Badger football alumni react to Wisconsin’s 35-7 win over Northwestern

Badger football alums react to a massive win:

Saturday afternoon saw Wisconsin take care of their sixth game in as many tries as the Badgers steamrolled over Northwestern 35-7.

True freshman running back Braelon Allen ran over the Wildcats to the tune of 173 yards on the ground, as quarterback Graham Mertz put together a solid first half. The Wisconsin defense did what they have done nearly all season long as they stifled Northwestern and turned the Wildcats over early and often.

Wisconsin Badger alums both past and presently playing in the NFL loved the effort from the first-place Badgers, and took to Twitter to show their appreciation. Here is a look at notable Badger football alumni reacting to Wisconsin’s win:

Braleon Allen’s career day powers Wisconsin past Northwestern

Braelon Allen and the Badgers put away Northwestern early in a 35-7 route

Wisconsin opened their battle with Northwestern by sticking to their formula for the last few weeks. They gave freshman running back Braelon Allen and got out of the way.

The Badgers (7-3, 5-2 BIG) blitzed the Wildcats after a slow start to the tune of 35 unanswered points in a 35-7 route. After Northwestern marched down the field on 19 plays during a first-quarter drive that lasted 7:43, the Badgers snatched momentum back with a Caesar Williams interception in the end zone. Northwestern quarterback Andrew Marty made a crucial mistake, as he tried to force a pass in the red zone and it would signify things to come for the Wildcats.

After Wisconsin’s defense got their opening stop, Allen did the rest. On the ensuing drive, the freshman running back had 7 carries for 86 yards and finished it off with a 2-yard touchdown scamper to give Wisconsin a 7-0 lead early in the second quarter.

Five consecutive Northwestern punts would follow, as Wisconsin’s defense dominated a struggling Wildcats offense.

Graham Mertz dialed up a number of perfect throws over the middle of the field, completing his first 8 passes of the afternoon. A 13-yard strike to Danny Davis III gave the Badgers a 14-0 lead less than halfway through the second quarter.

Despite a red zone interception late in the first half, Mertz and the Badgers cruised to a 21-0 halftime lead.

Wisconsin’s defense would pick off Marty two more times in the second half, as the Badgers turned both into touchdowns. Northwestern’s only points came on a Julius Davis fumble that the Wildcats were able to scoop and score early in the fourth quarter.

The Badgers picked up their sixth-straight win, and sit firmly in the Big Ten West drivers seat on top of the standings. Up next, Nebraska travels to Camp Randall to face Wisconsin.

Senior guard D’Mitrik Trice has been climbing up Wisconsin basketball’s all-time leaderboards this year, now his fifth with the program.

Though he already sat at No. 4 on the program’s all-time assist list, Trice hit another milestone tonight against Northwestern as his assist on a Micah Potter 3-pointer became No. 400 in his illustrious career.

Trice now sits 32 assists short of No. 3 Ethan Happ, 64 short of No. 2 Jordan Taylor and 101 away from No. 1 Tracy Webster.

Furthermore, his 93 assists during the 2020-21 season are good for No. 4 in the Big Ten conference, that after finishing No. 6 in the category last season.

Trice has the option to return next season thanks to the NCAA granting fall and winter athletes an extra year of eligibility. Maybe with that extra year, Trice could climb to No. 1 on Wisconsin’s all-time assist list. Still, even if the senior doesn’t return, he has a chance to continue his ascension as the 2020-21 season comes to a close.

Why Northwestern Will Win

Wisconsin has fallen off the grid.

It has lost five of its last eight and two in a row with the offense struggling and the defense not anywhere near its normal self.

How bad are things? After being a sure thing to hit 40% or better from the field, the Badgers have failed to get there in any of its last three games. If you’re only scoring 62 at home against Iowa, there’s an issue.

Northwestern might have its own issues, but it doesn’t turn the ball over enough to give the struggling Badgers a slew of easy points. But …

Why Wisconsin Will Win

12 straight. That’s the losing streak Northwestern is on after starting 6-1, including a 68-52 loss to Wisconsin back in late January.

It’s not a shooting problem – the Wildcats are able to work the ball around well and get the right shots – but there isn’t enough happening from three and there aren’t nearly enough rebounds at either end.

The Badgers are more than happy to play a low-scoring battle with possessions at a premium. They’re not going to panic when the game is close, they’ll get the boards the Cats won’t, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Finally, the Badgers will look okay.

Northwestern will still be plucky, and Wisconsin will never feel comfortable, but the away side will win the rebounding margin by at least five and will make at least four more free throws.

