stuffing Army for 179 rushing yards last week in a way-too-tight 20-14 win.

For all of the team’s problems, it’s No. 2 in the nation in total defense behind Georgia, the team is fourth in the country in time of possession, and it’s third against the run.

Purdue doesn’t run, and even though it controls the clock, it’s not going to win the time of possession battle against this team. However …

Why Purdue Will Win

The Wisconsin defense has an Achilles heel. It’ll do everything right, but try three big pass plays, and two will work. That’s enough to get by considering how miserable the Badger offense is.

You don’t get to be as good as the Wisconsin D is without knowing how to take away the opposing main guy, but it’s going to have a problem with David Bell, who has four 100-yard receiving games in five outings and all but ruined the Iowa season last week with 11 catches for 240 yards and a score.

Even more than that, Purdue has a defense, too.

As Iowa found out, this is a different Purdue team. The offense is fine, but it’s the other side that takes over game – it hasn’t allowed 300 yards of total offense in the last three games.

However …

What’s Going To Happen

Turnovers.

Wisconsin’s offense is like clockwork in its ability to give the ball away, but Purdue’s defense – four takeaways against Iowa aside – doesn’t force turnovers.

The Badger offense can’t throw at all.

Graham Mertz has – let’s be kind here; he’s a college kid – struggled, and now he’ll have to deal with Purdue DE George Karlaftis jumping on his head for a full four quarters. But all Mertz has to do is not royally screw up.

Mertz will turn it over twice, the passing attack won’t go anywhere, and Bell and the Purdue air show will connect on two big home runs, and …

It’s all going to come down to defense and control of the clock.

Wisconsin does both of those things better.

Why Wisconsin Will Win

Can D’Metik Trice possibly keep it all going?

The senior guard went wacko late against Illinois hitting three after three after three on the way to 29 points as he almost brought the team back against a Big Ten power player. It wasn’t enough, but he was fantastic.

Wisconsin needed that pop.

Purdue might be playing well lately, but it hasn’t played a who’s who of Big Ten teams since losing to Michigan in late January. Wisconsin’t defense is still good against the mediocre teams, and the offense is hitting enough from three to keep pushing, but …

Why Purdue Will Win

Mr. Trice aside, the Badgers have gone brutally cold from the field and isn’t hitting from three. They only hit 40% or more from three once in their last 13 games, the’ve only hit 40% from the field once in the last five games, and worst of all, the defense has sort of stopped.

Iowa and Illinois were able to fire at will, and Michigan didn’t have any problems scoring when it had to.

No, Purdue hasn’t played a slew of killers, but it’s shooting incredibly well lately and the defense is doing what Wisconsin’s is supposed to.

The Boilermakers can stop the three, and the Badgers can’t.

What’s Going To Happen

Wisconsin just can’t pull up out of the nosedive – at least against the decent teams. However, again, Purdue has pulled off wins lately against the mediocre, and it’s not doing anything special against the great teams because there haven’t been any on the slate for a while.

Wisconsin, though, is currently one of those mediocre teams. Purdue’s defense will outplay the Badger D in a bit of a slugfest.

Breaking: Wisconsin’s game against Purdue on Saturday is canceled

According to a release from the program, the Wisconsin Badgers’ game on Saturday against the Purdue Boilermakers is canceled due to COVID-19 cases in the program.

This news comes after the Badgers’ game last weekend against the Nebraska Cornhuskers was canceled for the same reason.

Per the release, there are now 27 active COVID-19 cases in the program–15 athletes and 12 staff–and there was not enough of a positive trend to warrant the resumption of football activities in preparation for Saturday.

If you’re wondering, Paul Chryst’s team will now need to play all of the remaining five games on the schedule in order to qualify for the Big Ten Championship.

Here’s what Athletic Director Barry Alvarez had to say about the news:

“I share in the disappointment of our student-athletes and staff,” Alvarez said. “We have seen a level of improvement in our testing numbers, but not enough to give us confidence to resume normal activities and play our game on Saturday. We will continue to test regularly, take the proper health-related precautions and look forward to getting our team back on the field as soon as possible.”

The Badgers’ next game is now on November 14 against the Michigan Wolverines.

The 1-0 Wisconsin Badgers, at this point, are set to take the field again on Saturday against the 2-0 Purdue Boilermakers.

There are still many question marks surrounding whether the game will be played, and answers are supposed to be released tomorrow and Wednesday.

But as of right now the game is on, so we’re here to go over their series history against the first-place Boilermakers.

The series between the two schools began back in 1892 when Purdue defeated Wisconsin 32-4.

There have now been 87 total contests with Wisconsin boasting a 50-29-8 overall record.

Maybe the most significant note in the history between the two schools: the Badgers haven’t lost to the Boilermakers since 2003–winning 14 straight contests.

Going through the series here are some other things to note:

  • Wisconsin’s largest margin of victory: 62-17 back in 2011
  • Wisconsin’s longest win streak: 14 (2004-present)
  • Purdue’s largest margin of victory: 45-7 back in 1965
  • Purdue’s longest win streak: 3 (1932-1934)
  • The Badgers best the Boilermakers in every all-time accomplishment except…
    • National titles (both have zero)
    • Bowl record (Purdue’s .526 narrowly bests Wisconsin’s .516)
    • Weeks at AP No. 1 (Purdue has 5 and Wisconsin has 1)

The Wisconsin Badgers were not in action this weekend after their game against the Nebraska Cornhuskers was canceled due to rising COVID-19 positives within the Badger football program.

Although they didn’t play yesterday, Paul Chryst and his team stayed put at No. 11 in the newest Amway Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

Other Big Ten teams in the rankings are Ohio State at No. 3, Indiana at No. 13 and Michigan at No. 25.

As seen in these rankings and others around the college football world, the craziness and upsets from the first two weeks of the Big Ten season have seen the Badgers emerge as the clear No. 2 team in the conference behind the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Paul Chryst and his team will be back in action on Saturday against the Purdue Boilermakers, though that game is still in question with Wisconsin continuing to announce more positive COVID-19 tests.

When they do return to the field the team will look to continue their impressive start to the 2020 season and continue their rise in the national rankings.