The Wisconsin Badgers entered Evanston, Illinois yesterday with the chance to knock off the 4-0 Northwestern Wildcats and take control of the Big Ten West division.

If you’ve followed Badger football over the years you know Northwestern is always a tough place to play and makes for a perfect trap game scenario. Well, that was the case yesterday as Paul Chryst and his team fell 17-7.

There is a lot to take away from the game, including young players continuing to break out, an impressive performance on one side of the football, a key player practically losing the game for the Badgers and more.

Here are five main takeaways from the Badgers’ loss yesterday to Northwestern:

The No. 10 Wisconsin Badgers entered Evanston, Illinois today with Big Ten title and College Football Playoff aspirations after they sat idle for Weeks 2 and 3 of the season and watched the rest of the nation play football.

Well, things did not go as planned today for Paul Chryst’s team as they fell to the Northwestern Wildcats 17-7.

What decided the contest today were Badger mistakes on offense, awful quarterback play and dominant defense from both teams.

With today’s win, Northwestern moves to 5-0 on the season and takes a stranglehold of the Big Ten West division. Wisconsin, on the other hand, now sits at 2-1 on the season with a rivalry showdown against Minnesota coming next weekend.

Here are studs and duds from the Badgers’ disappointing loss:

They say Evanston, Illinois creates a trap game unlike any other venue in college football.

The Wisconsin Badgers know that more than anybody, and found out why yet again today as they fell to the Northwestern Wildcats 17-7.

What dictated the outcome can be described clearly: the Badgers could not get out of their own way all day and played right into the hands of a tough Northwestern team.

Heading into the contest, keys to a Badger victory included taking care of the football and establishing offensive ‘changeups’ to continue to make things easy for Mertz and the between-the-tackles rushing attack.

They did neither.

The keys also included the defense getting Northwestern off the field on third down and forcing Peyton Ramsey to win the game with his arm. The defense did that and more and had a remarkable showing.

But the offense, especially quarterback Graham Mertz, played right into Northwestern’s hands by turning the ball over seven times and shooting themselves in the foot with penalties and bad drops.

And a lot of that falls on the shoulders of the quarterback, a guy who turned the ball over four times himself, missed countless throws and played an overall abysmal game of football. It’s fair to say that if you take away his sloppy play and turnovers Wisconsin would’ve won this football game.

Mertz’s final stat line: 22/40 passing, 230 yards, 1 touchdown, 3 interceptions, 1 fumble. His potential is still high and his future at Wisconsin is still bright, but he was a large reason the Badgers only scored 7 points and lost the game.

Give credit to Wildcat Head Coach Pat Fitzgerald and the Northwestern defense as they did a lot to keep the Badgers out of rhythm all night, and also take note of the fact that top wide receivers Kendric Pryor and Danny Davis were out for the Badger offense.

But the story isn’t Northwestern winning the game. It is Graham Mertz, the rest of the Wisconsin offense and the team as a whole losing it by being unable to get out of their own way all day. It sounds obvious to say, but when you have 7 more penalties, 64 more penalty yards and five more turnovers than your opponent it’s hard to win a football game.

Wisconsin now falls to 2-1 on the season while Northwestern improves to 5-0 and takes a stranglehold of the Big Ten West.

It’s gameday in Evanston, Illinois as the No. 10 Wisconsin Badgers get set to battle the No. 19 Northwestern Wildcats in a game that will likely decide the Big Ten West division.

Last week when the Badgers ran over the Michigan Wolverines, it was one of the biggest games of the college football slate. Today, and I don’t think anybody expected this entering the season, the same story can be told as it is a matchup of unbeaten teams with a trip to the conference championship on the line.

When the Big Ten reinstated their football season back in September, one of the rules added was a 6-game minimum requirement for teams to be eligible for the conference championship game.

As you probably know, the No. 10 Wisconsin Badgers have already had two games canceled of the eight total games on their schedule. So, if one more game is unable to be played the team will not qualify for the Big Ten Championship.

College football in 2020 is all about flexibility and adapting to ever-changing circumstances. Put simply: if Wisconsin is 5-0 after the regular season the Big Ten needs to change the rule and allow them in the championship.

Former Ohio State Head Coach Urban Meyer agrees, and talked about it on FOX’s Big Noon Kickoff this morning:

First, Meyer doubled down from his comments this week and said “Wisconsin in the last 20 years is a top-10 program. Maybe not in wins, but you’re talking about consistency and identity.”

He then went on to say what I stated above and what many believe regarding the 6-game rule: it must be changed if an undefeated Wisconsin team is going to be held out of the Big Ten Championship.
